Non-equilibrium large deviations and parabolic-hyperbolic PDE with irregular drift

Large deviations of conservative interacting particle systems, such as the zero range process, about their hydrodynamic limit and their respective rate functions lead to the analysis of the skeleton equation; a degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic PDE with irregular drift. We develop a robust well-posedness theory for such PDEs in energy-critical spaces based on concepts of renormalized solutions and the equation's kinetic form. We establish these properties by proving that renormalized solutions are equivalent to classical weak solutions, extending concepts of [DiPerna, Lions; Ann. Math., 1989], [Ambrosio; Invent. Math., 2004] to the nonlinear setting. The relevance of the results toward large deviations in interacting particle systems is demonstrated by applications to the identification of l.s.c. envelopes of restricted rate functions, to zero noise large deviations for conservative (singular) SPDE, and to the $Γ$-convergence of rate functions. The first of these solves a long-standing open problem in the large deviations for zero range processes. The second makes rigorous an informal link between the non-equilibrium statistical mechanics approaches of macroscopic fluctuation theory and fluctuating hydrodynamics.

Thermodynamically consistent and positivity-preserving discretization of the thin-film equation with thermal noise

In micro-fluidics not only does capillarity dominate but also thermal fluctuations become important. On the level of the lubrication approximation, this leads to a quasi-linear fourth-order parabolic equation for the film height $h$ driven by space-time white noise. The gradient flow structure of its deterministic counterpart, the thin-film equation, which encodes the balance between driving capillary and limiting viscous forces, provides the guidance for the thermodynamically consistent introduction of fluctuations. We follow this route on the level of a spatial discretization of the gradient flow structure. Starting from an energetically conformal finite-element (FE) discretization, we point out that the numerical mobility function introduced by Grün and Rumpf can be interpreted as a discretization of the metric tensor in the sense of a mixed FE method with lumping. While this discretization was devised in order to preserve the so-called entropy estimate, we use this to show that the resulting high-dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) preserves pathwise and pointwise strict positivity, at least in case of the physically relevant mobility function arising from the no-slip boundary condition. As a consequence, this discretization gives rise to a consistent invariant measure, namely a discretization of the Brownian excursion (up to the volume constraint), and thus features an entropic repulsion. The price to pay over more naive discretizations is that when writing the SDE in Itô's form, which is the basis for the Euler-Mayurama time discretization, a correction term appears. To conclude, we perform various numerical experiments to compare the behavior of our discretization to that of the more naive finite difference discretization of the equation.

Non-negative Martingale Solutions to the Stochastic Thin-Film Equation with Nonlinear Gradient Noise

We prove the existence of nonnegative martingale solutions to a class of stochastic degenerate-parabolic fourth-order PDEs arising in surface-tension driven thin-film flow influenced by thermal noise. The construction applies to a range of mobilites including the cubic one which occurs under the assumption of a no-slip condition at the liquid-solid interface. Since their introduction more than 15 years ago, by Davidovitch, Moro, and Stone and by Grün, Mecke, and Rauscher, the existence of solutions to stochastic thin-film equations for cubic mobilities has been an open problem, even in the case of sufficiently regular noise. Our proof of global-in-time solutions relies on a careful combination of entropy and energy estimates in conjunction with a tailor-made approximation procedure to control the formation of shocks caused by the nonlinear stochastic scalar conservation law structure of the noise.

Density bounds for solutions to differential equations driven by Gaussian rough paths

We consider finite dimensional rough differential equations driven by centered Gaussian processes. Combining Malliavin calculus, rough paths techniques and interpolation inequalities, we establish upper bounds on the density of the corresponding solution for any fixed time $t>0$. In addition, we provide Varadhan estimates for the asymptotic behavior of the density for small noise. The emphasis is on working with general Gaussian processes with covariance function satisfying suitable abstract, checkable conditions.

