Vacuum-compatible photon-counting hybrid pixel detector for wide-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray diffraction and X-ray reflectometry in the tender X-ray range

A vacuum-compatible photon-counting hybrid pixel detector has been installed in the ultra-high vacuum (UHV) reflectometer of the four-crystal monochromator (FCM) beamline of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) at the electron storage ring BESSY II in Berlin, Germany. The setup is based on the PILATUS3 100K module. The detector can be used in the entire photon energy range accessible at the beamline from 1.75 to 10 keV. Complementing the already installed vacuum-compatible PILATUS 1M detector used for small-angle scattering (SAXS) and grazing incidence SAXS (GISAXS), it is possible to access larger scattering angles. The water-cooled module is located on the goniometer arm and can be positioned from -90° to 90° with respect to the incoming beam at a distance of about 200 mm from the sample. To perform absolute scattering experiments the linearity, homogeneity and the angular dependence of the quantum efficiency, including their relative uncertainties, have been investigated. In addition, first results of the performance in wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray reflectometry (XRR) are presented.

Magneto-elastic Effects in $\text{Tb}_{3}\text{Ga}_{5}\text{O}_{12}$

We report new results for the elastic constants studied in Faraday and Cotton-Mouton geometry in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (TGG), a frustrated magnetic substance with strong spin-phonon interaction and remarkable crystal-electric-field (CEF) effects. We analyze the data in the framework of CEF theory taking into account the individual surroundings of the six inequivalent Tb$^{3+}$-ion positions. This theory describes both, elastic constants in the magnetic field and as a function of temperature. Moreover we present sound-attenuation data for the acoustic Cotton-Mouton effect in TGG.

Magnetization, Magnetic Susceptibility and ESR in Tb3Ga5O12

We report on the measurement of the magnetic susceptibility and of ESR transitions in the garnet substance Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ (TGG). The results are compared with a calculation in the framework of crystal field theory for the orthorhombic surroundings of the six inequivalent Tb ions of TGG. We also present a calculation of the magnetization for the three main crystal directions.

Viscous tilting and production of vorticity in homogeneous turbulence

Viscous depletion of vorticity is an essential and well known property of turbulent flows, balancing, in the mean, the net vorticity production associated with the vortex stretching mechanism. In this letter we however demonstrate that viscous effects are not restricted to a mere destruction process, but play a more complex role in vorticity dynamics that is as important as vortex stretching. Based on results from particle tracking experiments (3D-PTV) and direct numerical simulation (DNS) of homogeneous and quasi isotropic turbulence, we show that the viscous term in the vorticity equation can also locally induce production of vorticity and changes of its orientation (viscous tilting).

Magnetic Resonance in the Spin-Peierls compound $α'-NaV_2O_5$

We present results from magnetic resonance measurements for 75-350 GHz in $α$'-NaV$_{2}$O$_{5}$. The temperature dependence of the integrated intensity indicates that we observe transitions in the excited state. A quantitative description gives resonances in the triplet state at high symmetry points of the excitation spectrum of this Spin-Peierls compound. This energy has the same temperature dependence as the Spin-Peierls gap. Similarities and differences with the other inorganic compound CuGeO$_{3}$ are discussed.
