Nematic superconductivity in the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$

The superconducting behavior of the topological semimetal CaSn$_{3}$ was investigated by means of magnetotransport and muon spectroscopy $μ$SR measurements, both providing strong evidence of nematic behavior. Magnetotransport detects an anisotropic upper critical field, characterized by a twofold symmetry about $C_{4}$ axis, thus breaking the rotational symmetry of the underlying cubic lattice. Transverse-field $μ$SR data support such picture, with the muon depolarization rate depending strongly on the magnetic field direction, here applied along the [110] or [001] crystal directions. In the former case, the absence of any additional muon depolarization suggests an unconventional vortex lattice. In the latter case, a vortex lattice encompassing a sample volume of at least 52% indicates the bulk nature of CaSn$_{3}$ superconductivity. The resulting superfluid density in the (001) planes shows a gapped low-temperature behavior, with a superconducting gap value $Δ(0)\simeq 0.61(7)$ meV. Additional zero-field $μ$SR results indicate that the superconducting state is time-reversal-invariant. This fact and the breaking of rotational symmetry in a fully-gapped superconductor are consistent with an unconventional pairing state in a multi-dimensional representation, thus making CaSn$_{3}$ an important example of nematic superconductor.

Crystal field effects in the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$

The single ion properties of the zig-zag chain compound SrTm$_2$O$_4$ have been investigated using heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, inelastic neutron scattering, and polarized muon spectroscopy. Two crystal field models are employed to estimate the single ion properties; a Density Function Theory based model and an effective charge model based on the Hutchings point charge model. The latter describes our experimental results well. This model estimates an easy-axis anisotropy for one of the Tm$^{3+}$ sites and an easy-plane anisotropy for the second site. It also predicts a mixed ground state with dominating $J = 0$ characteristics for both sites. Additionally, muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectra reveal oscillations, typically a sign of long-range magnetic order. However, the temperature dependence of the precession frequency and the relaxation rates indicate that the system is in an extended critical regime and the observed relaxation is actually dynamic.

Magnetic order and disorder in a quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with randomized exchange

We present an investigation of the effect of randomizing exchange strengths in the $S=1/2$ square lattice quasi-two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet (QuinH)$_2$Cu(Cl$_{x}$Br$_{1-x}$)$_{4}\cdot$2H$_2$O (QuinH$=$Quinolinium, C$_9$H$_8$N$^+$), with $0\leq x \leq 1$. Pulsed-field magnetization measurements allow us to estimate an effective in-plane exchange strength $J$ in a regime where exchange fosters short-range order, while the temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ at which long range order (LRO) occurs is found using muon-spin relaxation, allowing us to construct a phase diagram for the series. We evaluate the effectiveness of disorder in suppressing $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ and the ordered moment size and find an extended disordered phase in the region $0.4 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.8$ where no magnetic order occurs, driven by quantum effects of the exchange randomness.

Pressure-Induced Antiferromagnetic Dome in the Heavy-Fermion $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$ System

In the heavy-fermion system $Yb_2Pd_2In_{1-x}Sn_x$, the interplay of crystal-field splitting, Kondo effect, and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interactions leads to complex chemical-, pressure-, and magnetic-field phase diagrams, still to be explored in full detail. By using a series of techniques, we show that even modest changes of parameters other than temperature are sufficient to induce multiple quantum-critical transitions in this highly susceptible heavy-fermion family. In particular, we show that, above $\sim 10$ kbar, hydrostatic pressure not only induces an antiferromagnetic phase at low temperature, but it likely leads to a reorientation of the Yb magnetic moments and/or the competition among different antiferromagnetic configurations.

Simultaneous Nodal Superconductivity and Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in the Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor CaPtAs

By employing a series of experimental techniques, we provide clear evidence that CaPtAs represents a rare example of a noncentrosymmetric superconductor which simultaneously exhibits nodes in the superconducting gap and broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) in its superconducting state (below $T_c$ $\approx$ 1.5 K). Unlike in fully-gapped superconductors, the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T)$ does not saturate at low temperatures, but instead it shows a $T^2$-dependence, characteristic of gap nodes. Both the superfluid density and the electronic specific heat are best described by a two-gap model comprising of a nodeless gap and a gap with nodes, rather than by single-band models. At the same time, zero-field muon-spin spectra exhibit increased relaxation rates below the onset of superconductivity, implying that TRS is broken in the superconducting state of CaPtAs, hence indicating its unconventional nature. Our observations suggest CaPtAs to be a new remarkable material which links two apparently disparate classes, that of TRS-breaking correlated magnetic superconductors with nodal gaps and the weakly-correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductors with broken TRS, normally exhibiting only a fully-gapped behavior.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking in the noncentrosymmetric Zr$_3$Ir superconductor

We report the discovery of Zr$_3$Ir as a new type of unconventional noncentrosymmetric superconductor (with $T_c = 2.3$ K), here investigated mostly via muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) techniques. Its superconductivity was characterized using magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and heat capacity measurements. The low-temperature superfluid density, determined via transverse-field $μ$SR and electronic specific heat, suggests a fully-gapped superconducting state. The spontaneous magnetic fields, revealed by zero-field $μ$SR below $T_c$, indicate the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in Zr$_3$Ir and, hence, the unconventional nature of its superconductivity. By using symmetry arguments and electronic-structure calculations we obtain a superconducting order parameter that is fully compatible with the experimental observations. Hence, our results clearly suggest that Zr$_3$Ir represents a new member of noncentrosymmetric superconductors with broken time-reversal symmetry.

Using uniaxial stress to probe the relationship between competing superconducting states in a cuprate with spin-stripe order

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

Coexistence of low moment magnetism and superconductivity in tetragonal FeS and suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ under pressure

We report local probe ($μ$SR) measurements on the recently discovered tetragonal FeS superconductor which has been predicted to be electronically very similar to superconducting FeSe. Most remarkably, we find that low moment ($10^{-2}-10^{-3}μ_\mathrm{B})$ disordered magnetism with a transition temperature of $T_\mathrm{N}\approx 20$ K microscopically coexists with bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{c}=4.3(1)$ K. From transverse field $μ$SR we obtain an in-plane penetration depth $λ_\mathrm{ab}(0)=223(2)$ nm for FeS. The temperature dependence of the corresponding superfluid density $λ_\mathrm{ab}^{-2}(T)$ indicates a fully gapped superconducting state and is consistent with a two gap s-wave model. Additionally, we find that the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}$ of FeS continuously decreases for hydrostatic pressures up to 2.2 GPa.

