Weakly Cohen-Macaulay posets and a class of finite-dimensional graded quadratic algebras

To a finite ranked poset ΓΓ we associate a finite-dimensional graded quadratic algebra RΓR_Γ. Assuming ΓΓ satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, RΓR_Γ is related to a well-known algebra, the splitting algebra AΓA_Γ. First introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek, and Wilson, splitting algebras originated from the problem of factoring non-commuting polynomials. Given a finite ranked poset ΓΓ, we ask: Is RΓR_Γ Koszul? The Koszulity of RΓR_Γ is related to a combinatorial topology property of ΓΓ called Cohen-Macaulay. Kloefkorn and Shelton proved that if ΓΓ is a finite ranked cyclic poset, then ΓΓ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if ΓΓ is uniform and RΓR_Γ is Koszul. We define a new generalization of Cohen-Macaulay, weakly Cohen-Macaulay, and we note that this new class includes posets with disconnected open subintervals. We prove: if ΓΓ is a finite ranked cyclic poset, then ΓΓ is weakly Cohen-Macaulay if and only if RΓR_Γ is Koszul.

Splitting Algebras: Koszul, Cohen-Macaulay and Numerically Koszul

We study a finite dimensional quadratic graded algebra R defined from a finite ranked poset. This algebra has been central to the study of the splitting algebra of the poset, A, as introduced by Gelfand, Retakh, Serconek and Wilson . The algebra A is known to be quadratic when the poset satisfies a combinatorial condition known as uniform, and R is the quadratic dual of an associated graded algebra of A. We prove that R is Koszul and the poset is uniform if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. Koszulity of R implies Koszulity of A. We also show that when R is Koszul, the cohomology of the order complex of the poset can be identified with certain cohomology groups defined internally to the ring R. Finally, we settle in the negative the long-standing question: Does numerically Koszul imply Koszul for algebras of the form R?
