Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid state. One of the front-runners is BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co$^{2+}$ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering studies of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type \JKG model and the \XXZ model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the \XXZ model but not by the \JKG model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Magnetic Pair Distribution Function Data Using Polarized Neutrons and ad hoc Corrections

We report the first example of magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) data obtained through use of neutron polarization analysis. Using the antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe as a test case, we present high-quality mPDF data collected on the HYSPEC instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source using longitudinal polarization analysis to isolate the magnetic scattering cross section. Clean mPDF patterns are obtained for MnTe in both the magnetically ordered state and the correlated paramagnet state, where only short-range magnetic order is present. We also demonstrate significant improvement in the quality of high-resolution mPDF data through application of ad hoc corrections that require only minimal human input, minimizing potential sources of error in the data processing procedure. We briefly discuss the current limitations and future outlook of mPDF analysis using polarized neutrons. Overall, this work provides a useful benchmark for mPDF analysis using polarized neutrons and provides an encouraging picture of the potential for routine collection of high-quality mPDF data.

The generalized quasiharmonic approximation via space group irreducible derivatives

The quasiharmonic approximation (QHA) is the simplest nontrivial approximation for interacting phonons under constant pressure, bringing the effects of anharmonicity into temperature dependent observables. Nonetheless, the QHA is often implemented with additional approximations due to the complexity of computing phonons under arbitrary strains, and the generalized QHA, which employs constant stress boundary conditions, has not been completely developed. Here we formulate the generalized QHA, providing a practical algorithm for computing the strain state and other observables as a function of temperature and true stress. We circumvent the complexity of computing phonons under arbitrary strains by employing irreducible second order displacement derivatives of the Born-Oppenheimer potential and their strain dependence, which are efficiently and precisely computed using the lone irreducible derivative approach. We formulate two complementary strain parametrizations: a discretized strain grid interpolation and a Taylor series expansion in symmetrized strain. We illustrate our approach by evaluating the temperature and pressure dependence of the elastic constant tensor and the thermal expansion in thoria (ThO$_2$) using density functional theory with three exchange-correlation functionals. The QHA results are compared to our measurements of the elastic constant tensor using time domain Brillouin scattering and inelastic neutron scattering. Our irreducible derivative approach simplifies the implementation of the generalized QHA, which will facilitate reproducible, data driven applications.

Spin dynamics and a nearly continuous magnetic phase transition in an entropy-stabilized oxide antiferromagnet

The magnetic order and the spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic entropy-stabilized oxide (Mg$_{0.2}$Co$_{0.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Cu$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.2}$)O (MgO-ESO) have been studied using muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering. We find that antiferromagnetic order develops gradually in the sample volume as it is cooled below 140 K, becoming fully ordered around 100 K. The spin dynamics show a critical slowing down in the vicinity of the transition, and the magnetic order parameter grows continuously in the ordered state. These results indicate that the antiferromagnetic transition is continuous but proceeds with a Gaussian distribution of ordering temperatures. The magnetic contribution to the specific heat determined from inelastic neutron scattering likewise shows a broad feature centered around 120 K. High-resolution inelastic neutron scattering further reveals an initially gapped spectrum at low temperature which sees an increase in a quasielastic contribution upon heating until the ordering temperature.

"Forbidden" phonon: dynamical signature of bond symmetry breaking in the iron chalcogenides

Investigation of the inelastic neutron scattering spectra in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ near a signature wave vector $\mathbf{Q} = (1,0,0)$ for the bond-order wave (BOW) formation of parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 187202 (2014)] reveals an acoustic-phonon-like dispersion present in all structural phases. While a structural Bragg peak accompanies the mode in the low-temperature phase of Fe$_{1+y}$Te, it is absent in the high-temperature tetragonal phase, where Bragg scattering at this $\mathbf{Q}$ is forbidden by symmetry. Notably, this mode is also observed in superconducting FeTe$_{0.55}$Se$_{0.45}$, where structural and magnetic transitions are suppressed, and no BOW has been observed. The presence of this "forbidden" phonon indicates that the lattice symmetry is dynamically or locally broken by magneto-orbital BOW fluctuations, which are strongly coupled to lattice in these materials.

MCViNE -- An object oriented Monte Carlo neutron ray tracing simulation package

MCViNE (Monte-Carlo VIrtual Neutron Experiment) is a versatile Monte Carlo (MC) neutron ray-tracing program that provides researchers with tools for performing computer modeling and simulations that mirror real neutron scattering experiments. By adopting modern software engineering practices such as using composite and visitor design patterns for representing and accessing neutron scatterers, and using recursive algorithms for multiple scattering, MCViNE is flexible enough to handle sophisticated neutron scattering problems including, for example, neutron detection by complex detector systems, and single and multiple scattering events in a variety of samples and sample environments. In addition, MCViNE can take advantage of simulation components in linear-chain-based MC ray tracing packages widely used in instrument design and optimization, as well as NumPy-based components that make prototypes useful and easy to develop. These developments have enabled us to carry out detailed simulations of neutron scattering experiments with non-trivial samples in time-of-flight inelastic instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source. Examples of such simulations for powder and single-crystal samples with various scattering kernels, including kernels for phonon and magnon scattering, are presented. With simulations that closely reproduce experimental results, scattering mechanisms can be turned on and off to determine how they contribute to the measured scattering intensities, improving our understanding of the underlying physics.

Doping influence of spin dynamics and magnetoelectric effect in hexagonal Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves and their correlation with the magnetoelectric effect in Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. In the undoped YMnO$_3$ and LuMnO$_3$, the Mn trimerization distortion has been suggested to play a key role in determining the magnetic structure and the magnetoelectric effect. In Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$, we find a much smaller in-plane (hexagonal $ab$-plane) single ion anisotropy gap that coincides with a weaker in-plane dielectric anomaly at $T_N$. Since both the smaller in-plane anisotropy gap and the weaker in-plane dielectric anomaly are coupled to a weaker Mn trimerization distortion in Y$_{0.7}$Lu$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ comparing to YMnO$_3$ and LuMnO$_3$, we conclude that the Mn trimerization is responsible for the magnetoelectric effect and multiferroic phenomenon in Y$_{1-y}$Lu$_{y}$MnO$_{3}$.
