Investigation of superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system PrPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_{x}$

We report a study of the superconducting and normal-state properties of the filled-skutterudite system PrPt$_{4}$Ge$_{12-x}$Sb$_x$. Polycrystalline samples with Sb concentrations up to $x =$ 5 were synthesized and investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. We observed a suppression of superconductivity with increasing Sb substitution up to $x =$ 4, above which, no signature of superconductivity was observed down to 140 mK. The Sommerfeld coefficient, $γ$, of superconducting specimens decreases with increasing $x$ up to $x =$ 3, suggesting that superconductivity may depend on the density of electronic states in this system. The specific heat for $x =$ 0.5 exhibits an exponential temperature dependence in the superconducting state, reminiscent of a nodeless superconducting energy gap. We observed evidence for a weak "rattling" mode associated with the Pr ions, characterized by an Einstein temperature $Θ_{\mathrm{E}} \sim$ 60 K for 0 $\leq x \leq$ 5; however, the rattling mode may not play any role in suppressing superconductivity.

Robust Upward Dispersion of the Neutron Spin Resonance in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_5$

The neutron spin resonance is a collective magnetic excitation that appears in copper oxide, iron pnictide, and heavy fermion unconventional superconductors. Although the resonance is commonly associated with a spin-exciton due to the $d$($s^{\pm}$)-wave symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, it has also been proposed to be a magnon-like excitation appearing in the superconducting state. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to demonstrate that the resonance in the heavy fermion superconductor Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_5$ with $x=0,0.05,0.3$ has a ring-like upward dispersion that is robust against Yb-doping. By comparing our experimental data with random phase approximation calculation using the electronic structure and the momentum dependence of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting gap determined from scanning tunneling microscopy for CeCoIn$_5$, we conclude the robust upward dispersing resonance mode in Ce$_{1-x}$Yb$_{x}$CoIn$_5$ is inconsistent with the downward dispersion predicted within the spin-exciton scenario.

Pressure-Induced Phase Transition in La$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$

Electrical resistivity measurements on La$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ ($x$ = 0.1, 0.3, 0.6, 0.8) have been performed under applied pressures up to 2.6 GPa from 2 K to room temperature. The superconducting transition temperature $T$$_{c}$ of each sample significantly increases at a Sm-concentration dependent pressure $P$$_{\rm t}$, indicating a pressure-induced phase transition from a low-$T$$_{c}$ to a high-$T$$_{c}$ phase. The compounds that have higher Sm concentrations have higher $T$$_{c}$ values at ambient pressure; however, the $T$$_{c}$ values at $P$ $>$ $P$$_{\rm t}$ decrease with $x$ and $P$$_{\rm t}$ shifts to higher pressures with Sm substitution. In the normal state, semiconducting-like behavior is suppressed and metallic conduction is induced with increasing pressure in all of the samples. These results suggest that the pressure dependence of $T$$_{c}$ for the BiS$_{2}$-based superconductors is related to the lattice parameters at ambient pressure and enable us to estimate the evolution of $T$$_{c}$ for SmO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ under pressure.

The CeMIn5 (M = Rh, Ir and Co) System and the Single Energy Scale Model of Metamagnetism

For a decade and a half, CeCoIn$_5$ and related alloys have served as a rich playground to explore the interplay between magnetism and unconventional superconductivity. Despite this extended study, the presence/absence of metamagnetism (MM) in this ternary system remains as an unresolved issue. Here we show that the linear and non-linear magnetic response in CeMIn$_5$ (M = Rh, Ir and Co) can be understood within the context of the recently proposed single energy scale (SES) model of MM. New measurements of the third-order susceptibility, $χ_3$, in CeCoIn$_5$ are presented and together with the known systematics of the linear susceptibility in all three compounds, are shown to be consistent with the SES model. Predictions are made for the MM critical field in CeCoIn$_5$ and the fifth-order susceptibility, $χ_5$.

