Absorption-based Quantum Communication with NV centres

We propose a scheme for performing an entanglement-swapping operation within a quantum communications hub (a Bell like measurement) using an NV centre's $|\pm 1\rangle \leftrightarrow | A_2 \rangle$ optical transition. This is based on the heralded absorption of a photon resonant with that transition. The quantum efficiency of a single photon absorption is low but can be improved by placing the NV center inside a micro cavity to boost the interaction time and further by recycling the leaked photon back into the cavity after flipping its phase and/or polarisation. Throughout this process, the NV is repeatedly monitored via a QND measurement that heralds whether or not the photon absorption has succeeded. Upon success we know a destructive Bell measurement has occurred between that photon and NV center. Given low losses and a high per-pass absorption probability, this scheme allows the total success probability to approach unity. With long electron spin coherence times possible at low temperatures, this component could be useful within a memory-based quantum repeater or relay.

Coherent control of an NV$^-$ center with one adjacent 13C

We investigate the theoretically achievable fidelities when coherently controlling an effective three qubit system consisting of a negatively charged nitrogen vacancy (NV$^-$) center in diamond with an additional nearby carbon $^{13}$C spin $I_{\text{C}}=1/2$ via square radio and microwave frequency pulses in different magnetic field regimes. Such a system has potentially interesting applications in quantum information related tasks such as distributed quantum computation or quantum repeater schemes. We find that the best fidelities can be achieved in an intermediate magnetic field regime. However, with only square pulses it will be challenging to reach the fidelity threshold(s) predicted by current models of fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Momentum classification of SU($n$) spin chains using extended Young Tableaux

Obtaining eigenvalues of permutations acting on the product space of $N$ representations of SU($n$) usually involves either diagonalising their representation matrices on total-weight subspaces or decomposing their characters, which can be obtained from Frobenius' formula or via graphical methods using Young tableaux. For products of fundamental representations of SU($n$), Schuricht and one of us proposed the method of extended Young Tableaux, which allows reading the eigenvalues of the cyclic permutation $C_N$ directly off the, slightly modified, standard Young tableaux labelling an irreducible SU($n$) representation. Here we generalise the method to all symmetric representations of SU($n$), and show that $C_N$ eigenvalue computation based on extended Young tableaux is at least linearly faster than the standard methods mentioned.

Fractional spin liquid hierarchy for spin S antiferromagnets

We propose a hierarchy of spin liquids with spin S, which are generated via a Schwinger boson projection from 2S (Abelian) chiral spin liquids with S=1/2. We argue that the P and T invariant liquids we construct for integer spin S support SU(2) level k=S non-Abelian statistics. We conjecture that these spin liquids serve as paradigms for antiferromagnets which are disordered through mobile charge carriers.

Spontaneous Parity Violation in a Quantum Spin Chain

We report on a spontaneous breakdown of parity in the ground state of a spin Hamiltonian involving nearest-neighbor interactions. This occurs for a one-dimensional model where spins transform under the gauge field representation of QCD, the eight-dimensional adjoint representation of SU(3). The ground state spontaneously violates parity and is two-fold degenerate. In addition, the model possesses a non-vanishing topological string order parameter which we explicate analytically.
