Equipartition of Entanglement in Quantum Hall States

We study the full counting statistics (FCS) and symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies of integer and fractional quantum Hall states. For the filled lowest Landau level of spin-polarized electrons on an infinite cylinder, we compute exactly the charged moments associated with a cut orthogonal to the cylinder's axis. This yields the behavior of FCS and entropies in the limit of large perimeters: in a suitable range of fluctuations, FCS is Gaussian and entanglement spreads evenly among different charge sectors. Subleading charge-dependent corrections to equipartition are also derived. We then extend the analysis to Laughlin wavefunctions, where entanglement spectroscopy is carried out assuming the Li-Haldane conjecture. The results confirm equipartition up to small charge-dependent terms, and are then matched with numerical computations based on exact matrix product states.

Second Rényi entropy and annulus partition function for one-dimensional quantum critical systems with boundaries

We consider the entanglement entropy in critical one-dimensional quantum systems with open boundary conditions. We show that the second Rényi entropy of an interval away from the boundary can be computed exactly, provided the same conformal boundary condition is applied on both sides. The result involves the annulus partition function. We compare our exact result with numerical computations for the critical quantum Ising chain with open boundary conditions. We find excellent agreement, and we analyse in detail the finite-size corrections, which are known to be much larger than for a periodic system.

Cornering the universal shape of fluctuations

Understanding the fluctuations of observables is one of the main goals in science, be it theoretical or experimental, quantum or classical. We investigate such fluctuations when only a subregion of the full system can be observed, focusing on geometries with sharp corners. We report that the dependence on the opening angle is super-universal: up to a numerical prefactor, this function does not depend on anything, provided the system under study is uniform, isotropic, and correlations do not decay too slowly. The prefactor contains important physical information: we show in particular that it gives access to the long-wavelength limit of the structure factor. We illustrate our findings with several examples, including fractional quantum Hall states, scale invariant quantum critical theories, and metals. Finally, we discuss connections with quantum entanglement, extensions to three dimensions, as well as experiments to probe the geometry of fluctuations.

Finite-size corrections in critical symmetry-resolved entanglement

In the presence of a conserved quantity, symmetry-resolved entanglement entropies are a refinement of the usual notion of entanglement entropy of a subsystem. For critical 1d quantum systems, it was recently shown in various contexts that these quantities generally obey entropy equipartition in the scaling limit, i.e. they become independent of the symmetry sector. In this paper, we examine the finite-size corrections to the entropy equipartition phenomenon, and show that the nature of the symmetry group plays a crucial role. In the case of a discrete symmetry group, the corrections decay algebraically with system size, with exponents related to the operators' scaling dimensions. In contrast, in the case of a U(1) symmetry group, the corrections only decay logarithmically with system size, with model-dependent prefactors. We show that the determination of these prefactors boils down to the computation of twisted overlaps.

Microscopic Study of the Coupled-Wire Construction and Plausible Realization in Spin-Dependent Optical Lattices

Coupled-wire constructions offer particularly simple and powerful models to capture the essence of strongly correlated topological phases of matter. They often rely on effective theories valid in the low-energy and strong coupling limits, which impose severe constraints on the physical systems where they could be realized. We investigate the microscopic relevance of a class of coupled-wire models and their possible experimental realization in cold-atom experiments. We connect with earlier results and prove the emergence of fractional quantum Hall states in the limit of strong inter-wire tunneling. Contrary to previous studies relying on renormalization group arguments, our microscopic approach exposes the connection between coupled-wire constructions and model wavefunctions in continuum Landau levels. Then, we use exact diagonalization methods to investigate the appearance of these fractional quantum Hall states in more realistic settings. We examine the parameter regimes where these strongly correlated phases arise, and provide a way to detect their appearance in cold-atom experiments through standard time-of-flight measurements. Motivated by this experimental probe, we finally propose a realization of our model with cold-atom in spin-dependent optical lattices. Our estimates show that the previous fractional quantum Hall phases lie within experimentally accessible parameter regimes, giving a viable route towards their experimental study.

Entanglement spectroscopy of chiral edge modes in the Quantum Hall effect

We investigate the entanglement entropy in the Integer Quantum Hall effect in the presence of an edge, performing an exact calculation directly from the microscopic two-dimensional wavefunction. The edge contribution is shown to coincide exactly with that of a chiral Dirac fermion, and this correspondence holds for an arbitrary collection of intervals. In particular for a single interval the celebrated conformal formula is recovered with left and right central charges $c+\bar{c} =1$. Using Monte-Carlo techniques we establish that this behavior persists for strongly interacting systems such as Laughlin liquids. This illustrates how entanglement entropy is not only capable of detecting the presence of massless degrees of freedom, but also of pinpointing their position in real space, as well as elucidating their nature.

Correlation functions with fusion-channel multiplicity in W3 Toda field theory

Current studies of WN Toda field theory focus on correlation functions such that the WN highest-weight representations in the fusion channels are multiplicity-free. In this work, we study W3 Toda 4-point functions with multiplicity in the fusion channel. The conformal blocks of these 4-point functions involve matrix elements of a fully-degenerate primary field with a highest-weight in the adjoint representation of sl3, and a semi-degenerate primary field with a highest-weight in the fundamental representation of sl3. We show that, when the fusion rules are obeyed, the matrix elements of the fully-degenerate adjoint field, between two arbitrary descendant states, can be computed explicitly, on equal footing with the matrix elements of the semi-degenerate fundamental field. Using null-state conditions, we obtain a fourth-order Fuchsian differential equation for the conformal blocks. Using Okubo theory, we show that, due to the presence of multiplicities, this differential equation belongs to a class of Fuchsian equations that is different from those that have appeared so far in WN theories. We solve this equation, compute its monodromy group, and construct the monodromy-invariant correlation functions.

