Calderon-Zygmund theory for strongly coupled linear system of nonlocal equations with Holder-regular coefficient

We extend the Calderón-Zygmund theory for nonlocal equations to strongly coupled system of linear nonlocal equations $\mathcal{L}^{s}_{A} u = f$, where the operator $\mathcal{L}^{s}_{A}$ is formally given by \[ \mathcal{L}^s_{A}u = \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{A(x, y)}{\vert x-y\vert ^{n+2s}} \frac{(x-y)\otimes (x-y)}{\vert x-y\vert ^2}(u(x)-u(y))dy. \] For $0 < s < 1$ and $A:\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}^{n} \to \mathbb{R}$ taken to be symmetric and serving as a variable coefficient for the operator, the system under consideration is the fractional version of the classical Navier-Lamé linearized elasticity system. The study of the coupled system of nonlocal equations is motivated by its appearance in nonlocal mechanics, primarily in peridynamics. Our regularity result states that if $A(\cdot, y)$ is uniformly Holder continuous and $\inf_{x\in \mathbb{R}^n}A(x, x) > 0$, then for $f\in L^{p}_{loc},$ for $p\geq 2$, the solution vector $u\in H^{2s-δ,p}_{loc}$ for some $δ\in (0, s)$.

Nonlocal Bounded Variations with Applications

Motivated by problems where jumps across lower dimensional subsets and sharp transitions across interfaces are of interest, this paper studies the properties of fractional bounded variation ($BV$)-type spaces. Two different natural fractional analogs of classical $BV$ are considered: $BV^α$, a space induced from the Riesz-fractional gradient that has been recently studied by Comi-Stefani; and $bv^α$, induced by the Gagliardo-type fractional gradient often used in Dirichlet forms and Peridynamics - this one is naturally related to the Caffarelli-Roquejoffre-Savin fractional perimeter. Our main theoretical result is that the latter $bv^α$ actually corresponds to the Gagliardo-Slobodeckij space $W^{α,1}$. As an application, using the properties of these spaces, novel image denoising models are introduced and their corresponding Fenchel pre-dual formulations are derived. The latter requires density of smooth functions with compact support. We establish this density property for convex domains.

On the size of the singular set of minimizing harmonic maps

We consider minimizing harmonic maps $u$ from $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ into a closed Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}$ and prove: (1) an extension to $n \geq 4$ of Almgren and Lieb's linear law. That is, if the fundamental group of the target manifold $\mathcal{N}$ is finite, we have \[ \mathcal{H}^{n-3}(\textrm{sing } u) \le C \int_{\partial Ω} |\nabla_T u|^{n-1} \,d \mathcal{H}^{n-1}; \] (2) an extension of Hardt and Lin's stability theorem. Namely, assuming that the target manifold is $\mathcal{N}=\mathbb{S}^2$ we obtain that the singular set of $u$ is stable under small $W^{1,n-1}$-perturbations of the boundary data. In dimension $n=3$ both results are shown to hold with weaker hypotheses, i.e., only assuming that the trace of our map lies in the fractional space $W^{s,p}$ with $s \in (\frac{1}{2},1]$ and $p \in [2,\infty)$ satisfying $sp \geq 2$. We also discuss sharpness.

Partial regularity for fractional harmonic maps into spheres

This article addresses the regularity issue for stationary or minimizing fractional harmonic maps into spheres of order $s\in(0,1)$ in arbitrary dimensions. It is shown that such fractional harmonic maps are $C^\infty$ away from a small closed singular set. The Hausdorff dimension of the singular set is also estimated in terms of $s\in(0,1)$ and the stationarity/minimality assumption.

An estimate of the Hopf degree of fractional Sobolev mappings

We estimate the Hopf degree for smooth maps $f$ from $\mathbb{S}^{4n-1}$ to $\mathbb{S}^{2n}$ in the fractional Sobolev space. Namely we show that for $s \in [1 - \frac{1}{4n}, 1]$ \[ \left |{\rm deg}_H(f)\right | \lesssim [f]_{W^{s,\frac{4n-1}{s}}}^{\frac{4n}{s}}. \] Our argument is based on the Whitehead integral formula and commutator estimates for Jacobian-type expressions.

