A Universal Upper Bound on the Pressure-to-Energy Density Ratio in Neutron Stars

The equation-of-state (EOS) parameter $ϕ\equiv P/\varepsilon$, defined as the ratio of pressure to energy density, encapsulates the fundamental response of matter under extreme compression. Its value at the center of the most massive neutron star (NS), $\x \equiv ϕ_{\rm c} = P_{\rm c}/\varepsilon_{\rm c}$, sets a universal upper bound on the maximum denseness attainable by any form of visible matter anywhere in the Universe. Remarkably, owing to the intrinsically nonlinear structure of the EOS in General Relativity (GR), this bound is forced to lie far below the naive Special Relativity (SR) limit of unity. In this work, we refine the theoretical upper bound on $\x$ in a self-consistent manner by incorporating, in addition to the causality constraint from SR, the mass-sphere stability condition associated with the mass evolution pattern in the vicinity of the NS center. This condition is formulated within the intrinsic-and-perturbative analysis of the dimensionless Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff equations (IPAD-TOV) framework. The combined constraints yield an improved bound, $\x \lesssim 0.385$, which is slightly above but fully consistent with the previously derived causal-only limit, $\x \lesssim 0.374$. We further derive an improved scaling relation for NS compactness and verify its universality across a broad set of 284 realistic EOSs, including models with first-order phase transitions, exotic degrees of freedom, continuous crossover behavior, and deconfined quark cores. The resulting bound on $\x$ thus provides a new, EOS-independent window into the microphysics of cold superdense matter compressed by strong-field gravity in GR.

Is The Trace Anomaly at its Minimum Value at Neutron Star Centers?

While the equation of state (EOS) $P(\varepsilon)$ of neutron star (NS) matter has been extensively studied, the EOS-parameter $ϕ= P/\varepsilon$ or equivalently the dimensionless trace anomaly $Δ= 1/3 - ϕ$, which quantifies the balance between pressure $P$ and energy density $\varepsilon$, remains far less explored, especially in NS cores. Its bounds and density profile carry crucial information about the nature of superdense matter. Physically, the EOS-parameter $ϕ$ represents the mean stiffness of matter accumulated from the stellar surface up to a given density. Based on the intrinsic structure of the Tolman--Oppenheimer--Volkoff equations, we show that $ϕ$ decreases monotonically outward from the NS center, independent of any specific input NS EOS model. Furthermore, observational evidence of a peak in the speed-of-sound squared (SSS) density-profile near the center effectively rules out a valley and a subsequent peak in the radial profile of $ϕ$ at similar densities, reinforcing its monotonic decrease. These model-independent relations impose strong constraints on the near-center behavior of the EOS-parameter $ϕ$, particularly demonstrating that the mean stiffness (or equivalently $Δ$) reaches a local maximum (minimum) at the center.

Effects of isoscalar- and isovector-scalar meson mixing on neutron star structure

Based on the accurately calibrated interaction FSUGold, we show that including isovector scalar $δ$ meson and its coupling to isoscalar scalar $σ$ meson in the relativistic mean field (RMF) model can soften the symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(n)$ at intermediate densities while stiffen the $E_{\rm{sym}}(n)$ at high densities. We find this new RMF model can be simultaneously compatible with (1) the constraints on the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter at suprasaturation densities from flow data in heavy-ion collisions, (2) the neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb from the PREX-II experiment, (3) the largest mass of neutron star (NS) reported so far from PSR J0740+6620, (4) the limit of $Λ_{1.4}\leq580$ for the dimensionless tidal deformability of the canonical 1.4$M_{\odot}$ NS from the gravitational wave signal GW170817, (5) the mass-radius relation of PSR J0030+0451 and PSR J0740+6620 measured by NICER, and thus remove the tension between PREX-II and GW170817 observed in the conventional RMF model.

