Accurate determination of quadrupole polarizabilities of the excited states of alkali-metal atoms

The scalar and tensor components of the electric quadrupole (E2) polarizabilities of the first two excited states of all the alkali-metal atoms are determined. To validate the calculations, we have evaluated the ground state E2 polarizabilities of these atoms and compared them with the literature values. We could not find the ground state E2 polarizability value for Fr in the literature to compare with our result. The dominant parts of these quantities are estimated by combining the precisely calculated E2 transition matrix elements of many low-lying transitions with the experimental energies, while the other contributions are estimated using lower-order methods. Our estimated values for the ground states of the above atoms are in good agreement with the literature values suggesting that our estimated E2 polarizabilities for the excited states of the alkali atoms, which were not known earlier except for the Li atom, are also quite accurate. These reported E2 polarizabilities could be useful in guiding many precision measurements in the alkali atoms.

Dispersion $C_3$ coefficients for physisorption of heavy ions and atoms with graphene and carbon nanotubes

In the present work, the calculations have been performed for dispersion interaction between heavy elements (Zn$^+$, Cd$^+$, Hg$^+$, Pb$^+$, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Pb) with graphene and carbon nanotubes by evaluating van der Waals $C_3$ coefficients using well-known Lifshitz theory. The dispersion coefficients are expressed in terms of reflection coefficients of graphene and carbon nanotubes which are calculated within the framework of Dirac model. In addition, accurate values of dynamic dipole polarizabilities at imaginary frequencies of considered ions and atoms which are vital, have been calculated using relativistic methods. The comparisons of our calculated static dipole polarizabilities for the considered elements with the values reported in the literature are also presented. The dispersion interactions of the considered heavy elements with the graphene and carbon nanotubes of different radii in a wide range of separation distances have been studied. The results have also been analysed with another subtle variable, i.e., gap parameter of graphene wall. The interaction coefficients obtained for both the materials, i.e., for graphene and carbon nanotubes are mutually compared and it is found that graphene can be said as preferable material for adsorption of these toxic heavy elements.

Generating sustained coherence in a quantum memory for retrieval at the times of quantum revival

We study the time degradation of quantum information stored in a quantum memory device under a dissipative environment in a parameter range which is experimentally relevant. The quantum memory under consideration comprises of an optomechanical system with additional Kerr non-linearity in the optical mode and an anharmonic mechanical oscillator with quadratic non-linearity. Time degradation is monitored, both in terms of loss of coherence which is analyzed with the help of Wigner functions, as well as in terms of loss of amplitude of the original state studied as a function of time. While our time trajectories explore the degree to which the stored information degrades depending upon the variation in values of various parameters involved, we suggest a set of parameters for which the original information can be retrieved without degradation. We come across a highly attention seeking situation where the role played by the non-linearity is insignificant and the system behaves as if the information is stored in a linear medium. For this case, the information retrieval is independent of the coherence revival time and can be retrieved at any instant during the time evolution.

Radiative properties of Cu-isoelectronic As, Se and Br ions for astrophysical applications

We present precise radiative data of line strengths, transition probabilities and oscillator strengths for the allowed transitions among the $nS_{1/2}$, $nP_{1/2,3/2}$, $n'D_{3/2,5/2}$ and $n'F_{5/2,7/2}$ states with $n=4$ to $6$ and $n'=4,5$ of the Cu-isoelectronic As, Se and Br ions. Due to unavailability of precise observations of these spectroscopic data, their accurate estimations are of great interest and useful in analyzing various astrophysical phenomena undergoing inside the heavenly bodies that contain As, Se and Br elements. An all-order perturbative many-body method in the relativistic theory framework has been employed to determine the atomic wave functions, which are further used to estimate the above quantities with the uncertainties. We found significant differences between some of our results and results that are available earlier.

