Muon spin rotation and infrared spectroscopy study of $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$

The magnetic and superconducting properties of a series of underdoped $Ba_{1-x}Na_{x}Fe_{2}As_{2}$ (BNFA) single crystals with $0.19 \leq x\leq 0.34$ has been investigated with the complementary muon-spin-rotation ($μ$SR) and infrared spectroscopy techniques. The focus has been on the different antiferromagnetic states in the underdoped regime and their competition with superconductivity, especially for the ones with a tetragonal crystal structure and a so-called double-$Q$ magnetic order. Besides the collinear state with a spatially inhomogeneous spin-charge-density wave (i-SCDW) order at $x=0.24$ and $0.26$, that was previously identified in BNFA, we obtained evidence for an orthomagnetic state with a "hedgehog"-type spin vortex crystal (SVC) structure at $x=0.32$ and $0.34$. Whereas in the former i-SCDW state the infrared spectra show no sign of a superconducting response down to the lowest measured temperature of about 10K, in the SVC state there is a strong superconducting response similar to the one at optimum doping. The magnetic order is strongly suppressed here in the superconducting state and at $x=0.34$ there is even a partial re-entrance into a paramagnetic state at $T<<T_c$.

Backfolded acoustic phonons in metal-oxide superlattices

We report the observation of low-frequency modes in the Raman spectra of thin-film superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7-δ} $ and various manganite perovskites. Our study shows that these modes are caused by the backfolding of acoustic phonons due to the additional periodicity introduced by the superlattice. Such modes were previously only observed for ultra-pure semiconductor superlattices. They can be used to determine the bilayer thickness of the superlattice and its speed of sound. Moreover, we use the spatial resolution of Raman microscopy to map the film thickness inhomogeneity across a sample, making these modes a useful tool to characterize thin-film superlattices.

Granular superconductivity and magnetic-field-driven recovery of macroscopic coherence in a cuprate/manganite multilayer

We show that in Pr$ _{0.5} $La$ _{0.2} $Ca$ _{0.3} $MnO$ _{3} $/YBa$ _{2} $Cu$ _{3} $O$ _{7} $ (PLCMO/YBCO) multilayers the low temperature state of YBCO is very resistive and resembles the one of a granular superconductor or a frustrated Josephson-junction network. Notably, a coherent superconducting response can be restored with a large magnetic field which also suppresses the charge-orbital order in PLCMO. This coincidence suggests that the granular superconducting state of YBCO is induced by the charge-orbital order of PLCMO. The coupling mechanism and the nature of the induced inhomogeneous state in YBCO remain to be understood.

Possible very high transition temperatures in the infinite-layer ACuO$ _{2} $ cuprate superconductor for A={Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba}: A DFT study

We show from a bond valence sum correlation that very high superconducting $ T_{c} $ values should be found in optimally hole-doped infinite-layer ACuO$ _{2} $ cuprates - up to 160~K for A = Ba. The projected increase in $ T_{c} $ across the series arises from "internal pressure" effects as A runs from Mg to Ba. We then use density functional theory to investigate these pressure effects on the band structure in an attempt to understand this progressive increase in $ T_{c} $. Where these materials have been synthesised we find good agreement between our calculated structural parameters and the experimental ones. We find that internal pressure associated with increasing ion size does indeed enhance the superconducting energy gap, as observed, via modifications to the electronic dispersion. Furthermore, in our calculations, pressure alters the dispersion independently of how it is applied (internal or external) so that the superconducting energy gap correlates with the unit-cell volume and a Fermi-surface shape-parameter describing ratio of next-nearest-neighbor to nearest-neighbor hopping integrals. We infer an energy scale for the pairing interaction of the order of 1~eV, well above the magnetic energy scale.

X-ray absorption study of the ferromagnetic Cu moment at the $\mathbf{{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}/{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}}$ interface and the variation of its exchange interaction with the Mn moment

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF coupling with the Mn moments is strongly reduced or even entirely suppressed. The ferromagnetic order of the Cu moments thus seems to be intrinsic to the interfacial CuO$_2$ planes and related to a weakly ferromagnetic intra-planar exchange interaction. The latter is discussed in terms of the partial occupation of the Cu $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals, which occurs in the context of the so-called orbital reconstruction of the interfacial Cu ions.

Muon-spin-rotation study of the magnetic structure in the tetragonal antiferromagnetic state of weakly underdoped Ba$ _{1-x} $K$ _{x} $Fe$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $

With muon spin rotation ($ μ$SR) we studied the transition between the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic (o-AF) and the tetragonal antiferromagnetic (t-AF) states of a weakly underdoped Ba$ _{1-x} $K$ _{x} $Fe$ _{2} $As$ _{2} $ single crystal. We observed some characteristic changes of the magnitude and the orientation of the magnetic field at the muon site which, due to the fairly high point symmetry of the latter, allow us to identify the magnetic structure of the t-AF state. It is the so-called, inhomogeneous double-$\mathbf{Q}$ magnetic structure with $ c $-axis oriented moments which has a vanishing magnetic moment on half of the Fe sites.

Dielectric versus magnetic pairing mechanisms in high-temperature cuprate superconductors investigated using Raman scattering

We suggest, and demonstrate, a systematic approach to the study of cuprate superconductors, namely, progressive change of ion size in order to systematically alter the interaction strength and other key parameters. R(Ba,Sr)$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (R={La, ... Lu,Y}) is such a system where potentially obscuring structural changes are minimal. We thereby systematically alter both dielectric and magnetic properties. Dielectric fluctuation is characterized by ionic polarizability while magnetic fluctuation is characterized by exchange interactions measurable by Raman scattering. The range of transition temperatures is 70 to 107 K and we find that these correlate only with the dielectric properties, a behavior which persists with external pressure. The ultimate significance may remain to be proven but it highlights the role of dielectric screening in the cuprates and adds support to a previously proposed novel pairing mechanism involving exchange of quantized waves of electronic polarization.
