A Generalized Stueckelberg-Higgs gauge theories

The aim of this work is to discuss and explore some generalized aspects of generation of photon mass respecting gauge symmetry. We introduce generalized Stueckelberg and Higgs gauge theories and present the classical and quantum frameworks related to them. We construct the quantum theory by writing the transition amplitude in the Fadeev-Senjanovic formalism and put it in a covariant form by the Fadeev-Popov method. We also analyze the independence of the transition amplitude by gauge parameters via BRS-T symmetry. Even in the generalized context, the Stueckelberg structure influences the quantization process of the Higgs theory in the 't Hooft's fashion, in which an intimate relationship between the Stueckelberg compensating field and the Goldstone boson arises.

Planar generalized electrodynamics for one-loop amplitude in the Heisenberg picture

We examine the generalized quantum electrodynamics as a natural extension of the Maxwell electrodynamics to cure the one-loop divergence. We establish a precise scenario to discuss the underlying features between photon and fermion where the perturbative Maxwell electrodynamics fails. Our quantum model combines stability, unitarity, and gauge invariance as the central properties. To interpret the quantum fluctuations without suffering from the physical conflicts proved by Haag's theorem, we construct the covariant quantization in the Heisenberg picture instead of the Interaction one. Furthermore, we discuss the absence of anomalous magnetic moment and mass-shell singularity.

Quantum electrodynamics in the null-plane causal perturbation theory

We study quantum electrodynamics (QED) in the light-front dynamical form by using null-plane causal perturbation theory. We establish the equivalence with instant dynamics for the scattering processes, whose normalization allows to construct the instantaneous terms of the usual null-plane QED Lagrangian density. Then we study vacuum polarization and normalize it by studying its insertions into Møller's scattering process, obtaining the complete photon's propagator, which turns to be equivalent to the one of instant dynamics only when gauge invariance is taken into account.

Dynamical invariants and quantization of the one-dimensional time-dependent, damped, and driven harmonic oscillator

In this paper, it is proposed a quantization procedure for the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with time-dependent frequency, time-dependent driven force, and time-dependent dissipative term. The method is based on the construction of dynamical invariants previously proposed by the authors, in which fundamental importance is given to the linear invariants of the oscillator.

Multipole Expansion in Generalized Electrodynamics

In this article we study some classical aspects of Podolsky Electrodynamics in the static regime. We develop the multipole expansion for the theory in both the electrostatic and the magnetostatic cases. We also address the problem of consistently truncating the infinite series associated with the several kinds of multipoles, yielding approximations for the static Podolskian electromagnetic field to any degree of precision required. Moreover, we apply the general theory of multipole expansion to some specific physical problems. In those problems we identify the first terms of the series with the monopole, dipole and quadrupole terms in the generalized theory. We also propose a situation in which Podolsky theory can be experimentally tested.

Non-perturbative Solution to the Quantum Interaction Problem via Schwinger's Action Principle

The most realistic situations in quantum mechanics involve the interaction between two or more systems. In the most of reliable models, the form and structure of the interactions generate differential equations which are, in the most of cases, almost impossible to solve exactly. In this paper, using the Schwinger Quantum Action Principle, we found the time transformation function that solves exactly the harmonic oscillator interacting with a set of other harmonic coupled oscillators. In order to do it, we have introduced a new special set of creation and annihilation operators which leads directly to the \emph{dressed states} associated to the system, which are the real quantum states of the interacting \emph{\textquotedblleft field-particle\textquotedblright} system. To obtain the closed solution, it is introduced in the same foot a set of \emph{normal mode} creation and annihilation operators of the system related to the first ones by an orthogonal transformation. We find the eigenstates, amplitude transitions and the system spectra without any approximation. At last, we show that the Schwinger Variational Principle provides the solutions in a free representation way.