Equation of State of Neutron-Rich Matter in $d$-Dimensions

Nuclear systems under constraints, with high degrees of symmetries and/or collectivities may be considered as moving effectively in spaces with reduced spatial dimensions. We first derive analytical expressions for the nucleon specific energy $E_0(ρ)$, pressure $P_0(ρ)$, incompressibility coefficient $K_0(ρ)$ and skewness coefficient $J_0(ρ)$ of symmetric nucleonic matter (SNM), the quadratic symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$, its slope parameter $L(ρ)$ and curvature coefficient $K_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ as well as the fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym,4}}(ρ)$ of neutron-rich matter in general $d$ spatial dimensions (abbreviated as "$d$D") in terms of the isoscalar and isovector parts of the isospin-dependent single-nucleon potential according to the generalized Hugenholtz-Van Hove (HVH) theorem. The equation of state (EOS) of nuclear matter in $d$D can be linked to that in the conventional 3-dimensional (3D) space by the $ε$-expansion which is a perturbative approach successfully used previously in treating second-order phase transitions and related critical phenomena and more recently in studying the EOS of cold atoms. The $ε$-expansion of nuclear EOS in $d$D based on a reference dimension $d_{\rm{f}}=d-ε$ is shown to be effective with $-1\lesssimε\lesssim1$ starting from $1\lesssim d_{\rm{f}}\lesssim3$ in comparison with the exact expressions derived using the HVH theorem. Moreover, the EOS of SNM (with/without considering its potential part) is found to be reduced (enhanced) in lower (higher) dimensions, indicating in particular that the many-nucleon system tends to be deeper bounded but saturate at higher densities in spaces with lower dimensions. The links between the EOSs in 3D and $d$D spaces from the $ε$-expansion provide new perspectives to the EOS of neutron-rich matter.

Investigating Effects of Relativistic Kinematics, Dimensionality, Interactions, and Short-Range Correlations on the Ratio of Quartic over Quadratic Nuclear Symmetry Energies

While ample evidence for the so-called empirical parabolic law of the Equation of State (EOS) of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter (ANM) has been obtained in many studies within both non-relativistic and relativistic nuclear many-body theories using various interactions, it has been unclear if there is any fundamental physics reason for the small quartic symmetry energy compared to the quadratic one even as the ANM approaches pure neutron matter. Within both relativistic and non-relativistic Free Fermi Gas (FFG) models in coordinate spaces of arbitrary dimension $d$ with and without considering Short-Range Correlations (SRC) as well as non-linear Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) models, we study effects of relativistic kinematics, dimensionality, interactions and SRC on the ratio $Ψ(ρ)$ of quartic over quadratic symmetry energies in ANM EOSs. We found that the ratio $Ψ(ρ)$ in the FFG model depends strongly on the dimension $d$. While it is very small already in the normal 3D space, it could be even smaller in spaces with reduced dimensions for sub-systems of particles in heavy-ion reactions and/or whole neutron stars due to constraints, collectivities and/or symmetries. We also found that the ratio $Ψ(ρ)$ could theoretically become very large only at the ultra-relativistic limit far above the density reachable in neutron stars. On the other hand, nuclear interaction directly and/or indirectly through SRC-induced high-momentum nucleons affect significantly the density dependence of $Ψ(ρ)$ compared to the relativistic FFG model prediction. The SRC affects significantly not only the kinetic energy of symmetric nuclear matter but also the ratio $Ψ(ρ)$ while the relativistic corrections are found negligible. The results may help better understand the EOS of dense neutron-rich matter.

Isospin dependence of nucleon effective masses in neutron-rich matter

In this talk, we first briefly review the isospin dependence of the total nucleon effective mass $M^{\ast}_{J}$ inferred from analyzing nucleon-nucleus scattering data within an isospin dependent non-relativistic optical potential model, and the isospin dependence of the nucleon E-mass $M^{\ast,\rm{E}}_{J}$ obtained from applying the Migdal-Luttinger theorem to a phenomenological single-nucleon momentum distribution in nuclei constrained by recent electron-nucleus scattering experiments. Combining information about the isospin dependence of both the nucleon total effective mass and E-mass, we then infer the isospin dependence of nucleon k-mass using the well-known relation $M^{\ast}_{J}=M^{\ast,\rm{E}}_{J}\cdot M^{\ast,\rm{k}}_{J}$. Implications of the results on the nucleon mean free path (MFP) in neutron-rich matter are discussed.