Stochastic continuity equations with conservative noise

The present article is devoted to well-posedness by noise for the continuity equation. Namely, we consider the continuity equation with non-linear and partially degenerate stochastic perturbations in divergence form. We prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions under hypotheses on the velocity field which are weaker than those required in the deterministic setting. This extends related results of [Flandoli, Gubinelli, Priola; Invent. Math., 2010] applicable for linear multiplicative noise to a non-linear setting. The existence proof relies on a duality argument which makes use of the regularity theory for fully non-linear parabolic equations.

Stochastic non-isotropic degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations

We introduce the notion of pathwise entropy solutions for a class of degenerate parabolic-hyperbolic equations with non-isotropic nonlinearity and fluxes with rough time dependence and prove their well-posedness. In the case of Brownian noise and periodic boundary conditions, we prove that the pathwise entropy solutions converge to their spatial average and provide an estimate on the rate of convergence. The third main result of the paper is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata. This work extends both the framework of pathwise entropy solutions for stochastic scalar conservation laws introduced by Lions, Perthame and Souganidis and the analysis of the long time behavior of stochastic scalar conservation laws by the authors to a new class of equations.

The stochastic thin-film equation: existence of nonnegative martingale solutions

We consider the stochastic thin-film equation with colored Gaussian Stratonovich noise in one space dimension and establish the existence of nonnegative weak (martingale) solutions. The construction is based on a Trotter-Kato-type decomposition into a deterministic and a stochastic evolution, which yields an easy to implement numerical algorithm. Compared to previous work, no interface potential has to be included, the initial data and the solution can have de-wetted regions of positive measure, and the Trotter-Kato scheme allows for a simpler proof of existence than in case of Itô noise.

Random attractors for locally monotone stochastic partial differential equations

We prove the existence of random dynamical systems and random attractors for a large class of locally monotone stochastic partial differential equations perturbed by additive Lévy noise. The main result is applicable to various types of SPDE such as stochastic Burgers type equations, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations, the stochastic 3D Leray-$α$ model, stochastic power law fluids, the stochastic Ladyzhenskaya model, stochastic Cahn-Hilliard type equations, stochastic Kuramoto-Sivashinsky type equations, stochastic porous media equations and stochastic $p$-Laplace equations.

Ergodicity and local limits for stochastic local and nonlocal p-Laplace equations

Ergodicity for local and nonlocal stochastic singular $p$-Laplace equations is proven, without restriction on the spatial dimension and for all $p\in[1,2)$. This generalizes previous results from [Gess, Tölle; J. Math. Pures Appl., 2014], [Liu, Tölle; Electron. Commun. Probab., 2011], [Liu; J. Evol. Equations, 2009]. In particular, the results include the multivalued case of the stochastic (nonlocal) total variation flow, which solves an open problem raised in [Barbu, Da Prato, Röckner; SIAM J. Math. Anal., 2009]. Moreover, under appropriate rescaling, the convergence of the unique invariant measure for the nonlocal stochastic $p$-Laplace equation to the unique invariant measure of the local stochastic $p$-Laplace equation is proven.

Long-time behavior, invariant measures and regularizing effects for stochastic scalar conservation laws

We study the long-time behavior and the regularity of pathwise entropy solutions to stochastic scalar conservation laws with random in time spatially homogeneous fluxes and periodic initial data. We prove that the solutions converge to their spatial average, which is the unique invariant measure, and provide a rate of convergence, the latter being new even in the deterministic case for dimensions higher than two. The main tool is a new regularization result in the spirit of averaging lemmata for scalar conservation laws, which, in particular, implies a regularization by noise-type result for pathwise quasi-solutions.

Synchronization by noise

We provide sufficient conditions for synchronization by noise, i.e. under these conditions we prove that weak random attractors for random dynamical systems consist of single random points. In the case of SDE with additive noise, these conditions are also essentially necessary. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a minimal weak point random attractor consisting of a single random point. As a result, synchronization by noise is proven for a large class of SDE with additive noise. In particular, we prove that the random attractor for an SDE with drift given by a (multidimensional) double-well potential and additive noise consists of a single random point. All examples treated in [Tearne, PTRF; 2008] are also included.

