Ab Initio Coupling of Jets to Collective Flow in the Opacity Expansion Approach

We calculate the leading corrections to jet momentum broadening and medium-induced branching that arise from the velocity of the moving medium at first order in opacity. These results advance our knowledge of jet quenching and demonstrate how it couples to collective flow of the quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions and to the orbital motion of partons in cold nuclear matter in deep inelastic scattering at the electron-ion collider. We also compute the leading corrections to jet momentum broadening due to transverse gradients of temperature and density. We find that these effects lead to both anisotropic transverse momentum diffusion proportional to the medium velocity and anisotropic medium-induced radiation emitted preferentially in the direction of the flow. We isolate the relevant sub-eikonal corrections by working with jets composed of scalar particles with arbitrary color factors interacting with the medium by scalar QCD. Appropriate substitution of the color factors and light-front wave functions allow us to immediately apply the results to a range of processes including $q \rightarrow q g$ branching in real QCD. The resulting general expressions can be directly coupled to hydrodynamic simulations on an event-by-event basis to study the correlations between jet quenching and the dynamics of various forms of nuclear matter.

Energy-Energy Correlators for Precision QCD

In this contribution to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021) we review recent progress in the evaluation and application of the Energy-Energy Correlator (EEC) event shape observable in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, hadronic collisions, and deep inelastic scattering. The importance of EEC as a precision probe of the perturbative and non perturbative aspects of QCD dynamics is emphasized. It can be used to extract the strong coupling constant and to constrain TMD distribution functions. Closely related energy-correlation shape variables have also been used to tag boosted objects produced in high energy collisions. The opportunities to study EEC at the future Electron-Ion Collider are also highlighted.

Heavy flavor jet production and substructure in electron-nucleus collisions

Deep inelastic scattering on nuclei at the Electron-Ion Collider will open new opportunities to investigate the structure of matter. Heavy flavor-tagged jets are complementary probes of the partonic composition and transport coefficients of large nuclei, but introduce a new mass scale that modifies the structure of parton showers and must be carefully accounted for in perturbative calculations. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluon interactions, we present the first calculation of inclusive charm-jet and bottom-jet cross sections in electron-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order and compare them to the reference electron-proton case. We also show predictions for the heavy flavor-tagged jet momentum sharing distributions to further clarify the correlated in-medium modification of jet substructure.

Jets in evolving matter within the opacity expansion approach

In a recent study [1] we have extended the opacity expansion approach to describe jet-medium interactions including medium motion effects in the context of heavy-ion collisions. We have computed color field of the in-medium sources, including the effects of the transverse field components and the energy transfer between the medium and jet. The corresponding contributions are sub-eikonal in nature, and were previously ignored in the literature. Here we discuss how our approach can be applied to describe the medium motion effects in the context of Deep Inelastic Scattering.

Nuclear matter effects on jet production at electron-ion colliders

In these proceedings we report recent progress on understanding hadron and jet production in electron-nucleus collisions at the future Electron-Ion Collider [1,2]. These processes will play an essential role in the exploration of the partonic structure of nuclei and the study of parton shower evolution in strongly-interacting matter. We employ the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, generalized to include in-medium interactions, to present the first theoretical results for inclusive hadron and jet cross sections, as well as the jet charge modification in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei. We further demonstrate how to separate initial-state and final-state effects.

A New Heavy Flavor Program for the Future Electron-Ion Collider

The proposed high-energy and high-luminosity Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) will provide one of the cleanest environments to precisely determine the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) in a wide $x$-$Q^{2}$ range. Heavy flavor production at the EIC provides access to nPDFs in the poorly constrained high Bjorken-$x$ region, allows us to study the quark and gluon fragmentation processes, and constrains parton energy loss in cold nuclear matter. Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are developing a new physics program to study heavy flavor production, flavor tagged jets, and heavy flavor hadron-jet correlations in the nucleon/nucleus going direction at the future EIC. The proposed measurements will provide a unique way to explore the flavor dependent fragmentation functions and energy loss in a heavy nucleus. They will constrain the initial-state effects that are critical for the interpretation of previous and ongoing heavy ion measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. We show an initial conceptual design of the proposed Forward Silicon Tracking (FST) detector at the EIC, which is essential to carry out the heavy flavor measurements. We further present initial feasibility studies/simulations of heavy flavor hadron reconstruction using the proposed FST.

Jet charge modification in dense QCD matter

In these proceedings we report a recent calculation of the jet charge modification in heavy-ion relative to proton collisions at the LHC. Jets have played an essential role in constraining theories of in-medium parton shower evolution and in determining the properties of the quark-gluon plasma created in ultra-relativistic nuclear reactions. It is important to extend these studies to flavor-tagged jets and explore observables that are sensitive to their partonic origin. The average jet charge, introduced early on in the history of quantum chromodynamics, is a proxy for the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory, we show how to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environments. We identify observables that can isolate the contribution of in-medium branching from isospin effects and present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.

Jet charge modification in dense QCD matter

Jet production and jet substructure modification in heavy-ion collisions have played an essential role in revealing the in-medium evolution of parton showers and the determination of the properties of strongly-interacting matter under extreme conditions. It is imperative to extend these studies to include flavor tagging and to devise observables that are sensitive to the partonic origin of jets. The average jet charge, defined as the momentum-weighted sum of the electric charges of particles inside the jet, is a proxy of the electric charge of the quark or gluon that initiates the jet. We demonstrate how the factorization framework of soft-collinear effective theory can be generalized to evaluate the jet charge in a dense strongly-interacting matter environment, such as the one produced in nuclear reactions at collider energies. Observables that can separate the contribution of in-medium branching from the trivial isospin effects are identified and their connection to established jet quenching effects is elucidated. We present predictions for the transverse momentum dependence of the jet charge distribution in nucleus-nucleus collisions and its modification relative to the proton case.

