Multilevel Representations of Isotropic Gaussian Random Fields on the Sphere

Series expansions of isotropic Gaussian random fields on $\mathbb{S}^2$ with independent Gaussian coefficients and localized basis functions are constructed. Such representations with multilevel localised structure provide an alternative to the standard Karhunen-Loève expansions of isotropic random fields in terms of spherical harmonics. The basis functions are obtained by applying the square root of the covariance operator to spherical needlets. Localization of the resulting covariance-dependent multilevel basis is shown under decay conditions on the angular power spectrum of the random field. In addition, numerical illustrations are given and an application to random elliptic PDEs on the sphere is analyzed.

Rough homogenization for Langevin dynamics on fluctuating Helfrich surfaces

In this paper, we study different scaling rough path limit regimes in space and time for the Langevin dynamics on a quasi-planar fluctuating Helfrich surfaces. The convergence results of the processes were already proven in the work by Duncan, Elliott, Pavliotis and Stuart (2015). We extend this work by proving the convergence of the Itô and Stratonovich rough path lift. For the rough path limit, there appears, typically, an area correction term to the Itô iterated integrals, and in certain regimes to the Stratonovich iterated integrals. This yields additional information on the homogenization limit and enables to conclude on homogenization results for diffusions driven by the Brownian motion on the membrane using the continuity of the Itô-Lyons map in rough paths topology.

Stabilisation of a viscous conservation law by a one-dimensional external force

We study a damped scalar conservation law driven by the sum of a fixed external force and a localised one-dimensional control. The problem is considered in a bounded domain and is supplemented with the Dirichlet boundary condition. It is proved that any solution of the uncontrolled equation can be exponentially stabilised. As a consequence, we obtain the global approximate controllability to trajectories by a one-dimensional localised control.

From interacting agents to density-based modeling with stochastic PDEs

Many real-world processes can naturally be modeled as systems of interacting agents. However, the long-term simulation of such agent-based models is often intractable when the system becomes too large. In this paper, starting from a stochastic spatio-temporal agent-based model (ABM), we present a reduced model in terms of stochastic PDEs that describes the evolution of agent number densities for large populations. We discuss the algorithmic details of both approaches; regarding the SPDE model, we apply Finite Element discretization in space which not only ensures efficient simulation but also serves as a regularization of the SPDE. Illustrative examples for the spreading of an innovation among agents are given and used for comparing ABM and SPDE models.