Synchronization by noise for order-preserving random dynamical systems

We provide sufficient conditions for weak synchronization by noise for order-preserving random dynamical systems on Polish spaces. That is, under these conditions we prove the existence of a weak point attractor consisting of a single random point. This generalizes previous results in two directions: First, we do not restrict to Banach spaces and second, we do not require the partial order to be admissible nor normal. As a second main result and application we prove weak synchronization by noise for stochastic porous media equations with additive noise.

The Jain-Monrad criterion for rough paths and applications to random Fourier series and non-Markovian Hörmander theory

We discuss stochastic calculus for large classes of Gaussian processes, based on rough path analysis. Our key condition is a covariance measure structure combined with a classical criterion due to Jain and Monrad [Ann. Probab. 11 (1983) 46-57]. This condition is verified in many examples, even in absence of explicit expressions for the covariance or Volterra kernels. Of special interest are random Fourier series, with covariance given as Fourier series itself, and we formulate conditions directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients. We also establish convergence and rates of convergence in rough path metrics of approximations to such random Fourier series. An application to SPDE is given. Our criterion also leads to an embedding result for Cameron-Martin paths and complementary Young regularity (CYR) of the Cameron-Martin space and Gaussian sample paths. CYR is known to imply Malliavin regularity and also Itô-like probabilistic estimates for stochastic integrals (resp., stochastic differential equations) despite their (rough) pathwise construction. At last, we give an application in the context of non-Markovian Hörmander theory.

Semi-discretization for stochastic scalar conservation laws with multiple rough fluxes

We develop a semi-discretization approximation for scalar conservation laws with multiple rough time dependence in inhomogeneous fluxes. The method is based on Brenier's transport-collapse algorithm and uses characteristics defined in the setting of rough paths. We prove strong $L^1$-convergence for inhomogeneous fluxes and provide a rate of convergence for homogeneous one's. The approximation scheme as well as the proofs are based on the recently developed theory of pathwise entropy solutions and uses the kinetic formulation which allows to define globally the (rough) characteristics.

Singular-degenerate multivalued stochastic fast diffusion equations

We consider singular-degenerate, multivalued stochastic fast diffusion equations with multiplicative Lipschitz continuous noise. In particular, this includes the stochastic sign fast diffusion equation arising from the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model for self-organized criticality. A well-posedness framework based on stochastic variational inequalities (SVI) is developed, characterizing solutions to the stochastic sign fast diffusion equation, previously obtained in a limiting sense only. Aside from generalizing the SVI approach to stochastic fast diffusion equations we develop a new proof of well-posedness, applicable to general diffusion coefficients. In case of linear multiplicative noise, we prove the existence of (generalized) strong solutions, which entails higher regularity properties of solutions than previously known.

preprint2015arXiv

Stability of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations

We provide a general framework for the stability of solutions to stochastic partial differential equations with respect to perturbations of the drift. More precisely, we consider stochastic partial differential equations with drift given as the subdifferential of a convex function and prove continuous dependence of the solutions with regard to random Mosco convergence of the convex potentials. In particular, we identify the concept of stochastic variational inequalities (SVI) as a well-suited framework to study such stability properties. The generality of the developed framework is then laid out by deducing Trotter type and homogenization results for stochastic fast diffusion and stochastic singular p-Laplace equations. In addition, we provide an SVI treatment for stochastic nonlocal p-Laplace equations and prove their convergence to the respective local models.

Weak synchronization for isotropic flows

We study Brownian flows on manifolds for which the associated Markov process is strongly mixing with respect to an invariant probability measure and for which the distance process for each pair of trajectories is a diffusion $r$. We provide a sufficient condition on the boundary behavior of $r$ at $0$ which guarantees that the statistical equilibrium of the flow is almost surely a singleton and its support is a weak point attractor. The condition is fulfilled in the case of negative top Lyapunov exponent, but it is also fulfilled in some cases when the top Lyapunov exponent is zero. Particular examples are isotropic Brownian flows on $S^{d-1}$ as well as isotropic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck flows on $\mathbb{R}^d$.