An Effective Theory of Quarkonia in QCD Matter

For heavy quarkonia of moderate energy, we generalize the relevant successful theory, non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD), to include interactions in nuclear matter. The new resulting theory, NRQCD with Glauber gluons, provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the interaction of heavy quarkonia with a strongly interacting medium, consistently applicable to a range of phases, such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. The effective field theory we present in this work is derived from first principles and is an important step forward in understanding the common trends in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus data on quarkonium suppression.

An Effective Theory of Quarkonia in QCD Matter

The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-medium interaction of heavy quarkonia, consistently applicable to a range of phases such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. It is an important step forward in understanding the common trends in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus data on quarkonium suppression. We derive explicitly the leading and sub-leading interaction terms in the Lagrangian and show the connection of the leading result to existing phenomenology.

Inverting the mass hierarchy of jet quenching effects with prompt $b$-jet substructure

In these proceedings, we discuss the role of heavy quark mass on the formation of parton showers. Mass effects are not well understood when parton branching occurs in nuclear matter, such as the quark-gluon plasma. Recently, a theoretically consistent picture of open heavy flavor production in ultra relativistic nuclear collisions has begun to emerge based on effective theories of QCD, such as soft collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons. We show that implementation of in-medium splitting processes containing heavy quarks into next-to-leading order calculations of heavy flavor production leads to larger cross section suppression when compared to traditional energy loss phenomenology. To better constrain the important mass dependence of in-medium splitting functions, we propose a new measurement in relativistic heavy ion collisions, based on a two-prong structure inside a reconstructed heavy flavor jet. In the region of jet transverse momenta where parton mass effects are leading, we predict a unique reversal of the mass hierarchy of jet quenching effects in heavy ion relative to proton collisions. We find that the momentum sharing distribution of prompt $b$-tagged jets is more strongly modified in comparison to the one for light jets. The work summarized here opens new directions of research on the substructure of heavy flavor jets.

Initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss effects on inclusive jet production in p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

Recent measurements of the centrality and rapidity dependence of single inclusive jet production in p+Pb collisions at the LHC have revealed large and non-trivial nuclear modification of the production cross section for this process. In this paper, we explore to what extent such nuclear modification can be understood by the framework of standard cold nuclear matter effects, in particular initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss. We demonstrate quantitatively that theoretical calculations which include medium-induced radiative corrections can describe rather reasonably the attenuation of the jet production yields in the large transverse momentum region in d+Au collisions at RHIC and p+Pb collisions at the LHC for central to semi-central collisions. We further show that the observed scaling behavior of the nuclear modification factor as a function of the total jet energy $p_T\, {\cosh} (y)$ for various rapidity intervals has a natural explanation in the picture of cold nuclear matter energy loss. On the other hand, the observed enhancement in peripheral collisions is not described in this picture and could have a different origin.

Jet fragmentation functions in proton-proton collisions using soft-collinear effective theory

The jet fragmentation function describes the longitudinal momentum distribution of hadrons inside a reconstructed jet. We study the jet fragmentation function in proton-proton collisions in the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). We find that, up to power corrections, the jet fragmentation function can be expressed as the ratio of the fragmenting jet function and the unmeasured jet function. Using renormalization group techniques, we are able to resum large logarithms of jet radii R in the perturbative expansion of the cross section. We use our theoretical formalism to describe the jet fragmentation functions for light hadron and heavy meson production measured at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Our calculations agree very well with the experimental data for the light hadron production. On the other hand, although our calculations for the heavy meson production inside jets are consistent with the PYTHIA simulation, they fail to describe the LHC data. We find that the jet fragmentation function for heavy meson production is very sensitive to the gluon-to-heavy-meson fragmentation function.

Jet Quenching from QCD Evolution

Recent advances in soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons have led to the development of a new method that gives a unified description of inclusive hadron production in reactions with nucleons and heavy nuclei. We show how this approach, based on the generalization of the DGLAP evolution equations to include final-state medium-induced parton showers, can be combined with initial-state effects for applications to jet quenching phenomenology. We demonstrate that the traditional parton energy loss calculations can be regarded as a special soft-gluon emission limit of the general QCD evolution framework. We present phenomenological comparison of the SCET$_{\rm G}$-based results on the suppression of inclusive charged hadron and neutral pion production in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV lead-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider to experimental data. We also show theoretical predictions for the upcoming $\sqrt{s_{NN}} \simeq 5.1$ TeV Pb+Pb run at the LHC.

Jet substructure using semi-inclusive jet functions within SCET

We propose a new method to evaluate jet substructure observables in inclusive jet measurements, based upon semi-inclusive jet functions in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET). As a first example, we consider the jet fragmentation function, where a hadron $h$ is identified inside a fully reconstructed jet. We introduce a new semi-inclusive fragmenting jet function ${\mathcal G}^h_i(z= ω_J/ω,z_h=ω_h/ω_J,ω_J, R,μ)$, which depends on the jet radius $R$ and the large light-cone momenta of the parton `$i$' initiating the jet ($ω$), the jet ($ω_J$), and the hadron $h$ ($ω_h$). The jet fragmentation function can then be expressed as a semi-inclusive observable, in the spirit of actual experimental measurements, rather than as an exclusive one. We demonstrate the consistency of the effective field theory treatment and standard perturbative QCD calculations of this observable at next-to-leading order (NLO). The renormalization group (RG) equation for the semi-inclusive fragmenting jet function ${\mathcal G}_i^h(z,z_h, ω_J, R,μ)$ are also derived and shown to follow exactly the usual timelike DGLAP evolution equations for fragmentation functions. The newly obtained RG equations can be used to perform the resummation of single logarithms of the jet radius parameter $R$ up to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL$_R$) accuracy. In combination with the fixed NLO calculation, we obtain NLO+NLL$_R$ results for the hadron distribution inside the jet. We present numerical results for $pp\to(\mathrm{jet}\,h)X$ in the new framework, and find excellent agreement with existing LHC experimental data.

