A random matrix approach to the Peterson-Thom conjecture

The Peterson-Thom conjecture asserts that any diffuse, amenable subalgebra of a free group factor is contained in a unique maximal amenable subalgebra. This conjecture is motivated by related results in Popa's deformation/rigidity theory and Peterson-Thom's results on L^{2}-Betti numbers. We present an approach to this conjecture in terms of so-called strong convergence of random matrices by formulating a conjecture which is a natural generalization of the Haagerup-Thorbjornsen theorem whose validity would imply the Peterson-Thom conjecture. This random matrix conjecture is related to recent work of Collins-Guionnet-Parraud.

A random matrix approach to absorption in free products

This paper gives a free entropy theoretic perspective on amenable absorption results for free products of tracial von Neumann algebras. In particular, we give the first free entropy proof of Popa's famous result that the generator MASA in a free group factor is maximal amenable, and we partially recover Houdayer's results on amenable absorption and Gamma stability. Moreover, we give a unified approach to all these results using $1$-bounded entropy. We show that if $\mathcal{M} = \mathcal{P} * \mathcal{Q}$, then $\mathcal{P}$ absorbs any subalgebra of $\mathcal{M}$ that intersects it diffusely and that has $1$-bounded entropy zero (which includes amenable and property Gamma algebras as well as many others). In fact, for a subalgebra $\mathcal{P} \leq \mathcal{M}$ to have this absorption property, it suffices for $\mathcal{M}$ to admit random matrix models that have exponential concentration of measure and that "simulate" the conditional expectation onto $\mathcal{P}$.

Harmonic Models and Bernoullicity

We give many examples of algebraic actions which are factors of Bernoulli shifts. These include certain harmonic models over left orderable groups of large enough growth, as well as algebraic actions associated to certain lopsided elements in any left orderable group. For many of our examples, the acting group is amenable so these actions are Bernoulli (and not just a factor of a Bernoulli), but there is no obvious Bernoulli partition.

Fuglede-Kadison Determinants and Sofic Entropy

We relate Fuglede-Kadison determinants to entropy of algebraic actions of sofic groups in essentially complete generality. This generalizes recent results of Hanfeng Li and Andreas Thom from the amenable case to the sofic case, as well as results of David Kerr, Hanfeng Li, and Lewis Bowen in the residually finite case. Moreover, the proof given is the first calculation of entropy of algebraic actions to avoid a nontrivial determinant approximation. We apply our results to a problem of Christopher Deninger, generalizing results of Hanfeng Li and David Kerr. Finally, we show that in many cases, finiteness of topological entropy for algebraic actions of sofic groups is equivalent to having metric mean dimension zero.

An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representation of Sofic Groups II

In previous work, we defined extended versions of von Neumann dimension for Banach space representations of sofic groups. The main application was a definition of l^{p}-dimension and, using this, a proof that the actions of a countable discrete group G on l^{p}(G)^{oplus n} are pairwise non-isomorphic. We answer most of the Conjectures stated at the end of the previous paper "An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representation of Sofic Groups." Tackling the case of finte-dimensional representations involved passing to equivalence relations. This is part of current research to be explained in the paper "An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Representations of Equivalence Relations."

Mixing and Spectral Gap Relative to Pinsker Factors for Sofic Groups

Motivated by our previous results, we investigate structural properties of probability measure-preserving actions of sofic groups relative to their Pinsker factor. We also consider the same properties relative to the Outer Pinsker factor, which is another generalization of the Pinsker factor in the nonamenable case. The Outer Pinsker factor is motivated by extension entropy for extensions, which fixes some of the "pathological" behavior of sofic entropy: namely increase of entropy under factor maps. We show that an arbitrary probability measure-preserving action of a sofic group is mixing relative to its Pinsker and Outer Pinsker factors and, if the group is nonamenable, it has spectral gap relative to its Pinsker and Outer Pinsker factors. Our methods are similar to those we developed in "Polish models and sofic entropy" and based on representation-theoretic techniques. One crucial difference is that instead of considering unitary representations of a group we must consider *-representations of algebraic crossed products.

Polish Models and Sofic Entropy

For actions of a sofic group on probability spaces, the entropy has been defined by Bowen, with an extension by Kerr-Li. In particular, when the action is by homeomorphisms of a compact space preserving a given measure, Kerr-Li show one can compute the measure-theoretic entropy in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We show how to compute the entropy of a an action of homeomorphisms of a Polish space preserving a given measure, also in a manner which uses the topology of the space. We give applications to spectral properties of actions with positive entropy, as well as for actions of completely positive entropy.

Sofic Entropy of Gaussian Actions

Associated to any orthogonal representation of a countable discrete group is an probability measure-preserving action called the Gaussian action. Using the Polish model formalism we developed before, we compute the entropy (in the sense of Bowen, Kerr-Li) of Gaussian actions when the group is sofic. Computations of entropy for Gaussian actions has only been done when the acting group is abelian and thus our results are new even in the amenable case. Fundamental to our approach are methods of noncommutative harmonic analysis and $C^{*}$-algebras which replace the Fourier analysis used in the abelian case.

An l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Representations of Equivalence Relations

In our previous paper, "l^{p}-Version of von Neumann Dimension for Banach Space Representations of Sofic Groups," we define an extended version of von Neumann dimension for actions of a sofic group on a Banach space. This dimension was studied especially for the translation action of G on l^{p}(G), as well as the multiplication on the non-commutative L^{p} space associated with the group von Neumann algebra. We discuss how one can similarly define an extended dimension for representations of an equivalence relation. We also define an analogue of l^{2}-Betti numbers for equivalence relations in the l^{p}-case, this may shed some light on the conjectured relation between cost and first l^{2}-Betti number.

An l^{p}-Version of von-Neumann Dimension For Banach Space Representations of Sofic Groups

A. Gournay defined a notion of $l^{p}$-dimension for subspaces of the l^{q}-left-regular representation of an amenable discrete group. We give an alternative definition that works for sofic groups and a different notion for groups satisfying the Connes embedding conjecture, and for more general representations on Banach spaces. We extend certain results due to Gournay, as well as discuss l^{p}-Betti numbers of Free groups.
