Geometry and arithmetic of integrable hierarchies of KdV type. I. Integrality

For each of the simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=A_l$, $D_l$ or $E_6$, we show that the all-genera one-point FJRW invariants of $\mathfrak{g}$-type, after multiplication by suitable products of Pochhammer symbols, are the coefficients of an algebraic generating function and hence are integral. Moreover, we find that the all-genera invariants themselves coincide with the coefficients of the unique calibration of the Frobenius manifold of $\mathfrak{g}$-type evaluated at a special point. For the $A_4$ (5-spin) case we also find two other normalizations of the sequence that are again integral and of at most exponential growth, and hence conjecturally are the Taylor coefficients of some period functions.

On tau-functions for the KdV hierarchy

For an arbitrary solution to the KdV hierarchy, the generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-function of the solution can be expressed by the basic matrix resolvent via algebraic manipulations. Based on this we develop in this paper two new formulae for the generating series by introducing a pair of wave functions of the solution. Applications to the Witten--Kontsevich tau-function, to the generalized Brézin--Gross--Witten (BGW) tau-function, as well as to a modular deformation of the generalized BGW tau-function which we call the Lamé tau-function are also given.

Integrable systems of double ramification type

In this paper we study various aspects of the double ramification (DR) hierarchy, introduced by the first author, and its quantization. We extend the notion of tau-symmetry to quantum integrable hierarchies and prove that the quantum DR hierarchy enjoys this property. We determine explicitly the genus $1$ quantum correction and, as an application, compute completely the quantization of the $3$- and $4$-KdV hierarchies (the DR hierarchies for Witten's $3$- and $4$-spin theories). We then focus on the recursion relation satisfied by the DR Hamiltonian densities and, abstracting from its geometric origin, we use it to characterize and construct a new family of quantum and classical integrable systems which we call of double ramification type, as they satisfy all of the main properties of the DR hierarchy. In the second part, we obtain new insight towards the Miura equivalence conjecture between the DR and Dubrovin-Zhang hierarchies, via a geometric interpretation of the correlators forming the double ramification tau-function. We then show that the candidate Miura transformation between the DR and DZ hierarchies (which we uniquely identified in our previous paper) indeed turns the Dubrovin-Zhang Poisson structure into the standard form. Eventually, we focus on integrable hierarchies associated with rank-$1$ cohomological field theories and their deformations, and we prove the DR/DZ equivalence conjecture up to genus $5$ in this context.

Local Moduli of Semisimple Frobenius Coalescent Structures

We extend the analytic theory of Frobenius manifolds to semisimple points with coalescing eigenvalues of the operator of multiplication by the Euler vector field. We clarify which freedoms, ambiguities and mutual constraints are allowed in the definition of monodromy data, in view of their importance for conjectural relationships between Frobenius manifolds and derived categories. Detailed examples and applications are taken from singularity and quantum cohomology theories. We explicitly compute the monodromy data at points of the Maxwell Stratum of the A3-Frobenius manifold, as well as at the small quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian G(2,4). In the latter case, we analyse in details the action of the braid group on the monodromy data. This proves that these data can be expressed in terms of characteristic classes of mutations of Kapranov's exceptional 5-block collection, as conjectured by one of the authors.

Matrix resolvent and the discrete KdV hierarchy

Based on the matrix-resolvent approach, for an arbitrary solution to the discrete KdV hierarchy, we define the tau-function of the solution, and compare it with another tau-function of the solution defined via reduction of the Toda lattice hierarchy. Explicit formulae for generating series of logarithmic derivatives of the tau-functions are then obtained, and applications to enumeration of ribbon graphs with even valencies and to the special cubic Hodge integrals are considered.

On critical behaviour in generalized Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equations

An asymptotic description of the formation of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation is conjectured. The asymptotic description based on a multiscales expansion is given in terms of a special solution to an ordinary differential equation of the Painleve' I hierarchy. Several examples are discussed numerically to provide strong evidence for the validity of the conjecture.

