Rigidity of flag manifolds

Let $N\subset GL(n,R)$ be the group of upper triangular matrices with $1$s on the diagonal, equipped with the standard Carnot group structure. We show that quasiconformal homeomorphisms between open subsets of $N$, and more generally Sobolev mappings with nondegenerate Pansu differential, are rigid when $n \geq 4$; this settles the Regularity Conjecture for such groups. This result is deduced from a rigidity theorem for the manifold of complete flags in $R^n$. Similar results also hold in the complex and quaternion cases.

Sobolev mappings and the spectral sequence for Rumin's filtration on the de Rham complex

We consider Rumin's filtration on the de Rham complex of a Carnot group. Although Pansu pullback by a Sobolev map is filtration preserving, it need not be a chain mapping. Nonetheless, we show that Pansu pullback induces a mapping of the associated spectral sequences. This gives an alternate interpretation of the Pullback Theorem from our previous paper.

Sobolev mappings and the Rumin complex

We consider contact manifolds equipped with Carnot-Caratheodory metrics, and show that the Rumin complex is respected by Sobolev mappings: Pansu pullback induces a chain mapping between the smooth Rumin complex and the distributional Rumin complex. As a consequence, the Rumin flat complex -- the analog of the Whitney flat complex in the setting of contact manifolds -- is bilipschitz invariant. We also show that for Sobolev mappings between general Carnot groups, Pansu pullback induces a chain mapping when restricted to a certain differential ideal of the de Rham complex. Both results are applications of the Pullback Theorem from our previous paper.

Infinitesimal structure of differentiability spaces, and metric differentiation

We prove metric differentiation for differentiability spaces in the sense of Cheeger. As corollaries we give a new proof that the minimal generalized upper gradient coincides with the pointwise Lipschitz constant for Lipschitz functions on PI spaces, a proof that the Lip-lip constant of any Lip-lip space in the sense of Keith is equal to $1$, and new nonembeddability results.

Rectifiability of planes and Alberti representations

We study metric measure spaces that have quantitative topological control, as well as a weak form of differentiable structure. In particular, let $X$ be a pointwise doubling metric measure space. Let $U$ be a Borel subset on which the blowups of $X$ are topological planes. We show that $U$ can admit at most $2$ independent Alberti representations. Furthermore, if $U$ admits $2$ Alberti representations, then the restriction of the measure to $U$ is $2$-rectifiable. This is a partial answer to the case $n=2$ of a question of the second author and Schioppa.

Rectifiability of sets of finite perimeter in Carnot groups: existence of a tangent hyperplane

We consider sets of locally finite perimeter in Carnot groups. We show that if E is a set of locally finite perimeter in a Carnot group G, then for almost every x in G with respect to the perimeter measure of E, some tangent of E at x is a vertical halfspace. This is a partial extension of a theorem of Franchi-Serapioni-Serra Cassano in step 2 Carnot groups: they have shown that, for almost every x, E has a unique tangent at x, and this tangent is a vertical halfspace.

Geometrization of Three-Dimensional Orbifolds via Ricci Flow

A three-dimensional closed orientable orbifold (with no bad suborbifolds) is known to have a geometric decomposition from work of Perelman along with earlier work of Boileau-Leeb-Porti and Cooper-Hodgson-Kerckhoff. We give a new, logically independent, unified proof of the geometrization of orbifolds, using Ricci flow. Along the way we develop some tools for the geometry of orbifolds that may be of independent interest.

Mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces

In the last 15 years, White and Huisken-Sinestrari developed a far-reaching structure theory for the mean curvature flow of mean convex hypersurfaces. Their papers provide a package of estimates and structural results that yield a precise description of singularities and of high curvature regions in a mean convex flow. In the present paper, we give a new treatment of the theory of mean convex (and k-convex) flows. This includes: (1) an estimate for derivatives of curvatures, (2) a convexity estimate, (3) a cylindrical estimate, (4) a global convergence theorem, (5) a structure theorem for ancient solutions, and (6) a partial regularity theorem. Our new proofs are both more elementary and substantially shorter than the original arguments. Our estimates are local and universal. A key ingredient in our new approach is the new non- collapsing result of Andrews. Some parts are also inspired by the work of Perelman. In a forthcoming paper, we will give a new construction of mean curvature flow with surgery based on the theorems established in the present paper.

Inverse limit spaces satisfying a Poincare inequality

We give conditions on Gromov-Hausdorff convergent inverse systems of metric measure graphs (and certain higher dimensional inverse systems of metric measure spaces) which imply that the measured Gromov-Hausdorff limit (equivalently, the inverse limit) is a PI space, i.e. it satisfies a doubling condition and a Poincare inequality in the sense of Heinonen-Koskela. We also give a systematic construction of examples for which our conditions are satisfied. Included are known examples of PI spaces, such as Laakso spaces, and a large class of new examples. Generically our graph examples have the property that they do not bilipschitz embed in any Banach space with Radon-Nikodym property, but they do embed in the Banach space L_1. For Laakso spaces, these facts were discussed in our earlier papers.