Nucleon Effective E-Mass in Neutron-Rich Matter from the Migdal-Luttinger Jump

The well-known Migdal-Luttinger theorem states that the jump of the single-nucleon momentum distribution at the Fermi surface is equal to the inverse of the nucleon effective E-mass. Recent experiments studying short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei using electron-nucleus scatterings at the Jefferson National Laboratory (JLAB) together with model calculations constrained significantly the Migdal-Luttinger jump at saturation density of nuclear matter. We show that the corresponding nucleon effective E-mass is consequently constrained to $M_0^{\ast,\rm{E}}/M\approx2.22\pm0.35$ in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and the E-mass of neutrons is smaller than that of protons in neutron-rich matter. Moreover, the average depletion of the nucleon Fermi sea increases (decreases) approximately linearly with the isospin asymmetry $δ$ according to $κ_{\rm{p}/\rm{n}}\approx 0.21\pm0.06 \pm (0.19\pm0.08)δ$ for protons (neutrons). These results will help improve our knowledge about the space-time non-locality of the single-nucleon potential in neutron-rich nucleonic matter useful in both nuclear physics and astrophysics.

Proton-skins in momentum space and neutron-skins in coordinate space in heavy nuclei

Neutron-skins in coordinate space and proton-skins in momentum space are predicted to coexist in heavy nuclei and their correlation is governed by Liouville's theorem and Heisenberg's uncertainty principle. An analysis of their correlation within a further extended Thomas-Fermi (ETF$^+$) approximation incorporating effects of nucleon short-range correlations reveals generally that protons move faster than neutrons in neutron-skins of heavy nuclei.

Symmetry energy of cold nucleonic matter within a relativistic mean field model encapsulating effects of high momentum nucleons induced by short-range correlations

Significant progress has been made recently in constraining the isospin-dependent parameters characterizing the SRC (short-range correlation)-modified single-nucleon momentum distribution in neutron-rich nucleonic matter using both experimental data and microscopic model calculations. Using the constrained single-nucleon momentum distribution in a nonlinear relativistic mean field (RMF) model, we study the equation of state (EOS) of asymmetric nucleonic matter (ANM), especially the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$. Firstly, as a test of the model, the average nucleon kinetic energy extracted recently from electron-nucleus scattering experiments using a neutron-proton dominance model is well reproduced by the RMF model incorporating effects of the SRC-induced high momentum nucleons, while it is significantly under predicted by the RMF model using a step function for the single-nucleon momentum distribution as in free Fermi gas (FFG) models. Secondly, the kinetic symmetry energy of quasi-nucleons is found to be $E^{\rm{kin}}_{\rm{sym}}(ρ_0)=-16.94\pm13.66\,\rm{MeV}$ which is dramatically different from the prediction of $E^{\rm{kin}}_{\rm{sym}}(ρ_0)\approx 12.5$ MeV by FFG models at nuclear matter saturation density $ρ_0=0.16\,\rm{fm}^{-3}$. Thirdly, comparing the RMF calculations with and without the high momentum nucleons using two sets of model parameters both reproducing identically all empirically constraints on the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and the symmetry energy of ANM at $ρ_0$, the SRC-modified single-nucleon momentum distribution is found to make the $E_{\rm{sym}}(ρ)$ more concave around $ρ_0$ by softening it significantly at both sub-saturation and supra-saturation densities, leading to an isospin-dependent incompressibility of ANM in better agreement with existing experimental data.

