Pseudospin-phonon pretransitional dynamics in lead halide hybrid perovskites

The low frequency lattice vibrations and relaxations are investigated in single crystals of the four 3D hybrid organolead perovskites, MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $α$-FAPbI$_3$, at the Brillouin zone center using Raman and Brillouin scattering and at the zone boundary using inelastic neutron scattering. The temperature dependence of the PbX$_6$ lattice modes in the four compounds can be renormalized into universal curves, highlighting a common vibrational dynamics at the cubic to tetragonal transition. In particular, no soft vibration is observed excluding a displacive-like transitional dynamics. The reorientational (pseudospin) motions of the molecular cations exhibit a seemingly order-disorder character recalling that of plastic crystals, but attributed to a secondary order-parameter. At ultra-low frequency, a quasi-elastic component evidenced by Brillouin scattering and associated to the unresolved central peak observed in neutron scattering, is attributed to center of mass anharmonic motions and rattling of the molecular cations in the perovskite cavities. Its partially unexpressed critical behavior at the transition points toward the general importance of defects in HOPs preventing the net divergence of order parameter correlations at the critical temperatures.

Direct evidence of weakly dispersed and strongly anharmonic optical phonons in hybrid perovskites

Hybrid organolead perovskites (HOP) have started to establish themselves in the field of photovoltaics, mainly due to their great optoelectronic properties and steadily improving solar cell efficiency. Study of the lattice dynamics is key in understanding the electron-phonon interactions at play, responsible for such properties. Here, we investigate, via neutron and Raman spectroscopies, the optical phonon spectrum of four different HOP single crystals: MAPbBr$_3$, FAPbBr$_3$, MAPbI$_3$, and $α$-FAPbI$_3$. Low temperature spectra reveal weakly dispersive optical phonons, at energies as low as 2-5~meV, which seem to be the origin of the limit of the charge carriers mobilities in these materials. The temperature dependence of our neutron spectra shows as well a significant anharmonic behaviour, resulting in optical phonon overdamping at temperatures as low as 80~K, questionning the validity of the quasi-particle picture for the low energy optical modes at room temperature where the solar cells operate.

Commensurate antiferromagnetic excitations as a signature of the pseudogap in the tetragonal high-Tc cuprate HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

Antiferromagnetic correlations have been argued to be the cause of the d-wave superconductivity and the pseudogap phenomena exhibited by the cuprates. Although the antiferromagnetic response in the pseudogap state has been reported for a number of compounds, there exists no information for structurally simple HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. Here we report neutron scattering results for HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (superconducting transition temperature T$_c$ $\sim$ 71 K, pseudogap temperature T* $\sim$ 305 K) that demonstrate the absence of the two most prominent features of the magnetic excitation spectrum of the cuprates: the X-shaped 'hourglass' response and the resonance mode in the superconducting state. Instead, the response is Y-shaped, gapped, and significantly enhanced below T*, and hence a prominent signature of the pseudogap state.

Phonon and Magnetic Excitations in Superconducting Ca$_{10}$Pt$_4$As$_8$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$

Inelastic neutron scattering studies have been carried out on selected phonons and magnetic excitations of a crystal of superconducting (SC) Ca$_{10}$Pt$_4$As$_8$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$ with the onset transition temperature $T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 33 K to investigate the role that orbital fluctuations play in the Cooper pairing. The spectral weight of the magnetic excitations, $χ''({\bm Q}, ω)$ at ${\bm Q} = {\bm Q}_{\rm M}$ (magnetic $Γ$ points) is suppressed (enhanced) in the relatively low (high) $ω$ region. The maximum of the enhancement is located at $ω= ω_{\rm p} \sim$ 18 meV at temperature $T = 3$ K corresponding to the $ω_{\rm p}/k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}^{\rm onset} \sim$ 6.3. This large value is rather favorable to the orbital-fluctuation mechanism of the superconductivity with the so-called $S_{++}$ symmetry. In the phonon measurements, we observed slight softening of the in-plane transverse acoustic mode corresponding to the elastic constant $C_{66}$. This softening starts at $T$ well above the superconducting $T_{\rm c}$, as $T$ decreases. An anomalously large increase in the phonon spectral weight of in-plane optical modes was observed in the range of $35 < ω< 40$ meV with decreasing $T$ from far above $T_{\rm c}$. Because this $ω$ region mainly corresponds to the in-plane vibrations of Fe atoms, the finding presents information on the coupling between the orbital fluctuation of the Fe 3$d$ electrons and lattice system, useful for studying possible roles of the orbital fluctuation in the pairing mechanism and appearance of the so-called nematic phase.

