A narrow bandwidth extreme ultra-violet light source for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Here we present a high repetition rate, narrow band-width, extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon source for time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (tr-ARPES). The narrow band width pulses $ΔE=9, 14, 18$ meV for photon energies $hν=10.8, 18.1, 25.3$ eV are generated through High Harmonic Generation (HHG) using ultra-violet (UV) drive pulses with relatively long pulse lengths (461 fs). The HHG setup employs an annuluar drive beam in a tight focusing geometry at a repetition rate of 250 kHz. Photon energy selection is provided by a series of selectable multilayer bandpass mirrors and thin film filters, thus avoiding any time broadening introduced by single grating monochromators. A two stage optical-parametric amplifier provides $< 100$ fs tunable pump pulses from 0.65 $μ$m to 9 $μ$m. The narrow bandwidth performance of the light source is demonstrated through ARPES measurements on a series of quantum materials including the high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212, WSe$_2$ and graphene.

Toward a measurement of the effective gauge field and the Born-Huang potential with atoms in chip traps

We study magnetic traps with very high trap frequencies where the spin is coupled to the motion of the atom. This allows us to investigate how the Born-Oppenheimer approximation fails and how effective magnetic and electric fields appear as the consequence of the non-adiabatic dynamics. The results are based on exact numerical diagonalization of the full Hamiltonian describing the coupling between the internal and external degrees of freedom. The position in energy and the decay rate of the trapping states correspond to the imaginary part of the resonances of this Hamiltonian and are computed using the complex rotation method.

Realization of adiabatic Aharonov-Bohm scattering with neutrons

The adiabatic Aharonov-Bohm (AB) effect is a manifestation of the Berry phase acquired when some slow variables take a planar spin around a loop. While the effect has been observed in molecular spectroscopy, direct measurement of the topological phase shift in a scattering experiment has been elusive in the past. Here, we demonstrate an adiabatic AB effect by explicit simulation of the dynamics of unpolarized very slow neutrons that scatter on a long straight current-carrying wire.

Robustness of non-adiabatic holonomic gates

The robustness to different sources of error of the scheme for non-adiabatic holonomic gates proposed in [New J. Phys. {\bf 14}, 103035 (2012)] is investigated. Open system effects as well as errors in the driving fields are considered. It is found that the gates can be made error resilient by using sufficiently short pulses. The principal limit of how short the pulses can be made is given by the breakdown of the quasi-monochromatic approximation. A comparison with the resilience of adiabatic gates is carried out.

Non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation

We develop a non-adiabatic generalization of holonomic quantum computation in which high-speed universal quantum gates can be realized by using non-Abelian geometric phases. We show how a set of non-adiabatic holonomic one- and two-qubit gates can be implemented by utilizing optical transitions in a generic three-level $Λ$ configuration. Our scheme opens up for universal holonomic quantum computation on qubits characterized by short coherence times.