Epsilon-regularity for p-harmonic maps at a free boundary on a sphere

We prove an $ε$-regularity theorem for vector-valued p-harmonic maps, which are critical with respect to a partially free boundary condition, namely that they map the boundary into a round sphere. This does not seem to follow from the reflection method that Scheven used for harmonic maps with free boundary (i.e., the case $p=2$): the reflected equation can be interpreted as a $p$-harmonic map equation into a manifold, but the regularity theory for such equations is only known for round targets. Instead, we follow the spirit of the last-named author's recent work on free boundary harmonic maps and choose a good frame directly at the free boundary. This leads to growth estimates, which, in the critical regime $p=n$, imply Hölder regularity of solutions. In the supercritical regime, $p < n$, we combine the growth estimate with the geometric reflection argument: the reflected equation is super-critical, but, under the assumption of growth estimates, solutions are regular. In the case $p<n$, for stationary $p$-harmonic maps with free boundary, as a consequence of a monotonicity formula we obtain partial regularity up to the boundary away from a set of $(n-p)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure.

On BMO and Carleson measures on Riemannian manifolds

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a Riemannian $n$-manifold with a metric such that the manifold is Ahlfors-regular. We also assume either non-negative Ricci curvature, or that the Ricci curvature is bounded from below together with a bound on the gradient of the heat kernel. We characterize BMO-functions $u: \mathcal{M} \to \mathbb{R}$ by a Carleson measure condition of their $σ$-harmonic extension $U: \mathcal{M} \times (0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$. We make crucial use of a $T(b)$ theorem proved by Hofmann, Mitrea, Mitrea, and Morris. As an application we show that the famous theorem of Coifman--Lions--Meyer--Semmes holds in this class of manifolds: Jacobians of $W^{1,n}$-maps from $\mathcal{M}$ to $\mathbb{R}^n$ can be estimated against BMO-functions, which now follows from the arguments for commutators recently proposed by Lenzmann and the second-named author using only harmonic extensions, integration by parts, and trace space characterizations.

On symmetry of traveling solitary waves for dispersion generalized NLS

We consider dispersion generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) of the form $i \partial_t u = P(D) u - |u|^{2 σ} u$, where $P(D)$ denotes a (pseudo)-differential operator of arbitrary order. As a main result, we prove symmetry results for traveling solitary waves in the case of powers $σ\in \mathbb{N}$. The arguments are based on Steiner type rearrangements in Fourier space. Our results apply to a broad class of NLS-type equations such as fourth-order (biharmonic) NLS, fractional NLS, square-root Klein-Gordon and half-wave equations.

On $C^{1,α}$-regularity for critical points of a geometric obstacle-type problem

We consider critical points of the geometric obstacle problem on vectorial maps $u: \mathbb{B}^2 \subset \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^N$ \[ \int_{\mathbb{B}^2} |\nabla u|^2 \quad \mbox{subject to $u \in \mathbb{R}^N \backslash \mathbb{B}^N(0)$}. \] Our main result is $C^{1,α}$-regularity for any $α< 1$. Technically, we split the map $u=λv$, where $v: \mathbb{B}^2 \to \mathbb{S}^{N-1}$ is the vectorial component and $λ= |u|$ the scalar component measuring the distance to the origin. While $v$ satisfies a weighted harmonic map equation with weight $λ^2$, $λ$ solves the obstacle problem for \[ \int_{\mathbb{B}^2} |\nabla λ|^2+λ^2 |\nabla v|^2, \quad \mbox{subject to $λ\geq 1$}. \] where $|\nabla v|^2 \in L^1(\mathbb{B}^2)$. We then play ping-pong between the increases in the regularity of $λ$ and $v$ to obtain finally the $C^{1,α}$-result.

Invitation to H-systems in higher dimensions: known results, new facts, and related open problems

In this paper, we discuss two well-known open problems in the regularity theory for nonlinear, conformally invariant elliptic systems in dimensions $n\ge 3$, with a critical nonlinearity: $H$-systems (equations of hypersurfaces of prescribed mean curvature) and $n$-harmonic maps into compact Riemannian manifolds. For $n=2$ several solutions of these problems are known but they all break down in higher dimensions (unless one considers special cases, e.g. hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature or manifolds with symmetries). We discuss some of the known proofs and hint at the main difficulties. We also state a few new results (such as positive answers for all solutions of class $W^{n/2,2}$ for even $n$, instead of $W^{1,n}$) and list some open questions of independent interest - including specific endpoint variants of the Coifman-Rochberg-Weiss theorem, addressing the boundedness of commutators of fractional and singular integrals with multiplication by bounded functions of class $W^{1,n}$ - that would lead to solutions of these two problems.

