Feynman-Kac formula for perturbations of order ≤1\leq 1 and noncommutative geometry

Let QQ be a differential operator of order ≤1\leq 1 on a complex metric vector bundle E→M\mathscr{E}\to \mathscr{M} with metric connection ∇\nabla over a possibly noncompact Riemannian manifold M\mathscr{M}. Under very mild regularity assumptions on QQ that guarantee that ∇†∇/2+Q\nabla^{\dagger}\nabla/2+Q generates a holomorphic semigroup e−zHQ∇\mathrm{e}^{-zH^{\nabla}_{Q}} in ΓL2(M,E)Γ_{L^2}(\mathscr{M},\mathscr{E}) (where zz runs through a complex sector which contains [0,∞)[0,\infty)), we prove an explicit Feynman-Kac type formula for e−tHQ∇\mathrm{e}^{-tH^{\nabla}_{Q}}, t>0t>0, generalizing the standard self-adjoint theory where QQ is a self-adjoint zeroth order operator. For compact M\mathscr{M}'s we combine this formula with Berezin integration to derive a Feynman-Kac type formula for an operator trace of the form Tr(V~∫0te−sHV∇Pe−(t−s)HV∇ds), \mathrm{Tr}\left(\widetilde{V}\int^t_0\mathrm{e}^{-sH^{\nabla}_{V}}P\mathrm{e}^{-(t-s)H^{\nabla}_{V}}\mathrm{d} s\right), where V,V~V,\widetilde{V} are of zeroth order and PP is of order ≤1\leq 1. These formulae are then used to obtain a probabilistic representations of the lower order terms of the equivariant Chern character (a differential graded extension of the JLO-cocycle) of a compact even-dimensional Riemannian spin manifold, which in combination with cyclic homology play a crucial role in the context of the Duistermaat-Heckmann localization formula on the loop space of such a manifold.

Hölder estimates for magnetic Schrödinger semigroups in Rd\mathbb{R}^{d} from mirror coupling

We use the mirror coupling of Brownian motion to show that under a β∈(0,1)β\in (0,1)-dependent Kato type assumption (which is satisfied under a suitable LqL^q-assumption on the electro-magnetic potential, where qq depends on ββ and the dimension dd) on the possibly nonsmooth electro-magnetic potential, the corresponding magnetic Schrödinger semigroup in R\mathbb{R} has a global LpL^{p}-to-C0,βC^{0,β} Hölder smoothing property for all p∈[1,∞]p\in [1,\infty], in particular all eigenfunctions are uniformly ββ-Hölder continuous. This result shows that the eigenfunctions of the Hamilton operator of a molecule in a magnetic field are uniformly ββ-Hölder continuous under weak LqL^q-assumptions on the magnetic potential.

RCD∗(K,N)\mathrm{RCD}^*(K,N) spaces and the geometry of multi-particle Schrödinger semigroups

With (X,d,m)(X,\mathfrak{d},\mathfrak{m}) an RCD∗(K,N)\mathrm{RCD}^*(K,N) space for some K∈RK\in\mathbf{R}, N∈[1,∞)N\in [1,\infty), let HH be the self-adjoint Laplacian induced by the underlying Cheeger form. Given α∈[0,1]α\in [0,1] we introduce the αα-Kato class of potentials on (X,d,m)(X,\mathfrak{d},\mathfrak{m}), and given a potential V:X→RV:X\to \mathbf{R} in this class, with HVH_V the natural self-adjoint realization of the Schrödinger operator H+VH+V in L2(X,m)L^2(X,\mathfrak{m}), we use Brownian coupling methods and perturbation theory to prove that for all t>0t>0 there exists an explicitly given constant A(V,K,α,t)<∞A(V,K,α,t)<\infty, such that for all Ψ∈L∞(X,m)Ψ\in L^{\infty}(X,\mathfrak{m}), x,y∈Xx,y\in X one has \begin{align*} \big|e^{-tH_V}Ψ(x)-e^{-tH_V}Ψ(y)\big|\leq A(V,K,α,t) \|Ψ\|_{L^{\infty}}\mathfrak{d}(x,y)^α. \end{align*} In particular, all L∞L^{\infty}-eigenfunctions of HVH_V are globally αα-Hölder continuous. This result applies to multi-particle Schrödinger semigroups and, by the explicitness of the Hölder constants, sheds some light into the geometry of such operators.