Roles of Blackbody Friction Forces in the Rb and Cs Atom Interferometers

Atom interferometry is amongst the most advanced technologies that provides very high-precision measurements. There can exist a number of obscure forces that can interfere with the atoms used in this instrument. In the present work, we are probing possible roles of one such important forces, known as ``blackbody friction force (BBFF)'', that may affect the precisions in the measurements made using atom interferometers based on the Rb and Cs atoms. The BBFF can be generated on atoms due to the black-body radiations emitted by the stray electromagnetic fields present in the experimental set-up and other metallic shielding. The strength of the BBFF can be calculated by integrating the complex parts of the dynamic polarizabilities of atoms, which show varying behaviour at the resonant and non-resonant transitions in the above atoms. Our analyses suggest that the off-resonant atomic transitions make significant contributions to the BBFF at low temperatures in the Rb and Cs atom interferometers. Present study also advocates that it is imperative to carry out the integration over a wide spectrum of frequencies for correct evaluation of the BBFF; specially at higher temperatures.

Spectroscopic data of Rb-isoelectronic Zr and Nb ions for astrophysical applications

We present high-accuracy spectroscopy data of line strengths, transition probabilities and oscillator strengths for the allowed transitions among the $nS_{1/2}$, $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $n'D_{3/2,5/2}$ states with $n=5$ to $10$ and $n'=4$ to $10$ of the Rb-isoelectronic Zr (Zr IV) and Nb (Nb V) ions. %\textcolor{red}{except for a few transitions that seem to be unreliable.} They can serve to analyse various astrophysical phenomena undergoing inside the heavenly bodies containing Zr and Nb elements. Since there is a lack of precise observational and calculated data for the spectroscopic properties in the above ions, their accurate determinations are of immense interest. The literature data, that are available only for a few selected low-lying transitions, have large discrepancies and they cannot be used reliably for the above purpose. After accounting for electron interactions through random phase approximation, Brückner orbitals, structural radiations and normalizations of wave functions in the relativistic many-body methods, we have evaluated the electric dipole amplitudes precisely. Combining these values with the observed wavelengths, the above transition properties and lifetimes of a number of excited states of the Zr IV and Nb V ions are determined and compared with the literature data.

Tune-out and magic wavelengths, and electric quadrupole transition properties of the singly charged alkaline-earth metal ions

In continuation to our earlier reported data on the electric dipole (E1) matrix elements and lifetimes of the metastable states of the alkaline earth ions in [Atomic Data and Nuc. Data Tables {\bf 137} (2021) 101381], we present here the tune-out and magic wavelengths of the Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth-metal ions by determining dynamic E1 polarizabilities. Furthermore, we have evaluated the electric quadrupole (E2) matrix elements of a large number of forbidden transitions using an all-order relativistic many-body method and compare them with the previously reported values for a few selective transitions. Compilation of both the E1 and E2 transition matrix elements, will now provide a more complete knowledge about the transition properties of the considered singly charged alkaline earth-metal ions. Similarly, the listed precise values of tune-out and magic wavelengths due to the dominant E1 polarizabilities can be helpful to conduct experiments using the above ions with reduced systematics. Therefore, all these data will be immensely useful for various applications for carrying out the high-precision experiments and laboratory simulations in atomic physics, and interpreting transition lines in the astrophysical observations.

Two-dipole and three-dipole interaction coefficients of GROUP XII elements

The study of long-range interactions is increasingly becoming essential due to its various applications in cold atomic physics. These interactions can be conveniently expressed in terms of dispersion coefficients. In the present work, theoretical calculations have been carried out to estimate the two-dipole ($C_6$) and three-dipole ($C_9$) dispersion coefficients between the group XII atoms and their ions, \textit{viz.}, Zn, Cd, Hg, Zn$^+$, Cd$^+$, and Hg$^+$. To obtain these coefficients, the dynamic dipole polarizabilities and reduced matrix elements required are evaluated using the relativistic methods for both the considered atoms and ions. Further, using the calculated matrix elements, the oscillator strengths corresponding to leading transitions and static dipole polarizabilities are determined. These are compared with the available values in the literature through which the accuracy of the present calculations ascertains. However, the oscillator strengths for few transitions of Zn, Cd, Hg, Zn$^+$, Cd$^+$, and Hg$^+$, are not reported earlier, and we have provided their values in this work. Thereafter, the dispersion $C_6$ and $C_9$ coefficients are calculated for various combinations of the group XII elements, and most of these coefficients were not reported earlier in the literature. Furthermore, the combinations for which the other theoretical and experimental values were available for comparison showed good agreement. We, therefore, believe that our results reported for $C_6$ and $C_9$ coefficients for various combinations of group XII elements are reliable.

