A finite analogue of a $q$-series identity of Bhoria, Eyyunni and Maji and its applications

Bhoria, Eyyunni and Maji recently obtained a four-parameter $q$-series identity which gives as special cases not only all five entries of Ramanujan on pages 354 and 355 of his second notebook but also allows them to obtain an analytical proof of a result of Bressoud and Subbarao. Here, we obtain a finite analogue of their identity which naturally gives finite analogues of Ramanujan's results. Using one of these finite analogues, we deduce an identity for a finite sum involving a ${}_2ϕ_1$. This identity is then applied to obtain a generalization of the generating function version of Andrews' famous identity for the smallest parts function $\textup{spt}(n)$. The $q$-series which generalizes $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\textup{spt}(n)q^n$ is completely different from $S(z, q)$ considered by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. Further applications of our identity are given. Lastly we generalize a result of Andrews, Chan and Kim which involves the first odd moments of rank and crank.

A modular relation involving non-trivial zeros of the Dedekind zeta function, and the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis

We give a number field analogue of a result of Ramanujan, Hardy and Littlewood, thereby obtaining a modular relation involving the non-trivial zeros of the Dedekind zeta function. We also provide a Riesz-type criterion for the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis for $ζ_K(s)$. New elegant transformations are obtained when $K$ is a quadratic extension, one of which involves the modified Bessel function of the second kind.

Combinatorial identities associated with a bivariate generating function for overpartition pairs

We obtain a three-parameter $q$-series identity that generalizes two results of Chan and Mao. By specializing our identity, we derive new results of combinatorial significance in connection with $N(r, s, m, n)$, a function counting certain overpartition pairs recently introduced by Bringmann, Lovejoy and Osburn. For example, one of our identities gives a closed-form evaluation of a double series in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind, thereby resulting in an analogue of Euler's pentagonal number theorem. Another of our results expresses a multi-sum involving $N(r, s, m, n)$ in terms of just the partition function $p(n)$. Using a result of Shimura we also relate a certain double series with a weight 7/2 theta series.

Explicit transformations of certain Lambert series

An exact transformation, which we call the \emph{master identity}, is obtained for the first time for the series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}σ_{a}(n)e^{-ny}$ for $a\in\mathbb{C}$ and Re$(y)>0$. New modular-type transformations when $a$ is a non-zero even integer are obtained as its special cases. The precise obstruction to modularity is explicitly seen in these transformations. These include a novel companion to Ramanujan's famous formula for $ζ(2m+1)$. The Wigert-Bellman identity arising from the $a=0$ case of the master identity is derived too. When $a$ is an odd integer, the well-known modular transformations of the Eisenstein series on $\textup{SL}_{2}\left(\mathbb{Z}\right)$, that of the Dedekind eta function as well as Ramanujan's formula for $ζ(2m+1)$ are derived from the master identity. The latter identity itself is derived using Guinand's version of the Vorono\"{\dotlessi} summation formula and an integral evaluation of N.~S.~Koshliakov involving a generalization of the modified Bessel function $K_ν(z)$. Koshliakov's integral evaluation is proved for the first time. It is then generalized using a well-known kernel of Watson to obtain an interesting two-variable generalization of the modified Bessel function. This generalization allows us to obtain a new modular-type transformation involving the sums-of-squares function $r_k(n)$. Some results on functions self-reciprocal in the Watson kernel are also obtained.

Lambert series of logarithm, the derivative of Deninger's function $R(z)$ and a mean value theorem for $ζ\left(\frac{1}{2}-it\right)ζ'\left(\frac{1}{2}+it\right)$

An explicit transformation for the series $\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}\displaystyle\frac{\log(n)}{e^{ny}-1},$ Re$(y)>0$, which takes $y$ to $1/y$, is obtained for the first time. This series transforms into a series containing $ψ_1(z)$, the derivative of Deninger's function $R(z)$. In the course of obtaining the transformation, new important properties of $ψ_1(z)$ are derived, as is a new representation for the second derivative of the two-variable Mittag-Leffler function $E_{2, b}(z)$ evaluated at $b=1$. Our transformation readily gives the complete asymptotic expansion of $\sum\limits_{n=1}^{\infty}\displaystyle\frac{\log(n)}{e^{ny}-1}$ as $y\to0$. An application of the latter is that it gives the asymptotic expansion of $ \displaystyle\int_{0}^{\infty}ζ\left(\frac{1}{2}-it\right)ζ'\left(\frac{1}{2}+it\right)e^{-δt}\, dt$ as $δ\to0$.