Control of the third dimension in copper-based square-lattice antiferromagnets

Using a mixed-ligand synthetic scheme, we create a family of quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnets, namely, [Cu(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]ClO$_4$ [pyz = pyrazine], [Cu$L_2$(pyz)$_2$](ClO$_4$)$_2$ [$L$ = pyO = pyridine-N-oxide and 4-phpyO = 4-phenylpyridine-N-oxide. These materials are shown to possess equivalent two-dimensional [Cu(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ nearly square layers, but exhibit interlayer spacings that vary from 6.5713~Å~to 16.777~Å, as dictated by the axial ligands. We present the structural and magnetic properties of this family as determined via x-ray diffraction, electron-spin resonance, pulsed- and quasistatic-field magnetometry and muon-spin rotation, and compare them to those of the prototypical two-dimensional magnetic polymer Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$. We find that, within the limits of the experimental error, the two-dimensional, {\it intralayer} exchange coupling in our family of materials remains largely unaffected by the axial ligand substitution, while the observed magnetic ordering temperature decreases slowly with increasing layer separation. Despite the structural motifs common to this family and Cu(pyz)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_2$, the latter has significantly stronger two-dimensional exchange interactions and hence a higher ordering temperature. We discuss these results, as well as the mechanisms that might drive the long-range order in these materials, in terms of departures from the ideal $S=1/2$ two-dimensional square-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In particular, we find that both spin exchange anisotropy in the intralayer interaction and interlayer couplings (exchange, dipolar, or both) are needed to account for the observed ordering temperatures, with the intralayer anisotropy becoming more important as the layers are pulled further apart.

Fully gapped superconductivity in the topological superconductor beta-PdBi2

The recent discovery of the topologically protected surface states in the beta-phase of PdBi2 has reignited the research interest in this class of superconductors. Here, we show results of our muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements carried out to investigate the superconducting and magnetic properties and the topological effect in the superconducting ground state of beta-PdBi2. Zero-field muSR data reveal that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity implying that the time reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of beta-PdBi2. Further, a strong diamagnetic shift of the applied field has been observed in the transverse-field (TF) muSR experiments, indicating that any triplet-pairing channel, if present, does not dominate the superconducting condensate. Using TF-muSR, we estimate that the magnetic penetration depth is 263(10) nm at zero temperature. Temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth provides evidence for the existence of a nodeless single s-wave type isotropic energy gap of 0.78(1) meV at zero temperature. Our results further suggest that the topologically protected surface states have no effect on the bulk of the superconductor.

Magnetic ordering in the ultra-pure site-diluted spin chain materials SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$

Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~\% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.

Spin dynamics of the ordered dipolar-octupolar pseudospin-$^1/_2$ pyrochlore Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ probed by muon spin relaxation

We present a muon spin relaxation study on the Ising pyrochlore Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ which develops an "all-in-all-out" magnetic order below 0.4~K. At 20~mK far below the ordering transition temperature, the zero-field muon spin relaxation spectra show no static features and can be well described by a dynamical Gaussian-broadened Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe function indicating strong fluctuations of the ordered state. The spectra of the paramagnetic state (below 4.2~K) reveal anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics and show only small difference with the spectra of the ordered state. We find that the fluctuation rate decreases with decreasing temperature and becomes nearly temperature independent below the transition temperature indicating persistent slow spin dynamics in the ground state. The field distribution width shows a small but sudden increase at the transition temperature and then becomes almost constant. The spectra in applied longitudinal fields are well fitted by the conventional dynamical Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe function, which further supports the dynamical nature of the ground state. The fluctuation rate shows a peak as a function of external field which is associated with a field-induced spin-flip transition. The strong dynamics in the ordered state are attributed to the transverse coupling of the Ising spins introduced by the multipole interactions.

Spin Liquid State in the 3D Frustrated Antiferromagnet PbCuTe2O6: NMR and muSR Studies

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although additional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.

Anomalously slow spin dynamics and short-range correlations in the quantum spin ice systems Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7

We report a positive muon spin relaxation and rotation (\muSR) study of the quantum spin ice materials Yb2Ti2O7 and Yb2Sn2O7 focusing on the low field response. In agreement with earlier reports, data recorded in small longitudinal fields evidence anomalously slow spin dynamics in the microsecond range below the temperature T_c at which the specific heat displays an intense peak, namely T_c = 0.24 K and 0.15 K, respectively, for the two systems. We found that slow dynamics extends above T_c up to at least 0.7 K for both compounds. The conventional dynamical Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe model describes the \muSR spectra recorded above T_c. At lower temperatures a published analytical extension of the Gaussian Kubo-Toyabe model provides a good description, consistent with the existence of short-range magnetic correlations. While the physical response of the two systems is qualitatively the same, Yb2Ti2O7 exhibits a much larger local magnetic susceptibility than Yb2Sn2O7 below T_c. Considering previously reported ac susceptibility, neutron scattering and \muSR results, we suggest the existence of anomalously slow spin dynamics to be a common physical property of pyrochlore magnetic materials. The possibility of molecular spin substructures to be associated to the slow dynamics and therefore the short-range correlations is mentioned. The slow spin dynamics observed under field does not exclude the presence of much faster dynamics detected in extremely low or zero field.

Evidence for unidimensional low-energy excitations as the origin of persistent spin dynamics in geometrically frustrated magnets

We report specific heat, magnetic, and muon spin relaxation measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the normal spinel CdHo2S4. The rare-earth ions sit on a lattice of corner-sharing regular tetrahedra as in pyrochlore compounds. Magnetic ordering is detected at Tc ~ 0.87 K. From spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements on both sides of Tc we uncover similar magnetic excitation modes driving the so-called persistent spin dynamics at T < Tc. Unidimensional excitations are argued to be at its origin. Often observed spin loop structures are suggested to support these excitations. The possibility of a generic mechanism for their existence is discussed.

