In-plane and out-of-plane optical response of the nodal-line semimetals ZrGeS and ZrGeSe

Polarization-dependent reflectivity measurements were carried out over a broad frequency range on single-crystalline ZrGeSe and ZrGeS compounds, which are closely related to the prototype nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. These measurements revealed the strongly anisotropic character of both ZrGeSe and ZrGeS, with a reduced plasma frequency for the out-of-plane direction {\bf E}$\| c$ as compared to the in-plane direction {\bf E}$\| ab$. For {\bf E}$\| ab$ the optical conductivity spectrum consists of two Drude terms followed by a shoulder or plateau-like behavior and a distinct U shape at higher energies, while for {\bf E}$\| c$ one Drude term is followed by a peak-like behavior and the U shape of the profile is less developed. Under external pressure, two prominent excitations appear in the out-of-plane optical conductivity spectrum of ZrGeSe, whose frequency position and oscillator strength show a weak anomaly at $\sim$3~GPa. Overall, the pressure-induced changes in the profile of the {\bf E}$\| c$ conductivity spectrum are much enhanced above $\sim$3~GPa. We compare our results to those recently reported for ZrSiS in a quantitative manner.

Infrared study of the layered, magnetic insulator Mn(Bi$_{0.07}$Sb$_{0.93}$)$_2$Te$_4$ at low temperatures

Topological insulators with intrinsic magnetic ordering, potentially hosting rare quantum effects, recently attracted extensive attention. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is the first established example. The Sb-doped variant Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ shows a great variety of electronic properties depending on the Sb content~$x$, such as shifts in the Fermi level and the Neel temperature $T_{\mathrm N}$, and the change of the free charge carrier type from $n$- to $p$-type at high Sb substitution ratios. Here, we investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on the bulk electronic structure of Mn(Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_4$ with high Sb content $x=0.93$ by temperature-dependent reflectivity measurements over a broad frequency range. We observe anomalies in the optical response across $T_{\mathrm N}$ when the antiferromagnetic order sets, which suggests a coupling between the magnetic ordering and the electronic structure of the material.

Lattice dynamics and electronic excitations in a large family of lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice structure

Reproducing the electronic structure of AM$_4$X$_8$ lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice is a great theoretical challenge due to the interplay of various factors. The character of the M$_4$X$_4$ cluster orbitals is critically influenced by the Jahn-Teller instability, the spin-orbit interaction, and also by the magnetic state of the clusters. Consequently, to reproduce the narrow-gap semiconducting nature of these moderately correlated materials requires advanced approaches, since the strength of the inter-cluster hopping is strongly affected by the character of the cluster orbitals. In order to provide a solid experimental basis for theoretical studies, we performed broadband optical spectroscopy on a large set of lacunar spinels, with systematically changing ions at the A and M sites as well as the ligand (A=Ga, Ge, Al; M=V, Mo, Nb, Ta; X=S, Se). Our study covers the range of phonon excitations and also electronic transitions near the gap edge. In the phonon excitation spectrum a limited subset of the symmetry allowed modes is observed in the cubic state, with a few additional modes emerging upon the symmetry-lowering structural transition. All the infrared active modes are assigned to vibrations of the ligands and ions at the A sites, with no obvious contribution from the M-site ions. Concerning the electronic states, we found that all compounds are narrow-gap semiconductors ($E_\mathrm{g} = 130 - 350\,$meV) already in their room-temperature cubic state and their structural transitions induce weak, if any, changes in the band gap. The gap value is decreased when substituting S with Se and also when replacing $3d$ ions by $4d$ or $5d$ ions at the M sites.

Optical Study of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under pressure: Coexistence of spin-density-wave gap and superconductivity

Temperature-dependent reflectivity measurements in the frequency range 85 - 7000 cm$^{-1}$ were performed on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals under pressure up to $\sim$5 GPa. The corresponding pressure- and temperature-dependent optical conductivity was analyzed with the Drude-Lorentz model to extract the coherent and incoherent contributions. The gradual suppression of the spin-density wave (SDW) state with increasing pressure and the appearance of the superconducting phase coexisting with the SDW phase at 3.6~GPa were observed. At 3.6~GPa, the reflectivity reaches unity below $\sim$95~cm$^{-1}$ indicating the opening of the superconducting gap and shows a full gap tendency at 6 K.