Functional quantization of Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Electrodynamics

The main goal of this work is to study systematically the quantum aspects of the interaction between scalar particles in the framework of Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Electrodynamics (GSDKP). For this purpose the theory is quantized after a constraint analysis following Dirac's methodology by determining the Hamiltonian transition amplitude. In particular, the covariant transition amplitude is established in the generalized non-mixing Lorenz gauge. The complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and the theory's renormalizability is also detailed presented. Next, the radiative corrections for the Green's functions at $α$-order are computed; and, as it turns out, an unexpected $m_{P}$-dependent divergence on the DKP sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory, a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy and vertex part at $α^{2}$-order are presented, where it is possible to observe contributions from the DKP self-energy function, and then analyse whether or not this novel divergence propagates to higher-order contributions. Lastly, an energy range where the theory is well defined: $m^{2}\ll k^{2}<m_{p}^{2}$ was also found by evaluating the effective coupling for the GSDKP.

Three-dimensional Background Field Gravity: A Hamilton-Jacobi analysis

We analyse the constraint structure of the Background Field model for three dimensional gravity including a cosmological term via the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We find the complete set of involutive Hamiltonians that assures the integrability of the system and calculate the characteristic equations of the system. We established the equivalence between these equations and the field equations and also obtain the generators of canonical and gauge transformations.

$SQED_4$ and $QED_4$ on the null-plane

We studied the scalar electrodynamics ($SQED_{4}$) and the spinor electrodynamics ($QED_{4}$) in the null-plane formalism. We followed the Dirac's technique for constrained systems to perform a detailed analysis of the constraint structure in both theories. We imposed the appropriated boundary conditions on the fields to fix the hidden subset first class constraints which generate improper gauge transformations and obtain an unique inverse of the second class constraint matrix. Finally, choosing the null-plane gauge condition, we determined the generalized Dirac brackets of the independent dynamical variables which via the correspondence principle give the (anti)-commutators for posterior quantization.

Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky quantization of the generalized scalar electrodynamics

This work comprises a study upon the quantization and the renormalizability of the generalized electrodynamics of spinless charged particles (mesons), namely, the Generalized Scalar Electrodynamics ($GSQED_{4}$). The theory is quantized in the covariant framework of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky method. Thereafter, the complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and a proper discussion on the theory's renormalizability is also given. Next, it is presented the computation and further discussion on the radiative correction at $α$-order; and, as it turns out, an unexpected $m_{P}$-dependent divergence on the mesonic sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory it is also shown a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy at $α^{2}$-order, where is observed contributions from the meson self-energy function. Afterwards, we present the expressions of the counter-terms and effective coupling of the theory. Obtaining from the later a energy range where the theory is defined $m^{2} \leq k^{2} < m_{P}^{2}$. It is also shown in our final discussion that the new divergence is absorbed suitably by the mass counter-term $δ_{Z_{0}}$, showing therefore that the gauge WFT identities are satisfied still.

Causal approach for the electron-positron scattering in Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics

In this paper we study the generalized electrodynamics contribution for the electron-positron scattering process, $e^{-}e^{+}\rightarrow e^{-}e^{+}$, the Bhabha scattering. Within the framework of the standard model, for energies larger when compared to the electron mass, we calculate the cross section expression for the scattering process. This quantity is usually calculated in the framework of the Maxwell electrodynamics and, by phenomenological reasons, corrected by a cut-off parameter. On the other hand, by considering the generalized electrodynamics instead of Maxwell's, we can show that the effects played by the Podolsky mass is actually a natural cut-off parameter for this scattering process. Furthermore, by means of experimental data of Bhabha scattering we will estimate its lower bound value. Nevertheless, in order to have a mathematically well defined description of our study we shall present our discussion in the framework of the Epstein-Glaser causal theory.

Construction of dynamical invariants for the time-dependent harmonic oscillator with a time-dependent driven force

We construct the linear and quadratic polynomial dynamical invariants for the classical and quantum time-dependent harmonic oscillator driven by a time-dependent force. To obtain them, we use exclusively the associated equations of motion for the system. We also find an algebraic relationship between the linear and quadratic invariants at the classical and quantum level.