Chemical pressure tuning of URu$_2$Si$_2$ via isoelectronic substitution of Ru with Fe

We have used specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ for Fe concentrations $x$ $\leq$ 0.7 to establish that chemical substitution of Ru with Fe acts as "chemical pressure" $P_{ch}$ as previously proposed by Kanchanavatee et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 245122 (2011)] based on bulk measurements on polycrystalline samples. Notably, neutron diffraction reveals a sharp increase of the uranium magnetic moment at $x=0.1$, reminiscent of the behavior at the "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phase transition observed at a pressure $P_x\approx$ 0.5-0.7~GPa in URu$_2$Si$_2$. Using the unit cell volume determined from our measurements and an isothermal compressibility $κ_{T} = 5.2 \times 10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$ for URu$_2$Si$_2$, we determine the chemical pressure $P_{ch}$ in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ as a function of $x$. The resulting temperature $T$-chemical pressure $P_{ch}$ phase diagram for URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ is in agreement with the established temperature $T$-external pressure $P$ phase diagram of URu$_2$Si$_2$.

Effect of yttrium substitution on the superconducting properties of the system La$_{1-\textit{x}}$Y$_{\textit{x}}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$

We present the effect of yttrium substitution on superconductivity in the La$_{1-\textit{x}}$Y$_{\textit{x}}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ system. Polycrystalline samples with nominal Y concentrations up to 40% were synthesized and characterized via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. Y substitution reduces the lattice parameter \textit{a} and unit cell volume \textit{V}, and a correlation between the lattice parameter \textit{c}, the La-O-La bond angle, and the superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ is observed. The chemical pressure induced by Y substitution for La produces neither the high-$T_c$ superconducting phase nor the structural phase transition seen in LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ under externally applied pressure.

Enhancement of Superconductivity in La$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_2$

The superconducting and normal-state properties of La$_{1-x}$Sm$_{x}$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ (0.1 $\leqslant$ $x$ $\leqslant$ 0.9) have been studied via electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. By using suitable synthesis conditions, Sm exhibits considerable solubility into the CeOBiS$_{2}$-type LaO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ lattice. In addition to a considerable enhancement of the superconducting volume fraction, it is found that the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ is dramatically enhanced with increasing Sm concentration to 5.4 K at $x$ = 0.8. These results suggest that $T_{c}$ for SmO$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ could be as high as $\sim$6.2 K and comparably high $T_{c}$ values might also be obtained in $Ln$O$_{0.5}$F$_{0.5}$BiS$_{2}$ ($Ln$ = Eu - Tm) if these compounds can be synthesized.

Evolution of the superconducting energy gap structure concomitant with Fermi surface reconstruction in the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

The London penetration depth, $λ(T)$ was measured in single crystals of Ce$_{1-x}R_x$CoIn$_5$, $R$=La, Nd and Yb down to 50~mK ($T_c/T \sim$50) using a tunnel-diode resonator. In the cleanest samples $Δλ(T)$ is best described by the power law, $Δλ(T) \propto T^{n}$, with $n \sim 1$, consistent with line nodes. Substitutions of Ce with La, Nd and Yb lead to similar monotonic suppressions of $T_c$, however the effects on $Δλ(T)$ differ. While La and Nd doping results in an increase of the exponent to $n \sim 2$, as expected for a dirty nodal superconductor, Yb doping leads to $n > 3$, inconsistent with nodes, suggesting a change from nodal to nodeless superconductivity where Fermi surface topology changes were reported, implying that the nodal structure and Fermi surface topology are closely linked.

From local moment to mixed-valence regime in Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 alloys

We investigated the onset of the many-body coherence in the f-orbital single crystalline alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 through thermodynamic and magneto-transport measurements. Our study shows the evolution of the many-body electronic state as the Kondo lattice of Ce moments is transformed into an array of Ce impurities. Specifically, we observe a smooth crossover from the predominantly localized Ce moment regime to the predominantly itinerant Yb f-electronic states regime for about 50% of Yb doping. Our analysis of the residual resistivity data unveils the presence of correlations between Yb ions, while from our analysis of specific heat data we conclude that for 0.65<x<0.775, ytterbium f-electrons strongly interact with the conduction electrons while the Ce moments remain completely decoupled. The sub-linear temperature dependence of resistivity across the whole range of Yb concentrations suggest the presence of a nontrivial scattering mechanism for the conduction electrons.

Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior Close to a Quantum Critical Point in a Ferromagnetic State without Local Moments

A quantum critical point (QCP) occurs upon chemical doping of the weak itinerant ferromagnet Sc_{3.1}In. Remarkable for a system with no local moments, the QCP is accompanied by non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior, manifested in the logarithmic divergence of the specific heat both in the ferro- and the paramagnetic states. Sc_{3.1}In displays critical scaling and NFL behavior in the ferromagnetic state, akin to what had been observed only in f-electron, local moment systems. With doping, critical scaling is observed close to the QCP, as the critical exponents, and delta, gamma and beta have weak composition dependence, with delta nearly twice, and beta almost half of their respective mean-field values. The unusually large paramagnetic moment mu_PM~1.3 mu_B/F.U. is nearly composition-independent. Evidence for strong spin fluctuations, accompanying the QCP at x_c = 0.035 +- 0.005, may be ascribed to the reduced dimensionality of Sc_{3.1}In, associated with the nearly one-dimensional Sc-In chains.

Persistent non-metallic behavior in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7 at high pressures

Iridium-based 5d transition-metal oxides are attractive candidates for the study of correlated electronic states due to the interplay of enhanced crystal-field, Coulomb and spin-orbit interaction energies. At ambient pressure, these conditions promote a novel Jeff = 1/2 Mott insulating state, characterized by a gap of the order of ~0.1 eV. We present high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements of single crystals of Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. While no indications of a pressure-induced metallic state up to 55 GPa were found in Sr2IrO4, a strong decrease of the gap energy and of the resistance of Sr3Ir2O7 between ambient pressure and 104 GPa confirm that this compound is in the proximity of a metal-insulator transition.

Pressure studies of the quantum critical alloy Ce(0.93)Yb(0.07)CoIn5

Here we present our experimental and theoretical study of the effects of pressure on the transport properties of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 with x~0.07. We specifically choose this value of ytterbium concentration because the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point, which separates the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic states at zero temperature, approaches zero, as has been established in previous studies. Our measurements show that pressure further suppresses quantum fluctuations in this alloy, just as it does in the parent compound CeCoIn5. In contrast, the square-root temperature dependent part of resistivity remains insensitive to pressure, indicating that the heavy-quasiparticles are not involved in the scattering processes leading to such a temperature dependent resistivity. We demonstrate that the growth of the coherence temperature with pressure, as well as the decrease of the residual resistivity, can be accurately described by employing the coherent potential approximation for a disordered Kondo lattice.

Probing the superconductivity of PrPt4Ge12 through Ce substitution

We report measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermoelectric power on the system Pr1-xCexPt4Ge12. Superconductivity is suppressed with increasing Ce concentration up to x = 0.5, above which there is no evidence for superconductivity down to 1.1 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ increases with increasing x from 48 mJ/mol K^2 up to 120 mJ/mol K^2 at x = 0.5, indicating an increase in strength of electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures evolves from roughly T^3 for x = 0 to e^(-Δ/T) behavior for x = 0.05 and above, suggesting a crossover from a nodal to a nodeless superconducting energy gap or a transition from multiband to single-band superconductivity. Fermi-liquid behavior is observed throughout the series in low-temperature magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements.

Quantum criticality and superconducting pairing in Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5 alloys

In this paper we review some of our recent experimental and theoretical results on transport and thermodynamic properties of heavy-fermion alloys Ce(1-x)Yb(x)CoIn5. Charge transport measurements under magnetic field and pressure on these single crystalline alloys revealed that: (i) relatively small Yb substitution suppresses the field induced quantum critical point, with a complete suppression for nominal Yb doping x>0.20; (ii) the superconducting transition temperature Tc and Kondo lattice coherence temperature T* decrease with x, yet they remain finite over the wide range of Yb concentrations; (iii) both Tc and T* increase with pressure; (iv) there are two contributions to resistivity, which show different temperature and pressure dependences, implying that both heavy and light quasiparticles contribute to inelastic scattering. We also analyzed theoretically the pressure dependence of both T* and Tc within the composite pairing theory. In the purely static limit, when we ignore the lattice dynamics, we find that the composite pairing mechanism necessarily causes opposite behaviors of T* and Tc with pressure: if T* grows with pressure, Tc must decrease with pressure and vice versa.