Molecules as metric measure spaces with Kato-bounded Ricci curvature

Set Ψ:=−log⁡(Ψ~)Ψ:=-\log(\tildeΨ), with Ψ~>0\tildeΨ>0 the ground state of an arbitrary molecule with nn electrons in the infinite mass limit (neglecting spin/statistics). Let $Σ\subset \IR^{3n}$ be the set of singularities of the underlying Coulomb potential. We show that the metric measure space $\IMM$ given by $\IR^{3n}$ with its Euclidean distance and the measure μ(dx)=e−2Ψ(x)dx μ(dx)=e^{-2Ψ(x)}dx has a Bakry-Emery-Ricci tensor which is absolutely bounded by the the function x↦∣x−Σ∣−1x\mapsto |x-Σ|^{-1}, which we show to be an element of the Kato class induced by $\IMM$. In addition, it is shown $\IMM$ is stochastically complete, that is, the Brownian motion which is induced by a molecule is nonexplosive, and that the heat semigroup of $\IMM$ has the L∞L^{\infty}-to-Lipschitz smoothing property. Our proofs reveal a fundamental connection between the above geometric/probabilistic properties and recently obtained derivative estimates for eΨe^Ψ by Fournais/Sørensen, as well as Aizenman/Simon's Harnack inequality for Schrödinger operators. Moreover, our results suggest to study general metric measure spaces having a Ricci curvature which is synthetically bounded from below/above by a function in the underlying Kato class.

Scattering Theory and Spectral Stability under a Ricci Flow for Dirac Operators

Given a noncompact spin manifold MM with a fixed topological spin structure and two complete Riemannian metrics gg and hh on MM with bounded sectional curvatures, we prove a criterion for the existence and completeness of the wave operators W±(Dh,Dg,Ig,h)\mathscr{W}_{\pm}(D_h, D_g, I_{g,h}) and W±(Dh2,Dg2,Ig,h)\mathscr{W}_{\pm}(D_h^2, D^2_g, I_{g,h}), where Ig,hI_{g,h} is the canonically given unitary map between the underlying L2L^2-spaces of spinors. This criterion does not involve any injectivity radius assumptions and leads to a criterion for the stability of the absolutely continuous spectrum of a Dirac operator and its square under a Ricci flow.

Heat kernel estimates and the relative compactness of perturbations by potentials

We consider a self-adjoint non-negative operator HH in a Hilbert space L2(X,dμ)\mathsf{L}^2(X,{\rm d}μ). We assume that the semigroup (e−tH)t>0(\mathrm{e}^{-t H})_{t>0} is defined by an integral kernel, pp, which allows an estimate of the form p(t,x,x)≤F1(x)F2(t)p(t,x,x)\le F_1(x)F_2(t) for all (x,t)∈X×R+(x,t)\in X\times\mathbb{R_+}; we refer to F1F_1 as the \emph{control function}. We show that such an estimate leads to rather satisfying abstract results on relative compactness of perturbations of HH by potentials. It came as a surprise to us, however, that such an estimate holds for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on \emph{any} Riemannian manifold. In particular, using a domination principle, one can deduce from the latter fact a very general result on the relative compactness of perturbations by potentials of the Bochner Laplacian associated with a Hermitian bundle (E,hE,∇E)(E, h^E,\nabla^E) over an arbitrary Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g); in fact, only quantities of order zero in gg enter in the estimates. We extend this result to weighted Riemannian manifolds, where under lower curvature bounds on the αα-Bakry-Émery tensor one can construct quite explicit control functions, and to any weighted graph, where the control function is expressed in terms of the vertex weight function.

Heat kernels in the context of Kato potentials on arbitrary manifolds

By introducing the concept of \emph{Kato control pairs} for a given Riemannian minimal heat kernel, we prove that on every Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g) the Kato class K(M,g)\mathcal{K}(M,g) has a subspace of the form Lq(M,dϱ)\mathsf{L}^q(M,d\varrho), where ϱ\varrho has a continuous density with respect to the volume measure μgμ_g (where qq depends on dim⁡(M)\dim(M)). Using a local parabolic L1\mathsf{L}^1-mean value inequality, we prove the existence of such densities for every Riemannian manifold, which in particular implies Llocq(M)⊂Kloc(M,g)\mathsf{L}^q_{loc}(M)\subset\mathcal{K}_{loc}(M,g). Based on previously established results, the latter local fact can be applied to the question of essential self-adjointness of Schrödinger operators with singular magnetic and electric potentials. Finally, we also provide a Kato criterion in terms of minimal Riemannian submersions.

