Impossibility of obtaining a CP-violating Euler-Heisenberg effective theory from a viable modification of QED

In this paper, we examine the CP-violating term of the Euler-Heisenberg action. We focus in the aspects related with the generation of such a term from a QED-like model in terms of the effective action approach. In particular, we show that the generation of the CP-violating term is closely related with both of vector and axial fermionic bilinears. Although, these anomalous models are not a "viable" extension of QED, we argue that the CP-violating term in the photon sector is obtained only from this class of models, and not from any fundamental field theory.

Induced non-Abelian Chern-Simons effective action in very special relativity

In this paper, we study the one-loop induced effective action for a non-abelian gauge field in the very special relativity (VSR) framework in a $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetime. We show that there are new graphs contributing to the amplitudes of gluon $n$-point functions, e.g. $\langle GG\rangle$, $\langle GGG \rangle$ and $\langle GGGG \rangle$, originating from the non-local couplings generated in VSR. Using the one-loop analysis of the relevant graphs, we evaluate the VSR corrections to the induced kinetic term of the non-abelian gauge field action in three dimensions. Next, by applying the Ward identity, we determine the general tensorial structure for the amplitude of $\langle GG\rangle$ in VSR, which is valid at any order of the loop analysis. Moreover, we discuss the leading VSR corrections to the non-abelian Chern-Simons and Yang-Mills action through the analysis of $\langle GG\rangle$, $\langle GGG \rangle$ and $\langle GGGG \rangle$. In order to highlight the VSR effects, we present the VSR modification of non-abelian Chern-Simons effective action and then obtain the equation of motion for the non-abelian gauge field. As a result, we observe that the well-known pure gauge solution does not hold in the presence of VSR effects.

Non-local gravity in bouncing cosmology scenarios

In this work, we analyzed the improved Deser-Woodard non-local gravity over the background of five different bouncing cosmologies, whose premise is avoid the initial singular state of the universe. We developed the numerical solution for the non-local distortion function, which encompass the modifications to the Einstein-Hilbert action, using the reconstruction procedure and we have found that they have a viable cosmological solution. Afterwards, we discussed the physical aspects and outcomes of the evolution of the distortion function throughout the bouncing point for these models, specifically: the symmetric bounce, oscillatory bounce, the matter bounce, finite time singularity model, and the pre-inflationary asymmetrical bounce.

Path integral analysis of the axial anomaly in Very Special Relativity

In this note, we revise the problem of the axial anomaly in the framework of very special relativity following Fujikawa's path integral approach. We show nonperturbatively that no VSR contribution is present in the path integral measure in $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime. Furthermore, we extend our results to $(1+1)$ dimensions, as well as to the two-dimesional curved spacetime.

Vacuum Cherenkov radiation at finite temperature

In this paper we examine the thermal effects of the vacuum Cherenkov radiation in a Lorentz- and CPT-violating electrodynamics. We compute the thermal contribution to the Cherenkov radiation rate within the Thermofield Dynamics approach. Since the model under consideration possess a consistent canonical quantization and also fulfils the physical constraints in order to this vacuum process to happen, it is a perfect candidate to implement the study at finite temperature. We evaluate in details the instantaneous rate of energy loss for a charge, and show that the radiation rate is significantly modified at very high temperatures. Intriguingly, we further observe that when the temperature goes to infinity the radiation rate goes to zero even if the process is kinematically allowed.

One-loop Photon's Effective Action in the Noncommutative Scalar QED$_{3}$

In this paper, we consider the evaluation of the effective action for photons coupled to charged scalar fields in the framework of a $(2+1)$-dimensional noncommutative spacetime. In order to determine the noncommutative Maxwell Lagrangian density, we follow a perturbative approach, by integrating out the charged scalar fields, to compute the respective graphs for the vev's $\left\langle AA \right\rangle$, $\left\langle AAA \right\rangle$ and $\left\langle AAAA \right\rangle$. Surprisingly, it is shown that these contributions are planar and that, in the highly noncommutative limit, correspond to the Maxwell effective action and its higher-derivative corrections. It is explicitly verified that the one-loop effective action is gauge invariant, as well as under discrete symmetries: parity, time reversal and charge conjugation. Moreover, a comparison of the main results with the noncommutative QED$_{3}$ is established. In particular, the main difference is the absence of parity violating terms in the photon's effective action coming from integrating out the charged scalar fields.