Blow-up behaviour of a fractional Adams-Moser-Trudinger type inequality in odd dimension

Given a smoothly bounded domain $Ω\Subset\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\ge 1$ odd, we study the blow-up of bounded sequences $(u_k)\subset H^\frac{n}{2}_{00}(Ω)$ of solutions to the non-local equation $$(-Δ)^\frac n2 u_k=λ_k u_ke^{\frac n2 u_k^2}\quad \text{in }Ω,$$ where $λ_k\toλ_\infty \in [0,\infty)$, and $H^{\frac n2}_{00}(Ω)$ denotes the Lions-Magenes spaces of functions $u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ which are supported in $Ω$ and with $(-Δ)^\frac{n}{4}u\in L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Extending previous works of Druet, Robert-Struwe and the second author, we show that if the sequence $(u_k)$ is not bounded in $L^\infty(Ω)$, a suitably rescaled subsequence $η_k$ converges to the function $η_0(x)=\log\left(\frac{2}{1+|x|^2}\right)$, which solves the prescribed non-local $Q$-curvature equation $$(-Δ)^\frac n2 η=(n-1)!e^{nη}\quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^n$$ recently studied by Da Lio-Martinazzi-Rivière when $n=1$, Jin-Maalaoui-Martinazzi-Xiong when $n=3$, and Hyder when $n\ge 5$ is odd. We infer that blow-up can occur only if $Λ:=\limsup_{k\to \infty}\|(-Δ)^\frac n4 u_k\|_{L^2}^2\ge Λ_1:= (n-1)!|S^n|$.

Nonlinear commutators for the fractional p-Laplacian and applications

We prove a nonlocal, nonlinear commutator estimate concerning the transfer of derivatives onto testfunctions. For the fractional $p$-Laplace operator it implies that solutions to certain degenerate nonlocal equations are higher differentiable. Also, weak fractional $p$-harmonic functions which a priori are less regular than variational solutions are in fact classical. As an application we show that sequences of uniformly bounded $\frac{n}{s}$-harmonic maps converge strongly outside at most finitely many points.

A notion of nonpositive curvature for general metric spaces

We introduce a new definition of nonpositive curvature in metric spaces and study its relationship to the existing notions of nonpositive curvature in comparison geometry. The main feature of our definition is that it applies to all metric spaces and does not rely on geodesics. Moreover, a scaled and a relaxed version of our definition are appropriate in discrete metric spaces, and are believed to be of interest in geometric data analysis.

Integro-differential harmonic maps into spheres

We introduce (integro-differential) harmonic maps into spheres, which are defined as critical points of the Besov-Slobodeckij energy $\int\limits_Ω\int\limits_Ω \frac{|v(x)-v(y)|^{p_s}}{|x-y|^{n+sp_s}}\ dx\ dy$. For $p_s = 2$ these are the classical fractional harmonic maps first considered by Da Lio and Riviere. For $p_s \neq 2$ this is a new energy which has degenerate, non-local Euler-Lagrange equations. For the critical case, $p_s = n/s$, we show Holder continuity of these maps.

preprint2014arXiv

Lp-gradient harmonic maps into spheres and SO(N)

We consider critical points of the energy $E(v) := \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} |\nabla^s v|^{\frac{n}{s}}$, where $v$ maps locally into the sphere or $SO(N)$, and $\nabla^s = (\partial_1^s,\ldots,\partial_n^s)$ is the formal fractional gradient, i.e. $\partial_α^s$ is a composition of the fractional laplacian with the $α$-th Riesz transform. We show that critical points of this energy are Hölder continuous. As a special case, for $s = 1$, we obtain a new, more stable proof of Fuchs and Strzelecki's regularity result of $n$-harmonic maps into the sphere, which is interesting on its own.

A Game-Tree approach to discrete infinity Laplacian with running costs

We give a self-contained and elementary proof for boundedness, existence, and uniqueness of solutions to dynamic programming principles (DPP) for biased tug-of-war games with running costs. The domain we work in is very general, and as a special case contains metric spaces. Technically, we introduce game-trees and show that a discretized flow converges uniformly, from which we obtain not only the existence, but also the uniqueness. Our arguments are entirely deterministic, and also do not rely on (semi-)continuity in any way; in particular, we do not need to mollify the DPP at the boundary for well-posedness.

A note on zero sets of fractional sobolev functions with negative power of integrability

We extend a Poincaré-type inequality for functions with large zero-sets by Jiang and Lin to fractional Sobolev spaces. As a consequence, we obtain a Hausdorff dimension estimate on the size of zero sets for fractional Sobolev functions whose inverse is integrable. Also, for a suboptimal Hausdorff dimension estimate, we give a completely elementary proof based on a pointwise Poincaré-style inequality.