Magnetoelasticity in ACr2O4 spinel oxides

Dynamical properties of the lattice structure was studied by optical spectroscopy in ACr2O4 chromium spinel oxide magnetic semiconductors over a broad temperature region of T=10-335K. The systematic change of the A-site ions (A=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) showed that the occupancy of 3d orbitals on the A-site, has strong impact on the lattice dynamics. For compounds with orbital degeneracy (FeCr2O4, NiCr2O4 and CuCr2O4), clear splitting of infrared-active phonon modes and/or activation of silent vibrational modes have been observed upon the Jahn-Teller transition and at the onset of the subsequent long-range magnetic order. Although MnCr2O4 and CoCr2O4 show multiferroic and magnetoelectric character, no considerable magnetoelasticity was found in spinel compounds without orbital degeneracy as they closely preserve the high-temperature cubic spinel structure even in their magnetic ground state. Besides lattice vibrations, intra-atomic 3d-3d transitions of the A$^{2+}$ ions were also investigated to determine the crystal field and Racah parameters and the strength of the spin-orbit coupling.

Pressure-induced transition from the dynamic to static Jahn-Teller effect in (Ph$_{4}$P)$_{2}$IC$_{60}$

High-pressure infrared transmission measurements on \PhC60 were performed up to 9 GPa over a broad frequency range (200 - 20000 cm$^{-1}$) to monitor the vibrational and electronic/vibronic excitations under pressure. The four fundamental T$_{1u}$ modes of \C60a\ are split into doublets already at the lowest applied pressure and harden with increasing pressure. Several cation modes and fullerene-related modes split into doublets at around 2 GPa, the most prominent one being the G$_{1u}$ mode. The splitting of the vibrational modes can be attributed to the transition from the dynamic to static Jahn-Teller effect, caused by steric crowding at high pressure. Four absorption bands are observed in the NIR-VIS frequency range. They are discussed in terms of transitions between LUMO electronic states in \C60a, which are split because of the Jahn-Teller distortion and can be coupled with vibrational modes. Various distortions and the corresponding symmetry lowering are discussed. The observed redshift of the absorption bands indicates that the splitting of the LUMO electronic states is reduced upon pressure application.

Metal-insulator transition in NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$

The origin of the gap in NiS2 as well as the pressure- and doping-induced metal-insulator transition in the NiS2-xSex solid solutions are investigated both theoretically using the first-principles band structures combined with the dynamical mean-field approximation for the electronic correlations and experimentally by means of infrared and x-ray absorption spectroscopies. The bonding-antibonding splitting in the S-S (Se-Se) dimer is identified as the main parameter controlling the size of the charge gap. The implications for the metal-insulator transition driven by pressure and Se doping are discussed.

Two pressure-induced structural phase transitions in TiOCl

We studied the crystal structure of TiOCl up to pressures of $p$=25~GPa at room temperature by x-ray powder diffraction measurements. Two pressure-induced structural phase transitions are observed: At $p_{c1}$$\approx$15~GPa emerges an 2$a$$\times$2$b$$\times$$c$ superstructure with $b$-axis unique monoclinic symmetry (space group P2$_1$/$m$). At $p_{c2}$$\approx$22~GPa all lattice parameters of the monoclinic phase show a pronounced anomaly. A fraction of the sample persists in the ambient orthorhombic phase (space group $Pmmn$) over the whole pressure range.

Deconfinement transition and dimensional crossover in the Bechgaard-Fabre salts: pressure- and temperature-dependent optical investigations

The infrared response of the organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and the Mott insulator (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ are investigated as a function of temperature and pressure and for the polarization parallel and perpendicular to the molecular stacks. By applying external pressure on (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$, the Mott gap rapidly diminishes until the deconfinement transition occurs when the gap energy is approximately twice the interchain transfer integral. In its deconfined state (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ exhibits a crossover from a quasi-one-dimensional to a higher-dimensional metal upon reducing the temperature. For (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ this dimensional crossover is observed either with increase in external pressure or with decrease in temperature. We quantitatively determine the dimensional crossover line in the pressure-temperature diagram based on the degree of coherence in the optical response perpendicular to the molecular stacks.

