BézierSketch: A generative model for scalable vector sketches

The study of neural generative models of human sketches is a fascinating contemporary modeling problem due to the links between sketch image generation and the human drawing process. The landmark SketchRNN provided breakthrough by sequentially generating sketches as a sequence of waypoints. However this leads to low-resolution image generation, and failure to model long sketches. In this paper we present BézierSketch, a novel generative model for fully vector sketches that are automatically scalable and high-resolution. To this end, we first introduce a novel inverse graphics approach to stroke embedding that trains an encoder to embed each stroke to its best fit Bézier curve. This enables us to treat sketches as short sequences of paramaterized strokes and thus train a recurrent sketch generator with greater capacity for longer sketches, while producing scalable high-resolution results. We report qualitative and quantitative results on the Quick, Draw! benchmark.

Improving cross-lingual model transfer by chunking

We present a shallow parser guided cross-lingual model transfer approach in order to address the syntactic differences between source and target languages more effectively. In this work, we assume the chunks or phrases in a sentence as transfer units in order to address the syntactic differences between the source and target languages arising due to the differences in ordering of words in the phrases and the ordering of phrases in a sentence separately.

Distributed Weighted Parameter Averaging for SVM Training on Big Data

Two popular approaches for distributed training of SVMs on big data are parameter averaging and ADMM. Parameter averaging is efficient but suffers from loss of accuracy with increase in number of partitions, while ADMM in the feature space is accurate but suffers from slow convergence. In this paper, we report a hybrid approach called weighted parameter averaging (WPA), which optimizes the regularized hinge loss with respect to weights on parameters. The problem is shown to be same as solving SVM in a projected space. We also demonstrate an $O(\frac{1}{N})$ stability bound on final hypothesis given by WPA, using novel proof techniques. Experimental results on a variety of toy and real world datasets show that our approach is significantly more accurate than parameter averaging for high number of partitions. It is also seen the proposed method enjoys much faster convergence compared to ADMM in features space.

Polariton Bose-Einstein condensate at room temperature in a Al(Ga)N nanowire-dielectric microcavity with a spatial potential trap

A spatial potential trap is formed in a 6.0 μm Al(Ga)N nanowire by varying the Al composition along its length during epitaxial growth. The polariton emission characteristics of a dielectric microcavity with the single nanowire embedded in-plane has been studied at room temperature. Excitation is provided at the Al(Ga)N end of the nanowire and polariton emission is observed from the lowest bandgap GaN region of the nanowire. Comparison of the results with those measured in an identical microcavity with an uniform GaN nanowire and having an identical exciton-photon detuning suggests evaporative cooling of the polaritons as they are transported across the trap in the Al(Ga)N nanowire. Measurement of the spectral characteristics of the polariton emission, their momentum distribution, first-order spatial coherence and time-resolved measurements of polariton cooling provide strong evidence of the formation of an equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensate, a unique state of matter in solid state systems, in the GaN region of the nanowire, at room temperature. An equilibrium condensate is not formed in the GaN nanowire dielectric microcavity without the spatial potential trap.

Polariton Emission Characteristics of a Modulation-Doped Multiquantum-Well Microcavity Diode

The role of polariton-electron scattering on the performance characteristics of an electrically injected GaAs-based quantum well microcavity diode in the strong coupling regime has been investigated. An electron gas is introduced in the quantum wells by modulation doping with silicon dopants. It is observed that polariton-electron scattering suppresses the relaxation bottleneck in the lower polariton branch. However, it is not adequate to produce a degenerate coherent condensate at k|| ~ 0 and coherent emission.
