Revisiting the Mazur bound and the Suzuki equality

Among the few known rigorous results for time-dependent equilibrium correlations, important for understanding transport properties, are the Mazur bound and the Suzuki equality. The Mazur inequality gives a lower bound, on the long-time average of the time-dependent auto-correlation function of observables, in terms of equilibrium correlation functions involving conserved quantities. On the other hand, Suzuki proposes an exact equality for quantum systems. In this paper, we discuss the relation between the two results and in particular, look for the analogue of the Suzuki result for classical systems. This requires us to examine as to what constitutes a complete set of conserved quantities required to saturate the Mazur bound. We present analytic arguments as well as illustrative numerical results from a number of different systems. Our examples include systems with few degrees of freedom as well as many-particle integrable models, both free and interacting.

RMS-Flux Relation and Disc-Jet Connection in Blazars in the Context of the Internal Shocks Model

Recent analysis of blazar variability has revealed a proportionality between the mean flux and the root mean squared (rms) fluctuations about the mean flux. Although such rms-flux relation has been previously observed in the accretion disc/corona variability of X-ray binaries and Seyfert galaxies, and has been extensively modelled, its emergence in the jet light curves of blazars calls for a revised theoretical understanding of this feature. In this work, we analyse the time variability properties of realistic multi-wavelength jet light curves, simulated in the context of a simplified version of the internal shocks model, particularly focusing on the rms-flux relation. These shocks accelerate the jet electrons to relativistic energies, which then cool radiatively via synchrotron and inverse-Compton processes. We find that the rms-flux relation may be consistently recovered in the cases, in which the shocks have different amplitudes based on the speed of the colliding blobs generating them as opposed to all shocks having the same amplitude. We observe that the slope of the rms-flux relation depends on the wavelength at which the variability is observed and the energy distribution of the electron population. We find that the accretion disc and the jet variability are anti-correlated, with the latter lagging that of the disc. Our results provide crucial constraints on the physical properties of the jet, and the mode of connection through which the accretion disc and jet may be related.

Equilibrium dynamical correlations in the Toda chain and other integrable models

We investigate the form of equilibrium spatio-temporal correlation functions of conserved quantities, and of energy transport in the Toda lattice and in other integrable models. From numerical simulations we find that the correlations satisfy ballistic scaling with a remarkable collapse of data from different times. We examine special limiting choices of parameter values, for which the Toda lattice tends to either the harmonic chain or the equal mass hard-particle gas. In both these limiting cases, one can obtain the correlations exactly and we find excellent agreement with the direct Toda simulation results. We also discuss a transformation to "normal mode" variables, as commonly done in hydrodynamic theory of non-integrable systems, and find that this is useful, to some extent, even for the integrable system.

Distribution of quantum discord in Heisenberg Antiferromagnets

The quantum discord, which quantifies the amount of quantum correlations present between parts of a system, is investigated for antiferromagnetic spin systems. The discord for a pair of spins in the many-spin ground state is related to the diagonal and off-diagonal spin-spin correlation functions and the local magnetization. For isotropic and translationally invariant states, the discord is shown to be a function of the diagonal correlation function only. Thus, near a thermal/quantum critical point, the discord for a pair of spins shows long-range behavior, analogously of the correlation function. The discord exhibits a kink singularity as a function of the anisotropy parameter for the the ground state of the Heisenberg model, for both nearest-neighbor spins as well as for well-separated spins. The preferred measurement basis for the minimum conditional entropy, which determines the discord, changes discontinuously across the critical point. The conditional entropy distribution over all possible the measurement basis is investigated. For the isotropic model, the distribution is just a delta-function, whereas it has a twin-peak structure for anisotropic model. It is shown that the average value and the mean-square fluctuation of the conditional entropy also show a signature of the critical-point behavior.

Mass of highly magnetized white dwarfs exceeding the Chandrasekhar limit: An analytical view

In recent years a number of white dwarfs has been observed with very high surface magnetic fields. We can expect that the magnetic field in the core of these stars would be much higher (~ 10^{14} G). In this paper, we analytically study the effect of high magnetic field on relativistic cold electron, and hence its effect on the stability and the mass-radius relation of a magnetic white dwarf. In strong magnetic fields, the equation of state of the Fermi gas is modified and Landau quantization comes into play. For relatively very high magnetic fields (with respect to the energy density of matter) the number of Landau levels is restricted to one or two. We analyse the equation of states for magnetized electron degenerate gas analytically and attempt to understand the conditions in which transitions from the zero-th Landau level to first Landau level occur. We also find the effect of the strong magnetic field on the star collapsing to a white dwarf, and the mass-radius relation of the resulting star. We obtain an interesting theoretical result that it is possible to have white dwarfs with mass more than the mass set by Chandrasekhar limit.