Superconductivity of La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and La$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$: A comparative study

We report the electric transport and thermodynamic properties of the skutterudite-related La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and La$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ superconductors. Applying an external pressure to La$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, the resistive superconducting critical temperature Tc decreases, while the critical temperature of La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ is enhanced with increasing pressure. The positive pressure coefficient dTc/dP correlates with a subtle structural transition in La$_3$Co$_4$Sn$_{13}$ and is discussed in the context of lattice instabilities. Specific-heat data show that both compounds are typical BCS superconductors. However, La$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ also exhibits a second superconducting phase at higher temperatures, which is characteristic of inhomogeneous superconductors. We calculate the specific heat for an inhomogeneous superconducting phase, which agrees well with experimental C(T) data for La$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$. We also found that an applied pressure reduces this second superconducting phase.

Enhancement of superconductivity near the pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition in BiS2-based compounds LnO(0.5)F(0.5)BiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd)

Measurements of electrical resistivity were performed between 3 and 300 K at various pressures up to 2.8 GPa on the BiS2-based superconductors LnO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Ln = Pr, Nd). At lower pressures, PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 exhibit superconductivity with critical temperatures Tc of 3.5 and3.9 K, respectively. As pressure is increased, both compounds undergo a transition at a pressure Pt from a low Tc superconducting phase to a high Tc superconducting phase in which Tc reaches maximum values of 7.6 and 6.4 K for PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2, respectively. The pressure-induced transition is characterized by a rapid increase in Tc within a small range in pressure of ~0.3 GPa for both compounds. In the normal state of PrO0.5F0.5BiS2, the transition pressure Pt correlates with the pressure where the suppression of semiconducting behaviour saturates. In the normal state of NdO0.5F0.5BiS2, Pt is coincident with a semiconductor-metal transition. This behaviour is similar to the results recently reported for the LnO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Ln = La, Ce) compounds. We observe that Pt and the size of the jump in Tc between the two superconducting phases both scale with the lanthanide element in LnO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd).

Magneto-Transport Properties of Single Crystalline LaFeAsO

Measurements of magnetization, specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, and magnetoresistance on single crystalline samples of LaFeAsO grown in a NaAs flux are reported. While this material is known to be a semimetal, the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity data presented herein is reminiscent of semiconducting behavior and exhibits distinct features associated with a structural transition and spin density wave (SDW) order. Magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient measurements were performed in magnetic fields up to 9 T applied perpendicular to the basal plane using a van der Pauw configuration. The charge carrier density and mobility indicate that electrons are the majority charge carriers and exhibit features indicative of the structural transition and SDW formation. Low temperature X-ray diffraction measurements have confirmed that the structural transition in these samples occurs near 140 K, compared to a transition temperature of 156 K observed in polycrystalline samples. Isotherms of magnetoresistivity measured as a function of magnetic field can be scaled onto a single curve in which the scaling field is a linear function of temperature between 2.2 K and 180 K.

Pressure-induced enhancement of superconductivity and suppression of semiconducting behavior in Ln(O0.5F0.5)BiS2 (Ln = La, Ce) compounds

Electrical resistivity measurements as a function of temperature between 1 K and 300 K were performed at various pressures up to 3 GPa on the superconducting layered compounds Ln(O0.5F0.5)BiS2 (Ln = La, Ce). At atmospheric pressure, La(O0.5F0.5)BiS2 and Ce(O0.5F0.5)BiS2 have superconducting critical temperatures, Tc, of 3.3 K and 2.3 K, respectively. For both compounds, the superconducting critical temperature Tc initially increases, reaches a maximum value of 10.1 K for La(O0.5F0.5)BiS2 and 6.7 K for CeO(0.5F0.5)BiS2, and then gradually decreases with increasing pressure. Both samples also exhibit transient behavior in the region between the lower Tc phase near atmospheric pressure and the higher Tc phase. This region is characterized by a broadening of the superconducting transition, in which Tc and the transition width, delta Tc, are reversible with increasing and decreasing pressure. There is also an appreciable pressure-induced and hysteretic suppression of semiconducting behavior up to the pressure at which the maximum value of Tc is found. At pressures above the value at which the maximum in Tc occurs, there is a gradual decrease of Tc and further suppression of the semiconducting behavior with pressure, both of which are reversible.

