Large deviations principle via Malliavin calculus for the Navier-Stokes system driven by a degenerate white-in-time noise

The purpose of this paper is to establish the Donsker-Varadhan type large deviations principle (LDP) for the two-dimensional stochastic Navier-Stokes system. The main novelty is that the noise is assumed to be highly degenerate in the Fourier space. The proof is carried out by using a criterion for the LDP developed in arXiv:1410.6188 in a discrete-time setting and extended in arXiv:1505.03686 to the continuous-time. One of the main conditions of that criterion is the uniform Feller property for the Feynman-Kac semigroup, which we verify by using Malliavin calculus.

Local exact controllability of the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider the 1D nonlinear Schrödinger equation with bilinear control. In the case of Neumann boundary conditions, local exact controllability of this equation near the ground state has been proved by Beauchard and Laurent in arXiv:1001.3288. In this paper, we study the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions. To establish the controllability of the linearised equation, we use a bilinear control acting through four directions: three Fourier modes and one generic direction. The Fourier modes are appropriately chosen so that they satisfy a saturation property. These modes allow to control approximately the linearised Schrödinger equation. We show that the reachable set for the linearised equation is closed. This is achieved by representing the resolving operator as a sum of two linear continuous mappings: one is surjective (here the control in generic direction is used) and the other is compact. A mapping with dense and closed image is surjective, so the linearised Schrödinger equation is exactly controllable. Then local exact controllability of the nonlinear equation is derived using the inverse mapping theorem.

Bilinear control and growth of Sobolev norms for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) on a torus of arbitrary dimension. The equation is studied in presence of an external potential field whose time-dependent amplitude is taken as control. Assuming that the potential satisfies a saturation property, we show that the NLS equation is approximately controllable between any pair of eigenstates in arbitrarily small time. The proof is obtained by developing a multiplicative version of a geometric control approach introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev. We give an application of this result to the study of the large time behavior of the NLS equation with random potential. More precisely, we assume that the amplitude of the potential is a random process whose law is $1$-periodic in time and non-degenerate. Combining the controllability with a stopping time argument and the Markov property, we show that the trajectories of the random equation are almost surely unbounded in regular Sobolev spaces.

Approximate controllability of nonlinear parabolic PDEs in arbitrary space dimension

In this paper, we consider a parabolic PDE on a torus of arbitrary dimension. The nonlinear term is a smooth function of polynomial growth of any degree. In this general setting, the corresponding Cauchy problem is not necessarily well posed. We show that the equation in question is approximately controllable by only a finite number of Fourier modes. This result is proved by using some ideas from the geometric control theory introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev.

Multiplicative ergodic theorem for a non-irreducible random dynamical system

We study the asymptotic properties of the trajectories of a discrete-time random dynamical system in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Under some natural assumptions on the model, we establish a multiplica-tive ergodic theorem with an exponential rate of convergence. The assumptions are satisfied for a large class of parabolic PDEs, including the 2D Navier--Stokes and complex Ginzburg--Landau equations perturbed by a non-degenerate bounded random kick force. As a consequence of this er-godic theorem, we derive some new results on the statistical properties of the trajectories of the underlying random dynamical system. In particular , we obtain large deviations principle for the occupation measures and the analyticity of the pressure function in a setting where the system is not irreducible. The proof relies on a refined version of the uniform Feller property combined with some contraction and bootstrap arguments.

Approximate controllability of Lagrangian trajectories of the 3D Navier-Stokes system by a finite-dimensional force

In the Eulerian approach, the motion of an incompressible fluid is usually described by the velocity field which is given by the Navier--Stokes system. The velocity field generates a flow in the space of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. The latter plays a central role in the Lagrangian description of a fluid, since it allows to identify the trajectories of individual particles. In this paper, we show that the velocity field of the fluid and the corresponding flow of diffeomorphisms can be simultaneously approximately controlled using a finite-dimensional external force. The proof is based on some methods from the geometric control theory introduced by Agrachev and Sarychev.

Local large deviations principle for occupation measures of the damped nonlinear wave equation perturbed by a white noise

We consider the damped nonlinear wave (NLW) equation driven by a spatially regular white noise. Assuming that the noise is non-degenerate in all Fourier modes, we establish a large deviations principle (LDP) for the occupation measures of the trajectories. The lower bound in the LDP is of a local type, which is related to the weakly dissipative nature of the equation and seems to be new in the context of randomly forced PDE's. The proof is based on an extension of methods developed in \cite{JNPS-2012} and \cite{JNPS-2014} in the case of kick forced dissipative PDE's with parabolic regularisation property such as, for example, the Navier-Stokes system and the complex Ginzburg-Landau equations. We also show that a high concentration towards the stationary measure is impossible, by proving that the rate function that governs the LDP cannot have the trivial form (i.e., vanish on the stationary measure and be infinite elsewhere).

