Retroformer: Pushing the Limits of Interpretable End-to-end Retrosynthesis Transformer

Retrosynthesis prediction is one of the fundamental challenges in organic synthesis. The task is to predict the reactants given a core product. With the advancement of machine learning, computer-aided synthesis planning has gained increasing interest. Numerous methods were proposed to solve this problem with different levels of dependency on additional chemical knowledge. In this paper, we propose Retroformer, a novel Transformer-based architecture for retrosynthesis prediction without relying on any cheminformatics tools for molecule editing. Via the proposed local attention head, the model can jointly encode the molecular sequence and graph, and efficiently exchange information between the local reactive region and the global reaction context. Retroformer reaches the new state-of-the-art accuracy for the end-to-end template-free retrosynthesis, and improves over many strong baselines on better molecule and reaction validity. In addition, its generative procedure is highly interpretable and controllable. Overall, Retroformer pushes the limits of the reaction reasoning ability of deep generative models.

Approximation properties for $p$-adic symplectic groups and lattices

Let $G$ be the symplectic group $Sp_4$ over a non Archimedean local field of any characteristic. It is proved in this paper that for $p\in[1,4/3)\cup (4,\infty]$ neither the group $G$ nor its lattices have the property of approximation by Schur multipliers on Schatten $p$ class ($AP_{pcb}^{Schur}$) of Lafforgue and de la Salle. As a consequence, for any lattice $Γ$ in $G,$ the associated non-commutative $L^p$ space $L^p(LΓ)$ of its von Neumann algebra $L(Γ)$ fails the operator space approximation property (OAP) and completely bounded approximation property (CBAP) for $p\in[1,4/3)\cup (4,\infty].$ Together with previous work [LdlS, HdL13a, HdL13b, dL], one can conclude that lattices in a higher rank algebraic group over any local field do not have the group approximation property (AP) of Haagerup and Kraus. It is also shown that on some lattice $Γ$ in $Sp_4$ over some local field, the constant function $1$ cannot be approximated by radial functions with bounded (not necessarily completely bounded) Fourier multiplier norms on $C^*_r(Γ)$, nor on $L^p(LΓ)$ for finite $p>4.$

About the difficulty to prove the Baum Connes conjecture without coefficient for a non-cocompact lattice in $Sp_4$ in a local field

We introduce property $(T_{Schur},G,K)$ and prove it for some non-cocompact lattice in $Sp_4$ in a local field of finite characteristic. We show that property $(T_{Schur},G,K)$ for a non-cocompact lattice $Γ$ in a higher rank almost simple algebraic group in a local field is an obstacle to proving the Baum Connes conjecture without coefficient for $Γ$ with known methods, and this is stronger than the well-known fact that $Γ$ does not have the property of rapid decay (property (RD)). It is the first example (as announced in [Laf10a]) for which all known methods for proving the Baum Connes conjecture without coefficient fail.

Strong Banach Property (T) for Simple Algebraic Groups of Higher Rank

In [Laf08], [Laf09], Vincent Lafforgue proved strong Banach property (T) for $SL_3$ over a non archimedean local field $F.$ In this paper, we extend his results to $Sp_4$ and therefore to any connected almost $F$-simple algebraic group with $F$-split rank $\geq 2.$ As applications, the family of expanders constructed from any lattice of such a group do not admit a uniform embedding into any Banach space of type $>1,$ and any isometric affine action of such a group, or its cocompact lattice, on a Banach space of type $>1$ has a fixed point.

Strong Banach property (T), after Vincent Lafforgue

This text takes, with more details and simplifying a proof in section 3, the parts of [Laf08] and [Laf09] treating p-adic groups. We prove that $SL_{3}$ over a non archimedian local field $F$ has strong Banach property (T). The applications are as follows: any connected almost $F$-simple algebraic group $G$ over $F$ whose Lie algebra contains $sl_3(F)$ has strong Banach property (T), the family of expanders constructed from a lattice of $G(F)$ do not embed uniformly in any Banach space of type $>1,$ and any isometric affine action of $G(F)$ on a Banach space of type $>1$ admits a fix point.