Photon-tagged and B-meson-tagged b-jet production at the LHC

Tagged jet measurements in high energy hadronic and nuclear reactions provide constraints on the energy and parton flavor origin of the parton shower that recoils against the tagging particle. Such additional insight can be especially beneficial in illuminating the mechanisms of heavy flavor production in proton-proton collisions at the LHC and their modification in the heavy ion environment, which are not fully understood. With this motivation, we present theoretical results for isolated-photon-tagged and B-meson-tagged b-jet production at center-of-mass energy 5.1 TeV for comparison to the upcoming lead-lead data. We find that photon-tagged b-jets exhibit smaller momentum imbalance shift in nuclear matter, and correspondingly smaller energy loss, than photon-tagged light flavor jets. Our results show that B-meson tagging is most effective in ensuring that the dominant fraction of recoiling jets originate from prompt b-quarks. Interestingly, in this channel the large suppression of the cross section is not accompanied by a significant momentum imbalance shift.

SCET for jet physics in the vacuum and the medium

In this plenary talk I discuss soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) as a framework for precision QCD phenomenology. Emphasis is placed on jet and heavy flavor observables accessible at current and future collider facilities. One of the principal challenges that calculations of hard probes in heavy ion reactions face is the ambiguity associated with the implementation of medium-induced radiative effects. I demonstrate how extension of SCET to describe parton propagation in QCD matter has helped quantify and reduce the theoretical uncertainty in jet quenching calculations.

Spin asymmetries for vector boson production in polarized p+p collisions

We study the cross section for vector boson ($W^{\pm}/Z^0/γ^*$) production in polarized nucleon-nucleon collisions for low transverse momentum of the observed vector boson. For the case where one measures the transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the vector bosons, we present the cross sections and the associated spin asymmetries in terms of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) at tree level within the TMD factorization formalism. To assess the feasibility of experimental measurements, we estimate the spin asymmetries for $W^{\pm}/Z^0$ boson production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) by using current knowledge of the relevant TMDs. We find that some of these asymmetries can be sizable if the suppression effect from TMD evolution is not too strong. The $W$ program at RHIC can, thus, test and constrain spin theory by providing unique information on the universality properties of TMDs, TMD evolution, and the nucleon structure. For example, the single transverse spin asymmetries could be used to probe the well-known Sivers function $f_{1T}^{\perp q}$, as well as the transversal helicity distribution $g_{1T}^{q}$ via the parity-violating nature of $W$ production.

The semi-inclusive jet function in SCET and small radius resummation for inclusive jet production

We introduce a new kind of jet function: the semi-inclusive jet function $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$, which describes how a parton $i$ is transformed into a jet with a jet radius $R$ and energy fraction $z = ω_J/ω$, with $ω_J$ and $ω$ being the large light-cone momentum component of the jet and the corresponding parton $i$ that initiates the jet, respectively. Within the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) we calculate both $J_q(z, ω_J, μ)$ and $J_g(z, ω_J, μ)$ to the next-to-leading order (NLO) for cone and anti-k$_{\rm T}$ algorithms. We demonstrate that the renormalization group (RG) equations for $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$ follow exactly the usual DGLAP evolution, which can be used to perform the $\ln R$ resummation for {\it inclusive} jet cross sections with a small jet radius $R$. We clarify the difference between our RG equations for $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$ and those for the so-called unmeasured jet functions $J_i(ω_J, μ)$, widely used in SCET for {\it exclusive} jet production. Finally, we present applications of the new semi-inclusive jet functions to inclusive jet production in $e^+e^-$ and $pp$ collisions. We demonstrate that single inclusive jet production in these collisions shares the same short-distance hard functions as single inclusive hadron production, with only the fragmentation functions $D_i^h(z, μ)$ replaced by $J_i(z, ω_J, μ)$. This can facilitate more efficient higher-order analytical computations of jet cross sections. We further match our $\ln R$ resummation at both LL$_{R}$ and NLL$_{R}$ to fixed NLO results and present the phenomenological implications for single inclusive jet production at the LHC.

Towards the understanding of jet shapes and cross sections in heavy ion collisions using soft-collinear effective theory

We calculate the jet shape and the jet cross section in heavy ion collisions using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) and its extension with Glauber gluon interactions in the medium (SCET$_{\rm G}$). We use the previously developed framework to systematically resum the jet shape at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and we consistently include the medium modification by incorporating the leading order medium-induced splitting functions. The calculation provides, for the first time, a quantitative understanding of the jet shape modification measurement in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The inclusive jet suppression is also calculated within the same framework beyond the traditional concept of parton energy loss, and the dependence on the centrality, the jet radius and the jet kinematics is examined. In the end we present predictions for the anticipated jet shape and cross section measurements in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\approx5.1$ TeV at the LHC.