Strong Interplay between Stripe Spin Fluctuations, Nematicity and Superconductivity in FeSe

Elucidating the microscopic origin of nematic order in iron-based superconducting materials is important because the interactions that drive nematic order may also mediate the Cooper pairing. Nematic order breaks fourfold rotational symmetry in the iron plane, which is believed to be driven by either orbital or spin degrees of freedom. However, as the nematic phase often develops at a temperature just above or coincides with a stripe magnetic phase transition, experimentally determining the dominant driving force of nematic order is difficult. Here, we use neutron scattering to study structurally the simplest iron-based superconductor FeSe, which displays a nematic (orthorhombic) phase transition at $T_s=90$ K, but does not order antiferromagnetically. Our data reveal substantial stripe spin fluctuations, which are coupled with orthorhombicity and are enhanced abruptly on cooling to below $T_s$. Moreover, a sharp spin resonance develops in the superconducting state, whose energy (~4 meV) is consistent with an electron boson coupling mode revealed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, thereby suggesting a spin fluctuation-mediated sign-changing pairing symmetry. By normalizing the dynamic susceptibility into absolute units, we show that the magnetic spectral weight in FeSe is comparable to that of the iron arsenides. Our findings support recent theoretical proposals that both nematicity and superconductivity are driven by spin fluctuations.

Characterization of the Intra-Unit-Cell magnetic order in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

As in YBa2Cu3O6+x and HgBa2CuO8+d, the pseudo-gap state in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d is characterized by the existence of an intra-unit-cell magnetic order revealed by polarized neutron scattering technique. We report here a supplementary set of polarized neutron scattering measurements for which the direction of the magnetic moment is determined and the magnetic intensity is calibrated in absolute units. The new data allow a close comparison between bilayer systems YBa2Cu3O6+x and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d and rise important questions concerning the range of the magnetic correlations and the role of disorder around optimal doping.

Interplay between antiferrodistortive, ferroelectric and superconducting instabilities in Sr_{1-x}Ca_{x}$TiO_{3-δ}

SrTiO$_{3}$ undergoes a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition at 105K. This antiferrodistortive transition is believed to be in competition with incipient ferroelectricity. Substituting strontium by isovalent calcium induces a ferroelectric order. Introducing mobile electrons to the system by chemical non-isovalent doping, on the other hand, leads to the emergence of a dilute metal with a superconducting ground state. The link between superconductivity and the other two instabilities is an open question, which gathers momentum in the context of the growing popularity of the paradigm linking unconventional superconductors and quantum critical points. We present a set of specific-heat, neutron-scattering and dielectric permittivity and polarization measurements on Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3}$ ($0<x<0.009$) and a low-temperature electric conductivity in Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$. Calcium substitution was found to enhance the transition temperature for both anti-ferrodistortive and ferroelectric transitions. Moreover, we find that Sr$_{0.9978}$Ca$_{0.0022}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ has a superconducting ground state. The critical temperature in this rare case of a superconductor with a ferroelectric parent, is slightly lower than in SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ of comparable carrier concentration. A three-dimensional phase diagram for Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$TiO$_{3-δ}$ tracking the three transition temperatures as a function of x and $δ$ results from this study, in which ferroelectric and superconducting ground states are not immediate neighbours.

Temperature-Dependent Interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction and Single-Ion Anisotropy in Multiferroic BiFeO$_3$

Low-energy magnon excitations in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ were measured in detail as a function of temperature around several Brillouin zone centers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. Unique features around 1 meV are directly associated with the interplay of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a small single-ion anisotropy. The temperature dependence of these and the exchange interactions were determined by fitting the measured magnon dispersion with spin-wave calculations. The spectra best fits an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy and the deduced exchange and anisotropy parameters enable us to determine the anharmonicity of the magnetic cycloid. We then draw a direct connection between the changes in the parameters of spin Hamiltonian with temperature and the physical properties and structural deformations of BiFeO$_3$.