Two General Series Identities Involving Modified Bessel Functions and a Class of Arithmetical Functions

We consider two sequences $a(n)$ and $b(n)$, $1\leq n<\infty$, generated by Dirichlet series $$\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{a(n)}{λ_n^{s}}\qquad\text{and}\qquad \sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{b(n)}{μ_n^{s}},$$ satisfying a familiar functional equation involving the gamma function $Γ(s)$. Two general identities are established. The first involves the modified Bessel function $K_μ(z)$, and can be thought of as a 'modular' or 'theta' relation wherein modified Bessel functions, instead of exponential functions, appear. Appearing in the second identity are $K_μ(z)$, the Bessel functions of imaginary argument $I_μ(z)$, and ordinary hypergeometric functions ${_2F_1}(a,b;c;z)$. Although certain special cases appear in the literature, the general identities are new. The arithmetical functions appearing in the identities include Ramanujan's arithmetical function $τ(n)$; the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of $k$ squares $r_k(n)$; and primitive Dirichlet characters $χ(n)$.

Generalizations of the Andrews-Yee identities associated with the mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$

George Andrews and Ae Ja Yee recently established beautiful results involving bivariate generalizations of the third order mock theta functions $ω(q)$ and $ν(q)$, thereby extending their earlier results with the second author. Generalizing the Andrews-Yee identities for trivariate generalizations of these mock theta functions remained a mystery, as pointed out by Li and Yang in their recent work. We partially solve this problem and generalize these identities. Several new as well as well-known results are derived. For example, one of our two main theorems gives, as a corollary, a special case of Soon-Yi Kang's three-variable reciprocity theorem. A relation between a new restricted overpartition function $p^{*}(n)$ and a weighted partition function $p_*(n)$ is obtained from one of the special cases of our second theorem.

Superimposing theta structure on a generalized modular relation

A generalized modular relation of the form $F(z, w, α)=F(z, iw,β)$, where $αβ=1$ and $i=\sqrt{-1}$, is obtained in the course of evaluating an integral involving the Riemann $Ξ$-function. It is a two-variable generalization of a transformation found on page $220$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook. This modular relation involves a surprising generalization of the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s, a)$, which we denote by $ζ_w(s, a)$. While $ζ_w(s, 1)$ is essentially a product of confluent hypergeometric function and the Riemann zeta function, $ζ_w(s, a)$ for $0<a<1$ is an interesting new special function. We show that $ζ_w(s, a)$ satisfies a beautiful theory generalizing that of $ζ(s, a)$ albeit the properties of $ζ_w(s, a)$ are much harder to derive than those of $ζ(s, a)$. In particular, it is shown that for $0<a<1$ and $w\in\mathbb{C}$, $ζ_w(s, a)$ can be analytically continued to Re$(s)>-1$ except for a simple pole at $s=1$. This is done by obtaining a generalization of Hermite's formula in the context of $ζ_w(s, a)$. The theory of functions reciprocal in the kernel $\sin(πz) J_{2 z}(2 \sqrt{xt}) -\cos(πz) L_{2 z}(2 \sqrt{xt})$, where $L_{z}(x)=-\frac{2}πK_{z}(x)-Y_{z}(x)$ and $J_{z}(x), Y_{z}(x)$ and $K_{z}(x)$ are the Bessel functions, is worked out. So is the theory of a new generalization of $K_{z}(x)$, namely, ${}_1K_{z,w}(x)$. Both these theories as well as that of $ζ_w(s, a)$ are essential to obtain the generalized modular relation.