A Study of Quasi-parton Distribution Functions in the Diquark Spectator Model

To facilitate lattice QCD calculations of nucleon structute, a set of quasi-parton distributions were recently introduced. These quasi-PDFs were shown to reduce to standard PDFs when the nucleon is boosted to high energies, $P_z\rightarrow \infty$. Since taking such limit is not feasible in lattice simulations, it is essential to provide guidance for what values of $P_z$ the quasi-PDFs are good approximations of standard PDFs. Within the framework of the spectator diquark model, we evaluate both the up and down quarks' quasi-PDFs and standard PDFs for all leading-twist distributions (unpolarized distribution $f_1$, helicity distribution $g_1$, and transversity distribution $h_1$). We find that, for intermediate parton momentum fractions $x$, quasi-PDFs are good approximations to standard PDFs (within $20-30\%$) when $P_z\gtrsim 1.5-2$ GeV. On the other hand, for large $x\sim 1$ much larger $P_z > 4$ GeV is necessary to obtain a satisfactory agreement between the two sets. We further find that the Soffer positivity bound does not hold in general for quasi-PDFs.

Initial-state splitting kernels in cold nuclear matter

We derive medium-induced splitting kernels for energetic partons that undergo interactions in dense QCD matter before a hard-scattering event at large momentum transfer $Q^2$. Working in the framework of the effective theory ${\rm SCET}_{\rm G}\,$, we compute the splitting kernels beyond the soft gluon approximation. We present numerical studies that compare our new results with previous findings. We expect the full medium-induced splitting kernels to be most relevant for the extension of initial-state cold nuclear matter energy loss phenomenology in both p+A and A+A collisions.

Next-to-leading order transverse momentum-weighted Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering: the role of the three-gluon correlator

We study the Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering. We concentrate on the contribution from the photon-gluon fusion channel at ${\cal O}(α_{em}^2 α_s)$, where three-gluon correlation functions play a major role within the twist-3 collinear factorization formalism. We establish the correspondence between such a formalism with three gluon correlation functions and the usual transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism at moderate hadron transverse momenta. We derive the coefficient functions used in the usual TMD evolution formalism related to the quark Sivers function expansion in terms of the three-gluon correlation functions. We further perform the next-to-leading order calculation for the transverse-momentum-weighted spin-dependent differential cross section, and identify the off-diagonal contribution from the three-gluon correlation functions to the QCD collinear evolution of the twist-3 Qiu-Sterman function.

Quasi-parton distribution functions: a study in the diquark spectator model

A set of quasi-parton distribution functions (quasi-PDFs) have been recently proposed by Ji. Defined as the matrix elements of equal-time spatial correlations, they can be computed on the lattice and should reduce to the standard PDFs when the proton momentum $P_z$ is very large. Since taking the $P_z\to \infty$ limit is not feasible in lattice simulations, it is essential to provide guidance for what values of $P_z$ the quasi-PDFs are good approximations of standard PDFs. Within the framework of the spectator diquark model, we evaluate both the up and down quarks' quasi-PDFs and standard PDFs for all leading-twist distributions (unpolarized distribution $f_1$, helicity distribution $g_1$, and transversity distribution $h_1$). We find that, for intermediate parton momentum fractions $x$, quasi-PDFs are good approximations to standard PDFs (within $20-30%$) when $P_z\gtrsim 1.5-2$ GeV. On the other hand, for large $x\sim 1$ much larger $P_z > 4$ GeV is necessary to obtain a satisfactory agreement between the two sets. We further test the Soffer positivity bound, and find that it does not hold in general for quasi-PDFs.

Quenching of inclusive and tagged b-jets at the LHC

We present theoretical predictions for the nuclear-induced attenuation of the differential cross sections for inclusive and tagged b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC. We find that for inclusive b-jet production at high transverse momentum the mass effects are negligible, and that the attenuation is comparable to the one observed for light jets. On the other hand, for isolated-photon and B-meson-tagged b-jets the sample of events with heavy quarks produced at the early stages of the collision is greatly enhanced. Thus, these tagged b-jet final-states have a much more direct connection to the physics of b-quark energy loss. We present theoretical predictions for the quenching of such tagged b-jet events at the LHC and the QGP-induced modification of the related momentum imbalance and asymmetry. We demonstrate that these tagged processes can be used to accurately study the physics of heavy quark production and propagation in dense QCD matter.

Soft-collinear effective theory for hadronic and nuclear collisions: The evolution of jet quenching from RHIC to the highest LHC energies

In the framework of soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons, results and predictions for inclusive hadron suppression, based upon in-medium parton shower evolution, are presented for Au+Au and Pb+Pb collisions at RHIC and LHC energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ AGeV and $\sqrt{s}=2.76, \, 5.1$ ATeV, respectively. The $\rm SCET_G$ medium-induced splitting kernels are further implemented to evaluate the attenuation of reconstructed jet cross in such reactions and to examine their centrality and radius $R$ dependence. Building upon a previously developed method to systematically resum the jet shape at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, a quantitative understanding of the jet shape modification measurement in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ ATeV at the LHC can be achieved. Predictions for photon-tagged jet cross sections and shapes, that can shed light on the parton flavor dependence of in-medium parton shower modification, are also given.

An operator definition and derivation of collisional energy and momentum loss in relativistic plasmas

We present an operator definition of the collisional energy and momentum loss suffered by an energetic charged particle in the presence of a medium. Our approach uses the energy-momentum tensor of the medium to evaluate the energy and momentum transfer rates. We apply this formalism to an energetic lepton or quark propagating in thermal electron-positron or quark-gluon plasmas, respectively. By using two different approaches to describe the energetic charged particle, an external current approach and a diagrammatic approach, we show explicitly that the operator method reproduces the known results for collisional energy loss from the scattering rate formalism. We further use our results to evaluate the collisional energy and momentum loss for the cases of heavy quark propagation through a quark-gluon plasma and energetic muon propagation in an electron-positron plasma produced in a high-intensity laser field.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions: current status and prospects for application of QCD evolution techniques

In the past decade the observation of cross section modification for leading hadrons, heavy flavor and two particle correlations in heavy ion collisions has provided important insights into the dynamics of parton propagation in dense strongly-interacting matter. The development of the theory of reconstructed jets and related experimental measurements have further shed light on the characteristics of in-medium parton showers. So far, experimental results from ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC have been analyzed in the framework of parton energy loss, where the precision of the theoretical predictions cannot be systematically improved. Only recently have higher order calculations and applications of resummation and evolution to heavy ion collisions begun to emerge. Several examples of such advances are discussed in these proceedings.

