Collective motion of mutually coupled Thomas Oscillators: Spatially Separated Swirling Motion and Eddy Diffusion

In this letter, we report a numerical study on the collective dynamics of two mutually coupled Thomas oscillators with linear/nonlinear coupling in a dynamic environment. We claim our model calculations can explain the diffusion of interacting particles in a fluid. In an ordinary fluid, frequent momentum transfer between particles keeps the particles in a fluid moving together with correlated time behaviour. The diffusion of interacting particles in a dynamic environment like this is a nonequilibrium phenomenon and is similar to the observed transient chaotic dynamics in the model. The detailed study of the nature of dynamics and synchronization reveals that, for two qualitatively different regimes of system parameters, the coupled system passes through an interval of transient chaos before it settles into a chaotic or limit cycle attractor. The linear diffusive coupling is equivalent to weak momentum transfer, leading to conventional dynamics and synchronization. The sinusoidal nonlinear coupling, harmonic momentum transfer, produces exceptional dynamical features. The nature of synchronization is complete(directed motion) when the attractor is chaotic or an unstable transient attractor. In contrast, it is either lag, anti-lag, or space lag for a limit cycle. In such situations, the diffusion is due to particles pedalling and eddy/swirling motion on top of translatory motion via transient chaos. Also, the trajectories of the two particles in the state space resemble a Chiral Phenomenon.

Effects of structural distortion on electronic and optical properties of defect CdGa_2X_4 (X = S, Se, Te) Chalcopyrite Semiconductor

We observe significant effects of structural distortion on electronic and optical properties of CdGa_2X_4 (X = S, Se, Te) defect chalcopyrite. The calculation is carried out within Density functional theory based tight binding linear muffin tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. Structural parameters and band gap of CdGa_2X_4 agree well with the available experimental values within LDA limit. Change in band gap due to structural distortion is 3.63%, 4.0%, and 8.8% respectively. We observe significant change in optical properties also due to this effect. Effects on optical properties come mainly from optical matrix elements. Our results of these response functions agree well with the available experimental values.

Magnetism on Rough Surfaces of Fe, Co and Ni : An Augmented Space Approach

The augmented space formalism coupled with the recursion method and a tight-binding linear Muffin-tin orbitals basis has been applied to study the effects of roughness on the properties of (001) surfaces of body-centered cubic Fe and face-centered cubic Co and Ni. The formalism is also proposed for the study of smooth surface. Comparisons have been made for three types of surfaces: a smooth surface, the surface with a rough top layer, and a more realistic model with several rough top layers converging into a crystalline bulk. Comparisons have been made between the magnetic moments, work function and electronic density of states in the three models described above.

Surface Magnetism of Fe(001), Co(001) and Ni(001)

The Augmented Space Formalism coupled with Recursion method and Density Functional Theory based Tight-Binding Linear Muffin-Tin Orbitals have been applied for a first principles calculation of surface electronic and magnetic properties of body centered cubic Fe(001) and face centered cubic Co(001) and Ni(001). Nine atomic layers have been studied to see the trend of change in these properties from surface into the bulk. Surface magnetic moment has been found to be higher than that of the bulk and in different layers below, magnetic moments show Friedel oscillations in agreement with other studies. Work functions of these systems have been found to agree with experimental values. We propose this real space technique to be suitable for the study of localized physical properties like surface layers and it is also suitable for the study rough surfaces and interfaces.

Effect of structural distortion and nature of bonding on the electronic properties of defect and Li doped CulnSe2Chalcopyrite Semiconductors

We report the structural and electronic properties of chalcopyrite semiconductors CuInSe2, CuIn2 Se4 and Cu0.5Li0.5InSe2. Our calculation is based on Density functional Theory within tight binding linear muffin-tin orbital (TB-LMTO) method. The calculated lattice constants, anion displacement (u), tetragonal distortion (η = c/2a) and bond lengths agree well with experimental values. Our result shows these compounds are direct band gap semiconductors. Our calculated band gaps, 0.79eV and 1.08 eV of CuInSe2 and Cu0.5Li0.5InSe2 respectively agree well with the experimental values within the limitation of LDA. The band gap of CuIn2Se4 is found to be 1.50 eV. The band gap reduces by 59.57%, 23.61% and 48.82% due to p-d hybridization and reduces by 16.85%, 9.10% and 0.92% due to structural distortion for CuInSe2, CuIn2Se4 and Cu0.5Li0.5InSe2 respectively. We also discuss the effect of bond nature on electronic properties of all three compounds.