Magnetic order, spin waves and fluctuations in the triangular antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7

We report magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments on the triangular antiferromagnet La2Ca2MnO7 which develops a genuine two-dimensional, three-sublattice \sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3} magnetic order below T_N = 2.8 K. From the susceptibility and specific heat data an estimate of the exchange interaction is derived. A value for the spin-wave gap is obtained from the latter data. The analysis of a previously reported inelastic neutron scattering study yields values for the exchange and spin-wave gap compatible with the results obtained from macroscopic measurements. An appreciable entropy is still missing at 10 K that may be ascribed to intense short-range correlations. The critical paramagnetic fluctuations extend far above T_N, and can be partly understood in terms of two-dimensional spin-wave excitations. While no spontaneous muSR field is observed below T_N, persistent spin dynamics is found. Short-range correlations are detected in this temperature range. Their relation to a possible molecular spin substructure and the observed exotic spin fluctuations is discussed.

Nd2Sn2O7: an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet with no divergence-free field and anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics

We report measurements performed on a polycrystalline sample of the pyrochlore compound Nd2Sn2O7. It undergoes a second order magnetic phase transition at Tc ~ 0.91 K to a noncoplanar all-in-all-out magnetic structure of the Nd3+ magnetic moments. The thermal behavior of the low temperature specific heat fingerprints excitations with linear dispersion in a three-dimensional lattice. The temperature independent spin-lattice relaxation rate measured below Tc and the anomalously slow paramagnetic spin dynamics detected up to ~ 30 Tc are suggested to be due to magnetic short-range correlations in unidimensional spin clusters, i.e., spin loops. The observation of a spontaneous field in muon spin relaxation measurements is associated with the absence of a divergence-free field for the ground state of an all-in-all-out pyrochlore magnet as predicted recently.

Nodeless superconductivity in quasi-one-dimensional Nb2PdS5: A muSR study

Muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements have been performed to study the superconducting and magnetic properties of Nb2PdS5. Zero-field muSR data show that no sizeable spontaneous magnetization arises with the onset of superconductivity in Nb2PdS5 which indicates that the time reversal symmetry is probably preserved in the superconducting state of this system. A strong diamagnetic shift is observed in the transverse-field muSR data practically ruling out a dominant triplet-pairing superconducting state in Nb2PdS5. The temperature dependence of magnetic penetration depth evidences the existence of a single s-wave energy gap with a gap value of 1.07(4) meV at zero temperature. The gap to Tc ratio, 2.02(9), indicates that Nb2PdS5 should be considered as a moderately strong-coupling superconductor. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature is 785(20) nm, indicating a very low superfluid density consistent with the quasi-one-dimensional nature of this system.

Quenched crystal field disorder and magnetic liquid ground states in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7

Solid-solutions of the "soft" quantum spin ice pyrochlore magnets Tb2B2O7 with B=Ti and Sn display a novel magnetic ground state in the presence of strong B-site disorder, characterized by a low susceptibility and strong spin fluctuations to temperatures below 0.1 K. These materials have been studied using ac-susceptibility and muSR techniques to very low temperatures, and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering techniques to 1.5 K. Remarkably, neutron spectroscopy of the Tb3+ crystal field levels appropriate to at high B-site mixing (0.5 < x < 1.5 in Tb2Sn2-xTixO7) reveal that the doublet ground and first excited states present as continua in energy, while transitions to singlet excited states at higher energies simply interpolate between those of the end members of the solid solution. The resulting ground state suggests an extreme version of a random-anisotropy magnet, with many local moments and anisotropies, depending on the precise local configuration of the six B sites neighboring each magnetic Tb3+ ion.

The magnetic ground state properties of non-centrosymmetric CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$

We present a study of the alloying series of the non-centrosymmetric $f$-electron intermetallic CePt$_3$B$_{1-x}$Si$_x$ by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements. In addition, we include a high pressure magnetization investigation of the stoichiometric parent compound CePt$_3$B. From our data we establish the nature of the magnetic ground state properties of the series, derive the ordered magnetic moment as function of stoichiometry and gain insight into the evolution of the symmetry of the ordered magnetic state with $x$. We thus can verify the notion that the behavior of the sample series can essentially be understood within the framework of the Doniach phase diagram. Further, our findings raise the issue of the role the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic interaction plays in correlated electron materials, and its effect on magnetic fluctuations in such materials.

Weak Interband-Coupling Superconductivity in the Filled Skutterudite LaPt4Ge12

The superconducting pairing state of LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is studied by measuring the magnetic penetration depth $λ(T,B)$ and the superfluid density $ρ_s(T)$ using a tunnel-diode-oscillator (TDO)-based method and by transverse field muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) spectroscopy. $λ(T)$ follows an exponential-type temperature dependence at $T\ll T_{c}$, but its zero-temperature value $λ(0)$ increases linearly with magnetic field. Detailed analyses demonstrate that both $λ(T)$ and the corresponding $ρ_{s}(T)$, measured in the Meissner state by the TDO method are well described by a two-gap $γ$ model with gap sizes of $Δ_1(0)=1.31k_{B}T_c$ and $Δ_2(0)=1.80k_{B}T_c$ and a very weak interband coupling. In contrast, $ρ_s(T)$, derived from the $μ\rm{SR}$ data taken in a small field, can be fitted by a single-gap BCS model with a gap close to $Δ_2(0)$. We conclude that LaPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12}$ is a marginal two-gap superconductor and the small gap $Δ_1$ seems to be destroyed by a small magnetic field. In comparison, in PrPt$_4$Ge$_{12}$ the $4f$-electrons may enhance the interband coupling and, therefore, give rise to more robust multiband superconductivity.