Evidence for Intra-Unit-Cell magnetic order in the pseudo-gap state of high-Tc cuprates

The existence of the mysterious pseudo-gap state in the phase diagram of copper oxide superconductors and its interplay with unconventional {\it d-wave} superconductivity has been a long standing issue for more than a decade. There is now a growing number of experimental indications that the pseudo-gap phase actually corresponds to a symmetry breaking state. In his theory for cuprates, C. M. Varma proposes that the pseudo-gap is a new state of matter associated with the spontaneous appearance of circulating current loops within $\rm CuO_2$ unit cell. This intra-unit-cell order breaks time reversal symmetry, but preserves lattice translation invariance. Polarized elastic neutron scattering measurements provide evidence for an intra-unit-cell magnetic order inside the pseudo-gap state. This order could be produced by the orbital-like magnetic moments induced by the circulating current loops. The magnetic order displays the same characteristic features in $\rm HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ}$, $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$ and $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$ demonstrating that this genuine phase is ubiquitous of the pseudo-gap of high temperature copper oxide materials. We review the main properties characterizing this intra-unit-cell magnetic order and discuss its interplay or competition with other spin and charge instabilities.

Spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in the spin ladder series $Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}$ by inelastic neutron scattering

The spin gap evolution upon Ca doping in Sr14-xCaxCu24O41 was systematically investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. We discover that the singlet-triplet spin gap excitation survives in this series with x up to 13, indicating the singlet dimer ground state in these compounds. This observation corrects the previous speculation that the spin gap collapses at x~13 by the NMR technique. The strong intensity modulation along QH in x=0 gradually evolves into a Q-independent feature in x>11. This could be attributed to the localized Cu moment magnetism developing into an itinerant magnetism with increasing x. It is a surprise that the spin gap persists in the normal state of this spin ladder system with metallic behaviour, which evidences the possibility of magnetically-mediated carrier pairing mechanism in a two-leg spin ladder lattice.

Evidence for Intra-Unit-Cell magnetic order in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Polarized elastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed in the bilayer copper oxide system Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, providing evidence for an intra unit cell (IUC) magnetic order inside the pseudo-gap state. That shows time reversal symmetry breaking in that state as already reported in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d through dichroism in circularly polarized photoemission experiments. The magnetic order displays the same characteristic features as the one previously reported for monolayer HgBa2CuO4+d and bilayer YBa2Cu3O6+x, demonstrating that this genuine phase is ubiquitous of the pseudo-gap of high temperature copper oxide materials.

Neutron scattering study of ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 under pressure

Ferroelectric phase transition in the semiconductor Sn2P2S6 single crystal has been studied by means of neutron scattering in the pressure-temperature range adjacent to the anticipated tricritical Lifshitz point (p=0.18GPa, T=296K). The observations reveal a direct ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in the whole investigated pressure range (0.18 - 0.6GPa). These results are in a clear disagreement with phase diagrams assumed in numerous earlier works, according to which a hypothetical intermediate incommensurate phase extends over several or even tens of degrees in the 0.5GPa pressure range. Temperature dependence of the anisotropic quasielastic diffuse scattering suggests that polarization fluctuations present above TC are strongly reduced in the ordered phase. Still, the temperature dependence of the (200) Bragg reflection intensity at p=0.18GPa can be remarkably well modeled assuming the order-parameter amplitude growth according to the power law with logarithmic corrections predicted for a uniaxial ferroelectric transition at the tricritical Lifshitz point.

Two Ising-like magnetic excitations in a single-layer cuprate superconductor

There exists increasing evidence that the phase diagram of the high-transition temperature (Tc) cuprate superconductors is controlled by a quantum critical point. One distinct theoretical proposal is that, with decreasing hole-carrier concentration, a transition occurs to an ordered state with two circulating orbital currents per CuO2 square. Below the 'pseudogap' temperature T* (T* > Tc), the theory predicts a discrete order parameter and two weakly-dispersive magnetic excitations in structurally simple compounds that should be measurable by neutron scattering. Indeed, novel magnetic order and one such excitation were recently observed. Here, we demonstrate for tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d the existence of a second excitation with local character, consistent with the theory. The excitations mix with conventional antiferromagnetic fluctuations, which points toward a unifying picture of magnetism in the cuprates that will likely require a multi-band description.