Accurate determination of energy levels, hyperfine structure constants, lifetimes and dipole polarizabilities of triply ionized tin isotopes

We have investigated energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants ($A_{hyf}$) and electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of a number of low-lying states of the triply ionized tin (Sn$^{3+}$) by employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Contributions from the Breit interaction and lower-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effects in determination of above quantities are also given explicitly. These higher-order relativistic effects are found to be important for accurate evaluation of energies, while QED contributions are seen to be contributing significantly to the determination of $A_{hyf}$ values. Our theoretical results for energies are in agreement with one of the measurements but show significant differences for some states with another measurement. Reported $A_{hyf}$ will be useful in guiding measurements of hyperfine levels in the stable isotopes of Sn$^{3+}$. The calculated E1 matrix elements are further used to estimate oscillator strengths, transition probabilities and dipole polarizabilities ($α$) of many states. Large discrepancies between present results and previous calculations of oscillator strengths and transition probabilities are observed for a number of states. The estimated $α$ values will be useful for carrying out high precision measurements using Sn$^{3+}$ ion in future experiments.

Two-dipole and three-dipole dispersion coefficients for interaction of alkaline-earth atoms with alkaline-earth atoms and alkaline-earth ions

Apropos to the growing interest in the study of long-range interactions which for their applications in cold atom physics, we have performed theoretical calculation for the two-dipole $C_6$ and three-dipole $C_9$ dispersion coefficients involving alkaline-earth atoms with alkaline-earth atoms and alkaline-earth ions. The $C_6$ and $C_9$ coefficients are expressed in terms of the dynamic dipole polarizabilities, which are calculated using relativistic methods. Thereafter, the calculated $C_6$ coefficients for the considered alkaline-earth atoms among themselves are compared with the previously reported values. Due to unavailability of any other earlier theoretical or experimental results, for the $C_6$ coefficients for alkaline-earth atoms with alkaline-earth ions and the $C_9$ coefficients, we have performed separate fitting calculations and compared. Our calculations match in an excellent manner with the fitting calculations. We have also reported the oscillator strengths for the leading transitions and static dipole polarizabilities for the ground states of the alkaline-earth ions, i.e., Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, and Ba$^+$ as well as the alkaline-earth atoms, i.e., Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba. These, when compared with the available experimental results, show good agreement.

van der Waals coefficients of the multi-layered MoS$_2$ with alkali metals

The van der Waals coefficients and the separation dependent retardation functions of the interactions between the atomically thin films of the multi-layered transition metal molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) dichalcogenides with the alkali atoms are investigated. First, we determine the frequency-dependent dielectric permittivity and intrinsic carrier density values for different layers of MoS$_2$ by adopting various fitting models to the recently measured optical data reported by Yu and co-workers [Sci. Rep. {\bf 5}, 16996 (2015)] using spectroscopy ellipsometry. Then, dynamic electric dipole polarizabilities of the alkali atoms are evaluated very accurately by employing the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. We also demonstrate the explicit change in the above coefficients for different number of layers. These studies are highly useful for the optoelectronics, sensing and storage applications using layered MoS$_2$.

Comparing magic wavelengths for the $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions of Cs using circularly and linearly polarized light

We demonstrate magic wavelengths, at which external electric field produces null differential Stark shifts, for the $6s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-6p ~ {^2}P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in the Cs atom due to circularly polarized light. In addition, we also obtain magic wavelengths using linearly polarized light, in order to verify the previously reported values, and make a comparative study with the values obtained for circularly polarized light. A number of these wavelengths are found to be in the optical region and could be of immense interest to experimentalists for carrying out high precision measurements. To obtain these wavelengths, we have calculated dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground, $6p ~{^2}P_{1/2}$ and $6p ~{^2}P_{3/2}$ states of Cs. We use the available precise values of the electric dipole (E1) matrix elements of the transitions that give the dominant contributions from the lifetime measurements of the excited states. Other significantly contributing E1 matrix elements are obtained by employing a relativistic coupled-cluster singles and doubles method. The accuracies of the dynamic polarizabilities are substantiated by comparing the static polarizability values with the corresponding experimental results.

