Thermal conductivity across the metal-insulator transition in single crystalline hyperkagome Na$_{3+x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$

The hyperkagome antiferromagnet Na$_{4}$Ir$_3$O$_8$ represents the first genuine candidate for the realisation of a three-dimensional quantum spin-liquid. It can also be doped towards a metallic state, thus offering a rare opportunity to explore the nature of the metal-insulator transition in correlated, frustrated magnets. Here we report thermodynamic and transport measurements in both metallic and weakly insulating single crystals down to 150 mK. While in the metallic sample the phonon thermal conductivity ($κ^{ph}$) is almost in the boundary scattering regime, in the insulating sample we find a large reduction $κ^{ph}$ over a very wide temperature range. This result can be ascribed to the scattering of phonons off nanoscale disorder or off the gapless magnetic excitations that are seen in the low-temperature specific heat. This works highlights the peculiarity of the metal-insulator transition in Na$_{3+x}$Ir$_3$O$_8$ and demonstrates the importance of the coupling between lattice and spin degrees of freedom in the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling.

Doping of Bi2Te3 using electron irradiation

Electron irradiation is investigated as a way to dope the topological insulator Bi2Te3. For this, p-type Bi2Te3 single crystals have been irradiated with 2.5 MeV electrons at room temperature and electrical measurements have been performed in-situ as well as ex-situ in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The defects created by irradiation act as electron donors allowing the compensation of the initial hole-type conductivity of the material as well as the conversion of the conductivity from p- to n-type. The changes in carrier concentration are investigated using Hall effect and Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations, clearly observable in the p-type samples before irradiation, but also after the irradiation-induced conversion of the conductivity to n-type. The SdH patterns observed for the magnetic field along the trigonal axis can be entirely explained assuming the contribution of only one valence and conduction band, respectively, and Zeeman-splitting of the orbital levels.

Magnetothermoelectric properties of Bi2Se3

We present a study of entropy transport in Bi2Se3 at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. In the zero-temperature limit, the magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient quantitatively tracks the Fermi temperature of the 3D Fermi surface at Γ-point as the carrier concentration changes by two orders of magnitude (10$^{17}$ to 10$^{19}$cm$^{-3}$). In high magnetic fields, the Nernst response displays giant quantum oscillations indicating that this feature is not exclusive to compensated semi-metals. A comprehensive analysis of the Landau Level spectrum firmly establishes a large $g$-factor in this material and a substantial decrease of the Fermi energy with increasing magnetic field across the quantum limit. Thus, the presence of bulk carriers significantly affects the spectrum of the intensively debated surface states in Bi2Se3 and related materials.

2D orbital-like magnetic order in ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$

In high temperature copper oxides superconductors, a novel magnetic order associated with the pseudogap phase has been identified in two different cuprate families over a wide region of temperature and doping. We here report the observation below 120 K of a similar magnetic ordering in the archetypal cuprate ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$ (LSCO) system for x=0.085. In contrast to the previous reports, the magnetic ordering in LSCO is {\it\bf only} short range with an in-plane correlation length of $\sim$ 10 Å and is bidimensional (2D). Such a less pronounced order suggests an interaction with other electronic instabilities. In particular, LSCO also exhibits a strong tendency towards stripes ordering at the expense of the superconducting state.

Thermoelectric response of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$: evidence for strong correlation and low carrier density

We present a study of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ extended up to 28 T. The large magnitude of the Seebeck coefficient in the optimally doped sample tracks a remarkably low normalized Fermi temperature, which, like other correlated superconductors, is only one order of magnitude larger than T$_c$. We combine our data with other experimentally measured coefficients of the system to extract a set of self-consistent parameters, which identify Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{0.6}$Se$_{0.4}$ as a low-density correlated superconductor barely in the clean limit. The system is subject to strong superconducting fluctuations with a sizeable vortex Nernst signal in a wide temperature window.

Observation of Magnetic Order in a ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ Superconductor

Polarized beam neutron scattering measurements on a highly perfect crystal of ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ show a distinct magnetic transition with an onset at about 235K, the temperature expected for the pseudogap transition. The moment is found to be about 0.1 $μ_B$ for each sublattice and have a correlation length of at least 75 Å. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2$β$ =0.37$\pm$ 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.

Dispersion of the odd magnetic resonant mode in near-optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar doping level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.
