Applications of the Lieb--Thirring and other bounds for orthonormal systems in mathematical hydrodynamics

We discuss the estimates for the $L^p$-norms of systems of functions that are orthonormal in $L^2$ and $H^1$, respectively, and their essential role in deriving good or even optimal bounds for the dimension of global attractors for the classical Navier--Stokes equations and for a class of $α$-models approximating them. New applications to interpolation inequalities on the 2D torus are also given.

Attractors for semigroups with multi-dimensional time and PDEs in unbounded domains

We develop the attractors theory for the semigroups with multidimensional time belonging to some closed cone in an Euclidean space and apply the obtained general results to partial differential equations (PDEs) in unbounded domains. The main attention is payed to elliptic boundary problems in general unbounded domains. In contrast to the previous works in this direction our theory does not require the underlying domain to be cylindrical or cone-like or to be shift semi-invariant with respect to some direction. In particular, the theory is applicable to the exterior domains.

Attractors. Then and now

This survey is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Mark Iosifovich Vishik and is based on a number of mini-courses taught by the author at University of Surrey (UK) and Lanzhou University (China). It discusses the classical and modern results of the theory of attractors for dissipative PDEs including attractors for autonomous and non-autonomous equations, dynamical systems in general topological spaces, various types of trajectory, pullback and random attractors, exponential attractors, determining functionals and inertial manifolds as well as the dimension theory for the above mentioned classes of attractors. The theoretical results are illustrated by a number of clarifying examples and counter-examples.

Entropy estimates for uniform attractors of dissipative PDEs with non translation-compact external forces

We study the Kolmogorov's entropy of uniform attractors for non-autonomous dissipative PDEs. The main attention is payed to the case where the external forces are not translation-compact. We present a new general scheme which allows us to give the upper bounds of this entropy for various classes of external forces through the entropy of proper projections of their hulls to the space of translation-compact functions. This result generalizes well known estimates of Vishik and Chepyzhov for the translation-compact case. The obtained results are applied to three model problems: sub-quintic 3D damped wave equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, quintic 3D wave equation with periodic boundary conditions and 2D Navier-Stokes system in a bounded domain. The examples of finite-dimensional uniform attractors for some special external forces which are not translation-compact are also given.

Cesaro summation by spheres of lattice sums and Madelung constants

We study convergence of 3D lattice sums via expanding spheres. It is well-known that, in contrast to summation via expanding cubes, the expanding spheres method may lead to formally divergent series (this will be so e.g. for the classical NaCl-Madelung constant). In the present paper we prove that these series remain convergent in Cesaro sense. For the case of second order Cesaro summation, we present an elementary proof of convergence and the proof for first order Cesaro summation is more involved and is based on the Riemann localization for multi-dimensional Fourier series.

Sharp upper and lower bounds of the attractor dimension for 3D damped Euler-Bardina equations

The dependence of the fractal dimension of global attractors for the damped 3D Euler--Bardina equations on the regularization parameter $α>0$ and Ekman damping coefficient $γ>0$ is studied. We present explicit upper bounds for this dimension for the case of the whole space, periodic boundary conditions, and the case of bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The sharpness of these estimates when $α\to0$ and $γ\to0$ (which corresponds in the limit to the classical Euler equations) is demonstrated on the 3D Kolmogorov flows on a torus.

Smooth extensions for inertial manifolds of semilinear parabolic equations

The paper is devoted to a comprehensive study of smoothness of inertial manifolds for abstract semilinear parabolic problems. It is well known that in general we cannot expect more than $C^{1,\varepsilon}$-regularity for such manifolds (for some positive, but small $\varepsilon$). Nevertheless, as shown in the paper, under the natural assumptions, the obstacles to the existence of a $C^n$-smooth inertial manifold (where $n\in\mathbb N$ is any given number) can be removed by increasing the dimension and by modifying properly the nonlinearity outside of the global attractor (or even outside the $C^{1,\varepsilon}$-smooth IM of a minimal dimension). The proof is strongly based on the Whitney extension theorem.

Asymptotic regularity and attractors for slightly compressible Brinkman-Forcheimer equations

Slightly compressible Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in a bounded 3D domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. These equations model fluids motion in porous media. The dissipativity of these equations in higher order energy spaces is obtained and regularity and smoothing properties of the solutions are studied. In addition, the existence of a global and an exponential attractors for these equations in a natural phase space is verified.

Inertial manifolds via spatial averaging revisited

The paper gives a comprehensive study of inertial manifolds for semilinear parabolic equations and their smoothness using the spatial averaging method suggested by G. Sell and J. Mallet-Paret. We present a universal approach which covers the most part of known results obtained via this method as well as gives a number of new ones. Among our applications are reaction-diffusion equations, various types of generalized Cahn-Hilliard equations, including fractional and 6th order Cahn-Hilliard equations and several classes of modified Navier-Stokes equations including the Leray-$α$ regularization, hyperviscous regularization and their combinations. All of the results are obtained in 3D case with periodic boundary conditions.