Determination of magic wavelengths for the $7s ~ {^2}S_{1/2}-7p ~ {^2}P_{3/2,1/2}$ transitions in Fr atom

Magic wavelengthsfor the $7S_{1/2}-7P_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions in Fr were reported by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} in [Phys. Rev. A 93, 043407 (2016)]. These $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ were determined by plotting dynamic polarizabilities ($α$) of the involved states with the above transitions against a desired range of wavelength. Electric dipole (E1) matrix elements listed in [J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data 36, 497 (2007)], from the measured lifetimes of the $7P_{1/2,3/2}$ states and from the calculations considering core-polarization effects in the relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) method, were used to determine $α$. However, contributions from core correlation effects and from the E1 matrix elements of the $7P-7S$, $7P-8S$ and $7P-6D$ transitions to $α$ of the $7P$ states were ignored. In this work, we demonstrate importance of these contributions and improve accuracies of $α$ further by replacing the E1 matrix elements taken from the HFR method by the values obtained employing relativistic coupled-cluster theory. Our static $α$ are found to be in excellent agreement with the other available theoretical results; whereas substituting the E1 matrix elements used by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} give very small $α$ values for the $7P$ states. Owing to this, we find disagreement in $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ reported by Dammalapati \textit{et al.} for linearly polarized light; especially at wavelengths close to the D-lines and in the infrared region. As a consequence, a $λ_{\rm{magic}}$ reported at 797.75 nm which was seen supporting a blue detuned trap in their work is now estimated at 771.03 nm and is supporting a red detuned trap. Also, none of our results match with the earlier results for circularly polarized light. Moreover, our static values of $α$ will be very useful for guiding experiments to carry out their measurements.

Dispersion coefficients for the interaction of inert gas atoms with alkali and alkaline earth ions and alkali atoms with their singly ionized ions

We report the dispersion coefficients for the interacting inert gas atoms with the alkali ions, alkaline earth ions and alkali atoms with their singly charged ions. We use our relativistic coupled-cluster method to determine dynamic dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the alkali atoms and singly ionized alkaline earth atoms, whereas a relativistic random phase approximation approach has been adopted to evaluate these quantities for the closed-shell configured inert gas atoms and the singly and doubly ionized alkali and alkaline earth atoms, respectively. Accuracies of these results are adjudged from the comparison of their static polarizability values with their respective experimental results. These polarizabilities are further compared with the other theoretical results. Reason for the improvement in the accuracies of our estimated dispersion coefficients than the data listed in [At. Data and Nucl. Data Tables 101, 58 (2015)] are discussed. Results for some of the atom-ion interacting systems were not available earlier, these results and the other reported improved results will be very useful for the comprehensive understanding of the collisional physics involving these atom-atom and atom-ion interactions in the cold atom and atom-ion hybrid trapping experiments at the low-temperature regime.

Magnetic sublevel independent magic wavelengths: Application in the Rb and Cs atoms

A generic scheme to trap atoms at the magic wavelengths ($λ_{\rm{magic}}$s) that are independent of vector and tensor components of the interactions of the atoms with the external electric field is presented. The $λ_{\rm{magic}}$s for the laser cooling D2 lines in the Rb and Cs atoms are demonstrated and their corresponding polarizability values without vector and tensor contributions are given. Consequently, these $λ_{\rm{magic}}$s are independent of magnetic sublevels and hyperfine levels of the atomic states involved in the transition, thus, can offer unique approaches to carry out many high precision measurements with minimal systematics. Inevitably, the proposed technique can also be used for electronic or hyperfine transitions in other atomic systems.

Oscillation Frequencies for Simultaneous Trapping of Heteronuclear Alkali Atoms

We investigate oscillation frequencies for simultaneous trapping of more than one type of alkali atoms in a common optical lattice. For this purpose, we present numerical results for magic trapping conditions, where the oscillation frequencies for two different kind of alkali atoms using laser lights in the wavelength range 500-1200 nm are same. These wavelengths will be of immense interest for studying static and dynamic properties of boson-boson, boson-fermion, fermion-fermion, and boson-boson-boson mixtures involving different isotopes of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr alkali atoms. In addition to this, we were also able to locate a magic wavelength around 808.1 nm where all the three Li, K, and Rb atoms are found to be suitable for oscillating at the same frequency in a common optical trap.