Generalized Lambert series and arithmetic nature of odd zeta values

It is pointed out that the generalized Lambert series $\displaystyle\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}\frac{n^{N-2h}}{e^{n^{N}x}-1}$ studied by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto can be found on page $332$ of Ramanujan's Lost Notebook in a slightly more general form. We extend an important transformation of this series obtained by Kanemitsu, Tanigawa and Yoshimoto by removing restrictions on the parameters $N$ and $h$ that they impose. From our extension we deduce a beautiful new generalization of Ramanujan's famous formula for odd zeta values which, for $N$ odd and $m>0$, gives a relation between $ζ(2m+1)$ and $ζ(2Nm+1)$. A result complementary to the aforementioned generalization is obtained for any even $N$ and $m\in\mathbb{Z}$. It generalizes a transformation of Wigert and can be regarded as a formula for $ζ\left(2m+1-\frac{1}{N}\right)$. Applications of these transformations include a generalization of the transformation for the logarithm of Dedekind eta-function $η(z)$, Zudilin- and Rivoal-type results on transcendence of certain values, and a transcendence criterion for Euler's constant $γ$.

Asymptotics and exact formulas for Zagier polynomials

In 1998 Don Zagier introduced the modified Bernoulli numbers $B_{n}^{*}$ and showed that they satisfy amusing variants of some properties of Bernoulli numbers. In particular, he studied the asymptotic behavior of $B_{2n}^{*}$, and also obtained an exact formula for them, the motivation for which came from the representation of $B_{2n}$ in terms of the Riemann zeta function $ζ(2n)$. The modified Bernoulli numbers were recently generalized to Zagier polynomials $B_{n}^{*}(x)$. For $0<x<1$, an exact formula for $B_{2n}^{*}(x)$ involving infinite series of Bessel function of the second kind and Chebyshev polynomials, that yields Zagier's formula in a limiting case, is established here. Such series arise in diffraction theory. An analogous formula for $B_{2n+1}^{*}(x)$ is also presented. The $6$-periodicity of $B_{2n+1}^{*}$ is deduced as a limiting case of it. These formulas are reminiscent of the Fourier expansions of Bernoulli polynomials. Some new results, for example, the one yielding the derivative of the Bessel function of the first kind with respect to its order as the Fourier coefficient of a function involving Chebyshev polynomials, are obtained in the course of proving these exact formulas. The asymptotic behavior of Zagier polynomials is also derived from them. Finally, a Zagier-type exact formula is obtained for $B_{2n}^{*}\left(-\frac{3}{2}\right)+B_{2n}^{*}$.

Error functions, Mordell integrals and an integral analogue of partial theta function

A new transformation involving the error function $\textup{erf}(z)$, the imaginary error function $\textup{erfi}(z)$, and an integral analogue of a partial theta function is given along with its character analogues. Another complementary error function transformation is also obtained which when combined with the first explains a transformation in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook termed by Berndt and Xu as the one for an integral analogue of theta functions. These transformations are used to obtain a variety of exact and approximate evaluations of some non-elementary integrals involving hypergeometric functions. Several asymptotic expansions, including the one for a non-elementary integral involving a product of the Riemann $Ξ$-function of two different arguments, are obtained, which generalize known results due to Berndt and Evans, and Oloa.

New pathways and connections in Number Theory and Analysis motivated by two incorrect claims of Ramanujan

We focus on three pages in Ramanujan's lost notebook, pages 336, 335, and 332, in decreasing order of attention. On page 336, Ramanujan proposes two identities, but the formulas are wrong -- each is vitiated by divergent series. We concentrate on only one of the two incorrect "identities", which may have been devised to attack the extended divisor problem. We prove here a corrected version of Ramanujan's claim, which contains the convergent series appearing in it. The convergent series in Ramanujan's faulty claim is similar to one used by G.F. Voronoi, G.H. Hardy, and others in their study of the classical Dirichlet divisor problem. The page 335 comprises two formulas featuring doubly infinite series of Bessel functions, the first being conjoined with the classical circle problem initiated by Gauss, and the second being associated with the Dirichlet divisor problem. The first and fourth authors, along with Sun Kim, have written several papers providing proofs of these two difficult formulas in different interpretations. In this monograph, we return to these two formulas and examine them in more general settings. The Voronoi summation formula appears prominently in our study. In particular, we generalize work of J.R. Wilton and derive an analogue involving the sum of divisors function $σ_s(n)$. We also establish here new series and integral identities involving modified Bessel functions and modified Lommel functions. Among other results, we establish a modular transformation for an infinite series involving $σ_{s}(n)$ and modified Lommel functions. We define and discuss two new related classes of integral transforms, which we call Koshliakov transforms, because N.S. Koshliakov first found elegant special cases of each.

