A Hybrid Multi-Objective Carpool Route Optimization Technique using Genetic Algorithm and A* Algorithm

Carpooling has gained considerable importance in developed as well as in developing countries as an effective solution for controlling vehicular pollution, both sound and air. As carpooling decreases the number of vehicles used by commuters, it results in multiple benefits like mitigation of traffic and congestion on the roads, reduced demand for parking facilities, lesser energy or fuel consumption and most importantly, reduction in carbon emission, thus improving the quality of life in cities. This work presents a hybrid GA-A* algorithm to obtain optimal routes for the carpooling problem in the domain of multi-objective optimization having multiple conflicting objectives. Though Genetic algorithm provides optimal solutions, A* algorithm because of its efficiency in providing the shortest route between any two points based on heuristics, enhances the optimal routes obtained using Genetic algorithm. The refined routes, obtained using the GA-A* algorithm, are further subjected to dominance test to obtain non-dominating solutions based on Pareto-Optimality. The routes obtained maximize the profit of the service provider by minimizing the travel and detour distance as well as pick-up/drop costs while maximizing the utilization of the car. The proposed algorithm has been implemented over the Salt Lake area of Kolkata. Route distance and detour distance for the optimal routes obtained using the proposed algorithm are consistently lesser for the same number of passengers when compared with the corresponding data obtained using the existing algorithm. Various statistical analyses like boxplots have also confirmed that the proposed algorithm regularly performed better than the existing algorithm using only Genetic Algorithm.

Bayesian Hierarchical Multi-Objective Optimization for Vehicle Parking Route Discovery

Discovering an optimal route to the most feasible parking lot has been a matter of concern for any driver which aggravates further during peak hours of the day and at congested places leading to considerable wastage of time and fuel. This paper proposes a Bayesian hierarchical technique for obtaining the most optimal route to a parking lot. The route selection is based on conflicting objectives and hence the problem belongs to the domain of multi-objective optimization. A probabilistic data driven method has been used to overcome the inherent problem of weight selection in the popular weighted sum technique. The weights of these conflicting objectives have been refined using a Bayesian hierarchical model based on Multinomial and Dirichlet prior. Genetic algorithm has been used to obtain optimal solutions. Simulated data has been used to obtain routes which are in close agreement with real life situations.

Hierarchical Bayesian Approach for Improving Weights for Solving Multi-Objective Route Optimization Problem

The weighted sum method is a simple and widely used technique that scalarizes multiple conflicting objectives into a single objective function. It suffers from the problem of determining the appropriate weights corresponding to the objectives. This paper proposes a novel Hierarchical Bayesian model based on Multinomial distribution and Dirichlet prior to refine the weights for solving such multi-objective route optimization problems. The model and methodologies revolve around data obtained from a small scale pilot survey. The method aims at improving the existing methods of weight determination in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems as data driven choice of weights through appropriate probabilistic modelling ensures, on an average, much reliable results than non-probabilistic techniques. Application of this model and methodologies to simulated as well as real data sets revealed quite encouraging performances with respect to stabilizing the estimates of weights.

Error functions, Mordell integrals and an integral analogue of partial theta function

A new transformation involving the error function $\textup{erf}(z)$, the imaginary error function $\textup{erfi}(z)$, and an integral analogue of a partial theta function is given along with its character analogues. Another complementary error function transformation is also obtained which when combined with the first explains a transformation in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook termed by Berndt and Xu as the one for an integral analogue of theta functions. These transformations are used to obtain a variety of exact and approximate evaluations of some non-elementary integrals involving hypergeometric functions. Several asymptotic expansions, including the one for a non-elementary integral involving a product of the Riemann $Ξ$-function of two different arguments, are obtained, which generalize known results due to Berndt and Evans, and Oloa.

Fabrication and Characterisation of Oil-Free Large High Pressure Laminate Resistive Plate Chamber

A large (240 cm $\times$ 120 cm $\times$ 0.2 cm) oil-free High Pressure Laminate (HPL), commonly referred as "bakelite", Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) has been developed at VECC-Kolkata using locally available P-302 OLTC grade HPL. The chamber has been operated in streamer mode using Argon, Freon(R134a) and Iso-butane in a ratio of 34:57:9 by volume. The electrodes and glue samples have been characterised by measuring their electrical parameters like bulk resistivity and surface resistivity. The performance of the chamber has been studied by measuring the efficiency, its uniformity and stability in detection of cosmic muons. Timing measurement has been performed at a central location of the chamber. The chamber showed an efficiency $>$95$\%$ and time resolution ($σ$), at the point of measurement, $\sim$0.83 ns at 9000V. Details of the material characterisation, fabrication procedure and performance studies have been discussed.

