$C^\ast$-extreme maps and nests

The generalized state space $ S_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathcal{\mathcal{A}})$ of all unital completely positive (UCP) maps on a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$ taking values in the algebra $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, is a $C^\ast$-convex set. In this paper, we establish a connection between $C^\ast$-extreme points of $S_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathcal{A})$ and a factorization property of certain algebras associated to the UCP map. In particular, this factorization property of some nest algebras is used to give a complete characterization of those $C^\ast$-extreme maps which are direct sums of pure UCP maps. This significantly extends a result of Farenick and Zhou [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 126 (1998)] from finite to infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. Also it is shown that normal $C^\ast$-extreme maps on type $I$ factors are direct sums of normal pure UCP maps if and only if an associated algebra is reflexive. Further, a Krein-Milman type theorem is established for $C^\ast$-convexity of the set $ S_{\mathcal{H}}(\mathcal{A})$ equipped with bounded weak topology, whenever $\mathcal{A}$ is a separable $C^\ast$-algebra or it is a type $I$ factor. As an application, we provide a new proof of a classical factorization result on operator valued Hardy algebras.

Poisson boundary on full Fock space

This article is devoted to studying the non-commutative Poisson boundary associated with $\Big(B\big(\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})\big), P_ω\Big)$ where $\mathcal{H}$ is a separable Hilbert space (finite or infinite-dimensional), $\dim \mathcal{H} > 1$, with an orthonormal basis $\mathcal{E}$, $B\big(\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})\big)$ is the algebra of bounded linear operators on the full Fock space $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})$ defined over $\mathcal{H}$, $ω= \{ω_e : e \in \mathcal{E} \}$ is a sequence of positive real numbers such that $\sum_e ω_e = 1$ and $P_ω$ is the Markov operator on $B\big(\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})\big)$ defined by \begin{align*} P_ω(x) = \sum_{e \in \mathcal{E}} ω_e l_e^* x l_e, \ x \in B\big(\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})\big), \end{align*} where, for $e \in \mathcal{E}$, $l_e$ denotes the left creation operator associated with $e$. The non-commutative Poisson boundary associated with $\Big(B\big(\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{H})\big), P_ω\Big)$ turns out to be an injective factor of type $III$ for any choice of $ω$. Moreover, if $\mathcal{H}$ is finite-dimensional, we completely classify the Poisson boundary in terms of its Connes $S$-invarinat and curiously they are type $III _{λ}$ factors with $λ$ belonging to a certain small class of algebraic numbers.

The non-iterates are dense in the space of continuous self-maps

In this paper we develop a tool to identify functions which have no iterative roots of any order. Using this, we prove that when $X$ is $[0,1]^m$, $\mathbb{R}^m$ or $S^1$, every non-empty open set of the space $\mathcal{C}(X)$ of continuous self-maps on $X$ endowed with the compact-open topology contains a map that does not have even discontinuous iterative roots of order $n\ge 2$. This, in particular, proves that the complement of $\{f^n: f\in \mathcal{C}(X)~\text{and}~n\ge 2\}$, the set of non-iterates, is dense in $\mathcal{C}(X)$ for these $X$.

Lattices of logmodular algebras

A subalgebra $\mathcal{A}$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{M}$ is logmodular (resp. has factorization) if the set $\{a^*a; a\text{ is invertible with }a,a^{-1}\in\mathcal{A}\}$ is dense in (resp. equal to) the set of all positive and invertible elements of $\mathcal{M}$. There are large classes of well studied algebras, both in commutative and non-commutative settings, which are known to be logmodular. In this paper, we show that the lattice of projections in a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ whose ranges are invariant under a logmodular algebra in $\mathcal{M}$, is a commutative subspace lattice. Further, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a factor then this lattice is a nest. As a special case, it follows that all reflexive (in particular, completely distributive CSL) logmodular subalgebras of type I factors are nest algebras, thus answering a question of Paulsen and Raghupathi [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 363 (2011) 2627-2640]. We also discuss some sufficient criteria under which an algebra having factorization is automatically reflexive and is a nest algebra.