Dispersion coefficients for the interaction of Cs atom with different material media

Largely motivated by a number of applications, the dispersion ($C_3$) coefficients for the interaction of a Cs atom with different material media such as Au (metal), Si (semiconductor) and various dielectric surfaces like SiO$_2$, SiN$_{\rm{x}}$, sapphire and YAG are determined using accurate values of the dynamic polarizabilities of the Cs atom obtained employing the relativistic coupled-cluster approach and the dynamic dielectric constants of the walls. Moreover, we also give the retardation coefficients in the graphical representation as functions of separation distances to describe the interaction potentials between the Cs atom with the above considered material media. For the easy access to the interaction potentials at a given distance of separation, we devise a simple working functional fitting form for the retarded coefficients in terms of two parameters that are quoted for each medium.

Dispersion coefficients for the interactions of the alkali and alkaline-earth ions and inert gas atoms with a graphene layer

Largely motivated by a number of applications, the van der Waals dispersion coefficients ($C_3$s) of the alkali ions (Li$^+$, Na$^+$, K$^+$ and Rb$^+$), the alkaline-earth ions (Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$) and the inert gas atoms (He, Ne, Ar and Kr) with a graphene layer are determined precisely within the framework of Dirac model. For these calculations, we have evaluated the dynamic polarizabilities of the above atomic systems very accurately by evaluating the transition matrix elements employing relativistic many-body methods and using the experimental values of the excitation energies. The dispersion coefficients are, finally, given as functions of the separation distance of an atomic system from the graphene layer and the ambiance temperature during the interactions. For easy extraction of these coefficients, we give a logistic fit to the functional forms of the dispersion coefficients in terms of the separation distances at the room temperature.

Magic wavelengths in the alkaline earth ions

We present magic wavelengths for the $nS$ - $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $nS$ - $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ transitions, with the respective ground and first excited $D$ states principal quantum numbers $n$ and $m$, in the Mg$^+$, Ca$^+$, Sr$^+$ and Ba$^+$ alkaline earth ions for linearly polarized lights by plotting dynamic polarizatbilities of the $nS$, $nP_{1/2,3/2}$ and $mD_{3/2,5/2}$ states of the ions. These dynamic polarizabilities are evaluated by employing a relativistic all-order perturbative method and their accuracies are ratified by comparing their static values with the available high precision experimental or other theoretical results. Moreover, some of the magic wavelengths identified by us in Ca$^+$ concurs with the recent measurements reported in [{\bf Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 223001 (2015)}]. Knowledge of these magic wavelengths are propitious to carry out many proposed high precision measurements trapping the above ions in the electric fields with the corresponding frequencies.

Wave packet construction in three-dimensional quantum billiards: Visualizing the closed orbit, collapse and revival of wave packets in the cubical billiard

We examine the dynamical evolution of wave packets in a cubical billiard where three quantum numbers ($n_x,n_y,n_z$) determine its energy spectrum and consequently its dynamical behavior. We have constructed the wave packet in the cubical billiard and have observed its time evolution for various closed orbits. The closed orbits are possible for certain specific values of quantum numbers ($n_x,n_y,n_z$) and initial momenta ($k_x,k_y,k_z$). We observe that a cubical billiard exhibits degenerate energy levels and the path lengths of the closed orbits for these degenerate energy levels are identical. In spite of the identical path lengths, the shapes of the closed orbits for degenerate levels are different and depend upon angles $θ$ and $ϕ$ which we term as the sweep and the elevation angle respectively. These degenerate levels owe their origin to the symmetries prevailing in the cubical billiard and degenerate levels disappear completely or partially for a parallelepiped billiard as the symmetry breaks due to commensurate or incommensurate ratio of sides.

