Portable ground stations for space-to-ground quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics to share unconditionally secure keys between distant users. Previous works based on the quantum science satellite "Micius" have initially demonstrated the feasibility of a global QKD network. However, the practical applications of space-based QKD still face many technical problems, such as the huge size and weight of ground stations required to receive quantum signals. Here, we report space-to-ground QKD demonstrations based on portable receiving ground stations. The weight of the portable ground station is less than 100 kg, the space required is less than 1 m$^{3}$ and the installation time requires no more than 12 hours, all of the weight, required space and deployment time are about two orders of magnitude lower than those for the previous systems. Moreover, the equipment is easy to handle and can be placed on the roof of buildings in a metropolis. Secure keys have been successfully generated from the "Micius" satellite to these portable ground stations at six different places in China, and an average final secure key length is around 50 kb can be obtained during one passage. Our results pave the way for, and greatly accelerate the practical application of, space-based QKD.

Josephson effect in spin-singlet superconductor/ferromagnetic insulator/spin-triplet superconductor junctions with helical $p$-wave states

We study the Josephson effect in spin-singlet superconductor/helical $p$-wave superconductor junctions with a ferromagnetic barrier using the quasiclassical Green function method. It is found that both $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current-phase relations always exist, irrespective of the gap symmetries in superconductors. The indispensable condition for the $\sinϕ$-type and $\cosϕ$-type current is that the magnetization must have a component parallel to the crystallographic $a$ or $b$ axis, which is distinct from the case of $p$-wave superconductor described by a $\vect{d}$-vector with a uniform direction. The relation between the condition and the symmetries of the gap functions is analysed. We investigate in detail the symmetries and the sign reversal of the Josephson current when the magnetization is rotated.

Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in noncentrosymmetric superconductor Y$_2$C$_3$

For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as Y$_2$C$_3$, we consider a parity-mixing model composed of spin-singlet s-wave and spin-triplet f-wave pairing components. The $d$-vector in f-wave state is chosen to be parallel to the Dresselhaus asymmetric spin-orbit coupling vector. It is found that, the quasiparticle excitation spectrum exhibits distinct nodal structure as a consequence of parity-mixing. Our calculation predict anomalous noninteger power laws for low-temperature nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_{1}^{-1}$. We demonstrate particularly that such a model can qualitatively account for the existing experimental results of the temperature dependence of $T_{1}^{-1}$ in Y$_2$C$_3$.

Tunable ground states in helical $p$-wave Josephson junctions

We study new types of Josephson junctions composed of helical $p$-wave superconductors with $k_{x}\hat{x}\pm k_{y}\hat{y}$ and $k_{y}\hat{x}\pm k_{x}\hat{y}$-pairing symmetries using quasiclassical Green's functions with the generalized Riccati parametrization. The junctions can host rich ground states: $π$ phase, $0+π$ phase, $φ_{0}$ phase and $φ$ phase. The phase transition can be tuned by rotating the magnetization in the ferromagnetic interface. We present the phase diagrams in the parameter space formed by the orientation of the magnetization or by the magnitude of the interfacial potentials. The selection rules for the lowest order current which are responsible for the formation of the rich phases are summarized from the current-phase relations based on the numerical calculation. We construct a Ginzburg-Landau type of free energy for the junctions with ${\bf{d}}$-vectors and the magnetization, which not only reveals the interaction forms of spin-triplet superconductivity and ferromagnetism but also can directly leads to the selection rules. In addition, the energies of the Andreev bound states and the novel symmetries in the current-phase relations are also investigated. Our results are helpful both in the prediction of the novel Josephson phases and in the design of the quantum circuits.

Effect of Spin-Flip Scattering on Electrical Transport in Magnetic Tunnel Junctions

By means of the nonequilibrium Green function technique, the effect of spin-flip scatterings on the spin-dependent electrical transport in ferromagnet-insulator-ferromagnet (FM-I-FM) tunnel junctions is investigated. It is shown that Julliere's formula for the tunnel conductance must be modified when including the contribution from the spin-flip scatterings. It is found that the spin-flip scatterings could lead to an angular shift of the tunnel conductance, giving rise to the junction resistance not being the largest when the orientations of magnetizations in the two FM electrodes are antiparallel, which may offer an alternative explanation for such a phenomenon observed previously in experiments in some FM-I-FM junctions. The spin-flip assisted tunneling is also observed.