Effect of carrier concentration on magnetism and magnetic order in the pyrochlore iridates

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $μ$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

Inhomogeneous ordering in weakly coupled Heisenberg $S=1/2$ chains with random bonds

Long range magnetic ordering in the quasi-one-dimensional random-bond antiferromagnet BaCu$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_{x}$)$_2$O$_7$ is studied in $μ$SR experiments as a function of disorder strength. Compared to the disorder-free parent materials, the saturation ordered moment is found to be considerably reduced. Moreover, even in weakly disordered species, the magnetically ordered state is shown to be highly inhomogeneous. The results are interpreted in terms of weakly coupled random spin chains, governed by the ``infinite randomness`` fixed point.

Low temperature crystal structure and local magnetometry for the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7

We report synchrotron radiation diffraction and muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements on the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7. The powder diffraction study of a crushed crystal fragment does not reveal any structural change down to 4 K. The muSR measurements performed at 20 mK on a mosaic of single crystals with an external magnetic field applied along a three-fold axis are consistent with published a.c. magnetic-susceptibility measurements at 16 mK. While an inflection point could be present around an internal field intensity slightly above 0.3 T, the data barely support the presence of a magnetization plateau.

Low-temperature magnetic fluctuations in the Kondo insulator SmB6

We present the results of a systematic investigation of the magnetic properties of the three-dimensional Kondo topological insulator SmB6 using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation/rotation (muSR) measurements. The muSR measurements exhibit magnetic field fluctuations in SmB6 below 15 K due to electronic moments present in the system. However, no evidence for magnetic ordering is found down to 19 mK. The observed magnetism in SmB6 is homogeneous in nature throughout the full volume of the sample. Bulk magnetization measurements on the same sample show consistent behavior. The agreement between muSR, magnetization, and NMR results strongly indicate the appearance of intrinsic bulk magnetic in-gap states associated with fluctuating magnetic fields in SmB6 at low temperature.

Magnetic field distribution and characteristic fields of the vortex lattice for a clean superconducting niobium sample in an external field applied along a three-fold axis

The field distribution in the vortex lattice of a pure niobium single crystal with an external field applied along a three-fold axis has been investigated by the transverse-field muon-spin-rotation (TF-$μ$SR) technique over a wide range of temperatures and fields. The experimental data have been analyzed with the Delrieu's solution for the form factor supplemented by phenomenological formulas for the parameters. This has enabled us to experimentally establish the temperatures and fields for the Delrieu's, Ginzburg-Landau's, and Klein's regions of the vortex lattice. Using the numerical solution of the quasiclassical Eilenberger's equation the experimental results have been reasonably understood. They should apply to all clean BCS superconductors. The analytical Delrieu's model supplemented by phenomenological formulas for its parameters is found to be reliable for analyzing TF-$μ$SR experimental data for a substantial part of the mixed phase. The Abrikosov's limit is contained in it.

Magnetism of PdNi alloys near the critical concentration for ferromagnetism

We report results of a muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) study of dilute Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys, with emphasis on Ni concentrations $x =$ 0.0243 and 0.025. These are close to the critical value $x_\mathrm{cr}$ for the onset of ferromagnetic long-range order (LRO), which is a candidate for a quantum critical point. The 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni alloys exhibit similar $μ$SR properties. Both samples are fully magnetic, with average muon local fields $\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle =$ 2.0 and 3.8 mT and Curie temperatures $T_C =$ 1.0 and 2.03 K for 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni, respectively, at $T = 0$. The temperature dependence of $\langle B^\mathrm{loc}\rangle$ suggests ordering of Ni spin clusters rather than isolated spins. Just above $T_C$ a two-phase region is found with separate volume fractions of quasistatic short-range order (SRO) and paramagnetism. The SRO fraction decreases to zero with increasing temperature a few kelvin above $T_C$. This mixture of SRO and paramagnetism is consistent with the notion of an inhomogeneous alloy with Ni clustering. The measured values of $T_C$ extrapolate to $x_\mathrm{cr}$ = 0.0236 $\pm$ 0.0027. The dynamic muon spin relaxation in the vicinity of $T_C$ differs for the two samples: a relaxation-rate maximum at $T_C$ is observed for $x$ = 0.0243, reminiscent of critical slowing down, whereas for $x =$ 0.025 no dynamic relaxation is observed within the $μ$SR time window. The data suggest a mean-field-like transition in this alloy.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the vortex state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$: type-1.5 superconductivity, vortex clustering and a crossover from a triangular to a square vortex lattice

Muon-spin rotation has been used to probe vortex state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. At moderate fields and temperatures a lattice of triangular symmetry is observed, crossing over to a lattice of square symmetry with increasing field and temperature. At lower fields it is found that there are large regions of the sample that are completely free from vortices which grow in volume as the temperature falls. Importantly this is accompanied by {\it increasing} vortex density and increasing disorder within the vortex-cluster containing regions. Both effects are expected to result from the strongly temperature-dependent long-range vortex attractive forces arising from the multi-band chiral-order superconductivity.

Quantum spin chain as a potential realization of the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model

It is well established that long-range magnetic order is suppressed in magnetic systems whose interactions are low-dimensional. The prototypical example is the S-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (S-1/2 HAFC) whose ground state is quantum critical. In real S-1/2 HAFC compounds interchain coupling induces long-range magnetic order although with a suppressed ordered moment and reduced Néel temperature compared to the Curie-Weiss temperature. Recently, it was suggested that order can also be suppressed if the interchain interactions are frustrated, as for the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model. Here, we study the new S-1/2 HAFC, (NO)[Cu(NO3)3]. This material shows extreme suppression of order which furthermore is incommensurate revealing the presence of frustration consistent with the Nersesyan-Tsvelik model.

Controlling magnetic order and quantum disorder in one- and zero-dimensional molecule-based magnets

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of two molecule-based magnets synthesized from the same starting components. Their different structural motifs promote contrasting exchange pathways and consequently lead to markedly different magnetic ground states. Through examination of their structural and magnetic properties we show that [Cu(pyz)(H$_{2}$O)(gly)$_{2}$](ClO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ may be considered a quasi-one-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet while the related compound [Cu(pyz)(gly)](ClO$_{4}$), which is formed from dimers of antiferromagnetically interacting Cu$^{2+}$ spins, remains disordered down to at least 0.03 K in zero field, but shows a field-temperature phase diagram reminiscent of that seen in materials showing a Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons.