Superconductivity induced by electron doping in the system La1-xMxOBiS2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf, Th)

We report a strategy to induce superconductivity in the BiS$_2$-based compound LaOBiS$_2$. Instead of substituting F for O, we increase the charge-carrier density (electron dope) via substitution of tetravalent Th$^{+4}$, Hf$^{+4}$, Zr$^{+4}$, and Ti$^{+4}$ for trivalent La$^{+3}$. It is found that both the LaOBiS$_2$ and ThOBiS$_2$ parent compounds are bad metals and that superconductivity is induced by electron doping with \emph{T$_c$} values of up to 2.85 K. The superconducting and normal states were characterized by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. We also demonstrate that reducing the charge-carrier density (hole doping) via substitution of divalent Sr$^{+2}$ for La$^{+3}$ does not induce superconductivity.

Superconductivity of F-substituted LnOBiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Yb) compounds

Polycrystalline samples of F-substituted LnOBiS2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Yb) compounds were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction measurements and found to have the ZrCuSiAs crystal structure. Electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements were performed on all of the samples and specific heat measurements were made on those with Ln = La, Ce, and Yb. All of these compounds exhibit superconductivity in the range 1.9 K - 5.4 K, which has not previously been reported for the compounds based on Ce, Pr, and Yb. The YbO0.5F0.5BiS2 compounds was also found to exhibit magnetic order at ~2.7 K that apparently coexists with superconductivity below 5.4 K.

Transition from one-dimensional antiferromagnetism to three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order in single-crystalline CuSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$

Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and thermal expansion are reported for single crystalline CuSb$_{2}$O$_{6}$ in the temperature range $5<T<350$ K. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a broad peak centered near 60 K that is typical of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic compounds. Long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ = 8.7 K is accompanied by an energy gap ($Δ$ = 17.48(6) K). This transition represents a crossover from one- to three-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior. Both heat capacity and the thermal expansion coefficients exhibit distinct jumps at $T_N$, which are similar to those observed at the normal-superconducting phase transition in a superconductor. This behavior is quite unusual, and is presumably associated with a Spin-Peierls transition occurring as a result of three-dimensional phonons coupling with {\it Jordan-Wigner-transformed} Fermions.

Giant Nernst effect and bipolarity in the quasi-one-dimensional metal, Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17)

The Nernst coefficient for the quasi-one-dimensional metal, Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17), is found to be among the largest known for metals (~500 microV/KT at T~20K), and is enhanced in a broad range of temperature by orders of magnitude over the value expected from Boltzmann theory for carrier diffusion. A comparatively small Seebeck coefficient implies that Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17) is bipolar with large, partial Seebeck coefficients of opposite sign. A very large thermomagnetic figure of merit, ZT~0.5, is found at high field in the range T~35-50K.

Stoichiometry, structure, and transport in the quasi-one-dimensional metal, Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17)

A correlation between lattice parameters, oxygen composition, and the thermoelectric and Hall coefficients is presented for single-crystal Li(0.9)Mo(6)O(17), a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic compound. The possibility that this compound is a compensated metal is discussed in light of a substantial variability observed in the literature for these transport coefficients.

Transport, magnetic, and thermal properties of non-centrosymmetric Yb2Co12P7

We report magnetization and specific heat measurements down to 2 K and electrical resistivity down to millikelvin temperatures on polycrystalline samples of the non-centrosymmetric compound Yb2Co12P7. In addition to the previously reported ferromagnetic ordering of the cobalt sub-lattice at T_C = 136 K we find a magnetic transition below T_M = 5 K that is likely associated with ordering of the Yb ions. The broad nature of the specific heat anomaly suggests disordered magnetism and possible short range correlations well above T_M.