Canonical formulation and path integral for local vacuum energy sequestering

We establish the Hamiltonian analysis and the canonical path integral for a local formulation of vacuum energy sequestering. In particular, by considering the state of the universe as a superposition of vacuum states corresponding to different values of the cosmological and gravitational constants, the path integral is extended to include integrations over the cosmological and gravitational constants. The result is an extension of the Ng-van Dam form of the path integral of unimodular gravity. It is argued to imply a relation between the fraction of the most likely values of the gravitational and cosmological constants and the average values of the energy density and pressure of matter over spacetime. Finally, we construct and analyze a BRST-exact formulation of the theory, which can be considered as a topological field theory.

Noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory (I): One-loop dispersion relation analysis

In this paper, we study the three-dimensional noncommutative Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. In the present analysis, a complete account for the gauge field two-point function renormalizability is presented and physical significant quantities are carefully established. The respective form factor expressions from the gauge field self-energy are computed at one-loop order. More importantly, an analysis of the gauge field dispersion relation, in search of possible noncommutative anomalies and infrared finiteness, is performed for three special cases, with particular interest in the highly noncommutative limit.

SIM$(1)$--VSR Maxwell-Chern-Simons electrodynamics

In this paper we propose a very special relativity (VSR)-inspired generalization of the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) electrodynamics. This proposal is based upon the construction of a proper study of the SIM$(1)$--VSR gauge-symmetry. It is shown that the VSR nonlocal effects present a significant and health departure from the usual MCS theory. The classical dynamics is analysed in full detail, by studying the solution for the electric field and static energy for this configuration. Afterwards, the interaction energy between opposite charges are derived and we show that the VSR effects play an important part in obtaining a (novel) finite expression for the static potential.

Thermal effects of a photon gas with a deformed Heisenberg algebra

In this paper we have consider the thermodynamics of a photon gas subject to the presence of a minimal measurable length following from a covariant extension of the original generalized uncertainty principle (GUP). After establishing consistently a generalized dynamics, we define a GUP deformed Maxwell invariant which serves as the basis for our study. In order to highlight the GUP effects we compute the one- and two-loop order contribution to the partition function at the high-temperature limit. Afterwards, by computing the internal energy density we conclude that the additional terms can be seen as corrections $δσ_{\rm{gup}}$ to the Stefan-Boltzmann law due to GUP effects.

Analogy between the Schwarzschild solution in a noncommutative gauge theory and the Reissner-Nordström metric

We study modifications of the Schwarzschild solution within the noncommutative gauge theory of gravity. In the present analysis, the deformed solutions are obtained by solving the field equations perturbatively, up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameter $Θ$, for both exterior and interior solutions of the equations of motion for $e_μ^a \left(x\right)$. Remarkably, we find that this new noncommutive solution is analogous to the Reissner-Nordström solution in the ordinary spacetime, in which the square of electric charge is replaced by the square of the noncommutativity parameter, but with opposite sign. This amounts to the noncommutative Schwarzschild radius $r_{NCS}$ becoming larger than the usual radius $r_S =2M$, instead of smaller as it happens to the Reissner-Nordström radius $r_{RN}$, implying that $r_{NCS}>r_{S} >r_{RN}$. An intuitive interpretation of this result is mentioned.

Born-Infeld electrodynamics in very special relativity

In this work we discuss the properties of a modified Born-Infeld electrodynamics in the framework of very special relativity (VSR). This proposal allows us to study VSR mass effects in a gauge-invariant context of nonlinear electrodynamics. It is analyzed in detail the electrostatic solutions for two different cases, as well as the VSR dispersion relations are found to be of a \emph{massive} particle with nonlinear modifications. Afterwards, the field energy and static potential are computed, in the latter we find from the VSR contribution a novel long-range $1/L^3$ correction to the Coulomb potential, in contrast to the $1/L^5$ correction of the usual Born-Infeld theory.