New representations for $σ(q)$ via reciprocity theorems

Two new representations for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ are obtained. The proof of the first one uses the three-variable reciprocity theorem due to Soon-Yi Kang and a transformation due to R.P. Agarwal while that of the second uses the four-variable reciprocity theorem due to George Andrews and a generalization of a recent transformation of Andrews, Schultz, Yee and the second author. The advantage of these representations is that they involve free complex parameters - one in the first representation, and two in the second.

On a theorem of A. I. Popov on sums of squares

Let $r_k(n)$ denote the number of representations of the positive integer $n$ as the sum of $k$ squares. In 1934, the Russian mathematician A.~I.~Popov stated, but did not rigorously prove, a beautiful series transformation involving $r_k(n)$ and certain Bessel functions. We provide a proof of this identity for the first time, as well as for another identity, which can be regarded as both an analogue of Popov's identity and an identity involving $r_2(n)$ from Ramanujan's lost notebook.

Overpartitions related to the mock theta function $ω(q)$

It was recently shown that $qω(q)$, where $ω(q)$ is one of the third order mock theta functions, is the generating function of $p_ω(n)$, the number of partitions of a positive integer $n$ such that all odd parts are less than twice the smallest part. In this paper, we study the overpartition analogue of $p_ω(n)$, and express its generating function in terms of a ${}_3ϕ_{2}$ basic hypergeometric series and an infinite series involving little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. This is accomplished by obtaining a new seven parameter $q$-series identity which generalizes a deep identity due to the first author as well as its generalization by R.P.~Agarwal. We also derive two interesting congruences satisfied by the overpartition analogue, and some congruences satisfied by the associated smallest parts function.

Partitions associated with the Ramanujan/Watson mock theta functions $ω(q), ν(q)$ and $ϕ(q)$

The generating function of partitions with repeated (resp. distinct) parts such that each odd part is less than twice the smallest part is shown to be the third order mock theta function $ω(q)$ (resp. $ν(-q)$). Similar results for partitions with the corresponding restriction on each even part are also obtained, one of which involves the third order mock theta function $ϕ(q)$. Congruences for the smallest parts functions associated to such partitions are obtained. Two analogues of the partition-theoretic interpretation of Euler's pentagonal theorem are also obtained.

Modified Nörlund polynomials

The modified Bernoulli numbers $B_{n}^{*}$ considered by Zagier are generalized to modified Nörlund polynomials ${B_{n}^{(\ell)*}}$. For $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$, an explicit expression for the generating function for these polynomials is obtained. Evaluations of some spectacular integrals involving Chebyshev polynomials, and of a finite sum involving integrals of the Hurwitz zeta function are also obtained. New results about the $\ell$-fold convolution of the square hyperbolic secant distribution are obtained, such as a differential-difference equation satisfied by a logarithmic moment and a closed-form expression in terms of the Barnes zeta function.

Monotonicity Results for Dirichlet L-functions

We present some monotonicity results for Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to real primitive characters. We show in particular that these Dirichlet $L$-functions are far from being logarithmically completely monotonic. Also, we show that, unlike in the case of the Riemann zeta function, the problem of comparing the signs of $\frac{d^k}{ds^k}\log L(s,χ)$ at any two points $s_1, s_2>1$ is more subtle.

