Partial regularity of the heat flow of half-harmonic maps and applications to harmonic maps with free boundary

We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.

Motion of vortices for the extrinsic Ginzburg-Landau flow for vector fields on surfaces

We consider the gradient flow of a Ginzburg-Landau functional of the type \[ F_\varepsilon^{\mathrm{extr}}(u):=\frac{1}{2}\int_M \left|D u\right|_g^2 + \left|\mathscr{S} u\right|^2_g +\frac{1}{2\varepsilon^2}\left(\left|u\right|^2_g-1\right)^2\mathrm{vol}_g \] which is defined for tangent vector fields (here $D$ stands for the covariant derivative) on a closed surface $M\subseteq\mathbb{R}^3$ and includes extrinsic effects via the shape operator $\mathscr{S}$ induced by the Euclidean embedding of~$M$. The functional depends on the small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. When $\varepsilon$ is small it is clear from the structure of the Ginzburg-Landau functional that $\left|u\right|_g$ ''prefers'' to be close to $1$. However, due to the incompatibility for vector fields on $M$ between the Sobolev regularity and the unit norm constraint, when $\varepsilon$ is close to $0$, it is expected that a finite number of singular points (called vortices) having non-zero index emerges (when the Euler characteristic is non-zero). This intuitive picture has been made precise in the recent work by R. Ignat \& R. Jerrard [7]. In this paper we are interested the dynamics of vortices generated by $F_\varepsilon^{\mathrm{extr}}$. To this end we study the behavior when $\varepsilon\to 0$ of the solutions of the (properly rescaled) gradient flow of $F_\varepsilon^{\mathrm{extr}}$. In the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$ we obtain the effective dynamics of the vortices. The dynamics, as expected, is influenced by both the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the surface $M\subseteq\mathbb{R}^3$.

On a fractional thin film equation

This paper deals with a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation of order $α$ between 2 and 4 which is a kind of fractional version of the Thin Film Equation. Actually, this one corresponds to the limit value $α=4$ while the Porous Medium Equation is the limit $α=2$. We prove existence of a nonnegative weak solution for a general class of initial data, and establish its main properties. We also construct the special solutions in self-similar form which turn out to be explicit and compactly supported. As in the porous medium case, they are supposed to give the long time behaviour or the wide class of solutions. This last result is proved to be true under some assumptions. Lastly, we consider nonlocal equations with the same nonlinear structure but with order from 4 to 6. For these equations we construct self-similar solutions that are positive and compactly supported, thus contributing to the higher order theory.

Analysis of a variational model for nematic shells

We analyze an elastic surface energy which was recently introduced by G. Napoli and L.Vergori to model thin films of nematic liquid crystals. We show how a novel approach that takes into account also the extrinsic properties of the surfaces coated by the liquid crystal leads to considerable differences with respect to the classical intrinsic energy. Our results concern three connected aspects: i) using methods of the calculus of variations, we establish a relation between the existence of minimizers and the topology of the surface; ii) we prove, by a Ginzburg-Landau approximation, the well-posedness of the gradient flow of the energy; iii) in the case of a parametrized axisymmetric torus we obtain a stronger characterization of global and local minimizers, which we supplement with numerical experiments.

Quantitative estimates on localized finite differences for the fractional Poisson problem, and applications to regularity and spectral stability

We establish new quantitative estimates for localized finite differences of solutions to the Poisson problem for the fractional Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions of solid type settled in bounded domains satisfying the Lipschitz cone regularity condition. We then apply these estimates to obtain (i)~regularity results for solutions of fractional Poisson problems in Besov spaces; (ii)~quantitative stability estimates for solutions of fractional Poisson problems with respect to domain perturbations; (iii)~quantitative stability estimates for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of fractional Laplace operators with respect to domain perturbations.

Fractional Cahn-Hilliard, Allen-Cahn and porous medium equations

We introduce a fractional variant of the Cahn-Hilliard equation settled in a bounded domain $Ω$ of $R^N$ and complemented with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions of solid type (i.e., imposed in the entire complement of $Ω$). After setting a proper functional framework, we prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions to the related initial-boundary value problem. Then, we investigate some significant singular limits obtained as the order of either of the fractional Laplacians appearing in the equation is let tend to 0. In particular, we can rigorously prove that the fractional Allen-Cahn, fractional porous medium, and fractional fast-diffusion equations can be obtained in the limit. Finally, in the last part of the paper, we discuss existence and qualitative properties of stationary solutions of our problem and of its singular limits.