Higher-derivative non-Abelian gauge fields via the Faddeev-Jackiw formalism

In this paper we analyze two higher-derivative theories, the generalized electrodynamics and the Alekseev-Arbuzov-Baikov's effective Lagrangian from the point of view of Faddeev-Jackiw sympletic approach. It is shown that the full set of constraint is obtained directly from the zero-mode eigenvectors, and that they are in accordance with known results from Dirac's theory, a remnant and recurrent issue in the literature. The method shows to be rather economical in relation to the Dirac's one, obviating thus unnecessary classification and calculations. Afterwards, to conclude we construct the transition-amplitude of the non-Abelian theory following a constrained BRST-method.

Källén-Lehmann representation of noncommutative quantum electrodynamics

Noncommutative (NC) quantum field theory is the subject of many analyses on formal and general aspects looking for deviations and, therefore, potential noncommutative spacetime effects. Within of this large class, we may now pay some attention to the quantization of NC field theory on lower dimensions and look closely at the issue of dynamical mass generation to the gauge field. This work encompasses the quantization of the two-dimensional massive quantum electrodynamics and three-dimensional topologically massive quantum electrodynamics. We begin by addressing the problem on a general dimensionality making use of the perturbative Seiberg-Witten map to, thus, construct a general action, to only then specify the problem to two and three dimensions. The quantization takes place through the Källén-Lehmann spectral representation and Yang-Feldman-Källén formulation, where we calculate the respective spectral density function to the gauge field. Furthermore, regarding the photon two-point function, we discuss how its infrared behavior is related to the term generated by quantum corrections in two dimensions, and, moreover, in three dimensions, we study the issue of nontrivial θ-dependent corrections to the dynamical mass generation.

Nonperturbative Aspects of the two-dimensional Massive Gauged Thirring Model

In this paper we present a study based on the use of functional techniques on the issue of insertions of massive fermionic fields in the two-dimensional massless Gauged Thirring Model. As it will be shown, the fermionic mass contributes to the Green's functions in a surprisingly simple way, leaving therefore the original nonperturbative nature of the massless results still intact in the massive theory. Also, by means of complementarity, we present a second discussion of the massive model, now at its bosonic representation.

The Epstein-Glaser causal approach to the Light-Front QED$_{4}$. I: Free theory

In this work we present the study of light-front field theories in the realm of axiomatic theory. It is known that when one uses the light-cone gauge pathological poles $(k^{+}) ^{-n}$ arises, demanding a prescription to be employed in order to tame these ill-defined poles and to have correct Feynman integrals due to the lack of Wick rotation in such theories. In order to shed a new light on this long standing problem we present here a discussion based on the use rigorous mathematical machinery of distributions combined with physical concepts, such as causality, to show how to deal with these singular propagators in a general fashion without making use of any prescription. The first step of our development will consist in showing how analytic representation for propagators arises by requiring general physical properties in the framework of Wightman's formalism. From that we shall determine the equal-time (anti)commutation relations in the light-front form for the scalar, fermionic fields and for the dynamical components of the electromagnetic field. In conclusion, we introduce the Epstein-Glaser causal method in order to have a mathematical rigorous treatment of the free propagators of the theory, allowing us to discuss the general treatment for propagators of the type $(k^{+}) ^{-n}$. Moreover, we show that at given conditions our results reproduce known prescriptions in the literature.

The Epstein-Glaser causal approach to the Light-Front QED$_{4}$. II: Vacuum Polarization tensor

In this work we show how to construct the one-loop vacuum polarization for light-front QED$_{4}$ in the framework of the perturbative causal theory. Usually, in the canonical approach, it is considered for the fermionic propagator the so-called instantaneous term, but it is known in literature that this term is controversial because it can be omitted by computational reasons; for instance, by compensation or vanishing by dimensional regularization. In this work we propose a solution to this paradox. First, in the perturbative causal theory, it is shown that the fermionic propagator does not have instantaneous terms, and with this propagator we calculate the one-loop vacuum polarization, from the calculation it follows the same result as obtained by the standard approach, but without reclaiming any extra assumptions. Moreover, since the perturbative causal theory is defined in the distributional framework, we can also show the reason behind we obtaining the same result whether we consider or not the instantaneous fermionic propagator term.