Infinite energy solutions for weakly damped quintic wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$

The paper gives a comprehensive study of infinite-energy solutions and their long-time behavior for semi-linear weakly damped wave equations in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with quintic nonlinearities. This study includes global well-posedness of the so-called Shatah-Struwe solutions, their dissipativity, the existence of a locally compact global attractors (in the uniformly local phase spaces) and their extra regularity.

Reaction-diffusion systems with supercritical nonlinearities revisited

We give a comprehensive study of the analytic properties and long-time behavior of solutions of a reaction-diffusion system in a bounded domain in the case where the nonlinearity satisfies the standard monotonicity assumption. We pay the main attention to the supercritical case, where the nonlinearity is not subordinated to the linear part of the equation trying to put as small as possible amount of extra restrictions on this nonlinearity. The properties of such systems in the supercritical case may be very different in comparison with the standard case of subordinated nonlinearities. We examine the global existence and uniqueness of weak and strong solutions, various types of smoothing properties, asymptotic compactness and the existence of global and exponential attractors.

Large dispersion, averaging and attractors: three 1D paradigms

The effect of rapid oscillations, related to large dispersion terms, on the dynamics of dissipative evolution equations is studied for the model examples of the 1D complex Ginzburg-Landau and the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations. Three different scenarios of this effect are demonstrated. According to the first scenario, the dissipation mechanism is not affected and the diameter of the global attractor remains uniformly bounded with respect to the very large dispersion coefficient. However, the limit equation, as the dispersion parameter tends to infinity, becomes a gradient system. Therefore, adding the large dispersion term actually suppresses the non-trivial dynamics. According to the second scenario, neither the dissipation mechanism, nor the dynamics are essentially affected by the large dispersion and the limit dynamics remains complicated (chaotic). Finally, it is demonstrated in the third scenario that the dissipation mechanism is completely destroyed by the large dispersion, and that the diameter of the global attractor grows together with the growth of the dispersion parameter.

Finite Dimensionality of the attractor for the hyperbolic Cahn-Hilliard-Oono Equation in R^3

In this paper, we continue the study of the hyperbolic relaxation of the Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation with the sub-quintic non-linearity in the whole space $\R^3$ started in our previous paper and verify that under the natural assumptions on the non-linearity and the external force, the fractal dimension of the associated global attractor in the natural energy space is finite.

Infinite energy solutions for Dissipative Euler equations in R^2

We study the Euler equations with the so-called Ekman damping in the whole 2D space. The global well-posedness and dissipativity for the weak infinite energy solutions of this problem in the uniformly local spaces is verified based on the further development of the weighted energy theory for the Navier-Stokes and Euler type problems. In addition, the existence of weak locally compact global attractor is proved and some extra compactness of this attractor is obtained.

On a singular heat equation with dynamic boundary conditions

In this paper we analyze a nonlinear parabolic equation characterized by a singular diffusion term describing very fast diffusion effects. The equation is settled in a smooth bounded three-dimensional domain and complemented with a general boundary condition of dynamic type. This type of condition prescribes some kind of mass conservation; hence extinction effects are not expected for solutions that emanate from strictly positive initial data. Our main results regard existence of weak solutions, instantaneous regularization properties, long-time behavior, and, under special conditions, uniqueness.

Preventing blow up by convective terms in dissipative PDEs

We study the impact of the convective terms on the global solvability or finite time blow up of solutions of dissipative PDEs. We consider the model examples of 1D Burger's type equations, convective Cahn-Hilliard equation, generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and KdV type equations, we establish the following common scenario: adding sufficiently strong (in comparison with the destabilizing nonlinearity) convective terms to equation prevents the solutions from blowing up in finite time and makes the considered system globally well-posed and dissipative and for weak enough convective terms the finite time blow up may occur similarly to the case when the equation does not involve convective term. This kind of result has been previously known for the case of Burger's type equations and has been strongly based on maximum principle. In contrast to this, our results are based on the weighted energy estimates which do not require the maximum principle for the considered problem.

A note on a strongly damped wave equation with fast growing nonlinearities

A strongly damped wave equation including the displacement depending nonlinear damping term and nonlinear interaction function is considered. The main aim of the note is to show that under the standard dissipativity restrictions on the nonlinearities involved the initial boundary value problem for the considered equation is globally well-posed in the class of sufficiently regular solutions and the semigroup generated by the problem possesses a global attractor in the corresponding phase space. These results are obtained for the nonlinearities of an arbitrary polynomial growth and without the assumption that the considered problem has a global Lyapunov function.