Emending thermal dispersion interactions of Li, Na, K and Rb alkali metal-atoms with graphene in the Dirac model

Using accurate dynamic polarizabilities of Li, Na, K and, Rb atoms, we scrutinize the thermal Casimir-Polder interactions of these atoms with a single layered graphene. Considering the modified Lifshitz theory for material interactions, we reanalyze the dispersion coefficients ($C_3$s) of the above atoms with graphene as functions of separation distance, gap parameter and temperature among which some of them were earlier studied by estimating dynamic polarizabilities of the above atoms from the single oscillator model approximation. All these $C_3$ coefficients have been evaluated in the framework of the Dirac model. The interactions are described for a wide range of distances and temperatures to demonstrate the changes in behavior with the varying conditions of the system and also sensitivities in the interactions are analyzed by calculating them for different values of the gap parameter. From these analyses, we find a suitable value of the gap parameter for which the true nature of the interactions in graphene can be surmised more accurately.

Long-range interactions between the alkali-metal atoms and alkaline earth ions

Accurate knowledge of interaction potentials among the alkali atoms and alkaline earth ions is very useful in the studies of cold atom physics. Here we carry out theoretical studies of the long-range interactions among the Li, Na, K, and Rb alkali atoms with the Ca$^+$, Ba$^+$, Sr$^+$, and Ra$^+$ alkaline earth ions systematically which are largely motivated by their importance in a number of applications. These interactions are expressed as a power series in the inverse of the internuclear separation $R$. Both the dispersion and induction components of these interactions are determined accurately from the algebraic coefficients corresponding to each power combination in the series. Ultimately, these coefficients are expressed in terms of the electric multipole polarizabilities of the above mentioned systems which are calculated using the matrix elements obtained from a relativistic coupled-cluster method and core contributions to these quantities from the random phase approximation. We also compare our estimated polarizabilities with the other available theoretical and experimental results to verify accuracies in our calculations. In addition, we also evaluate the lifetimes of the first two low-lying states of the ions using the above matrix elements. Graphical representation of the interaction potentials versus $R$ are given among all the considered atoms and ions.

Systematic Shifts for Ytterbium-ion Optical Frequency Standards

The projected systematic uncertainties of single trapped Ytterbium-ion optical frequency standards are estimated for the quadrupole and octupole transitions which are at wavelengths 435.5 nm and 467 nm, respectively. Finite temperature of the ion and its interaction with the external fields introduce drift in the measured frequency compared to its absolute value. Frequency shifts due to electric quadrupole moment, induced polarization and excess micromotion of the ion depend on electric fields, which are estimated in this article. Geometry of the trap electrodes also result in unwanted electric fields which have been considered in our calculation. Magnetic field induced shift and Stark shifts due to electro-magnetic radiation at a surrounding temperature are also estimated. At CSIR-NPL, we are developing a frequency standard based on the octupole transition for which the systematic uncertainties are an order of magnitude smaller than that using the quadrupole transition, as described here.

Dispersion C3 coefficients for the alkali-metal atoms interacting with a graphene layer and with a carbon nanotube

We evaluate separation dependent van der Waal dispersion ($C_3$) coefficients for the interactions of the Li, Na, K and Rb alkali atoms with a graphene layer and with a single walled carbon nanotube (CNT) using the hydrodynamic and Dirac models. The results from both the models are evaluated using accurate values of the dynamic polarizabilities of the above atoms. Accountability of these accurate values of dynamical polarizabilities of the alkali atoms in determination of the above $C_3$ coefficients are accentuated by comparing them with the coefficients evaluated using the dynamic dipole polarizabilities estimated from the single oscillator approximation which are typically employed in the earlier calculations. For practical description of the atom-surface interaction potentials the radial dependent $C_3$ coefficients are given for a wide range of separation distances between the ground states of the considered atoms and the wall surfaces and also for different values of nanotube radii. The coefficients for the graphene layer are fit to a logistic function dependent on the separation distance. For CNT, we have carried out a paraboloid kind of fit dependent on both the separation distances and radii of the CNT. These fitted functions, with the list of fitting parameters, can be used to extrapolate the interaction potentials between the considered alkali atoms and the graphene layer or CNT surface conveniently at the given level of accuracy.