Anisotropic critical magnetic fluctuations in the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe

We report neutron scattering measurements of critical magnetic excitations in the weakly ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe. The strong non-Landau damping of the excitations we observe, although unusual has been found in another related ferromagnet, UGe2 at zero pressure. However, we also find there is a significant anisotropy of the magnetic correlation length in UCoGe that contrasts with an almost isotropic length for UGe2. The values of the magnetic correlation length and damping are found to be compatible with superconductivity on small Fermi surface pockets. The anisotropy may be important to explain why UCoGe is a superconductor at zero pressure while UGe2 is not.

Dispersion and damping of zone-boundary magnons in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor CePt3Si

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is employed to study damped spin-wave excitations in the noncentrosymmetric heavy-fermion superconductor CePt3Si along the antiferromagnetic Brillouin-zone boundary in the low-temperature magnetically ordered state. Measurements along the (1/2 1/2 L) and (H H 1/2-H) reciprocal-space directions reveal deviations in the spin-wave dispersion from the previously reported model. Broad asymmetric shape of the peaks in energy signifies strong spin-wave damping by interactions with the particle-hole continuum. Their energy width exhibits no evident anomalies as a function of momentum along the (1/2 1/2 L) direction, which could be attributed to Fermi-surface nesting effects, implying the absence of pronounced commensurate nesting vectors at the magnetic zone boundary. In agreement with a previous study, we find no signatures of the superconducting transition in the magnetic excitation spectrum, such as a magnetic resonant mode or a superconducting spin gap, either at the magnetic ordering wavevector (0 0 1/2) or at the zone boundary. However, the low superconducting transition temperature in this material still leaves the possibility of such features being weak and therefore hidden below the incoherent background at energies ~0.1 meV, precluding their detection by INS.

Evidence for competing magnetic instabilities in underdoped $\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$

We report a polarized neutron scattering study of the orbital-like magnetic order in strongly underdoped ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$. Their hole doping levels are located on both sides of the critical doping $p_{MI}$ of a metal-insulator transition inferred from transport measurements. Our study reveals a drop down of the orbital-like order slightly below $p_{MI}$ with a steep decrease of both the ordering temperature $T_{mag}$ and the ordered moment. Above $p_{MI}$, substitution of quantum impurities does not change $T_{mag}$, whereas it lowers significantly the bulk ordered moment. The modifications of the orbital-like magnetic order are interpreted in terms of a competition with electronic liquid crystal phases around $p_{MI}$. This competition gives rise to a mixed magnetic state in ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.45}}$ and a phase separation in ${\rm YBa_2(Cu_{0.98}Zn_{0.02})_3O_{6.6}}$.

2D orbital-like magnetic order in ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$

In high temperature copper oxides superconductors, a novel magnetic order associated with the pseudogap phase has been identified in two different cuprate families over a wide region of temperature and doping. We here report the observation below 120 K of a similar magnetic ordering in the archetypal cuprate ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$ (LSCO) system for x=0.085. In contrast to the previous reports, the magnetic ordering in LSCO is {\it\bf only} short range with an in-plane correlation length of $\sim$ 10 Å and is bidimensional (2D). Such a less pronounced order suggests an interaction with other electronic instabilities. In particular, LSCO also exhibits a strong tendency towards stripes ordering at the expense of the superconducting state.

Incommensurate magnetic order and dynamics induced by spinless impurities in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$

We report an inelastic-neutron-scattering and muon-spin-relaxation study of the effect of 2% spinless (Zn) impurities on the magnetic order and dynamics of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$, an underdoped high-temperature superconductor that exhibits a prominent spin-pseudogap in its normal state. Zn substitution induces static magnetic order at low temperatures and triggers a large-scale spectral-weight redistribution from the magnetic resonant mode at 38 meV into uniaxial, incommensurate spin excitations with energies well below the spin-pseudogap. These observations indicate a competition between incommensurate magnetic order and superconductivity close to a quantum critical point. Comparison to prior data on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ suggests that this behavior is universal for the layered copper oxides and analogous to impurity-induced magnetic order in one-dimensional quantum magnets.

