Precise Laplace asymptotics for singular stochastic PDEs: The case of 2D gPAM

We implement a Laplace method for the renormalised solution to the generalised 2D Parabolic Anderson Model (gPAM) driven by a small spatial white noise. Our work rests upon Hairer's theory of regularity structures which allows to generalise classical ideas of Azencott and Ben Arous on path space as well as Aida and Inahama and Kawabi on rough path space to the space of models. The technical cornerstone of our argument is a Taylor expansion of the solution in the noise intensity parameter: We prove precise bounds for its terms and the remainder and use them to estimate asymptotically irrevelant terms to arbitrary order. While most of our arguments are not specific to gPAM, we also outline how to adapt those that are.

Forests, cumulants, martingales

This work is concerned with forest and cumulant type expansions of general random variables on a filtered probability spaces. We establish a "broken exponential martingale" expansion that generalizes and unifies the exponentiation result of Al{ò}s, Gatheral, and Radoičić and the cumulant recursion formula of Lacoin, Rhodes, and Vargas. Specifically, we exhibit the two previous results as lower dimensional projections of the same generalized forest expansion, subsequently related by forest reordering. Our approach also leads to sharp integrability conditions for validity of the cumulant formula, as required by many of our examples, including iterated stochastic integrals, Lévy area, Bessel processes, KPZ with smooth noise, Wiener-Itô chaos and "rough" stochastic (forward) variance models.

From rough path estimates to multilevel Monte Carlo

New classes of stochastic differential equations can now be studied using rough path theory (e.g. Lyons et al. [LCL07] or Friz--Hairer [FH14]). In this paper we investigate, from a numerical analysis point of view, stochastic differential equations driven by Gaussian noise in the aforementioned sense. Our focus lies on numerical implementations, and more specifically on the saving possible via multilevel methods. Our analysis relies on a subtle combination of pathwise estimates, Gaussian concentration, and multilevel ideas. Numerical examples are given which both illustrate and confirm our findings.

On the regularity of SLE trace

We revisit regularity of SLE trace, for all $κ\neq 8$, and establish Besov regularity under the usual half-space capacity parametrization. With an embedding theorem of Garsia--Rodemich--Rumsey type, we obtain finite moments (and hence almost surely) optimal variation regularity with index $\min (1 + κ/ 8, 2) $, improving on previous works of Werness, and also (optimal) Hölder regularity à la Johansson Viklund and Lawler.

The Jain-Monrad criterion for rough paths and applications to random Fourier series and non-Markovian Hörmander theory

We discuss stochastic calculus for large classes of Gaussian processes, based on rough path analysis. Our key condition is a covariance measure structure combined with a classical criterion due to Jain and Monrad [Ann. Probab. 11 (1983) 46-57]. This condition is verified in many examples, even in absence of explicit expressions for the covariance or Volterra kernels. Of special interest are random Fourier series, with covariance given as Fourier series itself, and we formulate conditions directly in terms of the Fourier coefficients. We also establish convergence and rates of convergence in rough path metrics of approximations to such random Fourier series. An application to SPDE is given. Our criterion also leads to an embedding result for Cameron-Martin paths and complementary Young regularity (CYR) of the Cameron-Martin space and Gaussian sample paths. CYR is known to imply Malliavin regularity and also Itô-like probabilistic estimates for stochastic integrals (resp., stochastic differential equations) despite their (rough) pathwise construction. At last, we give an application in the context of non-Markovian Hörmander theory.

On the existence of SLE trace: finite energy drivers and non-constant $κ$

Existence of Loewner trace is revisited. We identify finite energy paths (the "skeleton of Wiener measure") as natural class of regular drivers for which we find simple and natural estimates in terms of their (Cameron--Martin) norm. Secondly, now dealing with potentially rough drivers, a representation of the derivative of the (inverse of the) Loewner flow is given in terms of a rough- and then pathwise Föllmer integral. Assuming the driver within a class of Itô-processes, an exponential martingale argument implies existence of trace. In contrast to classical (exact) SLE computations, our arguments are well adapted to perturbations, such as non-constant $κ$ (assuming $<2$ for technical reasons) and additional finite-energy drift terms.

Stochastic scalar conservation laws driven by rough paths

We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to a class of stochastic scalar conservation laws with joint space-time transport noise and affine-linear noise driven by a geometric p-rough path. In particular, stability of the solutions with respect to the driving rough path is obtained, leading to a robust approach to stochastic scalar conservation laws. As immediate corollaries we obtain support theorems, large deviation results and the generation of a random dynamical system.

Cubature on Wiener space: pathwise convergence

Cubature on Wiener space [Lyons, T.; Victoir, N.; Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A 8 January 2004 vol. 460 no. 2041 169-198] provides a powerful alternative to Monte Carlo simulation for the integration of certain functionals on Wiener space. More specifically, and in the language of mathematical finance, cubature allows for fast computation of European option prices in generic diffusion models. We give a random walk interpretation of cubature and similar (e.g. the Ninomiya--Victoir) weak approximation schemes. By using rough path analysis, we are able to establish weak convergence for general path-dependent option prices.

How to make Dupire's local volatility work with jumps

There are several (mathematical) reasons why Dupire's formula fails in the non-diffusion setting. And yet, in practice, ad-hoc preconditioning of the option data works reasonably well. In this note we attempt to explain why. In particular, we propose a regularization procedure of the option data so that Dupire's local vol diffusion process recreates the correct option prices, even in manifest presence of jumps.

On the Variational Regularity of Cameron-Martin paths

It is a well-known fact that finite rho-variation of the covariance (in 2D sense) of a general Gaussian process implies finite rho-variation of Cameron-Martin paths. In the special case of fractional Brownian motion (think: 2H=1/rho), in the rougher than Brownian regime, a sharper result holds thanks to a Besov-type embedding [Friz-Victoir, JFA, 2006]. In the present note we give a general result which closes this gap. We comment on the importance of this result for various applications.

Spatial rough path lifts of stochastic convolutions

We present sufficient conditions for finite controlled rho-variation of the covariance of Gaussian processes with stationary increments, based on concavity or convexity of their variance function. The motivation for this type of conditions comes from recent work of Hairer [CPAM,2011]. Our results allow to construct rough paths lifts of solutions to a class of fractional stochastic heat equations with additive, possibly colored Wiener noise with respect to their space variable.

Parabolic comparison revisited and applications

We consider the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem $\partial_t u - F(t,x,u,Du,D^2 u) = 0 on (0,T)\times \R^n$ in viscosity sense. Comparison is established for bounded semi-continuous (sub-/super-)solutions under structural assumption (3.14) of the User's Guide plus a mild condition on $F$ such as to cope with the unbounded domain. Comparison on $(0,T]$, space-time regularity and existence are also discussed. Our analysis passes through an extension of the parabolic theorem of sums which appears to be useful in its own right.