Morse's index formula in VMO for compact manifolds with boundary

In this paper, we study Vanishing Mean Oscillation vector fields on a compact manifold with boundary. Inspired by the work of Brezis and Niremberg, we construct a topological invariant - the index - for such fields, and establish the analogue of Morse's formula. As a consequence, we characterize the set of boundary data which can be extended to nowhere vanishing VMO vector fields. Finally, we show briefly how these ideas can be applied to (unoriented) line fields with VMO regularity, thus providing a reasonable framework for modelling a surface coated with a thin film of nematic liquid crystals.

Non-existence and instantaneous extinction of solutions for singular nonlinear fractional diffusion equations

We show non-existence of solutions of the Cauchy problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for the nonlinear parabolic equation involving fractional diffusion $\partial_t u + (-Δ)^s ϕ(u)= 0,$ with $0<s<1$ and very singular nonlinearities $ϕ$ . More precisely, we prove that when $ϕ(u)=-1/u^n$ with $n>0$, or $ϕ(u) = \log u$, and we take nonnegative $L^1$ initial data, there is no (nonnegative) solution of the problem in any dimension $N\ge 2$. We find the range of non-existence when $N=1$ in terms of $s$ and $n$. The range of exponents that we find for non-existence both for parabolic and elliptic equations are optimal. Non-existence is then proved for more general nonlinearities $ϕ$, and it is also extended to the related elliptic problem of nonlinear nonlocal type: $u + (-Δ)^s ϕ(u) = f$ with the same type of nonlinearity $ϕ$.

On a singular heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper we analyze a nonlinear parabolic equation characterized by a singular diffusion term describing very fast diffusion effects. The equation is settled in a smooth bounded three-dimensional domain and complemented with a general boundary condition of dynamic type. This type of condition prescribes some kind of mass conservation; hence extinction effects are not expected for solutions that emanate from strictly positive initial data. Our main results regard existence of weak solutions, instantaneous regularization properties, long-time behavior, and, under special conditions, uniqueness.

Equilibrium configurations of nematic liquid crystals on a torus

The topology and the geometry of a surface play a fundamental role in determining the equilibrium configurations of thin films of liquid crystals. We propose here a theoretical analysis of a recently introduced surface Frank energy, in the case of two-dimensional nematic liquid crystals coating a toroidal particle. Our aim is to show how a different modeling of the effect of extrinsic curvature acts as a selection principle among equilibria of the classical energy, and how new configurations emerge. In particular, our analysis predicts the existence of new stable equilibria with complex windings.

The Penrose-Fife phase-field model with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper we derive, starting from the basic principles of Thermodynamics, an extended version of the nonconserved Penrose-Fife phase transition model, in which dynamic boundary conditions are considered in order to take into account interactions with walls. Moreover, we study the well-posedness and the asymptotic behavior of the Cauchy problem for the PDE system associated to the model, allowing the phase configuration of the material to be described by a singular function.

Finite dimensional reduction and convergence to equilibrium for incompressible Smectic-A liquid crystal flows

We consider a hydrodynamic system that models the Smectic-A liquid crystal flow. The model consists of the Navier-Stokes equation for the fluid velocity coupled with a fourth-order equation for the layer variable $\vp$, endowed with periodic boundary conditions. We analyze the long-time behavior of the solutions within the theory of infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems. We first prove that in 2D, the problem possesses a global attractor $\mathcal{A}$ in certain phase space. Then we establish the existence of an exponential attractor $\mathcal{M}$ which entails that the global attractor $\mathcal{A}$ has finite fractal dimension. Moreover, we show that each trajectory converges to a single equilibrium by means of a suitable Lojasiewicz--Simon inequality. Corresponding results in 3D are also discussed.

Finite-dimensional global and exponential attractors for the reaction-diffusion problem with an obstacle potential

A reaction-diffusion problem with an obstacle potential is considered in a bounded domain of $\R^N$. Under the assumption that the obstacle $\K$ is a closed convex and bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary or it is a closed $n$-dimensional simplex, we prove that the long-time behavior of the solution semigroup associated with this problem can be described in terms of an exponential attractor. In particular, the latter means that the fractal dimension of the associated global attractor is also finite.