Initial-State Bremsstrahlung versus Final-State Hydrodynamic Sources of Azimuthal Harmonics in p+A at RHIC and LHC

Recent pT<2~GeV azimuthal correlation data from the Beam Energy Scan (BES) and D+Au runs at RHIC/BNL and, especially, the surprising similarity of azimuthal $v_n\{2m\}(p_T)$ ``transeverse flow'' harmonics in $p+Pb$ and $Pb+Pb$ at LHC have challenged the uniqueness of local equilibrium ``perfect fluid'' interpretations of those data. We report results at QM14 on azimuthal harmonics associated with initial-state non-abelian ``wave interference'' effects predicted by perturbative QCD gluon bremsstrahlung and sourced by Color Scintillation Arrays (CSA) of color antennas. CSA are naturally identified with multiple projectile and target beam jets produced in inelastic p+A reactions. We find a remarkable similarity between azimuthal harmonics sourced by initial state CSA and those predicted with final state perfect fluid models of high energy p+A reactions. The question of which mechanism dominates in $p+A$ and $A+A$ remains open at this time.

Jet quenching phenomenology from soft-collinear effective theory with Glauber gluons

We present the first application of a recently-developed effective theory of jet propagation in matter SCETG to inclusive hadron suppression in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. SCETG-based splitting kernels allow us to go beyond the traditional energy loss approximation and unify the treatment of vacuum and medium-induced parton showers. In the soft gluon emission limit, we establish a simple analytic relation between the QCD evolution and energy loss approaches to jet quenching. We quantify the uncertainties associated with the implementation of the in-medim modification of hadron production cross sections and show that the coupling between the jet and the medium can be constrained with better than 10% accuracy.

Jet Shape Resummation Using Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

The jet shape is a classic jet substructure observable that probes the average transverse energy profile inside a reconstructed jet. The studies of jet shapes in proton-proton collisions have served as precision tests of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). They have also recently become the baseline for studying the in-medium modification of parton showers in ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The jet shape is a function of two angular parameters $R$ and $r$, which can be at hierarchical scales. Its calculation suffers from large logarithms of the ratio between the two scales, and these phase space logarithms can conveniently be resummed in the framework of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). We find that, up to power corrections, the integral jet shape can be expressed in a factorized form which involves only the ratio between two jet energy functions. Resummation is performed at next-to-leading logarithmic order using renormalization-group evolution techniques. Comparisons to jet shape measurements at the LHC are presented to verify the dominant role of the collinear parton shower and to identify the kinematic region in which power-suppressed soft modes and non-perturbative effects may play a role.

Multiple scattering effects on heavy meson production in p+A collisions at backward rapidity

We study the incoherent multiple scattering effects on heavy meson production in the backward rapidity region of p+A collisions within the generalized high-twist factorization formalism. We calculate explicitly the double scattering contributions to the heavy meson differential cross sections by taking into account both initial-state and final-state interactions, and find that these corrections are positive. We further evaluate the nuclear modification factor for muons that come form the semi-leptonic decays of heavy flavor mesons. Phenomenological applications in d+Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC and in p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV at the LHC are presented. We find that incoherent multiple scattering can describe rather well the observed nuclear enhancement in the intermediate $p_T$ region for such reactions.

Next-to-leading order forward hadron production in the small-$x$ regime: rapidity factorization

Single inclusive hadron production at forward rapidity in high energy p+A collisions is an important probe of the high gluon density regime of QCD and the associated small-$x$ formalism. We revisit an earlier one-loop calculation to illustrate the significance of the "rapidity factorization" approach in this regime. Such factorization separates the very small-$x$ unintegrated gluon density evolution and leads to a new correction term to the physical cross section at one-loop level. Importantly, this rapidity factorization formalism remedies the previous unphysical negative next-to-leading order contribution to the cross section. It is much more stable with respect to "rapidity" variation when compared to the leading-order calculation and provides improved agreement between theory and experiment in the forward rapidity region.

QCD Evolution of the Sivers Asymmetry

We study the QCD evolution of the Sivers effect in both semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan production (DY). We pay close attention to the non-perturbative spin-independent Sudakov factor in the evolution formalism and find a universal form which can describe reasonably well the experimental data on the transverse momentum distributions in SIDIS, DY lepton pair and $W/Z$ production. With this Sudakov factor at hand, we perform a global fitting of all the experimental data on the Sivers asymmetry in SIDIS from HERMES, COMPASS and Jefferson Lab. We then make predictions for the Sivers asymmetry in DY lepton pair and $W$ production that can be compared to the future experimental measurements to test the sign change of the Sivers functions between SIDIS and DY processes and constrain the sea quark Sivers functions.

We analyze the Sivers asymmetry in both Drell-Yan (DY) production and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), while considering properly defined transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions and their QCD evolution. After finding a universal non-perturbative spin-independent Sudakov factor that can describe reasonably well the world's data of SIDIS, DY lepton pair and $W/Z$ production in unpolarized scatterings, we perform a global fitting of all the experimental data on the Sivers asymmetry in SIDIS from HERMES, COMPASS and Jefferson Lab. Then we make predictions for the asymmetry in DY lepton pair and $W$ boson production, which could be compared to the future experimental data in order to test the sign change of the Sivers function.