Analysis of the μSR data in the framework of the BCS-Gor'kov theory allowed us to determine microscopic parameters and the limitations of the theory. With decreasing temperature the field variation around the vortex cores deviates substantially from the predictions of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and adopts a pronounced conical shape. This is evidence of partial diffraction of Cooper pairs on the VL predicted by Delrieu for clean superconductors.

Evidence for Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Broken Superconductivity in Locally Noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs

We report the magnetic and superconducting properties of locally noncentrosymmetric SrPtAs obtained by muon-spin-rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. Zero-field muSR reveals the occurrence of small spontaneous static magnetic fields with the onset of superconductivity. This finding suggests that the superconducting state of SrPtAs breaks time-reversal symmetry. The superfluid density as determined by transverse field muSR is nearly flat approaching T = 0 K proving the absence of extended nodes in the gap function. By symmetry, several superconducting states supporting time-reversal symmetry breaking in SrPtAs are allowed. Out of these, a dominantly d + id (chiral d-wave) order parameter is most consistent with our experimental data.

Low field magnetic response of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor YPtBi

The low-field magnetic response of the non-centrosymmetric superconductor YPtBi ($T_c =0.77$ K) is investigated. Ac-susceptibility and dc-magnetization measurements provide solid evidence for bulk superconductivity with a volume fraction of $\sim 70\%$. The lower critical field is surprisingly small: $B_{c1} = 0.008$ mT $(T \rightarrow 0)$. Muon spin rotation experiments in a transverse magnetic field of 0.01 T show a weak increase of the Gaussian damping rate $σ_{TF}$ below $T_c$, which yields a London penetration depth $λ= 1.6 \pm 0.2~ μ$m. The zero-field Kubo-Toyabe relaxation rate $σ_{KT}$ equals $0.129 \pm 0.004~μ$s$^{-1}$ and does not show a significant change below $T_c$. This puts an upper bound of 0.04 mT on the spontaneous magnetic field associated with a possible odd-parity component in the superconducting order parameter.

Low superfluid density and possible multi-gap superconductivity in BiS2-based layered superconductor Bi4O4S3

The magnetic penetration depth as a function of temperature in Bi4O4S3 was studied by muon-spin-spectroscopy measurements. The superfluid density of Bi4O4S3 is found to be very low. The dependence of penetration depth on temperature possibly suggests the existence of two s-wave type energy gaps with the zero-temperature values of 0.93(3) and 0.09(4) meV. The upturn in the temperature dependence of the upper critical field close to Tc further supports multi-gap superconductivity in Bi4O4S3. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies. However, a single-gap s-wave model fit with a gap of 0.88(2) meV can not be ruled out completely. The value of penetration depth at T = 0 K is estimated to be of 861(17) nm, one of the largest of all known layered superconductors, reflecting a very low superfluid density.

s-wave pairing in the optimally-doped LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor

We report on the magnetic and superconducting properties of LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 by means of zero- (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin spectroscopy measurements (uSR). Contrary to previous results on iron-based superconductors, measurements in zero field demonstrate the absence of magnetically ordered phases. TF-uSR data give access to the superfluid density, which shows a marked 2D character with a dominant s-wave temperature behavior. The field dependence of the magnetic penetration depth confirms this finding and further suggests the presence of an anisotropic superconducting gap.

Superconducting parameters of BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 filled skutterudite

We report on a study of the superconducting properties for a series of polycrystalline BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 filled skutterudite compounds for x = 0, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Muon spin rotation (muSR) spectroscopy as well as magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements were performed. The magnetic penetration depth λ, the coherence length ξ, and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κare evaluated. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described by an s-wave superconducting gap and this classical scenario is supported by the field-independent λ. The gap-to-Tc ratio Δ/kTc increases with the Au content from 1.70 for x = 0 to 2.1(1) for x = 1. By combining muSR, magnetization, and specific heat data, we find that BaPt(4-x)Au(x)Ge12 compounds are in between the dirty and clean limits with mean free paths of the carriers l ~ ξ. Interestingly, resistivity data for BaPt4Ge12 indicate a much higher upper critical field, which is probably due to defects or impurities close to the surface of the crystallites.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point: Unusual short-range ordered state in CeFePO

Cerium 4f electronic spin dynamics in single crystals of the heavy-fermion system CeFePO is studied by means of ac-susceptibility, specific heat and muon-spin relaxation ($μ$SR). Short-range static magnetism occurs below the freezing temperature Tg ~ 0.7 K, which prevents the system from accessing the putative ferromagnetic quantum critical point. In the $μ$SR, the sample-averaged muon asymmetry function is dominated by strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations below 10 K and exhibits a characteristic time-field scaling relation expected from glassy spin dynamics, strongly evidencing cooperative and critical spin fluctuations. The overall behavior can be ascribed neither to canonical spin glasses nor other disorder-driven mechanisms.

Evidence for an exotic magnetic transition in the triangular spin system FeGa2S4

We report positive muon spin relaxation measurements on the triangular lattice magnetic system FeGa2S4. A magnetic transition not previously detected by specific heat and magnetic susceptibility measurements is found in zero field at T^* \simeq 30 K. It is observed through the temperature dependencies of the signal amplitude and the spin-lattice relaxation rate. This transition is therefore not a conventional magnetic phase transition. Since persistent spin dynamics is observed down to 0.1 K, the ground state cannot be of the canonical spin-glass type, which could be suggested from hysteresis effects in the bulk susceptibility below T_f \simeq 16 K. These results are compared to those found for the isomorph NiGa2S4. It is argued that the fate of the transition, which has been interpreted in terms of the Z_2 topological transition in this latter system, is probably different in FeGa2S4.