Functional quantization of Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Electrodynamics

The main goal of this work is to study systematically the quantum aspects of the interaction between scalar particles in the framework of Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Electrodynamics (GSDKP). For this purpose the theory is quantized after a constraint analysis following Dirac's methodology by determining the Hamiltonian transition amplitude. In particular, the covariant transition amplitude is established in the generalized non-mixing Lorenz gauge. The complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and the theory's renormalizability is also detailed presented. Next, the radiative corrections for the Green's functions at $α$-order are computed; and, as it turns out, an unexpected $m_{P}$-dependent divergence on the DKP sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory, a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy and vertex part at $α^{2}$-order are presented, where it is possible to observe contributions from the DKP self-energy function, and then analyse whether or not this novel divergence propagates to higher-order contributions. Lastly, an energy range where the theory is well defined: $m^{2}\ll k^{2}<m_{p}^{2}$ was also found by evaluating the effective coupling for the GSDKP.

Higher derivative Chern-Simons extension in the noncommutative QED$_{3}$

The noncommutative (NC) massive quantum electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimensions is considered. We show explicitly that the one-loop effective action arising from the integrating out the fermionic fields leads to the ordinary NC Chern-Simons and NC Maxwell action at the long wavelength limit (large fermion mass). In the next to leading order, the higher-derivative contributions to NC Chern-Simons are obtained. Moreover, the gauge invariance of the outcome action is carefully discussed. We then consider the higher-derivative modification into the pure NC Chern-Simons Lagrangian density and evaluate the one-loop correction to the pole of the photon propagator.

How unimodular gravity theories differ from general relativity at quantum level

We investigate path integral quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity. First a fully diffeomorphism-invariant theory is analyzed, which does not include a unimodular condition on the metric, while still being equivalent to other unimodular gravity theories at the classical level. The path integral has the same form as in general relativity (GR), except that the cosmological constant is an unspecified value of a variable, and it thus is unrelated to any coupling constant. When the state of the universe is a superposition of vacuum states, the path integral is extended to include an integral over the cosmological constant. Second, we analyze the standard unimodular theory of gravity, where the metric determinant is fixed by a constraint. Its path integral differs from the one of GR in two ways: the metric of spacetime satisfies the unimodular condition only in average over space, and both the Hamiltonian constraint and the associated gauge condition have zero average over space. Finally, the canonical relation between the given unimodular theories of gravity is established.

On the Bhabha scattering for $z=2$ Lifshitz QED

In this paper we compute and discuss the differential cross section of the Bhabha scattering in the framework of the $z=2$ Lifshitz QED. We start by constructing the classical solutions for the fermionic fields, in particular the completeness relations, and also deriving the theory's propagators. Afterwards, we compute the photon exchange and pair annihilation contributions for the Bhabha's process, and upon the results we establish the magnitude of the theory's free parameter by looking for small deviations of the QED tree results.

Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky quantization of the generalized scalar electrodynamics

This work comprises a study upon the quantization and the renormalizability of the generalized electrodynamics of spinless charged particles (mesons), namely, the Generalized Scalar Electrodynamics ($GSQED_{4}$). The theory is quantized in the covariant framework of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky method. Thereafter, the complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and a proper discussion on the theory's renormalizability is also given. Next, it is presented the computation and further discussion on the radiative correction at $α$-order; and, as it turns out, an unexpected $m_{P}$-dependent divergence on the mesonic sector of the theory is found. Furthermore, in order to show the effectiveness of the renormalization procedure on the present theory it is also shown a diagrammatic discussion on the photon self-energy at $α^{2}$-order, where is observed contributions from the meson self-energy function. Afterwards, we present the expressions of the counter-terms and effective coupling of the theory. Obtaining from the later a energy range where the theory is defined $m^{2} \leq k^{2} < m_{P}^{2}$. It is also shown in our final discussion that the new divergence is absorbed suitably by the mass counter-term $δ_{Z_{0}}$, showing therefore that the gauge WFT identities are satisfied still.