Renormalizability of generalized quantum electrodynamics

In this work we present the study of the renormalizability of the Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics ($GQED_{4}$). We begin the article by reviewing the on-shell renormalization scheme applied to $GQED_{4}$. Thereafter, we calculate the explicit expressions for all the counter-terms at one-loop approximation and discuss the infrared behavior of the theory as well. Next, we explore some properties of the effective coupling of the theory which would give an indictment of the validity regime of theory: $m^{2} \leq k^{2} < m_{P}^{2}$. Afterwards, we make use of experimental data from the electron anomalous magnetic moment to set possible values for the theory free parameter through the one-loop contribution of Podolsky mass-dependent term to Pauli's form factor $F_{2}(q^{2})$.

Path-Integral Bosonization of Massive Gauged Thirring Model

In this work the bosonization of two-dimensional massive gauged Thirring model in the path-integral framework is presented. After completing the bosonization prescription, by the fermionic mass expansion, we perform an analysis of the strong coupling regime of the model through the transition amplitude, regarding the intention of extending the previous result about the isomorphisms, at quantum level, of the massless gauged Thirring model to the massive case.

The Matsubara-Fradkin Thermodynamical Quantization of Podolsky Electrodynamics

In this work we apply the Matsubara-Fradkin formalism and the Nakanishi's auxiliary field method to the quantization of the Podolsky electrodynamics in thermodynamic equilibrium. This approach allows us to write consistently the path integral representation for the partition function of gauge theories in a simple manner. Furthermore, we find the Dyson-Schwinger-Fradkin equations and the Ward-Fradkin-Takahashi identities for the Podolsky theory. We also write the most general form for the polarization tensor in thermodynamic equilibrium.

Non-Adiabatic Solution to the Time Dependent Quantum Harmonic Oscillator

Using Schwinger Variational Principle we solve the problem of quantum harmonic oscillator with time dependent frequency. Here, we do not take the usual approach which implicitly assumes an adiabatic behavior for the frequency. Instead, we propose a new solution where the frequency only needs continuity in its first derivative or to have a finite set of removable discontinuities.

Path integral approach to the full Dicke model

The full Dicke model describes a system of $N$ identical two level-atoms coupled to a single-mode quantized bosonic field. The model considers rotating and counter-rotating coupling terms between the atoms and the bosonic field, with coupling constants $g_1$ and $g_2$, for each one of the coupling terms, respectively. We study finite temperature properties of the model using the path integral approach and functional methods. In the thermodynamic limit, $N\rightarrow\infty$, the system exhibits phase transition from normal to superradiant phase, at some critical values of temperature and coupling constants. We distinguish between three particular cases, the first one corresponds to the case of rotating wave approximation, which $g_1\neq 0$ and $g_2=0$, the second one corresponds to the case of $g_1=0$ and $g_2\neq 0$, in these two cases the model has a continuous symmetry. The last one, corresponds to the case of $g_1\neq 0$ and $g_2\neq 0$, which the model has a discrete symmetry. The phase transition in each case is related to the spontaneous breaking of its respective symmetry. For each one of these three particular cases, we find the asymptotic behaviour of the partition function in the thermodynamic limit, and the collective spectrum of the system in the normal and the superradiat phase. For the case of rotating wave approximation, and also the case of $g_1=0$ and $g_2\neq 0$, in the superradiant phase, the collective spectrum has a zero energy value, corresponding to the Goldstone mode associated to the continuous symmetry breaking of the model. Our analyse and results are valid in the limit of zero temperature, $β\rightarrow\infty$, in which, the model exhibits a quantum phase transition.

General Relativity in two dimensions: a Hamilton-Jacobi constraint analysis

We will analyze the constraint structure of the Einstein-Hilbert first-order action in two dimensions using the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. We will be able to find a set of involutive, as well as a set of non-involutive constraints. Using generalized brackets we will show how to assure integrability of the theory, to eliminate the set of non-involutive constraints, and to build the field equations.