Some applications of l_p-cohomology to boundaries of Gromov hyperbolic spaces

We study quasi-isometry invariants of Gromov hyperbolic spaces, focussing on the l_p-cohomology and closely related invariants such as the conformal dimension, combinatorial modulus, and the Combinatorial Loewner Property. We give new constructions of continuous l_p-cohomology, thereby obtaining information about the l_p-equivalence relation, as well as critical exponents associated with l_p-cohomology. As an application, we provide a flexible construction of hyperbolic groups which do not have the Combinatorial Loewner Property, extending and complementing earlier examples. Another consequence is the existence of hyperbolic groups with Sierpinski carpet boundary which have conformal dimension arbitrarily close to 1. In particular, we answer questions of Mario Bonk and John Mackay.

Realization of metric spaces as inverse limits, and bilipschitz embedding in L_1

We give sufficient conditions for a metric space to bilipschitz embed in L_1. In particular, if X is a length space and there is a Lipschitz map u:X--->R such that for every interval I in R, the connected components of the inverse image f^{-1}(I) have diameter at most a constant time the diameter of I, then X admits a bilipschitz embedding in L_1. As a corollary, well-known examples of Laakso bilipschitz embed in L_1, though they do not embed in any any Banach space with the Radon-Nikodym property (e.g. the space l_1 of summable sequences). The spaces appearing the statement of the bilipschitz embedding theorem have an alternate characterization as inverse limits of systems of metric graphs satisfying certain additional conditions. This representation, which may be of independent interest, is the initial part of the proof of the bilipschitz embedding theorem. The rest of the proof uses the combinatorial structure of the inverse system of graphs and a diffusion construction, to produce the embedding in L_1.

Rigidity of Schottky sets

We call a complement of a union of at least three disjoint (round) open balls in the unit sphere S^n a Schottky set. We prove that every quasisymmetric homeomorphism of a Schottky set of spherical measure zero to another Schottky set is the restriction of a Mobius transformation on S^n. In the other direction we show that every Schottky set in S^2 of positive measure admits non-trivial quasisymmetric maps to other Schottky sets. These results are applied to establish rigidity statements for convex subsets of hyperbolic space that have totally geodesic boundaries.

Geometry and rigidity of mapping class groups

We study the large scale geometry of mapping class groups MCG(S), using hyperbolicity properties of curve complexes. We show that any self quasi-isometry of MCG(S) (outside a few sporadic cases) is a bounded distance away from a left-multiplication, and as a consequence obtain quasi-isometric rigidity for MCG(S), namely that groups quasi-isometric to MCG(S) are virtually equal to it. (The latter theorem was proved by Hamenstadt using different methods). As part of our approach we obtain several other structural results: a description of the tree-graded structure on the asymptotic cone of MCG(S); a characterization of the image of the curve-complex projection map from MCG(S) to the product of the curve complexes of essential subsurfaces of S; and a construction of Sigma-hulls in MCG(S), an analogue of convex hulls.

Metric differentiation, monotonicity and maps to L^1

We give a new approach to the infinitesimal structure of Lipschitz maps into L^1. As a first application, we give an alternative proof of the main theorem from an earlier paper, that the Heisenberg group does not admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding in L^1. The proof uses the metric differentiation theorem of Pauls and the cut metric decomposition to reduce the nonembedding argument to a classification of monotone subsets of the Heisenberg group.

Erratum on "Hadamard spaces with isolated flats"

The purpose of this erratum is to correct the proof of Theorem A.0.1 in the appendix to our article ``Hadamard spaces with isolated flats'' math.GR/0411232, which was jointly authored by Mohamad Hindawi, Hruska and Kleiner. In that appendix, many of the results of math.GR/0411232 about CAT(0) spaces with isolated flats are extended to a more general setting in which the isolated subspaces are not necessarily flats. However, one step of that extension does not follow from the argument we used the isolated flats setting. We provide a new proof that fills this gap. In addition, we give a more detailed account of several other parts of Theorem A.0.1, which were sketched in math.GR/0411232.

Hadamard spaces with isolated flats

We explore the geometry of nonpositively curved spaces with isolated flats, and its consequences for groups that act properly discontinuously, cocompactly, and isometrically on such spaces. We prove that the geometric boundary of the space is an invariant of the group up to equivariant homeomorphism. We also prove that any such group is relatively hyperbolic, biautomatic, and satisfies the Tits Alternative. The main step in establishing these results is a characterization of spaces with isolated flats as relatively hyperbolic with respect to flats. Finally we show that a CAT(0) space has isolated flats if and only if its Tits boundary is a disjoint union of isolated points and standard Euclidean spheres. In an appendix written jointly with Hindawi, we extend many of the results of this article to a more general setting in which the isolated subspaces are not required to be flats.

Quasisymmetric parametrizations of two-dimensional metric spheres

We study metric spaces homeomorphic to the 2-sphere, and find conditions under which they are quasisymmetrically homeomorphic to the standard 2-sphere. As an application of our main theorem we show that an Ahlfors 2-regular, linearly locally contractible metric 2-sphere is quasisymmetrically homeomorphic to the standard 2-sphere, answering a question of Heinonen and Semmes.