Stinespring's Theorem for Unbounded Operator valued Local completely positive maps and Its Applications

Anar A. Dosiev in [Local operator spaces, unbounded operators and multinormed $C^*$-algebras, J. Funct. Anal. 255 (2008), 1724-1760], obtained a Stinespring's theorem for local completely positive maps (in short: local CP-maps) on locally $C^{\ast}$-algebras. In this article a suitable notion of minimality for this construction has been identified so as to ensure uniqueness up to unitary equivalence for the associated representation. Using this a Radon-Nikodym type theorem for local completely positive maps has been proved. Further, a Stinespring's theorem for unbounded operator valued local completely positive maps on Hilbert modules over locally $C^{\ast}$-algebras (also called as local CP-inducing maps) has been presented. Following a construction of M. Joiţa, a Radon-Nikodym type theorem for local CP-inducing maps has been shown. In both cases the Radon-Nikodym derivative obtained is a positive contraction on some complex Hilbert space with an upward filtered family of reducing subspaces.

Two states

D. Bures defined a metric $β$ on states of a $C^*$-algebra and this concept has been generalized to unital completely positive maps $ϕ: \mathcal A \to \mathcal B$, where $\mathcal B$ is either an injective $C^*$-algebra or a von Neumann algebra. We introduce a new distance $γ$ for the same classes of unital completely positive maps. We use in our definition the distance between representations on the same Hilbert $C^*$-module in contrast to the Bures metric which uses one representation and distinct vectors. This metric can be expressed in terms of a class of completely positive maps on free products of $C^*$-algebras and in this setting $γ$ looks like Wasserstein metric on probability measures. Surprisingly, when the range algebra $\mathcal B$ is injective, $γ$ and $β$ are related by the following explicit formula: $β^2= 2-\sqrt{4- γ^2} .$ A deep result of Choi and Li on constrained dilation is the main tool in proving this formula.

Roots of Completely Positive Maps

We introduce the concept of completely positive roots of completely positive maps on operator algebras. We do this in different forms: as asymptotic roots, proper discrete roots and as continuous one-parameter semigroups of roots. We present structural and general existence and non-existence results, some special examples in settings where we understand the situation better, and several challenging open problems. Our study is closely related to Elfving's embedding problem in classical probability and the divisibility problem of quantum channels.

Additive units of product system

We introduce the notion of additive units and roots of a unit in a spatial product system. The set of all roots of any unit forms a Hilbert space and its dimension is the same as the index of the product system. We show that a unit and all of its roots generate the type I part of the product system. Using properties of roots, we also provide an alternative proof of the Powers' problem that the cocycle conjugacy class of Powers sum is independent of the choice of intertwining isometries. In the last section, we introduce the notion of cluster of a product subsystem and establish its connection with random sets in the sense of Tsirelson and Liebscher.

Bures Distance For Completely Positive Maps

D. Bures had defined a metric on the set of normal states on a von Neumann algebra using GNS representations of states. This notion has been extended to completely positive maps between $C^*$-algebras by D. Kretschmann, D. Schlingemann and R. F. Werner. We present a Hilbert $C^*$-module version of this theory. We show that we do get a metric when the completely positive maps under consideration map to a von Neumann algebra. Further, we include several examples and counter examples. We also prove a rigidity theorem, showing that representation modules of completely positive maps which are close to the identity map contain a copy of the original algebra.

The Schur-Horn theorem for operators with finite spectrum

The carpenter problem in the context of $II_1$ factors, formulated by Kadison asks: Let $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{M}$ be a masa in a type $II_1$ factor and let $E$ be the normal conditional expectation from $\mathcal{M}$ onto $\mathcal{A}$. Then, is it true that for every positive contraction $A$ in $\mathcal{A}$, there is a projection $P$ in $\mathcal{M}$ such that $E(P) = A$? In this note, we show that this is true if $A$ has finite spectrum. We will then use this result to prove an exact Schur-Horn theorem for (positive)operators with finite spectrum and an approximate Schur-Horn theorem for general (positive)operators.