Causal approach for the electron-positron scattering in Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics

In this paper we study the generalized electrodynamics contribution for the electron-positron scattering process, $e^{-}e^{+}\rightarrow e^{-}e^{+}$, the Bhabha scattering. Within the framework of the standard model, for energies larger when compared to the electron mass, we calculate the cross section expression for the scattering process. This quantity is usually calculated in the framework of the Maxwell electrodynamics and, by phenomenological reasons, corrected by a cut-off parameter. On the other hand, by considering the generalized electrodynamics instead of Maxwell's, we can show that the effects played by the Podolsky mass is actually a natural cut-off parameter for this scattering process. Furthermore, by means of experimental data of Bhabha scattering we will estimate its lower bound value. Nevertheless, in order to have a mathematically well defined description of our study we shall present our discussion in the framework of the Epstein-Glaser causal theory.

Higher-derivative non-Abelian gauge fields via the Faddeev-Jackiw formalism

In this paper we analyze two higher-derivative theories, the generalized electrodynamics and the Alekseev-Arbuzov-Baikov's effective Lagrangian from the point of view of Faddeev-Jackiw sympletic approach. It is shown that the full set of constraint is obtained directly from the zero-mode eigenvectors, and that they are in accordance with known results from Dirac's theory, a remnant and recurrent issue in the literature. The method shows to be rather economical in relation to the Dirac's one, obviating thus unnecessary classification and calculations. Afterwards, to conclude we construct the transition-amplitude of the non-Abelian theory following a constrained BRST-method.

Källén-Lehmann representation of noncommutative quantum electrodynamics

Noncommutative (NC) quantum field theory is the subject of many analyses on formal and general aspects looking for deviations and, therefore, potential noncommutative spacetime effects. Within of this large class, we may now pay some attention to the quantization of NC field theory on lower dimensions and look closely at the issue of dynamical mass generation to the gauge field. This work encompasses the quantization of the two-dimensional massive quantum electrodynamics and three-dimensional topologically massive quantum electrodynamics. We begin by addressing the problem on a general dimensionality making use of the perturbative Seiberg-Witten map to, thus, construct a general action, to only then specify the problem to two and three dimensions. The quantization takes place through the Källén-Lehmann spectral representation and Yang-Feldman-Källén formulation, where we calculate the respective spectral density function to the gauge field. Furthermore, regarding the photon two-point function, we discuss how its infrared behavior is related to the term generated by quantum corrections in two dimensions, and, moreover, in three dimensions, we study the issue of nontrivial θ-dependent corrections to the dynamical mass generation.

Lorentz-violating effects in three-dimensional $QED$

Inspired in discussions presented lately regarding Lorentz-violating interaction terms in \cite{13,6}, we propose here a slightly different version for the coupling term. We will consider a modified quantum electrodynamics with violation of Lorentz symmetry defined in a $\left( 2+1\right) $-dimensional spacetime. We define the Lagrangian density with a Lorentz-violating interaction, where the the spacetime dimensionality is explicitly taken into account in its definition. The work encompasses an analysis of this model at both zero and finite-temperature, where very interesting features are known to occur due to the spacetime dimensionality. With that in mind we expect that the spacetime dimensionality may provide new insights about the radiative generation of higher-derivative terms into the action, implying in a new Lorentz-violating electrodynamics, as well the nonminimal coupling may provide interesting implications on the thermodynamical quantities.

Nonperturbative Aspects of the two-dimensional Massive Gauged Thirring Model

In this paper we present a study based on the use of functional techniques on the issue of insertions of massive fermionic fields in the two-dimensional massless Gauged Thirring Model. As it will be shown, the fermionic mass contributes to the Green's functions in a surprisingly simple way, leaving therefore the original nonperturbative nature of the massless results still intact in the massive theory. Also, by means of complementarity, we present a second discussion of the massive model, now at its bosonic representation.