Homotopy groups of spheres and Lipschitz homotopy groups of Heisenberg groups

We provide a sufficient condition for the nontriviality of the Lipschitz homotopy group of the Heisenberg group, $π_m^{Lip}(H_n)$, in terms of properties of the classical homotopy group of the sphere, $π_m(S^n)$. As an application we provide a new simplified proof of the fact that $π_n^{Lip}(H_n)\neq 0$, $n=1,2,...$, and we prove a new result that $π_{4n-1}^{Lip}(H_{2n})\neq 0$ for $n=1,2,...$ The last result is based on a new generalization of the Hopf invariant. We also prove that Lipschitz mappings are not dense in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(M,H_{2n})$ when $dim M\geq 4n$ and $4n-1\leq p<4n$.

Lipschitz homotopy and density of Lipschitz mappings in Sobolev spaces

We construct a smooth compact n-dimensional manifold Y with one point singularity such that all its Lipschitz homotopy groups are trivial, but Lipschitz mappings Lip(S^n,Y) are not dense in the Sobolev space W^{1,n}(S^n,Y). On the other hand we show that if a metric space Y is Lipschitz (n-1)-connected, then Lipschitz mappings Lip(X,Y) are dense in N^{1,p}(X,Y) whenever the Nagata dimension of X is bounded by n and the space X supports the p-Poincare inequality.

Hard analysis meets critical knots (Stationary points of the Moebius energy are smooth)

We prove that if a curve parametrized by arc length is a stationary point of the Moebius energy introduced by Jun O'Hara, then it is smooth whenever the Moebius energy is finite. Our methods, interestingly, only rely on purely analytical arguments, entirely without using Moebius invariance. Furthermore, the techniques involved are not fundamentally restricted to one-dimensional domains, but are generalizable to arbitrary dimensions.

ε-regularity for systems involving non-local, antisymmetric operators

We prove an epsilon-regularity theorem for critical and super-critical systems with a non-local antisymmetric operator on the right-hand side. These systems contain as special cases, Euler-Lagrange equations of conformally invariant variational functionals as Rivière treated them, and also Euler-Lagrange equations of fractional harmonic maps introduced by Da Lio-Rivière. In particular, the arguments presented here give new and uniform proofs of the regularity results by Rivière, Rivière-Struwe, Da-Lio-Rivière, and also the integrability results by Sharp-Topping and Sharp, not discriminating between the classical local, and the non-local situations.

Interior and Boundary-Regularity for Fractional Harmonic Maps on Domains

We prove continuity on domains up to the boundary for n/2-polyharmonic maps into manifolds. Technically, we show how to adapt Helein's direct approach to the fractional setting. This extends a remark by the author that this is possible in the setting of Riviere's famous regularity result for critical points of conformally invariant variational functionals. Moreover, pointwise behavior for the involved three-commutators is established. Continuity up to the boundary is then obtained via an adaption of Hildebrandt and Kaul's technique to the non-local setting.

Regularity of n/2-harmonic maps into spheres

We prove Hoelder continuity for n/2-harmonic maps from subsets of Rn into a sphere. This extends a recent one-dimensional result by F. Da Lio and T. Riviere to arbitrary dimensions. The proof relies on compensation effects which we quantify adapting an approach for Wente's inequality by L. Tartar, instead of Besov-space arguments which were used in the one-dimensional case. Moreover, fractional analogues of Hodge decomposition and higher order Poincare inequalities as well as several localization effects for nonlocal operators similar to the fractional laplacian are developed and applied.

A Remark on Gauge Transformations and the Moving Frame Method

In this note we give a shorter proof of recent regularity results by Riviere and Riviere-Struwe. We differ from the mentioned articles only in using the direct method of Helein's moving frame to construct a suitable gauge transformation. Though this is neither new nor surprising, it enables us to describe a proof of regularity using besides the duality of Hardy- and BMO-space only elementary arguments of calculus of variations and algebraic identities. Moreover, we remark that in order to prove Hildebrandt's conjecture one can avoid the Nash-Moser imbedding theorem. There are no new results presented here, nor are there any techniques we could claim originality for.

Boundary regularity via Uhlenbeck-Rivière decomposition

We prove that weak solutions of systems with skew-symmetric structure, which possess a continuous boundary trace, have to be continuous up to the boundary. This applies, e.g., to the H-surface system with bounded H and thus extends an earlier result by P. Strzelecki and proves the natural counterpart of a conjecture by E. Heinz. Methodically, we use estimates below natural exponents of integrability and a recent decomposition result by T.Rivière.