Random attractors for stochastic porous media equations perturbed by space-time linear multiplicative noise

Unique existence of solutions to porous media equations driven by continuous linear multiplicative space-time rough signals is proven for initial data in $L^1(\mathcal {O})$ on bounded domains $\mathcal {O}$. The generation of a continuous, order-preserving random dynamical system on $L^1(\mathcal {O})$ and the existence of a random attractor for stochastic porous media equations perturbed by linear multiplicative noise in space and time is obtained. The random attractor is shown to be compact and attracting in $L^{\infty}(\mathcal {O})$ norm. Uniform $L^{\infty}$ bounds and uniform space-time continuity of the solutions is shown. General noise including fractional Brownian motion for all Hurst parameters is treated and a pathwise Wong-Zakai result for driving noise given by a continuous semimartingale is obtained. For fast diffusion equations driven by continuous linear multiplicative space-time rough signals, existence of solutions is proven for initial data in $L^{m+1}(\mathcal {O})$.

Scalar conservation laws with multiple rough fluxes

We study pathwise entropy solutions for scalar conservation laws with inhomogeneous fluxes and quasilinear multiplicative rough path dependence. This extends the previous work of Lions, Perthame and Souganidis who considered spatially independent and inhomogeneous fluxes with multiple paths and a single driving singular path respectively. The approach is motivated by the theory of stochastic viscosity solutions which relies on special test functions constructed by inverting locally the flow of the stochastic characteristics. For conservation laws this is best implemented at the level of the kinetic formulation which we follow here.

Stochastic scalar conservation laws driven by rough paths

We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic scalar conservation laws with joint space-time transport noise and affine-linear noise driven by a geometric p-rough path. In particular, stability of the solutions with respect to the driving rough path is obtained, leading to a robust approach to stochastic scalar conservation laws. As immediate corollaries we obtain support theorems, large deviation results and the generation of a random dynamical system.

Stochastic variational inequalities and regularity for degenerate stochastic partial differential equations

The regularity and characterization of solutions to degenerate, quasilinear SPDE is studied. Our results are two-fold: First, we prove regularity results for solutions to certain degenerate, quasilinear SPDE driven by Lipschitz continuous noise. In particular, this provides a characterization of solutions to such SPDE in terms of (generalized) strong solutions. Second, for the one-dimensional stochastic mean curvature flow with normal noise we adapt the notion of stochastic variational inequalities to provide a characterization of solutions previously obtained in a limiting sense only. This solves a problem left open in [Es-Sarhir, von Renesse; SIAM, 2012] and sharpens regularity properties obtained in [Es-Sarhir, von Renesse, Stannat; NoDEA, 2012].

Finite time extinction for stochastic sign fast diffusion and self-organized criticality

We prove finite time extinction for stochastic sign fast diffusion equations driven by linear multiplicative space-time noise, corresponding to the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld model for self-organized criticality. This solves a problem posed and left open in several works: [Barbu, Da Prato, Röckner, CMP, 2009], [Barbu, Da Prato, Röckner, CRMAS, 2009], [Barbu, Röckner, CMP, 2012], [Barbu, Da Prato, Röckner, JMAA, 2012], [Röckner, Wang, JMLS, 2013], [Barbu, MMAS, 2013]. The highly singular-degenerate nature of the drift in interplay with the stochastic perturbation causes the need for new methods in the analysis of mass diffusion and several new estimates and techniques are introduced.