Inclusion systems and amalgamated products of product systems

Here we generalize the concept of spatial tensor product, introduced by Skeide, of two product systems via a pair of normalized units. This new notion is called amalgamated tensor product of product systems, and now the amalgamation can be done using a contractive morphism. Index of amalgamation product (when done through units) adds up for normalized units but for non-normalized units, the index is one more than the sum. We define inclusion systems and use it as a tool for index computations. It is expected that this notion will have other uses.

Subsystems of Fock Need Not Be Fock: Spatial CP-Semigroups

We show that a product subsystem of a time ordered system (that is, a product system of time ordered Fock modules), though type I, need not be isomorphic to a time ordered product system. In that way, we answer an open problem in the classification of CP-semigroups by product systems. We define spatial strongly continuous CP-semigroups on a unital C*-algebra and characterize them as those that have a Christensen-Evans generator.

Maximal Commutative Subalgebras Invariant for CP-Maps: (Counter-)Examples

We solve, mainly by counterexamples, many natural questions regarding maximal commutative subalgebras invariant under CP-maps or semigroups of CP-maps on a von Neumann algebra. In particular, we discuss the structure of the generators of norm continuous semigroups on B(G) leaving a maximal commutative subalgebra invariant and show that there exists Markov CP-semigroups on M_d without invariant maximal commutative subalgebras for any d>2.

A Problem of Powers and the Product of Spatial Product Systems

In the 2002 AMS summer conference on ``Advances in Quantum Dynamics'' in Mount Holyoke Robert Powers proposed a sum operation for spatial E0-semigroups. Still during the conference Skeide showed that the Arveson system of that sum is the product of spatial Arveson systems. This product may but need not coincide with the tensor product of Arveson systems. The Powers sum of two spatial E0-semigroups is, therefore, up to cocycle conjugacy Skeide's product of spatial noises.

A completely entangled subspace of maximal dimension

A completely entangled subspace of a tensor product of Hilbert spaces is a subspace with no non-trivial product vector. K. R. Parthasarathy determined the maximum dimension possible for such a subspace. Here we present a simple explicit example of one such space. We determine the set of product vectors in its orthogonal complement and see that it spans whole of the orthogonal complement. This way we are able to determine the minimum dimension possible for an unextendible product basis (UPB) consisting of product vectors which are linearly independent but not necessarily mutually orthogonal.

On Product Systems arising from Sum Systems

Boris Tsirelson constructed an uncountable family of type III product systems of Hilbert spaces through the theory of Gausian spaces, measure type spaces and `slightly coloured noises', using techniques from probability theory. Here we take a purely functional analytic approach and try to have a better understanding of Tsireleson's construction and his examples. We prove an extension of Shale's theorem connecting symplectic group and Weyl representation. We show that the `Shale map' respects compositions (This settles an old conjecture of K. R. Parthasarathy). Using this we associate a product system to a sum system. This construction includes the exponential product system of Arveson, as a trivial case, and the type III examples of Tsirelson. By associating a von Neumann algebra to every `elementary set' in [0,1], in a much simpler and direct way, we arrive at the invariants of the product system introduced by Tsirelson, given in terms of the sum system. Then we introduce a notion of divisibility for a sum system, and prove that the examples of Tsirelson are divisible. It is shown that only type I and type III product systems arise out of divisible sum systems. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a divisible sum system to give rise to a unitless (type III) product system.

Standard noncommuting and commuting dilations of commuting tuples

We introduce a notion called `maximal commuting piece' for tuples of Hilbert space operators. Given a commuting tuple of operators forming a row contraction there are two commonly used dilations in multivariable operator theory. Firstly there is the minimal isometric dilation consisting of isometries with orthogonal ranges and hence it is a noncommuting tuple. There is also a commuting dilation related with a standard commuting tuple on Boson Fock space. We show that this commuting dilation is the maximal commuting piece of the minimal isometric dilation. We use this result to classify all representations of Cuntz algebra O_n coming from dilations of commuting tuples.