Angular distributions of higher order splitting functions in the vacuum and in dense QCD matter

We study the collinear splitting functions needed for next-to-next-to-leading order calculations of jet production in the vacuum and in dense QCD matter. These splitting functions describe the probability of a parton to evolve into three-parton final state and are generalizations of the traditional DGLAP splitting kernels to a higher perturbative order. Of particular interest are the angular distributions of such splitting functions, which can elucidate the significance of multiple parton branching for jet observables and guide the construction of parton shower Monte Carlo generators. We find that to ${\cal O}(α_s^2)$ both the vacuum and the in-medium collinear splitting functions are neither angular ordered nor anti-angular ordered. Specifically, in dense QCD matter they retain the characteristic broad angular distribution already found in the ${\cal O}(α_s)$ result.

High transverse momentum quarkonium production and dissociation in heavy ion collisions

We calculate the yields of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC as a function of their transverse momentum. Based upon non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics, our results include both color-singlet and color-octet contributions and feed-down effects from excited states. In reactions with ultra-relativistic nuclei, we focus on the consistent implementation of dynamically calculated nuclear matter effects, such as coherent power corrections, cold nuclear matter energy loss, and the Cronin effect in the initial state. In the final state, we consider radiative energy loss for the color-octet state and collisional dissociation of quarkonia as they traverse through the QGP. Theoretical results are presented for J/psi and Upsilon and compared to experimental data where applicable. At RHIC, a good description of the high-pT J/psi modification observed in central Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions can be achieved within the model uncertainties. We find that measurements of J/psi yields in proton-nucleus reactions are needed to constrain the magnitude of cold nuclear matter effects. At the LHC, a good description of the experimental data can be achieved only in mid-central and peripheral Pb+Pb collisions. The large five-fold suppression of prompt J/psi in the most central nuclear reactions may indicate for the first time possible thermal effects at the level of the quarkonium wavefunction at large transverse momenta.

Inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

Theoretical and experimental advances in understanding light jet production and modification in Pb+Pb reactions at a center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV have been a highlight of the LHC heavy ion program. At the same time, the detailed mechanisms of heavy quark energy loss in dense QCD matter are not yet fully understood. With this motivation, we present theoretical predictions for the nuclear-induced attenuation of the differential cross sections for inclusive b-jet production in heavy ion collisions at the LHC for comparison to upcoming data. We find that for transverse momenta pT > 75 GeV both hadronization and mass effects are negligible and this attenuation is comparable to the one observed for light jets. We discuss how the detailed b-jet quenching patterns can be used to gain new insight into the in-medium heavy flavor dynamics.

Momentum imbalance of isolated photon-tagged jet production at RHIC and LHC

In collisions of ultra-relativistic nuclei, photon-tagged jets provide a unique opportunity to compare jet production and modification due to parton shower formation and propagation in strongly-interacting matter at vastly different center-of-mass energies. We present first results for the cross sections of jets tagged by an isolated photon to ${\cal O}(α_{\rm em} α_s^2)$ in central Au+Au reactions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV at RHIC and central Pb+Pb reactions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=2.76$ TeV at LHC. We evaluate the increase in the transverse momentum imbalance of the observed $γ$+jet state, induced by the dissipation of the parton shower energy due to strong final-state interactions. Theoretical predictions to help interpret recent and upcoming experimental data are presented.

Multiple scattering effects on inclusive particle production in the large-x regime

We study the multiple scattering effects on inclusive particle production in p+A and $γ$+A collisions. Specifically, we concentrate on the region where the parton momentum fraction in the nucleus $x\sim {\cal O}(1)$ and incoherent multiple interactions are relevant. By taking into account both initial-state and final-state double scattering, we derive the nuclear size-enhanced power corrections to the differential cross section for single inclusive hadron production in p+A and $γ$+A reactions, and for prompt photon production in p+A reactions. We find that the final result can be written in a simple compact form in terms of four-parton correlation functions, in which the second-derivative, first-derivative and non-derivative terms of the correlation distributions share the same hard-scattering functions. We expect our result to be especially relevant for understanding the nuclear modification of particle production in the backward rapidity regions in p+A and e+A collisions.

${\cal O}(α_s^3)$ analysis of inclusive jet and di-jet production in heavy ion reactions at the Large Hadron Collider

Jets physics in heavy ion reactions is an important new area of active research at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) that paves the way for novel tests of QCD multi-parton dynamics in dense nuclear matter. At present, perturbative QCD calculations of hard probes in elementary nucleon-nucleon reactions can be consistently combined with the effects of the nuclear medium up to $ {\cal O}(α_s^3) $. While such accuracy is desirable but not necessary for leading particle tomography, it is absolutely essential for the new jet observables. With this motivation, we present first results and predictions to $ {\cal O}(α_s^3) $ for the recent LHC lead-lead (Pb+Pb) run at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon-nucleon pair. Specifically, we focus on the suppression of the single and double inclusive jet cross sections. Our analysis includes not only final-state inelastic parton interactions in the QGP, but also initial-state cold nuclear matter effects and an estimate of the non-perturbative hadronization corrections. We demonstrate how an enhanced di-jet asymmetry in central Pb+Pb reactions at the LHC, recently measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments, can be derived from these results. We show quantitatively that a fraction of this enhancement may be related to the ambiguity in the separation between the jet and the soft background medium and/or the diffusion of the parton shower energy away from the jet axis through collisional processes. We point to a suite of measurements that can help build a consistent picture of parton shower modification in heavy ion collisions at the LHC.