On the semimartingale property of Brownian bridges on complete manifolds

I prove that every adapted Brownian bridge on a geodesically complete connected Riemannian manifold is a semimartingale including its terminal time, without any further assumptions on the geometry. In particular, it follows that every such process can be horizontally lifted to a smooth principal fiber bundle with connection, including its terminal time. The proof is based on a localized Hamilton-type gradient estimate by Arnaudon/Thalmaier.

Stochastic differential equations for models of non-relativistic matter interacting with quantized radiation fields

We discuss Hilbert space-valued stochastic differential equations associated with the heat semi-groups of the standard model of non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics and of corresponding fiber Hamiltonians for translation invariant systems. In particular, we prove the existence of a stochastic flow satisfying the strong Markov property and the Feller property. To this end we employ an explicit solution ansatz. In the matrix-valued case, i.e., if the electron spin is taken into account, it is given by a series of operator-valued time-ordered integrals, whose integrands are factorized into annihilation, preservation, creation, and scalar parts. The Feynman-Kac formula implied by these results is new in the matrix-valued case. Furthermore, we discuss stochastic differential equations and Feynman-Kac representations for an operator-valued integral kernel of the semi-group. As a byproduct we obtain analogous results for Nelson's model.

A Feynman-Kac-Itô Formula for magnetic Schrödinger operators on graphs

In this paper we prove a Feynman-Kac-Itô formula for magnetic Schrödinger operators on arbitrary weighted graphs. To do so, we have to provide a natural and general framework both on the operator theoretic and the probabilistic side of the equation. On the operator side we identify a very general class of potentials that allows the definition of magnetic Schrödinger operators. On the probabilistic side, we introduce an appropriate notion of stochastic line integrals with respect to magnetic potentials. Apart from linking the world of discrete magnetic operators with the probabilistic world through the Feynman-Kac-Itô formula, the insights from this paper gained on both sides should be of an independent interest. As applications of the Feynman-Kac-Itô formula, we prove a Kato inequality, a Golden-Thompson inequality and an explicit representation of the quadratic form domains corresponding to a large class of potentials.

Scattering theory of the Hodge-Laplacian under a conformal perturbation

Let gg and g~\tilde{g} be Riemannian metrics on a noncompact manifold MM, which are conformally equivalent. We show that under a very mild \emph{first order} control on the conformal factor, the wave operators corresponding to the Hodge-Laplacians ΔgΔ_g and Δg~Δ_{\tilde{g}} acting on differential forms exist and are complete. We apply this result to Riemannian manifolds with a bounded geometry and more specifically, to warped product Riemannian manifolds with a bounded geometry. Finally, we combine our results with some explicit calculations by Antoci to determine the absolutely continuous spectrum of the Hodge-Laplacian on jj-forms for a large class of warped product metrics.

L1\mathsf{L}^1-elliptic regularity and H=WH=W on the whole Lp\mathsf{L}^p-scale on arbitrary manifolds

We define abstract Sobolev type spaces on Lp\mathsf{L}^p-scales, p∈[1,∞)p\in [1,\infty), on Hermitian vector bundles over possibly noncompact manifolds, which are induced by smooth measures and families P\mathfrak{P} of linear partial differential operators, and we prove the density of the corresponding smooth Sobolev sections in these spaces under a generalized ellipticity condition on the underlying family. In particular, this implies a covariant version of Meyers-Serrin\rq{}s theorem on the whole Lp\mathsf{L}^p-scale, for arbitrary Riemannian manifolds. Furthermore, we prove a new local elliptic regularity result in L1\mathsf{L}^1 on the Besov scale, which shows that the above generalized ellipticity condition is satisfied on the whole Lp\mathsf{L}^p-scale, if some differential operator from P\mathfrak{P} that has a sufficiently high (but not necessarily the highest) order is elliptic.

Semiclassical limits of quantum partition functions on infinite graphs

We prove that if HH denotes the operator corresponding to the canonical Dirichlet form on a possibly locally infinite weighted graph (X,b,m)(X,b,m), and if v:X→Rv:X\to \mathbb{R} is such that H+v/ℏH+v/\hbar is well-defined as a form sum for all ℏ>0\hbar >0, then the quantum partition function tr(e−βℏ(H+v/ℏ))\mathrm{tr}(\mathrm{e}^{-β\hbar ( H + v/\hbar)}) satisfies tr(e−βℏ(H+v/ℏ))→ℏ→0+∑x∈Xe−βv(x) for all β>0, \mathrm{tr}(\mathrm{e}^{-β\hbar ( H + v/\hbar)})\xrightarrow[]{\hbar\to 0+}\sum_{x\in X} \mathrm{e}^{-βv(x)} \text{ for all $β>0$}, regardless of the fact whether e−βv\mathrm{e}^{-βv} is apriori summable or not. We also prove natural generalizations of this semiclassical limit to a large class of covariant Schrödinger operators that act on sections in Hermitian vector bundle over (X,m,b)(X,m,b), a result that particularly applies to magnetic Schrödinger operators that are defined on (X,m,b)(X,m,b).

