Splitting Algebras: Koszul, Cohen-Macaulay and Numerically Koszul

We study a finite dimensional quadratic graded algebra R defined from a finite ranked poset. This algebra has been central to the study of the splitting algebra of the poset, A, as introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson . The algebra A is known to be quadratic when the poset satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, and R is the quadratic dual of an associated graded algebra of A. We prove that R is Koszul and the poset is uniform if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. Koszulity of R implies Koszulity of A. We also show that when R is Koszul, the cohomology of the order complex of the poset can be identified with certain cohomology groups defined internally to the ring R. Finally, we settle in the negative the long-standing question: Does numerically Koszul imply Koszul for algebras of the form R?

Splitting Algebras II: The Cohomology Algebra

Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson, in \cite{GRSW}, defined a graded algebra AΓA_Γ attached to any finite ranked poset ΓΓ - a generalization of the universal algebra of pseudo-roots of noncommutative polynomials. This algebra has since come to be known as the splitting algebra of ΓΓ. The splitting algebra has a secondary filtration related to the rank function on the poset and the associated graded algebra is denoted here by AΓ′A'_Γ. We calculate the cohomology algebra (and coalgebra) of AΓ′A'_Γ explicitly. As a corollary to this calculation we have a proof that AΓ′A'_Γ is Koszul (respectively quadratic) if and only if ΓΓ is Cohen-Macaulay (respectively uniform). We show by example that the cohomology algebra (resp. coalgebra) of AΓA_Γ may be strictly smaller that the cohomology algebra (resp. coalgebra) of AΓ′A'_Γ.

Noncommutative Koszul Algebras from Combinatorial Topology

Associated to any uniform finite layered graph Gamma there is a noncommutative graded quadratic algebra A(Gamma) given by a construction due to Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson. It is natural to ask when these algebras are Koszul. Unfortunately, a mistake in the literature states that all such algebras are Koszul. That is not the case and the theorem was recently retracted. We analyze the Koszul property of these algebras for two large classes of graphs associated to finite regular CW complexes, X. Our methods are primarily topological. We solve the Koszul problem by introducing new cohomology groups H_X(n,k), generalizing the usual cohomology groups H^n(X). Along with several other results, our methods give a new and primarily topological proof of a result of Serconek and Wilson and of Piontkovski.