Multi-valued, singular stochastic evolution inclusions

We provide an abstract variational existence and uniqueness result for multi-valued, monotone, non-coercive stochastic evolution inclusions in Hilbert spaces with general additive and Wiener multiplicative noise. As examples we discuss certain singular diffusion equations such as the stochastic 1-Laplacian evolution (total variation flow) in all space dimensions and the stochastic singular fast diffusion equation. In case of additive Wiener noise we prove the existence of a unique weak-* mean ergodic invariant measure.

On the Variational Regularity of Cameron-Martin paths

It is a well-known fact that finite rho-variation of the covariance (in 2D sense) of a general Gaussian process implies finite rho-variation of Cameron-Martin paths. In the special case of fractional Brownian motion (think: 2H=1/rho), in the rougher than Brownian regime, a sharper result holds thanks to a Besov-type embedding [Friz-Victoir, JFA, 2006]. In the present note we give a general result which closes this gap. We comment on the importance of this result for various applications.

Random attractors for degenerate stochastic partial differential equations

We prove the existence of random attractors for a large class of degenerate stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) perturbed by joint additive Wiener noise and real, linear multiplicative Brownian noise, assuming only the standard assumptions of the variational approach to SPDE with compact embeddings in the associated Gelfand triple. This allows spatially much rougher noise than in known results. The approach is based on a construction of strictly stationary solutions to related strongly monotone SPDE. Applications include stochastic generalized porous media equations, stochastic generalized degenerate p-Laplace equations and stochastic reaction diffusion equations. For perturbed, degenerate p-Laplace equations we prove that the deterministic, infinite dimensional attractor collapses to a single random point if enough noise is added.

Spatial rough path lifts of stochastic convolutions

We present sufficient conditions for finite controlled rho-variation of the covariance of Gaussian processes with stationary increments, based on concavity or convexity of their variance function. The motivation for this type of conditions comes from recent work of Hairer [CPAM,2011]. Our results allow to construct rough paths lifts of solutions to a class of fractional stochastic heat equations with additive, possibly colored Wiener noise with respect to their space variable.

Finite speed of propagation for stochastic porous media equations

We prove finite speed of propagation for stochastic porous media equations perturbed by linear multiplicative space-time rough signals. Explicit and optimal estimates for the speed of propagation are given. The result applies to any continuous driving signal, thus including fractional Brownian motion for all Hurst parameters. The explicit estimates are then used to prove that the corresponding random attractor has infinite fractal dimension.

preprint2011arXiv

Random attractors for a class of stochastic partial differential equations driven by general additive noise

The existence of random attractors for a large class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) driven by general additive noise is established. The main results are applied to various types of SPDE, as e.g. stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, the stochastic $p$-Laplace equation and stochastic porous media equations. Besides classical Brownian motion, we also include space-time fractional Brownian Motion and space-time Lévy noise as admissible random perturbations. Moreover, cases where the attractor consists of a single point are considered and bounds for the speed of attraction are obtained.

preprint2011arXiv

Random attractors for singular stochastic partial differential equations

The existence of random attractors for singular stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) perturbed by general additive noise is proven. The drift is assumed only to satisfy the standard assumptions of the variational approach to SPDE with compact embeddings in the Gelfand triple and singular coercivity. For ergodic, monotone, contractive random dynamical systems it is proven that the attractor consists of a single random point. In case of real, linear multiplicative noise finite time extinction is obtained. Applications include stochastic generalized fast diffusion equations and stochastic generalized singular p-Laplace equations perturbed by Levy noise with jump measure having finite first and second moments.

preprint2011arXiv

Strong Solutions for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations of Gradient Type

Unique existence of analytically strong solutions to stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) with drift given by the subdifferential of a quasi-convex function and with general multiplicative noise is proven. The proof applies a genuinely new method of weighted Galerkin approximations based on the "distance" defined by the quasi-convex function. Spatial regularization of the initial condition analogous to the deterministic case is obtained. The results yield a unified framework which is applied to stochastic generalized porous media equations, stochastic generalized reaction diffusion equations and stochastic generalized degenerated p-Laplace equations. In particular, higher regularity for solutions of such SPDE is obtained.