Effect of high pressure on multiferroic BiFeO3

We report experimental evidence for pressure instabilities in the model multiferroic BiFeO3 and namely reveal two structural phase transitions around 3 GPa and 10 GPa by using diffraction and far-infrared spectroscopy at a synchrotron source. The intermediate phase from 3 to 9 GPa crystallizes in a monoclinic space group, with octahedra tilts and small cation displacements. When the pressure is further increased the cation displacements (and thus the polar character) of BiFeO3 is suppressed above 10 GPa. The above 10 GPa observed non-polar orthorhombic Pnma structure is in agreement with recent theoretical ab-initio prediction, while the intermediate monoclinic phase was not predicted theoretically.

Magnetic order induced crystal symmetry lowering in ACr$_2$O$_4$ ferrimagnetic spinels

We demonstrate that the onset of complex spin orders in ACr$_2$O$_4$ spinels with magnetic A$=$Co, Fe and Cu ions lowers the lattice symmetry. This is clearly indicated by the emergence of anisotropic lattice dynamics -- as evidenced by the pronounced phonon splittings -- even when experiments probing static distortions fail. We show that the crystal symmetry in the magnetic phase is reduced from tetragonal to orthorhombic for FeCr$_2$O$_4$ and CuCr$_2$O$_4$ with Jahn-Teller active A-site ions. The conical spin structure in FeCr$_2$O$_4$ is also manifested in the phonon frequencies. In contrast, the multiferroic CoCr$_2$O$_4$ with no orbital degrees of freedom remains nearly cubic in its ground state.

Pressure-induced metallization and structural phase transition of the Mott-Hubbard insulator TiOBr

We investigated the pressure-dependent optical response of the low-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator TiOBr by transmittance and reflectance measurements in the infrared and visible frequency range. A suppression of the transmittance above a critical pressure and a concomitant increase of the reflectance are observed, suggesting a pressure-induced metallization of TiOBr. The metallic phase of TiOBr at high pressure is confirmed by the presence of additional excitations extending down to the far-infrared range. The pressure-induced metallization coincides with a structural phase transition, according to the results of x-ray powder diffraction experiments under pressure.

Electronic properties of correlated metals in the vicinity of a charge order transition: optical spectroscopy of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2M$Hg(SCN)$_4$ ($M$ = NH$_4$, Rb, Tl)

The infrared spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional organic conductors $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$M$Hg(SCN)$_4$ ($M$ = NH$_4$, Rb, Tl) were measured in the range from 50 to 7000 \cm down to low temperatures in order to explore the influence of electronic correlations in quarter-filled metals. The interpretation of electronic spectra was confirmed by measurements of pressure dependant reflectance of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ at T=300 K. The signatures of charge order fluctuations become more pronounced when going from the NH$_4$ salt to Rb and further to Tl compounds. On reducing the temperature, the metallic character of the optical response in the NH$_4$ and Rb salts increases, and the effective mass diminishes. For the Tl compound, clear signatures of charge order are found albeit the metallic properties still dominate. From the temperature dependence of the electronic scattering rate the crossover temperature is estimated below which the coherent charge-carriers response sets in. The observations are in excellent agreement with recent theoretical predictions for a quarter-filled metallic system close to charge order.

Pressure-induced insulator-to-metal transition in low-dimensional TiOCl

We studied the transmittance and reflectance of the low-dimensional Mott-Hubbard insulator TiOCl in the infrared and visible frequency range as a function of pressure. The strong suppression of the transmittance and the abrupt increase of the near-infrared reflectance above 12 GPa suggest a pressure-induced insulator-to-metal transition. The pressure-dependent frequency shifts of the orbital excitations, as well as the pressure dependences of the charge gap and the spectral weight of the optical conductivity above the phase transition are presented.