Evolution of spin relaxation processes in LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$F$_4$ with increasing x studied via AC-susceptibility and muon spin relaxation

We present measurements of magnetic field and frequency dependences of the low temperature (T = 1.8 K) AC-susceptibility, and temperature and field dependences of the longitudinal field positive muon spin relaxation (μSR) for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$F$_4$ with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0408, and 0.0855. The fits of numerical simulations to the susceptibility data for the x = 0.0017, 0.0085 and 0.0408 show that Ho-Ho cross-relaxation processes become more important at higher concentrations, signaling the crossover from single-ion to correlated behavior. We simulate the muon spin depolarization using the parameters extracted from the susceptibility, and the simulations agree well with our data for samples with x = 0.0017 and 0.0085. The μSR data for samples with x = 0.0408 and 0.0855 at low temperatures (T < 10 K) cannot be described within a single-ion picture of magnetic field fluctuations and give evidence for additional mechanisms of depolarization due to Ho$^{3+}$ correlations. We also observe an unusual peak in the magnetic field dependence of the muon relaxation rate in the temperature interval 10 - 20 K that we ascribe to a modification of the Ho$^{3+}$ fluctuation rate due to a field induced shift of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited doublet crystal field states relative to a peak in the phonon density of states centered near 63 cm$^{-1}$.

Magnetic order and spin dynamics in the proximity of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point: A μSR study of YbNi4P2

The local 4f-electronic spin dynamics and magnetic order in YbNi4P2 were studied by means of muon-spin relaxation measurements. Zero-field muon-spin relaxation proves static magnetic order with a strongly reduced ordered Yb3+ moment of (2.5-4.6) \times 10-2μB, below TC = 140 mK. Above TC, the muon-spin polarization P(t,B) is dominated by quasihomogeneous spin fluctuations and exhibits a time-field scaling relation P(t,B) = P(t/Bγ), indicating cooperative critical spin dynamics in the system. At T = 190 mK, slightly above TC, γ = 0.81(5), suggesting time-scale invariant power-law behavior for the dynamic electronic spin-spin autocorrelation function.

Magnetic order, magnetic correlations and spin dynamics in the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Er2Ti2O7

Er2Ti2O7 is believed to be a realization of an XY antiferromagnet on a frustrated lattice of corner-sharing regular tetrahedra. It is presented as an example of the order-by-disorder mechanism in which fluctuations lift the degeneracy of the ground state, leading to an ordered state. Here we report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic properties of Er2Ti2O7, which displays a second-order phase transition at T_N \simeq 1.2 K with coexisting short- and long-range orders. Magnetic-susceptibility studies show that there is no spin-glass-like irreversible effect. Heat-capacity measurements reveal that the paramagnetic critical exponent is typical of a 3-dimensional XY magnet while the low-temperature specific heat sets an upper limit on the possible spin-gap value and provides an estimate for the spin-wave velocity. Muon spin relaxation measurements show the presence of spin dynamics in the nanosecond time scale down to 21 mK. This time range is intermediate between the shorter time characterizing the spin dynamics in Tb2Sn2O7, which also displays long- and short-range magnetic order, and the time scale typical of conventional magnets. Hence the ground state is characterized by exotic spin dynamics. We determine the parameters of a symmetry-dictated Hamiltonian restricted to the spins in a tetrahedron, by fitting the paramagnetic diffuse neutron scattering intensity for two reciprocal lattice planes. These data are recorded in a temperature region where the assumption that the correlations are limited to nearest neighbors is fair.

Odd-frequency pairing in (TMTSF)2ClO4

The low field phase of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4 is studied by muon spin rotation. The zero temperature limit of the magnetic penetration depth within the TMTSF layers is obtained to be lambda_{ab}(0) = 0.86(2) um. Temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation shows no indication of gap nodes on the Fermi surface nor of any spontaneous fields due to time-reversal-symmetry breaking. The weight of evidence suggests that the symmetry of this low field phase is odd-frequency p-wave singlet; a novel example of odd-frequency pairing in a bulk superconductor.

Quantum Tunneling in Half-Integer-Spin Kagome-Lattice Langasites

Employing the muon spin relaxation technique we evidence temperature independent magnetic fluctuations persisting down to the lowest temperatures in the samarium-based ($J=5/2$) kagome-lattice Langasite. A detailed bulk-magnetization characterization and comparison to the neodymium-based ($J=9/2$) compound allow us to assign the persistent spin dynamics to a quantum tunneling process. This is facilitated by pairwise anisotropic magnetic interactions, leading to a universal scaling of the muon relaxation. Our study reveals a remarkable analogy between weakly interacting half-integer-spin rare-earth magnets and molecular nanomagnets.

Singlet Ground State of the Quantum Antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9

We present local probe results on the honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9. Muon spin relaxation measurements in zero field down to 20 mK show unequivocally that there is a total absence of spin freezing in the ground state. Sb NMR measurements allow us to track the intrinsic susceptibility of the lattice, which shows a maximum at around 55 K and drops to zero in the low-temperature limit. The spin-lattice relaxation rate shows two characteristic energy scales, including a field-dependent crossover to exponential low-temperature behavior, implying gapped magnetic excitations.

Strong pressure dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in single crystals of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 studied by muon spin rotation

In the tetragonal heavy fermion system CeCoIn5 the unconventional superconducting state is probed by means of muon spin rotation. The pressure dependence (0-1 GPa) of the basal-plane magnetic penetration depth (λ_a), the penetration depth anisotropy (γ=λ_c/λ_a) and the temperature dependence of 1/λ_i^2 (i=a,c) were studied in single crystals. A strong decrease of λ_a with pressure was observed, while γand λ_i^2(0)/λ_i^2(T) are pressure independent. A linear relationship between 1/λ_a^2(270 mK) and Tc was also found. The large decrease of λ_a with pressure is the signature of an increase of the number of superconducting quasiparticles by a factor of about 2.