Electroweak boson-tagged jet event asymmetries at the Large Hadron Collider

Tagged jet measurements provide a promising experimental channel to quantify the similarities and differences in the mechanisms of jet production in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions. We present the first calculation of the transverse momentum asymmetry of $Z^0/γ^*$-tagged jet events and the momentum imbalance of $γ$-tagged jet events in $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV reactions at the LHC. Our results combine the ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$, ${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2)$ perturbative cross sections with the radiative and collisional processes that modify parton showers in the presence of dense QCD matter. We find that strong asymmetry momentum and imbalance, respectively, are generated in central Pb+Pb reactions that have little sensitivity to the fluctuations of the underlying soft hadronic background. We present theoretical model predictions for their shape and magnitude.

Nuclear modification of high transverse momentum particle production in p+A collisions at RHIC and LHC

We present results and predictions for the nuclear modification of the differential cross sections for inclusive light hadron and prompt photon production in minimum bias d+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV and minimum bias p+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5$ TeV at RHIC and LHC, respectively. Our calculations combine the leading order perturbative QCD formalism with cold nuclear matter effects that arise from the elastic, inelastic and coherent multiple scattering of partons in large nuclei. We find that a theoretical approach that includes the isospin effect, Cronin effect, cold nuclear matter energy loss and dynamical shadowing can describe the RHIC d+Au data rather well. The LHC p+Pb predictions will soon be confronted by new experimental results to help clarify the magnitude and origin of cold nuclear matter effects and facilitate precision dense QCD matter tomography.

Probing nuclear matter with jets

Jet physics in relativistic heavy ion collisions, which combines perturbative QCD jet production with quark and gluon energy loss and in-medium parton shower modification, has emerged as a powerful tool to probe the properties of strongly-interacting matter formed in high-energy nuclear reactions. We present selected results for the modification of jet cross sections and related observables in the ambiance of hot and/or dense nuclear medium. We focus on the inclusive jet spectrum and dijets [${\cal O}(α_s^3) $], and $Z^0/γ^*$ tagged jets [${\cal O}(G_Fα_s^2) $] in the framework of perturbative QCD.

Transverse momentum imbalance of back-to-back particle production in p+A and e+A collisions

We study the nuclear enhancement of the transverse momentum imbalance for back-to-back particle production in both p+A and e+A collisions. Specifically, we present results for photon+jet and photon+hadron production in p+A collisions, di-jet and di-hadron production in e+A collisions, and heavy-quark and heavy-meson pair production in both p+A and e+A collisions. We evaluate the effect of both initial-state and final-state multiple scattering, which determine the strength of the nuclear-induced transverse momentum imbalance in these processes. We give theoretical predictions for the experimentally relevant kinematic regions in d+Au collisions at RHIC, p+Pb collisions at LHC and e+A collisions at the future EIC and LHeC.

Transverse momentum-weighted Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering at next-to-leading order

We study the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD corrections to the transverse momentum-weighted Sivers asymmetry in semi-inclusive hadron production in lepton-proton deep inelastic scattering. The corresponding differential cross section is evaluated as a convolution of a twist-three quark-gluon correlation function, often referred to as Qiu-Sterman function, the usual unpolarized fragmentation function, and a hard coefficient function. By studying the collinear divergence structure, we identify the evolution kernel for the Qiu-Sterman function. The hard coefficient function, which is finite and free of any divergence, is evaluated at one-loop order.

An effective theory for jet propagation in dense QCD matter: jet broadening and medium-induced bremsstrahlung

Two effects, jet broadening and gluon bremsstrahlung induced by the propagation of a highly energetic quark in dense QCD matter, are reconsidered from effective theory point of view. We modify the standard Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) Lagrangian to include Glauber modes, which are needed to implement the interactions between the medium and the collinear fields. We derive the Feynman rules for this Lagrangian and show that it is invariant under soft and collinear gauge transformations. We find that the newly constructed theory SCET$_{\rm G}$ recovers exactly the general result for the transverse momentum broadening of jets. In the limit where the radiated gluons are significantly less energetic than the parent quark, we obtain a jet energy-loss kernel identical to the one discussed in the reaction operator approach to parton propagation in matter. In the framework of SCET$_{\rm G}$ we present results for the fully-differential bremsstrahlung spectrum for both the incoherent and the Landau-Pomeranchunk-Migdal suppressed regimes beyond the soft-gluon approximation. Gauge invariance of the physics results is demonstrated explicitly by performing the calculations in both the light-cone and covariant $R_ξ$ gauges. We also show how the process-dependent medium-induced radiative corrections factorize from the jet production cross section on the example of the quark jets considered here.

Dihadron momentum imbalance and correlations in d+Au collisions

We calculate in perturbative QCD the transverse momentum imbalance of dijet and dihadron production in high energy p+A (d+A) collisions. We evaluate the effect of both initial- and final-state multiple scattering, which determines the strength of this transverse momentum imbalance. Combining this new result with the suppression of the cross section in d+Au collisions, which arises from cold nuclear matter energy loss and coherent power corrections, we are able to describe the dihadron correlations measured by both PHENIX and STAR collaborations at RHIC, including mid-mid, mid-forward, and forward-forward rapidity hadron pairs.

Medium-induced parton splitting kernels from Soft Collinear Effective Theory with Glauber gluons

We derive the splitting kernels for partons produced in large $Q^2$ scattering processes that subsequently traverse a region of strongly-interacting matter using a recently-developed effective theory \SCETG. We include all corrections beyond the small-$x$ approximation, consistent with the power counting of \SCETG. We demonstrate how medium recoil, geometry and expansion scenarios, and phase space cuts can be implemented numerically for phenomenological applications. For the simplified case of infinite transverse momentum kinematics and a uniform medium, we provide closed-form analytic results that can be used to validate the numerical simulations.