The Epstein-Glaser causal approach to the Light-Front QED$_{4}$. I: Free theory

In this work we present the study of light-front field theories in the realm of axiomatic theory. It is known that when one uses the light-cone gauge pathological poles $(k^{+}) ^{-n}$ arises, demanding a prescription to be employed in order to tame these ill-defined poles and to have correct Feynman integrals due to the lack of Wick rotation in such theories. In order to shed a new light on this long standing problem we present here a discussion based on the use rigorous mathematical machinery of distributions combined with physical concepts, such as causality, to show how to deal with these singular propagators in a general fashion without making use of any prescription. The first step of our development will consist in showing how analytic representation for propagators arises by requiring general physical properties in the framework of Wightman's formalism. From that we shall determine the equal-time (anti)commutation relations in the light-front form for the scalar, fermionic fields and for the dynamical components of the electromagnetic field. In conclusion, we introduce the Epstein-Glaser causal method in order to have a mathematical rigorous treatment of the free propagators of the theory, allowing us to discuss the general treatment for propagators of the type $(k^{+}) ^{-n}$. Moreover, we show that at given conditions our results reproduce known prescriptions in the literature.

The Epstein-Glaser causal approach to the Light-Front QED$_{4}$. II: Vacuum Polarization tensor

In this work we show how to construct the one-loop vacuum polarization for light-front QED$_{4}$ in the framework of the perturbative causal theory. Usually, in the canonical approach, it is considered for the fermionic propagator the so-called instantaneous term, but it is known in literature that this term is controversial because it can be omitted by computational reasons; for instance, by compensation or vanishing by dimensional regularization. In this work we propose a solution to this paradox. First, in the perturbative causal theory, it is shown that the fermionic propagator does not have instantaneous terms, and with this propagator we calculate the one-loop vacuum polarization, from the calculation it follows the same result as obtained by the standard approach, but without reclaiming any extra assumptions. Moreover, since the perturbative causal theory is defined in the distributional framework, we can also show the reason behind we obtaining the same result whether we consider or not the instantaneous fermionic propagator term.

Thermal effective Lagrangian of generalized electrodynamics in static gravitational fields

In this paper we compute the effective Lagrangian of static gravitational fields interacting with thermal fields of generalized electrodynamics at high temperature. We employ the usual Matsubara imaginary-time formalism to obtain a closed form expression to the thermal effective Lagrangian at one-loop and two-loop order, in an arbitrary $ω$-dimensional spacetime, in which the equivalence between the static hard thermal loops and those with zero external energy-momentum is widely explored. Afterwards, the symmetries of the resulting expressions are discussed as well as the presence of the Tolman \emph{local} temperature.

Renormalizability of generalized quantum electrodynamics

In this work we present the study of the renormalizability of the Generalized Quantum Electrodynamics ($GQED_{4}$). We begin the article by reviewing the on-shell renormalization scheme applied to $GQED_{4}$. Thereafter, we calculate the explicit expressions for all the counter-terms at one-loop approximation and discuss the infrared behavior of the theory as well. Next, we explore some properties of the effective coupling of the theory which would give an indictment of the validity regime of theory: $m^{2} \leq k^{2} < m_{P}^{2}$. Afterwards, we make use of experimental data from the electron anomalous magnetic moment to set possible values for the theory free parameter through the one-loop contribution of Podolsky mass-dependent term to Pauli's form factor $F_{2}(q^{2})$.

Path-Integral Bosonization of Massive Gauged Thirring Model

In this work the bosonization of two-dimensional massive gauged Thirring model in the path-integral framework is presented. After completing the bosonization prescription, by the fermionic mass expansion, we perform an analysis of the strong coupling regime of the model through the transition amplitude, regarding the intention of extending the previous result about the isomorphisms, at quantum level, of the massless gauged Thirring model to the massive case.