Sequences of Laplacian cut-off functions

We derive several new applications of the concept of sequences of Laplacian cut-off functions on Riemannian manifolds (which we prove to exist on geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature): In particular, we prove that this existence implies Lq\mathsf{L}^q-estimates of the gradient, a new density result of smooth compactly supported functions in Sobolev spaces on the whole Lq\mathsf{L}^q-scale, and a slightly weaker and slightly stronger variant of the conjecture of Braverman, Milatovic and Shubin on the nonnegativity of L2\mathsf{L}^2-solutions ff of (−Δ+1)f≥0(-Δ+1)f\geq 0. The latter fact is proved within a new notion of positivity preservation for Riemannian manifolds which is related to stochastic completeness.

The Calderón-Zygmund inequality and Sobolev spaces on noncompact Riemannian manifolds

We introduce the concept of Calderón-Zygmund inequalities on Riemannian manifolds. For 1<p<∞1<p<\infty, these are inequalities of the form ∥Hess(u)∥Lp≤C1∥u∥Lp+C2∥Δu∥Lp, \left\Vert \mathrm{Hess}\left( u\right) \right\Vert _{L^p}\leq C_{1}\left\Vert u\right\Vert _{L^p}+C_{2}\left\Vert Δu\right\Vert _{L^p}, valid a priori for all smooth functions uu with compact support, and constants C1≥0C_1\geq 0, C2>0C_2>0. Such an inequality can hold or fail, depending on the underlying Riemannian geometry. After establishing some generally valid facts and consequences of the Calderón-Zygmund inequality (like new denseness results for second order Lp\mathsf{L}^p-Sobolev spaces and gradient estimates), we establish sufficient geometric criteria for the validity of these inequalities on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds. These results in particular apply to many noncompact hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature.

Functions with bounded variation on a class of Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature unbounded from below

After establishing some new global facts (like a measure theoretic structure theorem and approximation results) about complex-valued functions with bounded variation on arbitrary noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we extend results of Miranda/the second author/Paronetto/Preunkert and of Carbonaro/Mauceri on the heat semigroup characterization of the variation of L^1-functions to a class of Riemannian manifolds with possibly unbounded from below Ricci curvature.

On generalized Schrödinger semigroups

We extend the Feynman-Kac formula for Schrödinger type operators on vector bundles over noncompact Riemannian manifolds to possibly very singular potentials that appear in hydrogen like quantum mechanical problems and that need not be bounded from below or locally square integrable. This path integral formula is then used to prove several L^p-type results, like bounds on the ground state energy and L^2 -> L^p smoothing properties of the corresponding Schrödinger semigroups. As another main result, we will prove that with a little control on the Riemannian structure, the latter semigroups are also L^2->{bounded continuous} smoothing for Kato decomposable potentials. These results in particular apply to a very general class of magnetic Schrödinger operators on Riemannian manifolds.

Path integrals and the essential self-adjointness of differential operators on noncompact manifolds

We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifolds.

Kato's inequality and form boundedness of Kato potentials on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds

Let (M,g)(M,g) be a Riemannian manifold with Laplace-Beltrami operator −Δ-Δ and let E→ME\to M be a Hermitian vector bundle with a Hermitian covariant derivative ∇\nabla. Furthermore, let H(0) denote the Friedrichs realization of ∇∗∇\nabla^*\nabla and let VV be a potential. We prove that V−V^- is H(0)-form bounded with bound <1<1, if the function max⁡σ(V−)\maxσ(V^-) is in the Kato class of (M,g)(M,g). In particular, this gives a sufficient condition under which one can define the form sum H(V):=H(0)∔VH(V):=H(0)\dotplus V on arbitrary Riemannian manifolds.

Multiplicative matrix-valued functionals and the continuity properties of semigroups correspondings to partial differential operators with matrix-valued coefficients

We define and examine certain matrix-valued multiplicative functionals with local Kato potential terms and use probabilistic techniques to prove that the semigroups of the corresponding partial differential operators with matrix-valued coefficients are spatially continuous and have a jointly continuous integral kernel. These partial differential operators include Yang-Mills type Hamiltonians and Pauli type Hamiltonians, with "electrical" potentials that are elements of the matrix-valued local Kato class.