Competing Interactions and Magnetic Frustration in Yb4LiGe4

We have studied polycrystalline Yb4LiGe4, a ternary variant of the R5T4 family of layered compounds characterized by a very strong coupling between the magnetic and crystallographic degrees of freedom. The system is mixed valent, with non-magnetic Yb2+ and magnetic Yb3+ present, and is characterized by coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. We present measurements of resistivity, AC-susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation (muSR), below 1 K. The low temperature measurements suggest a transition to a mesoscopically inhomogeneous magnetically ordered state below 2 K characterized by fluctuations well below the ordering temperature. This unusual state is believed to result from the enhanced two-dimensionality produced by Li substitution and frustration effects inherent in the Yb sub-lattice geometry.

Muon spin rotation study of the intercalated graphite superconductor CaC6 at low temperatures

Muon spin rotation (muSR) experiments were performed on the intercalated graphite CaC6 in the normal and superconducting state down to 20 mK. In addition, AC magnetization measurements were carried out resulting in an anisotropic upper critical field Hc2, from which the coherence lengths xi_ab(0)=36.3(1.5) nm and xi_c(0)=4.3(7) nm were estimated. The anisotropy parameter gamma_H= H_c2_ab/H_c2_c increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. A single isotropic s-wave description of superconductivity cannot account for this behaviour. From magnetic field dependent muSR experiments the absolute value of the in-plane magnetic penetretion depth lambda_ab=78(3) nm was determined. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density rho_s(T) is slightly better described by a two-gap than a single-gap model.

Partial magnetization plateau emerging from a quantum spin ice state in Tb2Ti2O7

The quantum spin ice model applied to Tb2Ti2O7 predicts that magnetic fields applied along the [111] axis will induce a partial magnetization plateau [H. R. Molavian and M. J. P. Gingras, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 21, 172201 (2009)]. We test this hypothesis using ac magnetic susceptibility and muon-spin relaxation measurements, finding features at 15 and 65 mT agreeing with the predicted boundaries of the magnetization plateau. This suggests that Tb2Ti2O7 is well described by a quantum spin ice model with an effective exchange constant of Jeff = 0.17(1) K.

μSR Study of Spin Dynamics in LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$

We present zero-field μSR measurements for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$ samples with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0406, and 0.0855. We characterize the dynamics associated with the formation of the (F-μ-F)$^{-1}$ complex by comparing our data to Monte Carlo simulations to determine the concentration range over which the spin dynamics are determined primarily by the Ho$^{3+}$-μ interaction rather than the F-μ interaction. Simulations show that F-μ-F oscillations should evolve into a Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe decay for an increasing static magnetic field distribution Γ (i.e., increasing x), but the data do not show this behavior, consistent with the recently reported existence of strong magnetic fluctuations in this system at low temperatures. Anisotropy in the field distribution is shown to cause small errors of order 10% from behavior predicted for an isotropic distribution. Finally, numerical calculations show that values of Γ calculated in the single ion limit greatly exceed the values extracted from curve fits, suggesting that strong correlations play an important role in this system.

Design, development and verification of the 30 and 44 GHz front-end modules for the Planck Low Frequency Instrument

We give a description of the design, construction and testing of the 30 and 44 GHz Front End Modules (FEMs) for the Low Frequency Instrument (LFI) of the Planck mission to be launched in 2009. The scientific requirements of the mission determine the performance parameters to be met by the FEMs, including their linear polarization characteristics. The FEM design is that of a differential pseudo-correlation radiometer in which the signal from the sky is compared with a 4-K blackbody load. The Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) at the heart of the FEM is based on indium phosphide High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMTs). The radiometer incorporates a novel phase-switch design which gives excellent amplitude and phase match across the band. The noise temperature requirements are met within the measurement errors at the two frequencies. For the most sensitive LNAs, the noise temperature at the band centre is 3 and 5 times the quantum limit at 30 and 44 GHz respectively. For some of the FEMs, the noise temperature is still falling as the ambient temperature is reduced to 20 K. Stability tests of the FEMs, including a measurement of the 1/f knee frequency, also meet mission requirements. The 30 and 44 GHz FEMs have met or bettered the mission requirements in all critical aspects. The most sensitive LNAs have reached new limits of noise temperature for HEMTs at their band centres. The FEMs have well-defined linear polarization characteristcs.

Microscopic Study of the Superconducting State of the Iron Pnictide RbFe_2As_2

A study of the temperature and field dependence of the penetration depth λof the superconductor RbFe_2As_2 (T_c=2.52 K) was carried out by means of muon-spin rotation measurements. In addition to the zero temperature value of the penetration depth λ(0)=267(5) nm, a determination of the upper critical field B_c2(0)=2.6(2) T was obtained. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier concentration is discussed within the framework of a multi-gap scenario. Compared to the other "122" systems which exhibit much higher Fermi level, a strong reduction of the large gap BCS ratio 2Δ/k_B T_c is observed. This is interpreted as a consequence of the absence of interband processes. Indications of possible pair-breaking effect are also discussed.

Comment on ``Muon-spin rotation studies of the superconducting properties of Mo_3Sb_7'', Phys.Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)

In a recent article Tran et al. [Phys. Rev.B 78, 172505 (2008)] report on the result of the muon-spin rotation (\muSR) measurements of Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor. Based on the analysis of the temperature and the magnetic field dependence of the Gaussian relaxation rate σ_{sc} they suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is the superconductor with two isotropic s-wave like gaps. An additional confirmation was obtained from the specific heat data published earlier by partly the same group of authors in [Acta Mater. 56, 5694 (2008)]. The purpose of this Comment is to point out that from the analysis made by Tran et al. the presence of two superconducting energy gaps in Mo_3Sb_7 can not be justified. The analysis of \muSR data does not account for the reduction of σ_{sc} with increasing temperature, and, hence, yields inaccurate information on the magnetic penetration depth. The specific heat data can be satisfactory described within the framework of the one-gap model with the small residual specific heat component. The experimental data of Tran et al., as well as our earlier published \muSR data [Phys. Rev. B 78, 014502 (2008)] all seem to be consistent with is the presence of single isotropic superconducting energy gap in Mo_3Sb_7.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation in the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe

We report zero-field muon spin rotation and relaxation measurements on the superconducting ferromagnet UCoGe. Weak itinerant ferromagnetic order is detected by a spontaneous muon spin precession frequency below the Curie temperature $T_C = 3$ K. The $μ^+$ precession frequency persists below the bulk superconducting transition temperature $T_{sc} = 0.5$ K, where it measures a local magnetic field $B_{loc} = 0.015$ T. The amplitude of the $μ$SR signal provides unambiguous proof for ferromagnetism present in the whole sample volume. We conclude ferromagnetism coexists with superconductivity on the microscopic scale.