The canonical structure of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics on the Null-Plane

In this work we will develop the canonical structure of Podolsky's generalized electrodynamics on the null-plane. This theory has second-order derivatives in the Lagrangian function and requires a closer study for the definition of the momenta and canonical Hamiltonian of the system. On the null-plane the field equations also demand a different analysis of the initial-boundary value problem and proper conditions must be chosen on the null-planes. We will show that the constraint structure, based on Dirac formalism, presents a set of second-class constraints, which are exclusive of the analysis on the null-plane, and an expected set of first-class constraints that are generators of a U(1) group of gauge transformations. An inspection on the field equations will lead us to the generalized radiation gauge on the null-plane, and Dirac Brackets will be introduced considering the problem of uniqueness of these brackets under the chosen initial-boundary condition of the theory.

Conformal invariance of massless Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory in Riemannian space-times

We investigate the conformal invariance of massless Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory coupled to riemannian space-times. We show that, as usual, in the minimal coupling procedure only the spin 1 sector of the theory -which corresponds to the electromagnetic field- is conformally invariant. We show also that the conformal invariance of the spin 0 sector can be naturally achieved by introducing a compensating term in the lagrangian. Such a procedure -besides not modifying the spin 1 sector- leads to the well-known conformal coupling between the scalar curvature and the massless Klein-Gordon-Fock field. Going beyond the riemannian spacetimes, we briefly discuss the effects of a nonvanishing torsion in the scalar case.

Sum rules in the oscillator radiation processes

We consider the problem of an harmonic oscillator coupled to a scalar field in the framework of recently introduced dressed coordinates. We compute all the probabilities associated with the decay process of an excited level of the oscillator. Instead of doing direct quantum mechanical calculations we establish some sum rules from which we infer the probabilities associated to the different decay processes of the oscillator. Thus, the sum rules allows to show that the transition probabilities between excited levels follow a binomial distribution.

Interacting spin 0 fields with torsion via Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory

Here we study the behaviour of spin 0 sector of the DKP field in spaces with torsion. First we show that in a Riemann-Cartan manifold the DKP field presents an interaction with torsion when minimal coupling is performed, contrary to the behaviour of the KG field, a result that breaks the usual equivalence between the DKP and the KG fields. Next we analyse the case of Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity Weitzenbock manifold, showing that in this case there is a perfect agreement between KG and DKP fields. The origins of both results are also discussed.

Spin 1 fields in Riemann-Cartan space-times "via" Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory

We consider massive spin 1 fields, in Riemann-Cartan space-times, described by Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory. We show that this approach induces a coupling between the spin 1 field and the space-time torsion which breaks the usual equivalence with the Proca theory, but that such equivalence is preserved in the context of the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity.

On Equivalence of Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau and Klein-Gordon Equations

A strict proof of equivalence between Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) and Klein-Gordon (KG) theories is presented for physical S-matrix elements in the case of charged scalar particles interacting in minimal way with an external or quantized electromagnetic field. First, Hamiltonian canonical approach to DKP theory is developed in both component and matrix form. The theory is then quantized through the construction of the generating functional for Green functions (GF) and the physical matrix elements of S-matrix are proved to be relativistic invariants. The equivalence between both theories is then proved using the connection between GF and the elements of S-matrix, including the case of only many photons states, and for more general conditions - so called reduction formulas of Lehmann, Symanzik, Zimmermann.

Radiative Corrections for the Gauged Thirring Model in Causal Perturbation Theory

We evaluate the one-loop fermion self-energy for the gauged Thirring model in (2+1) dimensions, with one massive fermion flavor, in the framework of the causal perturbation theory. In contrast to QED$_3$, the corresponding two-point function turns out to be infrared finite on the mass shell. Then, by means of a Ward identity, we derive the on-shell vertex correction and discuss the role played by causality for nonrenormalizable theories.

The Causal Phase in $QED_{3}$

The operator ${\bf S}$ in Fock space which describes the scattering and particle production processes in an external time-dependent electromagnetic potential $A$ can be constructed from the one-particle S-matrix up to a physical phase $λ[A]$. In this work we determine this phase for $QED$ in (2+1) dimensions, by means of causality, and show that no ultraviolet divergences arise, in contrast to the usual formalism of $QED$.