Long Term Performance Studies of Large Oil-Free Bakelite Resistive Plate Chamber

Several high energy physics and neutrino physics experiments worldwide require large-size RPCs to cover wide acceptances. The muon tracking systems in the Iron calorimeter (ICAL) in the INO experiment, India and the near detector in DUNE at Fermilab are two such examples. A (240 cm $\times$ 120 cm $\times$ 0.2 cm) bakelite RPC has been built and tested at Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata, using indigenous materials procured from the local market. No additional lubricant, like oil has been used on the electrode surfaces for smoothening. The chamber is in operation for $>$ 365 days. We have tested the chamber for its long term operation. The leakage current, bulk resistivity, efficiency, noise rate and time resolution of the chamber have been found to be quite stable during the testing peroid. It showed an efficiency $>$ 95$\%$ with an average time resolution of $\sim$0.83 ns at the point of measurement at 9000 V throughout the testing period. Details of the long term performance of the chamber have been discussed.

New pathways and connections in Number Theory and Analysis motivated by two incorrect claims of Ramanujan

We focus on three pages in Ramanujan's lost notebook, pages 336, 335, and 332, in decreasing order of attention. On page 336, Ramanujan proposes two identities, but the formulas are wrong -- each is vitiated by divergent series. We concentrate on only one of the two incorrect "identities", which may have been devised to attack the extended divisor problem. We prove here a corrected version of Ramanujan's claim, which contains the convergent series appearing in it. The convergent series in Ramanujan's faulty claim is similar to one used by G.F. Voronoi, G.H. Hardy, and others in their study of the classical Dirichlet divisor problem. The page 335 comprises two formulas featuring doubly infinite series of Bessel functions, the first being conjoined with the classical circle problem initiated by Gauss, and the second being associated with the Dirichlet divisor problem. The first and fourth authors, along with Sun Kim, have written several papers providing proofs of these two difficult formulas in different interpretations. In this monograph, we return to these two formulas and examine them in more general settings. The Voronoi summation formula appears prominently in our study. In particular, we generalize work of J.R. Wilton and derive an analogue involving the sum of divisors function $σ_s(n)$. We also establish here new series and integral identities involving modified Bessel functions and modified Lommel functions. Among other results, we establish a modular transformation for an infinite series involving $σ_{s}(n)$ and modified Lommel functions. We define and discuss two new related classes of integral transforms, which we call Koshliakov transforms, because N.S. Koshliakov first found elegant special cases of each.

Monotonicity Results for Dirichlet L-functions

We present some monotonicity results for Dirichlet $L$-functions associated to real primitive characters. We show in particular that these Dirichlet $L$-functions are far from being logarithmically completely monotonic. Also, we show that, unlike in the case of the Riemann zeta function, the problem of comparing the signs of $\frac{d^k}{ds^k}\log L(s,χ)$ at any two points $s_1, s_2>1$ is more subtle.

Zeros of partial sums of the Dedekind zeta function of a cyclotomic field

In this article, we study the zeros of the partial sums of the Dedekind zeta function of a cyclotomic field $K$ defined by the truncated Dirichlet series \[ ζ_{K, X} (s) = \sum_{\|\mathfrak{a}\| \leq X} \frac{1}{\|\mathfrak{a}\|^{s}}, \] where the sum is to be taken over nonzero integral ideals $\mathfrak{a}$ of $K$ and $\|\mathfrak{a}\|$ denotes the absolute norm of $\mathfrak{a}$. Specifically, we establish the zero-free regions for $ζ_{K, X} (s)$ and estimate the number of zeros of $ζ_{K, X} (s)$ up to height $T$.

Convexity of Quotients of Theta Functions

For fixed $u$ and $v$ such that $0\leq u<v<1/2$, the monotonicity of the quotients of Jacobi theta functions, namely, $θ_{j}(u|iπt)/θ_{j}(v|iπt)$, $j=1, 2, 3, 4$, on $0<t<\infty$ has been established in the previous works of A.Yu. Solynin, K. Schiefermayr, and Solynin and the first author. In the present paper, we show that the quotients $θ_{2}(u|iπt)/θ_{2}(v|iπt)$ and $θ_{3}(u|iπt)/θ_{3}(v|iπt)$ are convex on $0<t<\infty$.

Sums of magnetic eigenvalues are maximal on rotationally symmetric domains

The sum of the first n energy levels of the planar Laplacian with constant magnetic field of given total flux is shown to be maximal among triangles for the equilateral triangle, under normalization of the ratio (moment of inertia)/(area)^3 on the domain. The result holds for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, with an analogue for Robin (or de Gennes) boundary conditions too. The square similarly maximizes the eigenvalue sum among parallelograms, and the disk maximizes among ellipses. More generally, a domain with rotational symmetry will maximize the magnetic eigenvalue sum among all linear images of that domain. These results are new even for the ground state energy (n=1).