NLO analysis of inclusive jet, tagged jet and di-jet production in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We present results and predictions at next-to-leading order for the recent LHC lead-lead run at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV per nucleon-nucleon pair. Specifically, we focus on the suppression the single and double inclusive jet cross sections and demonstrate how the di-jet asymmetry, recently measured by ATLAS and CMS, can be extracted from this general result. The case of jets tagged by an electroweak boson is exemplified by the $Z^0$+jet channel. We predict a signature transition from enhancement to suppression of the tagged jet related to the medium-induced modification of the parton shower. Finally, we clarify the relation between the suppression of inclusive jets, tagged jets and di-jets and the quenching of inclusive particles on the example of the recent ALICE charged hadron attenuation data.

Parton showers as sources of energy-momentum deposition in the QGP and their implication for shockwave formation at RHIC and at the LHC

We derive the distribution of energy and momentum transmitted from a primary fast parton and its medium-induced bremsstrahlung gluons to a thermalized quark-gluon plasma. Our calculation takes into account the important and thus far neglected effects of quantum interference between the resulting color currents. We use our result to obtain the rate at which energy is absorbed by the medium as a function of time and find that the rate is modified by the quantum interference between the primary parton and secondary gluons. This Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal type interference persists for time scales relevant to heavy ion phenomenology. We further couple the newly derived source of energy and momentum deposition to linearized hydrodynamics to obtain the bulk medium response to realistic parton propagation and splitting in the quark-gluon plasma. We find that because of the characteristic large angle in-medium gluon emission and the multiple sources of energy deposition in a parton shower, formation of well defined Mach cones by energetic jets in heavy ion reactions is not likely.

Photon-tagged heavy meson production in high energy nuclear collisions

We study the photon-triggered light and heavy meson production in both p+p and A+A collisions. We find that a parton energy loss approach that successfully describes inclusive hadron attenuation in nucleus-nucleus reactions at RHIC can simultaneously describe well the experimentally determined photon-triggered light hadron fragmentation functions. Using the same framework, we generalize our formalism to study photon-triggered heavy meson production. We find that the nuclear modification of photon-tagged heavy meson fragmentation functions in A+A collision is very different from that of the photon-tagged light hadron case. While photon-triggered light hadron fragmentation functions in A+A collisions are suppressed relative to p+p, photon-triggered heavy meson fragmentation functions can be either enhanced or suppressed, depending on the specific kinematic region. The anticipated smaller energy loss for $b$-quarks manifests itself as a flatter photon-triggered $B$-meson fragmentation function compared to that for the $D$-meson case. We make detailed predictions for both RHIC and LHC energies. We conclude that a comprehensive comparative study of both photon-tagged light and heavy meson production can provide new insights in the details of the jet quenching mechanism.

Jet tomography of high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order

We demonstrate that jet observables are highly sensitive to the characteristics of the vacuum and the in-medium QCD parton showers and propose techniques that exploit this sensitivity to constrain the mechanism of quark and gluon energy loss in strongly-interacting plasmas. As a first example, we calculate the inclusive jet cross section in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions to ${\cal O}(α_s^3)$. Theoretical predictions for the medium-induced jet broadening and the suppression of the jet production rate due to cold and hot nuclear matter effects in Au+Au and Cu+Cu reactions at RHIC are presented.

Coherent power corrections to structure functions

We calculate and resum a perturbative expansion of nuclear enhanced power corrections to the structure functions measured in deeply inelastic scattering of leptons on a nuclear target. Our results for the Bjorken x-, Q**2- and A-dependence of nuclear shadowing in F2(x,Q**2;A) and the nuclear modifications to FL(x,Q**2;A), obtained in terms of the QCD factorization approach, are consistent with the existing data. We predict the dynamical shadowing from final state interactions in neutrino-nucleus reactions for sea and valence quarks in the structure functions F2(x,Q**2;A) and xF3(x,Q**2;A), respectively. In p+A collisions we calculate the centrality and rapidity dependent nuclear suppression of single and double inclusive hadron production at moderate transverse momenta.

Jet quenching in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Parton propagation in dense nuclear matter results in elastic, inelastic and coherent multiple soft scattering with the in-medium color charges. Such scattering leads to calculable modifications of the hadron production cross section that is evaluated in the framework of the perturbative QCD factorization approach. Final state medium-induced gluon bremsstrahlung is arguably the most efficient way of suppressing large transverse momentum particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The observed hadronic attenuation, known as jet quenching, can be related to the properties of the medium, such as density and temperature, and carries valuable information about the early stages of heavy ion reactions. Non-Abelian energy loss in the quark-gluon plasma can be studied in much greater detail through the modification of the two particle back-to-back correlations. Perturbative calculations give good description of the redistribution of the lost energy in lower transverse momentum particles and predict significant increase of the correlation width of away-side di-hadrons. In contrast, energy loss in cold nuclear matter was found to be small but for large values of Feynman-x is expected to complement the dynamical higher twist shadowing in experimentally observable forward rapidity hadron suppression.

Initial State Parton Broadening and Energy Loss Probed in d+Au at RHIC

The impact parameter and rapidity dependence of the Cronin effect for massless pions in $d+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=200$ GeV at RHIC is computed in the framework of pQCD multiple elastic scattering on a nuclear target. We introduce a formalism to incorporate initial state energy loss in perturbative calculations and take into account the elastic energy loss in addition to the transverse momentum broadening of partons. We argue that the centrality dependence of the Cronin effect can distinguish between different hadron production scenarios at RHIC. Its magnitude and rapidity dependence are shown to carry important experimental information about the properties of cold nuclear matter up to the moderate- and large-$x$ antishadowing/EMC regions.
