Stabilisation of a viscous conservation law by a one-dimensional external force

We study a damped scalar conservation law driven by the sum of a fixed external force and a localised one-dimensional control. The problem is considered in a bounded domain and is supplemented with the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is proved that any solution of the uncontrolled equation can be exponentially stabilised. As a consequence, we obtain the global approximate controllability to trajectories by a one-dimensional localised control.

Entropic fluctuations in thermally driven harmonic networks

We consider a general network of harmonic oscillators driven out of thermal equilibrium by coupling to several heat reservoirs at different temperatures. The action of the reservoirs is implemented by Langevin forces. Assuming the existence and uniqueness of the steady state of the resulting process, we construct a canonical entropy production functional which satisfies the Gallavotti--Cohen fluctuation theorem, i.e., a global large deviation principle with a rate function I(s) obeying the Gallavotti--Cohen fluctuation relation I(-s)-I(s)=s for all s. We also consider perturbations of our functional by quadratic boundary terms and prove that they satisfy extended fluctuation relations, i.e., a global large deviation principle with a rate function that typically differs from I(s) outside a finite interval. This applies to various physically relevant functionals and, in particular, to the heat dissipation rate of the network. Our approach relies on the properties of the maximal solution of a one-parameter family of algebraic matrix Riccati equations. It turns out that the limiting cumulant generating functions of our functional and its perturbations can be computed in terms of spectral data of a Hamiltonian matrix depending on the harmonic potential of the network and the parameters of the Langevin reservoirs. This approach is well adapted to both analytical and numerical investigations.

Global exponential stabilisation for the Burgers equation with localised control

We consider the 1D viscous Burgers equation with a control localised in a finite interval. It is proved that, for any $\varepsilon>0$, one can find a time $T$ of order $\log\varepsilon^{-1}$ such that any initial state can be steered to the $\varepsilon$-neighbourhood of a given trajectory at time $T$. This property combined with an earlier result on local exact controllability shows that the Burgers equation is globally exactly controllable to trajectories in a finite time. We also prove that the approximate controllability to arbitrary targets does not hold even if we allow infinite time of control.

Mixing for the Burgers equation driven by a localised two-dimensional stochastic forcing

We consider the one-dimensional Burgers equation perturbed by a stochastic forcing, which is assumed to be white in time and localised and low-dimensional in space. We establish a mixing property for the Markov process associated with the problem in question. The proof is based on a general criterion for mixing and a recent result on global approximate controllability to trajectories for damped conservation laws.

Entropic fluctuations in Gaussian dynamical systems

We study non-equilibrium statistical mechanics of a Gaussian dynamical system and compute in closed form the large deviation functionals describing the fluctuations of the entropy production observable with respect to the reference state and the non-equilibrium steady state. The entropy production observable of this model is an unbounded function on the phase space, and its large deviation functionals have a surprisingly rich structure. We explore this structure in some detail.

Large deviations and Gallavotti-Cohen principle for dissipative PDE's with rough noise

We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by an unbounded kick force. Under some natural assumptions, the restrictions of solutions to integer times form a homogeneous Markov process. Assuming that the noise is rough with respect to the space variables and has a non-degenerate law, we prove that the system in question satisfies a large deviation principle in tau-topology. Under some additional hypotheses, we establish a Gallavotti-Cohen type symmetry for the rate function of an entropy production functional and the strict positivity and finiteness of the mean entropy production in the stationary regime. The latter result is applicable to PDE's with strong nonlinear dissipation.

Large deviations and mixing for dissipative PDE's with unbounded random kicks

We study the problem of exponential mixing and large deviations for discrete-time Markov processes associated with a class of random dynamical systems. Under some dissipativity and regularisation hypotheses for the underlying deterministic dynamics and a non-degeneracy condition for the driving random force, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a stationary measure and its exponential stability in the Kantorovich-Wasserstein metric. We next turn to the large deviation principle and establish its validity for the occupation measures of the Markov processes in question. The obtained results extend those established earlier for the case of the bounded noise and can be applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain and to the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Approximate controllability of the viscous Burgers equation on the real line

The paper is devoted to studying the 1D viscous Burgers equation controlled by an external force. It is assumed that the initial state is essentially bounded, with no decay condition at infinity, and the control is a trigonometric polynomial of low degree with respect to the space variable. We construct explicitly a control space of dimension 11 that enables one to steer the system to any neighbourhood of a given final state in local topologies. The proof of this result is based on an adaptation of the Agrachev-Sarychev approach to the case of an unbounded domain.

Exponential attractors for random dynamical systems and applications

The paper is devoted to constructing a random exponential attractor for some classes of stochastic PDE's. We first prove the existence of an exponential attractor for abstract random dynamical systems and study its dependence on a parameter and then apply these results to a nonlinear reaction-diffusion system with a random perturbation. We show, in particular, that the attractors can be constructed in such a way that the symmetric distance between the attractors for stochastic and deterministic problems goes to zero with the amplitude of the random perturbation.

Large deviations from a stationary measure for a class of dissipative PDE's with random kicks

We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by a bounded random kick force. It is assumed that the random force is non-degenerate, so that the Markov process obtained by the restriction of solutions to integer times has a unique stationary measure. The main result of the paper is a large deviation principle for occupation measures of the Markov process in question. The proof is based on Kifer's large deviation criterion, a Lyapunov-Schmidt type reduction, and an abstract result on large-time asymptotic for generalised Markov semigroups.

Local feedback stabilisation to a non-stationary solution for a damped non-linear wave equation

We study a damped semi-linear wave equation in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is proved that any sufficiently smooth solution can be stabilised locally by a finite-dimensional feedback control supported by a given open subset satisfying a geometric condition. The proof is based on an investigation of the linearised equation, for which we construct a stabilising control satisfying the required properties. We next prove that the same control stabilises locally the non-linear problem.

preprint2011arXiv

Control and mixing for 2D Navier-Stokes equations with space-time localised noise

We consider randomly forced 2D Navier-Stokes equations in a bounded domain with smooth boundary. It is assumed that the random perturba- tion is non-degenerate, and its law is periodic in time and has a support localised with respect to space and time. Concerning the unperturbed problem, we assume that it is approximately controllable in infinite time by an external force whose support is included in that of the random force. Under these hypotheses, we prove that the Markov process generated by the restriction of solutions to the instants of time proportional to the period possesses a unique stationary distribution, which is exponentially mixing. The proof is based on a coupling argument, a local controllability property of the Navier-Stokes system, an estimate for the total variation distance between a measure and its image under a smooth mapping, and some classical results from the theory of optimal transport.

preprint2010arXiv

Internal exponential stabilization to a non-stationary solution for 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain with a smooth boundary. Given a sufficiently regular time-dependent global solution, we construct a finite-dimensional feedback control that is supported by a given open set and stabilizes the linearized equation. The proof of this fact is based on a truncated observability inequality, the regularizing property for the linearized equation, and some standard techniques of the optimal control theory. We then show that the control constructed for the linear problem stabilizes locally also the full Navier-Stokes system.

Local times for solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation and the inviscid limit

We consider the behaviour of the distribution for stationary solutions of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation perturbed by a random force. It was proved earlier that if the random force is proportional to the square root of the viscosity, then the family of stationary measures possesses an accumulation point as the viscosity goes to zero. We show that if $μ$ is such point, then the distributions of the L^2 norm and of the energy possess a density with respect to the Lebesgue measure. The proofs are based on Itô's formula and some properties of local time for semimartingales.