Van der Waals Coefficients for the Alkali-metal Atoms in the Material Mediums

The damping coefficients for the alkali atoms are determined very accurately by taking into account the optical properties of the atoms and three distinct types of trapping materials such as Au (metal), Si (semi-conductor) and vitreous SiO2 (dielectric). Dynamic dipole polarizabilities are calculated precisely for the alkali atoms that reproduce the damping coefficients in the perfect conducting medium within 0.2% accuracy. Upon the consideration of the available optical data of the above wall materials, the damping coefficients are found to be substantially different than those of the ideal conductor. We also evaluated dispersion coefficients for the alkali dimers and compared them with the previously reported values. These coefficients are fitted into a ready-to-use functional form to aid the experimentalists the interaction potentials only with the knowledge of distances.

State-insensitive trapping of Rb atoms: linearly versus circularly polarized lights

We study the cancellation of differential ac Stark shifts in the 5s and 5p states of rubidium atom using the linearly and circularly polarized lights by calculating their dynamic polarizabilities. Matrix elements were calculated using a relativistic coupled-cluster method at the single, double and important valence triple excitations approximation including all possible non-linear correlation terms. Some of the important matrix elements were further optimized using the experimental results available for the lifetimes and static polarizabilities of atomic states. "Magic wavelengths" are determined from the differential Stark shifts and results for the linearly polarized light are compared with the previously available results. Possible scope of facilitating state-insensitive optical trapping schemes using the magic wavelengths for circularly polarized light are discussed. Using the optimized matrix elements, the lifetimes of the 4d and 6s states of this atom are ameliorated.

Magic-zero wavelengths of alkali-metal atoms and their applications

Using first-principles calculations, we identify "magic-zero" optical wavelengths, λ_zero, for which the ground-state frequency-dependent polarizabilities of alkali-metal atoms vanish. Our approach uses high-precision, relativistic all-order methods in which all single, double, and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave functions are included to all orders of perturbation theory. We discuss the use of magic-zero wavelengths for sympathetic cooling in two-species mixtures of alkalis with group-II and other elements of interest. Special cases in which these wavelengths coincide with strong resonance transitions in a target system are identified.

Multipolar Black Body Radiation Shifts for the Single Ion Clocks

Appraising the projected $10^{-18}$ fractional uncertainty in the optical frequency standards using singly ionized ions, we estimate the black-body radiation (BBR) shifts due to the magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) multipoles of the magnetic and electric fields, respectively. Multipolar scalar polarizabilities are determined for the singly ionized calcium (Ca$^+$) and strontium (Sr$^+$) ions using the relativistic coupled-cluster method; though the theory can be exercised for any single ion clock proposal. The expected energy shifts for the respective clock transitions are estimated to be $4.38(3) \times 10^{-4}$ Hz for Ca$^+$ and $9.50(7) \times 10^{-5}$ Hz for Sr$^+$. These shifts are large enough and may be prerequisite for the frequency standards to achieve the foreseen $10^{-18}$ precision goal.

State-insensitive bichromatic optical trapping

We propose a scheme for state-insensitive trapping of neutral atoms by using light with two independent wavelengths. In particular, we describe the use of trapping and control lasers to minimize the variance of the potential experienced by a trapped Rb atom in ground and excited states. We present calculated values of wavelength pairs for which the 5s and 5p_{3/2} levels have the same ac Stark shifts in the presence of two laser fields.

Blackbody-radiation shift in a 88Sr+ ion optical frequency standard

The blackbody radiation (BBR) shift of the 5s - 4d_{5/2} clock transition in 88Sr+ is calculated to be 0.250(9) Hz at room temperature, T=300K, using the relativistic all-order method where all single and double excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave function are included to all orders of perturbation theory. The BBR shift is a major component in the uncertainty budget of the optical frequency standard based on the 88Sr+ trapped ion. The scalar polarizabilities of the 5s and 4d_{5/2} levels, as well as the tensor polarizability of the 4d_{5/2} level, are presented together with the evaluation of their uncertainties. The lifetimes of the 4d_{3/2}, 4d_{5/2}, 5p_{1/2}, and 5p_{3/2} states are calculated and compared with experimental values.