Self-reciprocal functions, powers of the Riemann zeta function and modular-type transformations

The classical transformation of Jacobi's theta function admits a simple proof by producing an integral representation that yields this invariance apparent. This idea seems to have first appeared in the work of S. Ramanujan. Several examples of this idea have been produced by Koshlyakov, Ferrar, Guinand, Ramanujan and others. A unifying procedure to analyze these examples and natural generalizations is presented.

The Zagier polynomials. Part II: Arithmetic properties of coefficients

The modified Bernoulli numbers \begin{equation*} B_{n}^{*} = \sum_{r=0}^{n} \binom{n+r}{2r} \frac{B_{r}}{n+r}, \quad n > 0 \end{equation*} introduced by D. Zagier in 1998 were recently extended to the polynomial case by replacing $B_{r}$ by the Bernoulli polynomials $B_{r}(x)$. Arithmetic properties of the coefficients of these polynomials are established. In particular, the 2-adic valuation of the modified Bernoulli numbers is determined. A variety of analytic, umbral, and asymptotic methods is used to analyze these polynomials.

Generalized higher order spt-functions

We give a new generalization of the spt-function of G.E. Andrews, namely $\textup{Spt}_j(n)$, and give its combinatorial interpretation in terms of successive lower-Durfee squares. We then generalize the higher order spt-function $\textup{spt}_k(n)$, due to F.G. Garvan, to ${}_j\textup{spt}_{k}(n)$, thus providing a two-fold generalization of $\textup{spt}(n)$, and give its combinatorial interpretation.

Rank-Crank type PDEs and generalized Lambert series identities

We show how Rank-Crank type PDEs for higher order Appell functions due to Zwegers may be obtained from a generalized Lambert series identity due to the first author. Special cases are the Rank-Crank PDE due to Atkin and the third author and a PDE for a level 5 Appell function also found by the third author. These two special PDEs are related to generalized Lambert series identities due to Watson, and Jackson respectively. The first author's Lambert series identities are common generalizations. We also show how Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer's proof using elliptic functions can be extended to prove these generalized Lambert series identities.

The Zagier modification of Bernoulli numbers and a polynomial extension. Part I

The modified B_{n}^{*} = \sum_{r=0}^{n} \binom{n+r}{2r} \frac{B_{r}}{n+r}, \quad n > 0 introduced by D. Zagier in 1998 are extended to the polynomial case by replacing $B_{r}$ by the Bernoulli polynomials $B_{r}(x)$. Properties of these new polynomials are established using the umbral method as well as classical techniques. The values of $x$ that yield periodic subsequences $B_{2n+1}^{*}(x)$ are classified. The strange 6-periodicity of $B_{2n+1}^{*}$, established by Zagier, is explained by exhibiting a decomposition of this sequence as the sum of two parts with periods 2 and 3, respectively. Similar results for modifications of Euler numbers are stated.

Analogues of the general theta transformation formula

A new class of integrals involving the confluent hypergeometric function ${}_1F_{1}(a;c;z)$ and the Riemann $Ξ$-function is considered. It generalizes a class containing some integrals of S. Ramanujan, G.H. Hardy and W.L. Ferrar and gives as by-products, transformation formulas of the form $F(z,α)=F(iz,β)$, where $αβ=1$. As particular examples, we derive an extended version of the general theta transformation formula and generalizations of certain formulas of Ferrar and Hardy. A one-variable generalization of a well-known identity of Ramanujan is also given. We conclude with a generalization of a conjecture due to Ramanujan, Hardy and J.E. Littlewood involving infinite series of Möbius functions.

Convexity of Quotients of Theta Functions

For fixed $u$ and $v$ such that $0\leq u<v<1/2$, the monotonicity of the quotients of Jacobi theta functions, namely, $θ_{j}(u|iπt)/θ_{j}(v|iπt)$, $j=1, 2, 3, 4$, on $0<t<\infty$ has been established in the previous works of A.Yu. Solynin, K. Schiefermayr, and Solynin and the first author. In the present paper, we show that the quotients $θ_{2}(u|iπt)/θ_{2}(v|iπt)$ and $θ_{3}(u|iπt)/θ_{3}(v|iπt)$ are convex on $0<t<\infty$.