Magnetic excitations in multiferroic LuMnO3 studied by inelastic neutron scattering

We present data on the magnetic and magneto-elastic coupling in the hexagonal multiferroic manganite LuMnO3 from inelastic neutron scattering, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements. We measured the magnon dispersion along the main symmetry directions and used this data to determine the principal exchange parameters from a spin-wave model. An analysis of the magnetic anisotropy in terms of the crystal field acting on the Mn is presented. We compare the results for LuMnO3 with data on other hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.

Neutron scattering study and analytical description of the spin excitation spectrum of twin-free YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6)

We present a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the magnetic excitations in twin-free YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6) (Tc=61 K) for 5 K < T < 290 K. Taking full account of the instrumental resolution, we derive analytical model functions for the magnetic susceptibility chi''(Q,omega) at T = 5 K and 70 K in absolute units. Our models are supported by previous results on similar samples and are valid at least up to excitation energies of omega = 100 meV. The detailed knowledge of chi''(Q,omega) permits quantitative comparison to the results of complementary techniques including angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), as demonstrated in Dahm et al., Nature Phys. 5, 217, (2009). Based on accurate modeling of the effect of the resolution function on the detected intensity, we determine important intrinsic features of the spin excitation spectrum, with a focus on the differences above and below Tc. In particular, at T = 70 K the spectrum exhibits a pronounced twofold in-plane anisotropy at low energies, which evolves towards fourfold rotational symmetry at high energies, and the relation dispersion is "Y"-shaped. At T = 5 K, on the other hand, the spectrum develops a continuous, downward-dispersing "resonant" mode with weaker in-plane anisotropy. We understand this topology change as arising from the competition between superconductivity and the same electronic liquid-crystal state as observed in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.45). We discuss our data in the context of different theoretical scenarios suggested to explain this state.

Neutron scattering study of the magnetic phase diagram of underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x)

We present a neutron triple-axis and resonant spin-echo spectroscopy study of the spin correlations in untwinned YBCO crystals with x= 0.3, 0.35, and 0.45 as a function of temperature and magnetic field. As the temperature T approaches 0, all samples exhibit static incommensurate magnetic order with propagation vector along the a-direction in the CuO2 planes. The incommensurability delta increases monotonically with hole concentration, as it does in LSCO. However, delta is generally smaller than in LSCO at the same doping level. The intensity of the incommensurate Bragg reflections increases with magnetic field for YBCO(6.45) (superconducting Tc = 35 K), whereas it is field-independent for YBCO(6.35) (Tc = 10 K). These results suggest that YBCO samples with x ~ 0.5 exhibit incommensurate magnetic order in the high fields used for the recent quantum oscillation experiments on this system, which likely induces a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. We present neutron spin-echo measurements (with energy resolution ~ 1 micro-eV) for T > 0 that demonstrate a continuous thermal broadening of the incommensurate magnetic Bragg reflections into a quasielastic peak centered at excitation energy E = 0, consistent with the zero-temperature transition expected for a two-dimensional spin system with full spin-rotation symmetry. Measurements on YBCO(6.45) with a triple-axis spectrometer (with energy resolution ~ 100 micro-eV) yield a crossover temperature T_SDW ~ 30 K for the onset of quasi-static magnetic order. Upon further heating, the wavevector characterizing low-energy spin excitations approaches the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector, and the incommensurability vanishes in an order-parameter-like fashion at an "electronic liquid-crystal" onset temperature T_ELC ~ 150 K. Both T_SDW and T_ELC increase continuously as the Mott-insulating phase is approached with decreasing doping level.

Normal-State Spin Dynamics and Temperature-Dependent Spin Resonance Energy in an Optimally Doped Iron Arsenide Superconductor

The proximity of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the phase diagram of iron arsenides, the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling and the "resonance peak" in the superconducting spin excitation spectrum have fostered the hypothesis of magnetically mediated Cooper pairing. However, since most theories of superconductivity are based on a pairing boson of sufficient spectral weight in the normal state, detailed knowledge of the spin excitation spectrum above the superconducting transition temperature Tc is required to assess the viability of this hypothesis. Using inelastic neutron scattering we have studied the spin excitations in optimally doped BaFe1.85Co0.15As2 (Tc = 25 K) over a wide range of temperatures and energies. We present the results in absolute units and find that the normal state spectrum carries a weight comparable to underdoped cuprates. In contrast to cuprates, however, the spectrum agrees well with predictions of the theory of nearly antiferromagnetic metals, without complications arising from a pseudogap or competing incommensurate spin-modulated phases. We also show that the temperature evolution of the resonance energy follows the superconducting energy gap, as expected from conventional Fermi-liquid approaches. Our observations point to a surprisingly simple theoretical description of the spin dynamics in the iron arsenides and provide a solid foundation for models of magnetically mediated superconductivity.