Correlation functions in loop models

In this paper we provide a step towards the understanding of the O($n$) bulk operator algebra. By using a mixture of analytical and numerical methods, we compute (ratios of) structure constants, and analyse the logarithmic structure of the transfer matrix. We believe that the O($n$) model for a generic value of $n = q + q^{-1}$ (i.e. for $q$ not a root of unity) provides a toy model of a bulk logarithmic CFT that is considerably simpler than its counterparts at $q$ a root of unity.

Conformal blocks in Virasoro and W theories: duality and the Calogero-Sutherland model

We study the properties of the conformal blocks of the conformal field theories with Virasoro or W-extended symmetry. When the conformal blocks contain only second-order degenerate fields, the conformal blocks obey second order differential equations and they can be interpreted as ground-state wave functions of a trigonometric Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian with non-trivial braiding properties. A generalized duality property relates the two types of second order degenerate fields. By studying this duality we found that the excited states of the Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian are characterized by two partitions, or in the case of WA_{k-1} theories by k partitions. By extending the conformal field theories under consideration by a u(1) field, we find that we can put in correspondence the states in the Hilbert state of the extended CFT with the excited non-polynomial eigenstates of the Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian. When the action of the Calogero-Sutherland integrals of motion is translated on the Hilbert space, they become identical to the integrals of motion recently discovered by Alba, Fateev, Litvinov and Tarnopolsky in Liouville theory in the context of the AGT conjecture. Upon bosonisation, these integrals of motion can be expressed as a sum of two, or in general k, bosonic Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian coupled by an interaction term with a triangular structure. For special values of the coupling constant, the conformal blocks can be expressed in terms of Jack polynomials with pairing properties, and they give electron wave functions for special Fractional Quantum Hall states

Particles in non-Abelian gauge potentials - Landau problem and insertion of non-Abelian flux

We study charged spin-1/2 particles in two dimensions, subject to a perpendicular non-Abelian magnetic field. Specializing to a choice of vector potential that is spatially constant but non-Abelian, we investigate the Landau level spectrum in planar and spherical geometry, paying particular attention to the role of the total angular momentum J = L +S. After this we show that the adiabatic insertion of non-Abelian flux in a spin-polarized quantum Hall state leads to the formation of charged spin-textures, which in the simplest cases can be identified with quantum Hall Skyrmions.

Spin-Singlet Quantum Hall States and Jack Polynomials with a Prescribed Symmetry

We show that a large class of bosonic spin-singlet Fractional Quantum Hall model wave-functions and their quasi-hole excitations can be written in terms of Jack polynomials with a prescribed symmetry. Our approach describes new spin-singlet quantum Hall states at filling fraction nu = 2k/(2r-1) and generalizes the (k,r) spin-polarized Jack polynomial states. The NASS and Halperin spin singlet states emerge as specific cases of our construction. The polynomials express many-body states which contain configurations obtained from a root partition through a generalized squeezing procedure involving spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The corresponding generalized Pauli principle for root partitions is obtained, allowing for counting of the quasihole states. We also extract the central charge and quasihole scaling dimension, and propose a conjecture for the underlying CFT of the (k, r) spin-singlet Jack states.

Decomposition of fractional quantum Hall states: New symmetries and approximations

We provide a detailed description of a new symmetry structure of the monomial (Slater) expansion coefficients of bosonic (fermionic) fractional quantum Hall states first obtained in Ref. 1, which we now extend to spin-singlet states. We show that the Haldane-Rezayi spin-singlet state can be obtained without exact diagonalization through a differential equation method that we conjecture to be generic to other FQH model states. The symmetry rules in Ref. 1 as well as the ones we obtain for the spin singlet states allow us to build approximations of FQH states that exhibit increasing overlap with the exact state (as a function of system size). We show that these overlaps reach unity in the thermodynamic limit even though our approximation omits more than half of the Hilbert space. We show that the product rule is valid for any FQH state which can be written as an expectation value of parafermionic operators.

Electron-Quasihole Duality and Second Order Differential Equation for Read-Rezayi and Jacks Wavefunctions

We consider the quasihole wavefunctions of the non-abelian Read-Rezayi quantum Hall states which are given by the conformal blocks of the minimal model WA_{k-1}(k+1,k+2) of the WA_{k-1} algebra. By studying the degenerate representations of this conformal field theories, we derive a second order differential equation satisfied by a general many-quasihole wavefunction. We find a duality between the differential equations fixing the electron and quasihole wavefunctions. They both satisfy the Laplace-Beltrami equation. We use this equation to obtain an analytic expression for the generic wavefunction with one excess flux. These results also apply to the more general models WA_{k-1}(k+1,k+r) corresponding to the recently introduced Jack states.

Clustering properties, Jack polynomials and unitary conformal field theories

Recently, Jack polynomials have been proposed as natural generalizations of Z_k Read-Rezayi states describing non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall systems. These polynomials are conjectured to be related to correlation functions of a class of W-conformal field theories based on the Lie algebra A_{k-1}. These theories can be considered as non-unitary solutions of a more general series of CFTs with Z_k symmetry, the parafermionic theories. Starting from the observation that some parafermionic theories admit unitary solutions as well, we show, by computing the corresponding correlation functions, that these theories provide trial wavefunctions which satisfy the same clustering properties as the non-unitary ones. We show explicitly that, although the wavefunctions constructed by unitary CFTs cannot be expressed as a single Jack polynomial, they still show a fine structure where the mathematical properties of the Jack polynomials play a major role.