Large deviations and Gallavotti-Cohen principle for dissipative PDE's with rough noise

We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by an unbounded kick force. Under some natural assumptions, the restrictions of solutions to integer times form a homogeneous Markov process. Assuming that the noise is rough with respect to the space variables and has a non-degenerate law, we prove that the system in question satisfies a large deviation principle in tau-topology. Under some additional hypotheses, we establish a Gallavotti-Cohen type symmetry for the rate function of an entropy production functional and the strict positivity and finiteness of the mean entropy production in the stationary regime. The latter result is applicable to PDE's with strong nonlinear dissipation.

Large deviations and mixing for dissipative PDE's with unbounded random kicks

We study the problem of exponential mixing and large deviations for discrete-time Markov processes associated with a class of random dynamical systems. Under some dissipativity and regularisation hypotheses for the underlying deterministic dynamics and a non-degeneracy condition for the driving random force, we discuss the existence and uniqueness of a stationary measure and its exponential stability in the Kantorovich-Wasserstein metric. We next turn to the large deviation principle and establish its validity for the occupation measures of the Markov processes in question. The obtained results extend those established earlier for the case of the bounded noise and can be applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain and to the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Global exact controllability of a 1D Schrödinger equations with a polarizability term

We consider a quantum particle in a 1D interval submitted to a potential. The evolution of this particle is controlled using an external electric field. Taking into account the so-called polarizability term in the model (quadratic with respect to the control), we prove global exact controllability in a suitable space for arbitrary potential and arbitrary dipole moment. This term is relevant both from the mathematical and physical points of view. The proof uses tools from the bilinear setting and a perturbation argument.

Simultaneous global exact controllability of an arbitrary number of 1D bilinear Schrödinger equations

We consider a system of an arbitrary number of \textsc{1d} linear Schrödinger equations on a bounded interval with bilinear control. We prove global exact controllability in large time of these $N$ equations with a single control. This result is valid for an arbitrary potential with generic assumptions on the dipole moment of the considered particle. Thus, even in the case of a single particle, this result extends the available literature. The proof combines local exact controllability around finite sums of eigenstates, proved with Coron's return method, a global approximate controllability property, proved with Lyapunov strategy, and a compactness argument.

Global exact controllability in infinite time of Schrödinger equation: multidimensional case

We prove that the multidimensional Schrödinger equation is exactly controllable in infinite time near any point which is a finite linear combination of eigenfunctions of the Schrödinger operator. We prove that, generically with respect to the potential, the linearized system is controllable in infinite time. Applying the inverse mapping theorem, we prove the controllability of the nonlinear system.

Large deviations from a stationary measure for a class of dissipative PDE's with random kicks

We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by a bounded random kick force. It is assumed that the random force is non-degenerate, so that the Markov process obtained by the restriction of solutions to integer times has a unique stationary measure. The main result of the paper is a large deviation principle for occupation measures of the Markov process in question. The proof is based on Kifer's large deviation criterion, a Lyapunov-Schmidt type reduction, and an abstract result on large-time asymptotic for generalised Markov semigroups.

Stochastic CGL equations without linear dispersion in any space dimension

We consider the stochastic CGL equation $$ \dot u- νΔu+(i+a) |u|^2u =η(t,x),\;\;\; \text {dim} \,x=n, $$ where $ν>0$ and $a\ge 0$, in a cube (or in a smooth bounded domain) with Dirichlet boundary condition. The force $η$ is white in time, regular in $x$ and non-degenerate. We study this equation in the space of continuous complex functions $u(x)$, and prove that for any $n$ it defines there a unique mixing Markov process. So for a large class of functionals $f(u(\cdot))$ and for any solution $u(t,x)$, the averaged observable $\E f(u(t,\cdot))$ converges to a quantity, independent from the initial data $u(0,x)$, and equal to the integral of $f(u)$ against the unique stationary measure of the equation.

Semi-global weak stabilization of bilinear Schrödinger equations

We consider a linear Schrödinger equation, on a bounded domain, with bilinear control, representing a quantum particle in an electric field (the control). Recently, Nersesyan proposed explicit feedback laws and proved the existence of a sequence of times $(t_n)_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$ for which the values of the solution of the closed loop system converge weakly in $H^2$ to the ground state. Here, we prove the convergence of the whole solution, as $t \rightarrow + \infty$. The proof relies on control Lyapunov functions and an adaptation of the LaSalle invariance principle to PDEs.

Growth of Sobolev norms and controllability of Schrödinger equation

In this paper we obtain a stabilization result for the Schrödinger equation under generic assumptions on the potential. Then we consider the Schrödinger equation with a potential which has a random time-dependent amplitude. We show that if the distribution of the amplitude is sufficiently non-degenerate, then any trajectory of system is almost surely non-bounded in Sobolev spaces.