Muon-spin rotation measurements of the penetration depth of the Mo_3Sb_7 superconductor

Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth λin superconductor Mo_3Sb_7 (T_c~2.1 K) were carried out by means of muon-spin-rotation. The absolute values of λ, the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ, the first H_{c1} and the second H_{c2} critical fields at T=0 are λ(0)=720(100)nm, κ(0)=55(9), μ_0H_{c1}(0)=1.8(3)mT, and μ_0H_{c2}(0)=1.9(2)T. The zero temperature value of the superconducting energy gap Δ(0) was found to be 0.35(1)meV corresponding to the ratio 2Δ(0)/k_BT_c=3.83(10). At low temperatures λ^{-2}(T) saturates and becomes constant below T~0.3T_c, in agreement with what is expected for s-wave BCS superconductors. Our results suggest that Mo_3Sb_7 is a BCS superconductor with the isotropic energy gap

Superfluid Density and Energy Gap-Function of Superconducting PrPt4Ge12

The filled skutterudite superconductor PrPt4Ge12 was studied in muon-spin rotation (muSR), specific heat, and electrical resistivity experiments. The continuous increase of the superfluid density with decreasing temperature and the dependence of the magnetic penetration depth λon the magnetic field obtained by means of muSR, as well as the observation of a T^3 dependence of the electronic specific heat establish the presence of point-like nodes in the superconducting energy gap. The energy gap was found to be well described by Δ=Δ_0| k_x - ik_y| or Δ= Δ_0(1 - k_y^4) functional forms, similar to that obtained for another skutterudite superconductor, PrOs4Sb12. The gap to T_c ratios were estimated to be Δ_0/k_BT_c = 2.68(5) and 2.29(5), respectively.

What relaxes muon spins in molecular nanomagnets?

We address the cause of the unusual muon spin relaxation (muSR) results on molecular nanomagnets (MNMs). Through measurements on protonated and deuterated samples of the MNMs Cr7Mn (S=1) and Cr8 (S=0), we show that the muon spin for $S \neq 0$ MNMs is relaxed via dynamic fluctuations of the electronic spins. A freezing out of dynamic processes occurs on cooling and at low temperatures the muon spins are relaxed by the electronic spins which themselves are dephased by incoherent nuclear field fluctuations. We observe a transition to a state of static magnetic order of the MNM electronic spins in Cr7Mn below 2 K.

Magnetic field induced non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid crossover at the quantum critical point of YbCu$_{5-x}$Au$_{x}$

The temperature (T) dependence of the muon and $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ in YbCu4.4Au0.6 is reported over nearly four decades. It is shown that for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ diverges following the behaviour predicted by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory developed by Moriya for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. On the other hand, the static uniform susceptibility $χ_s$ is observed to diverge as $T^{-2/3}$ and $1/T_1T\propto χ_s^2$, a behaviour which is not accounted for by SCR theory. The application of a magnetic field $H$ is observed to induce a crossover to a Fermi liquid behaviour and for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ is found to obey the scaling law $1/T_1(H)= 1/T_1(0)[1+(μ_BH/k_BT)^2]^{-1}$.

Muon spin rotation studies of spin dynamics at avoided level crossings in LiY0.998Ho0.002F4

We have studied the Ho3+ spin dynamics for LiY0.998Ho0.002F4 through the positive muon (mu+) transverse field depolarization rate lambda_TF as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find sharp reductions in lambda_TF(H) at fields of 23, 46 and 69 mT, for which the Ho3+ ion system has field-induced (avoided) level crossings. The reduction scales with calculated level repulsions, suggesting that mu+ depolarization by slow fluctuations of non-resonant Ho3+ spin states is partially suppressed when resonant tunneling opens new fluctuation channels at frequencies much greater than the muon precession frequency.

Onset of antiferromagnetism in UPt_{3} via Th-substitution studied by muon spin spectroscopy

Muon spin spectroscopy has been used to study in detail the onset of large-moment antiferromagnetism (LMAF) in UPt_{3} as induced by Th substitution. Zero-field experiments have been carried out on a series of polycrystalline U_{1-x}Th_{x}Pt_{3} (0 <= x <= 0.05) samples in the temperature range 0.04 - 10 K. At low Th content (x <= 0.002) magnetic ordering on the time scale of the uSR experiment (10^{-8} s) is not detected. For x = 0.005 a weak magnetic signal appears below T = 2 K, while for 0.006 <= x <= 0.05, spontaneous oscillations in the uSR spectra signal the presence of the LMAF phase. The data are well described by a two-component depolarization function, combining the contribution of a polycrystalline antiferromagnet and a Kubo-Lorentzian response. However, the transition into the antiferromagnetic phase is quite broad. For x = 0.01 and 0.02, a weak magnetic signal appears below about 7 K, which is well above the mean-field transition temperatures. The broadening may be a result of the effects of disorder on the time fluctuations associated with anomalous small-moment antiferromagnetism.

First Order Transition in the Spin Dynamics of Geometrically Frustrated Yb2Ti2O7

Using neutron diffraction, 170Yb Mossbauer and muSR spectroscopies, we have examined the pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 where the Yb3+ S'=1/2 ground state has planar anisotropy. Below ~0.24K, the temperature of the known specific heat lambda transition, there is no long range magnetic order. We show that the transition corresponds to a first order change in the fluctuation rate of the Yb3+ spins. Above the transition temperature, the rate, in the GHz range, follows a thermal excitation law, whereas below, the rate, in the MHz range, is essentially temperature independent indicative of a quantum fluctuation regime.