Critical Density and Impact of $Δ(1232)$ Resonance Formation in Neutron Stars

The critical densities and impact of forming \D resonances in neutron stars are investigated within an extended nonlinear relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The critical densities for the formation of four different charge states of \D are found to depend differently on the separate kinetic and potential parts of nuclear symmetry energy, the first example of a microphysical property of neutron stars to do so. Moreover, they are sensitive to the in-medium Delta mass $m_Δ$ and the completely unknown $Δ$-$ρ$ coupling strength $g_{ρΔ}$. In the universal baryon-meson coupling scheme where the respective $Δ$-meson and nucleon-meson coupling constants are assumed to be the same, the critical density for the first $Δ^-(1232)$ to appear is found to be \rc=$(2.08\pm0.02)ρ_0$ using RMF model parameters consistent with current constraints on all seven macroscopic parameters usually used to characterize the equation of state (EoS) of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter (ANM) at saturation density $ρ_0$. Moreover, the composition and the mass-radius relation of neutron stars are found to depend significantly on the values of the $g_{ρΔ}$ and $m_Δ$.

The isospin quartic term in the kinetic energy of neutron-rich nucleonic matter

The energy of a free gas of neutrons and protons is well known to be approximately isospin parabolic with a negligibly small quartic term of only $0.45$ MeV at the saturation density of nuclear matter $ρ_0=0.16/\rm{fm}^3$. Using an isospin-dependent single-nucleon momentum distribution including a high (low) momentum tail (depletion) with its shape parameters constrained by recent high-energy electron scattering and medium-energy nuclear photodisintegration experiments as well as the state-of-the-art calculations of the deuteron wave function and the equation of state of pure neutron matter near the unitary limit within several modern microscopic many-body theories, we show for the first time that the kinetic energy of interacting nucleons in neutron-rich nucleonic matter has a significant quartic term of $7.18\pm2.52\,\rm{MeV}$. Such a large quartic term has significant ramifications in determining the equation of state of neutron-rich nucleonic matter using both terrestrial and astrophysical observables.

Extracting the nuclear symmetry potential and energy from neutron-nucleus scattering data

According to the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, the symmetry energy and its density slope can be decomposed uniquely in terms of the single-nucleon potential in asymmetric nuclear matter which, at normal density, can be constrained by the nucleon optical model potential extracted from analyzing the nucleon-nucleus scattering data. To more accurately extract information on the symmetry energy and its density slope at normal density from neutron-nucleus scattering data, going beyond the well-known Lane potential, we include consistently the second order terms in isospin asymmetry in both the optical model potential and the symmetry energy decomposition. We find that the strength of the second-order symmetry potential $U_{sym,2}$ in asymmetric nuclear matter is significant compared to the first-order one U_{sym,1}$, especially at high nucleon momentum. While the $U_{sym,1}$ at normal density decreases with nucleon momentum, the $U_{sym,2}$ is found to have the opposite behavior. Moreover, we discuss effects of the $U_{sym,1}$ and $U_{sym,2}$ on determining the density dependence of the symmetry energy, and we find that the available neutron-nucleus scattering data favor a softer density dependence of the symmetry energy at normal density with a negligible contribution from the $U_{sym,2}$.

Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energy decomposition of the nuclear symmetry energy

Using the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, we derive analytical expressions for the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ in terms of the Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energies in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. These general expressions are useful for determining the density dependence of the symmetry energy and understanding the Lorentz structure and the microscopic origin of the nuclear symmetry energy in relativistic covariant formulism. As an example, we analyze the Lorentz covariant nucleon self-energy decomposition of $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and $L(ρ)$ and derive the corresponding analytical expressions within the nonlinear $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$-$δ$ relativistic mean field model.

Nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy in the relativistic mean field models

Within the nonlinear relativistic mean field model, we derive the analytical expression of the nuclear matter fourth-order symmetry energy $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$. Based on two accurately calibrated interactions FSUGold and IU-FSU, our results show that the value of $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ at normal nuclear matter density $ρ_{0}$ is generally less than 1 MeV, confirming the empirical parabolic approximation to the equation of state for asymmetric nuclear matter at $ρ_{0}$. On the other hand, we find that the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ may become nonnegligible at high densities. Furthermore, the analytical form of the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ provides the possibility to study the higher-order effects on the isobaric incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter, i.e., $K_{sat}(δ)=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+\mathcal{O}(δ^{6})$ where $δ=(ρ_{n}-ρ_{p})/ρ$ is the isospin asymmetry, and we find that the value of $K_{sat,4}$ is generally small compared with that of the $K_{sat,2}$. In addition, we study the effects of the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ on the proton fraction $x_{p}$ and the core-crust transition density $ρ_{t}$ and pressure $P_{t}$ in neutron stars. Interestingly, we find that, compared with the results from the empirical parabolic approximation, including the $E_{sym,4}(ρ)$ contribution can significantly enhance the $x_{p}$ at high densities and strongly reduce the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ in neutron stars, demonstrating that the widely used empirical parabolic approximation may cause large errors in determining the $x_{p}$ at high densities as well as the $ρ_{t}$ and $P_{t}$ in neutron stars within the nonlinear relativistic mean field model, consistent with previous nonrelativistic calculations.

Single-nucleon potential decomposition of the nuclear symmetry energy

The nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and its density slope $L(ρ)$ can be decomposed analytically in terms of the single-nucleon potential in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter. Using three popular nuclear effective interaction models which have been extensively used in nuclear structure and reaction studies, namely, the isospin and momentum dependent MDI interaction model, the Skyrme Hartree-Fock approach and the Gogny Hartree-Fock approach, we analyze the contribution of different terms in the single-nucleon potential to the $E_{sym}(ρ)$ and $L(ρ)$. Our results show that the observed different density behaviors of $E_{sym}(ρ)$ for different interactions are essentially due to the variation of the symmetry potential $U_{sym,1}(ρ,k)$. Furthermore, we find that the contribution of the second-order symmetry potential $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ to the $L(ρ)$ generally cannot be neglected. Moreover, our results demonstrate that the magnitude of the $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ is generally comparable with that of $U_{sym,1}(ρ,k)$, indicating the second-order symmetry potential $U_{sym,2}(ρ,k)$ may have significant corrections to the widely used Lane approximation to the single-nucleon potential in extremely neutron(proton)-rich nuclear matter.

preprint2009arXiv

Incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter

The incompressibility $K_sat(δ)$ of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density. Our results show that in the expansion of $K_sat(δ)$ in powers of isospin asymmetry $δ$, i.e., $K_sat(δ)$=K_{0}+K_{sat,2}δ^{2}+K_{sat,4}δ^{4}+O(δ^{6})$, the magnitude of the 4th-order K_{sat,4} parameter is generally small. The 2nd-order K_{sat,2} parameter thus essentially characterizes the isospin dependence of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at saturation density. Furthermore, the K_{sat,2} can be expressed as K_{sat,2}=K_{sym}-6L-J_{0}/{K_{0}L in terms of the slope parameter $L$ and the curvature parameter $K_{\mathrm{sym}}$ of the symmetry energy and the third-order derivative parameter $J_0$ of the energy of symmetric nuclear matter at saturation density, and we find the higher order $J_0$ contribution to K_{sat,2} generally cannot be neglected. Also, we have found a linear correlation between K_{sym} and $L$ as well as between $J_{0}/K_{0}$ and $K_{0}$. Using these correlations together with the empirical constraints on $K_{0}$ and $L$, the nuclear symmetry energy $E_sym(ρ_{0})$ at normal nuclear density, and the nucleon effective mass, we have obtained an estimated value of K_{sat,2}=-370 +- 120 MeV for the 2nd-order parameter in the isospin asymmetry expansion of the incompressibility of asymmetric nuclear matter at its saturation density.