Observation of Magnetic Order in a ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ Superconductor

Polarized beam neutron scattering measurements on a highly perfect crystal of ${\rm YBa_2Cu_3O_{6.6}}$ show a distinct magnetic transition with an onset at about 235K, the temperature expected for the pseudogap transition. The moment is found to be about 0.1 $μ_B$ for each sublattice and have a correlation length of at least 75 Å. We found the critical exponent for the magnetic neutron intensity to be 2$β$ =0.37$\pm$ 0.12. This is the proper range for the class of transition that has no specific heat divergence possibly explaining why none is found at the pseudogap transition.

Dispersion of the odd magnetic resonant mode in near-optimally doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

We report a neutron scattering study of the spin excitation spectrum in the superconducting state of slightly overdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d system (Tc=87 K). We focus on the dispersion of the resonance peak in the superconducting state that is due to a S=1 collective mode. The measured spin excitation spectrum bears a strong similarity to the spectrum of the YBa2Cu3O6+x system for a similar doping level i.e. x= 0.95-1), which consists of intersecting upward- and downward-dispersing branches. A close comparison of the threshold of the electron-hole spin flip continuum, deduced from angle resolved photo-emission measurements in the same system, indicates that the magnetic response in the superconducting state is confined, in both energy and momentum, below the gapped Stoner continuum. In contrast to YBa2Cu3O6+x, the spin excitation spectrum is broader than the experimental resolution. In the framework of an itinerant-electron model, we quantitatively relate this intrinsic energy width to the superconducting gap distribution observed in scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments. Our study further suggests a significant in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic response.

In-plane anisotropy of spin excitations in the normal and superconducting states of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

A detailed inelastic neutron scattering study of the in-plane anisotropy of magnetic excitations in twin-free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c =$ 61 K) reveals that the spin excitation spectra in the superconducting and normal states are qualitatively different. Below $T_c$, the spectrum consists of upward- and downward-dispersing branches with modest in-plane anisotropy merging at an energy $E_{res} =$ 37.5 meV. In the normal state, the singularity at $E_{res}$ disappears, and the spectrum exhibits a steep dispersion with a strongly anisotropic in-plane geometry. These data have important implications for models based on static or dynamic "stripe" order of spins and charges.

Odd and even magnetic resonant modes in highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+delta}

We present inelastic neutron scattering data on highly overdoped Bi_2 Sr_2 Ca Cu_2 O_{8+δ} single crystals with superconducting transition temperature T_C=70 K and, for comparison, a nearly optimally doped crystal with T_C=87 K. In both samples, magnetic resonant modes with odd and even symmetry under exchange of the two CuO_2 layers in the unit cell are observed. In the overdoped sample, the linewidth of the odd mode is reduced compared with the optimally doped sample. This finding is discussed in conjunction with recent evidence for intrinsic inhomogeneities in this compound. The data on odd and even resonant excitations are otherwise fully consistent with trends established on the basis of data on YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}. This confirms the universality of these findings and extends them into the highly overdoped regime of the phase diagram.

Antiferromagnetic ordering in a 90 K copper oxide superconductor

Using elastic neutron scattering, we evidence a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) order (AF) in the superconducting (SC) high-$\rm T_c$ cuprate $\rm YBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Co_y)_3O_{7+δ}$ (y=0.013, $\rm T_c$=93 K). As in the Co-free system, the spin excitation spectrum is dominated by a magnetic resonance peak at 41 meV but with a reduced spectral weight. The substitution of Co thus leads to a state where AF and SC cohabit showing that the CuO$_2$ plane is a highly antiferromagnetically polarizable medium even for a sample where T$_c$ remains optimum.
