State and Topology Estimation for Unobservable Distribution Systems using Deep Neural Networks

Time-synchronized state estimation for reconfigurable distribution networks is challenging because of limited real-time observability. This paper addresses this challenge by formulating a deep learning (DL)-based approach for topology identification (TI) and unbalanced three-phase distribution system state estimation (DSSE). Two deep neural networks (DNNs) are trained for time-synchronized DNN-based TI and DSSE, respectively, for systems that are incompletely observed by synchrophasor measurement devices (SMDs) in real-time. A data-driven approach for judicious SMD placement to facilitate reliable TI and DSSE is also provided. Robustness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by considering non-Gaussian noise in the SMD measurements. A comparison of the DNN-based DSSE with more conventional approaches indicates that the DL-based approach gives better accuracy with smaller number of SMDs.

Stochastic AC Network-constrained Scheduling of CAES and Wind Power Generation in Joint Energy and reserve market: Toward More Realistic Results

In this paper, a two-stage stochastic day-ahead (DA) scheduling model is proposed incorporating wind power units and compressed air energy storage (CAES) to clear a co-optimized energy and reserve market. The two-stage stochastic programming method is employed to deal with the wind power generation uncertain nature. A linearized AC optimal power flow (LAC-OPF) approach with consideration of network losses, reactive power, and voltage magnitude constraints is utilized in the proposed two-stage stochastic DA scheduling model. Using an engineering insight, a two-level LAC-OPF (TL-LAC-OPF) approach is proposed to (i) reduce the number of binary variables of the LAC-OPF approach which decreases the computational burden, and (ii) obtain LAC-OPF pre-defined parameters adaptively so that the accuracy of LAC-OPF approach is increased as a result of reducing artificial losses. Furthermore, as the CAES efficiency depends on its thermodynamic and operational conditions, the proposed two-stage stochastic DA scheduling model is developed by considering its thermodynamic characteristics to obtain a more realistic market decision at the first place. The proposed model is applied to IEEE 30-bus and 57-bus test systems using GAMS software, and is compared with three traditional approaches, i.e., AC-OPF, DC-OPF, and LAC-OPF. Simulation results demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Time Synchronized State Estimation for Incompletely Observed Distribution Systems Using Deep Learning Considering Realistic Measurement Noise

Time-synchronized state estimation is a challenge for distribution systems because of limited real-time observability. This paper addresses this challenge by formulating a deep learning (DL)-based approach to perform unbalanced three-phase distribution system state estimation (DSSE). Initially, a data-driven approach for judicious measurement selection to facilitate reliable state estimation is provided. Then, a deep neural network (DNN) is trained to perform DSSE for systems that are incompletely observed by synchrophasor measurement devices (SMDs). Robustness of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by considering realistic measurement error models for SMDs. A comparative study of the DNN-based DSSE with classical linear state estimation indicates that the DL-based approach gives better accuracy with a significantly smaller number of SMDs.

A Micro-PMU Placement Scheme for Distribution Systems Considering Practical Constraints

This paper presents an innovative approach to micro-phasor measurement unit (micro-PMU) placement in unbalanced distribution networks. The methodology accounts for the presence of single-and-two-phase laterals and acknowledges the fact that observing one phase in a distribution circuit does not translate to observing the other phases. Other practical constraints such as presence of distributed loads, unknown regulator/ transformer tap ratios, zero-injection phases (ZIPs), modern smart meters, and multiple switch configurations are also incorporated. The proposed micro-PMU placement problem is solved using integer linear programming (ILP), guaranteeing optimality of results. The uniqueness of the developed algorithm is that it not only minimizes the micro-PMU installations, but also identifies the minimum number of phases that must be monitored by them.