Simple Lie algebras and topological ODEs

For a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$ we define a system of linear ODEs with polynomial coefficients, which we call the topological equation of $\mathfrak g$-type. The dimension of the space of solutions regular at infinity is equal to the rank of the Lie algebra. For the simplest example $\mathfrak g=sl_2(\mathbb C)$ the regular solution can be expressed via products of Airy functions and their derivatives; this matrix valued function was used in our previous work for computing logarithmic derivatives of the Witten - Kontsevich tau-function. For an arbitrary simple Lie algebra we construct a basis in the space of regular solutions to the topological equation called generalized Airy resolvents. We also outline applications of the generalized Airy resolvents to computing the Witten and Fan - Jarvis - Ruan invariants of the Deligne - Mumford moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves.

Hodge integrals and tau-symmetric integrable hierarchies of Hamiltonian evolutionary PDEs

For an arbitrary semisimple Frobenius manifold we construct Hodge integrable hierarchy of Hamiltonian partial differential equations. In the particular case of quantum cohomology the tau-function of a solution to the hierarchy generates the intersection numbers of the Gromov--Witten classes and their descendents along with the characteristic classes of Hodge bundles on the moduli spaces of stable maps. For the one-dimensional Frobenius manifold the Hodge hierarchy is a deformation of the Korteweg--de Vries hierarchy depending on an infinite number of parameters. Conjecturally this hierarchy is a universal object in the class of scalar Hamiltonian integrable hierarchies possessing tau-functions.

Minimal Liouville Gravity correlation numbers from Douglas string equation

We continue the study of $(q,p)$ Minimal Liouville Gravity with the help of Douglas string equation. We generalize the results of \cite{Moore:1991ir}, \cite{Belavin:2008kv}, where Lee-Yang series $(2,2s+1)$ was studied, to $(3,3s+p_0)$ Minimal Liouville Gravity, where $p_0=1,2$. We demonstrate that there exist such coordinates $τ_{m,n}$ on the space of the perturbed Minimal Liouville Gravity theories, in which the partition function of the theory is determined by the Douglas string equation. The coordinates $τ_{m,n}$ are related in a non-linear fashion to the natural coupling constants $λ_{m,n}$ of the perturbations of Minimal Lioville Gravity by the physical operators $O_{m,n}$. We find this relation from the requirement that the correlation numbers in Minimal Liouville Gravity must satisfy the conformal and fusion selection rules. After fixing this relation we compute three- and four-point correlation numbers when they are not zero. The results are in agreement with the direct calculations in Minimal Liouville Gravity available in the literature \cite{Goulian:1990qr}, \cite{Zamolodchikov:2005sj}, \cite{Belavin:2006ex}.

On an isomonodromy deformation equation without the Painlevé property

We show that the fourth order nonlinear ODE which controls the pole dynamics in the general solution of equation $P_I^2$ compatible with the KdV equation exhibits two remarkable properties: 1) it governs the isomonodromy deformations of a $2\times2$ matrix linear ODE with polynomial coefficients, and 2) it does not possesses the Painlevé property. We also study the properties of the Riemann--Hilbert problem associated to this ODE and find its large $t$ asymptotic solution for the physically interesting initial data.

On critical behavior in nonlinear evolutionary PDEs with small viscosity

We address the problem of general dissipative regularization of the quasilinear transport equation. We argue that the local behavior of solutions to the regularized equation near the point of gradient catastrophe for the transport equation is described by the logarithmic derivative of the Pearcey function, a statement generalizing the result of A.M.Il'in. We provide some analytic arguments supporting such conjecture and test it numerically.

On the Genus Two Free Energies for Semisimple Frobenius Manifolds

We represent the genus two free energy of an arbitrary semisimple Frobenius manifold as a sum of contributions associated with dual graphs of certain stable algebraic curves of genus two plus the so-called "genus two G-function". Conjecturally the genus two G-function vanishes for a series of important examples of Frobenius manifolds associated with simple singularities as well as for ${\bf P}^1$-orbifolds with positive Euler characteristics. We explain the reasons for such Conjecture and prove it in certain particular cases.