Global well-posedness and attractors for the hyperbolic Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation in the whole space

We prove the global well-posedness of the so-called hyperbolic relaxation of the Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation in the whole space R^3 with the non-linearity of the sub-quintic growth rate. Moreover, the dissipativity and the existence of a smooth global attractor in the naturally defined energy space is also verified. The result is crucially based on the Strichartz estimates for the linear Scroedinger equation in R^3.

Sharp interpolation inequalities for discrete operators and applications

We consider interpolation inequalities for imbeddings of the $l^2$-sequence spaces over $d$-dimensional lattices into the $l^\infty_0$ spaces written as interpolation inequality between the $l^2$-norm of a sequence and its difference. A general method is developed for finding sharp constants, extremal elements and correction terms in this type of inequalities. Applications to Carlson's inequalities and spectral theory of discrete operators are given.

Strong Uniform Attractors for Non-Autonomous Dissipative PDEs with non translation-compact external forces

We give a comprehensive study of strong uniform attractors of non-autonomous dissipative systems for the case where the external forces are not translation compact. We introduce several new classes of external forces which are not translation compact, but nevertheless allow to verify the attraction in a strong topology of the phase space and discuss in a more detailed way the class of so-called normal external forces introduced before. We also develop a unified approach to verify the asymptotic compactness for such systems based on the energy method and apply it to a number of equations of mathematical physics including the Navier-Stokes equations, damped wave equations and reaction-diffusing equations in unbounded domains.

Attractors for damped quintic wave equations in bounded domains

The dissipative wave equation with a critical quintic nonlinearity in smooth bounded three dimensional domain is considered. Based on the recent extension of the Strichartz estimates to the case of bounded domains, the existence of a compact global attractor for the solution semigroup of this equation is established. Moreover, the smoothness of the obtained attractor is also shown.

Inertial manifolds and finite-dimensional reduction for dissipative PDEs

These notes are devoted to the problem of finite-dimensional reduction for parabolic PDEs. We give a detailed exposition of the classical theory of inertial manifolds as well as various attempts to generalize it based on the so-called Mané projection theorems. The recent counterexamples which show that the underlying dynamics may be in a sense infinite-dimensional if the spectral gap condition is violated as well as the discussion on the most important open problems are also included.

Infinite-energy solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations in a strip revisited

The paper deals with the Navier-Stokes equations in a strip in the class of spatially non-decaing (infinite-energy) solutions belonging to the properly chosen uniformly local Sobolev spaces. The global well-posedness and dissipativity of the Navier-Stokes equations in a strip in such spaces has been first established in [S. Zelik, "Spatially nondecaying solutions of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation in a strip". Glasg. Math. J., 49 (2007), no. 3, 525--588]. However, the proof given there contains rather essential error and the aim of the present paper is to correct this error and to show that the main results of that paper remain true.

preprint2013arXiv

Smooth attractors for the quintic wave equations with fractional damping

Dissipative wave equations with critical quintic nonlinearity and damping term involving the fractional Laplacian are considered. The additional regularity of energy solutions is established by constructing the new Lyapunov-type functional and based on this, the global well-posedness and dissipativity of the energy solutions as well as the existence of a smooth global and exponential attractors of finite Hausdorff and fractal dimension is verified.

preprint2012arXiv

Exponential attractors for random dynamical systems and applications

The paper is devoted to constructing a random exponential attractor for some classes of stochastic PDE's. We first prove the existence of an exponential attractor for abstract random dynamical systems and study its dependence on a parameter and then apply these results to a nonlinear reaction-diffusion system with a random perturbation. We show, in particular, that the attractors can be constructed in such a way that the symmetric distance between the attractors for stochastic and deterministic problems goes to zero with the amplitude of the random perturbation.

Global well-posedness in uniformly local spaces for the Cahn-Hilliard equation in R^3

We study the infinite-energy solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard equation in the whole 3D space in uniformly local phase spaces. In particular, we establish the global existence of solutions for the case of regular potentials of arbitrary polynomial growth and for the case of sufficiently strong singular potentials. For these cases, the uniqueness and further regularity of the obtained solutions are proved as well. We discuss also the analogous problems for the case of the so-called Cahn-Hilliard-Oono equation where, in addition, the dissipativity of the associated solution semigroup is established.

Infinite Energy Solutions for Damped Navier-Stokes Equations in R2

We study the so-called damped Navier-Stokes equations in the whole 2D space. The global well-posedness, dissipativity and further regularity of weak solutions of this problem in the uniformly-local spaces are verified based on the further development of the weighted energy theory for the Navier-Stokes type problems. Note that any divergent free vector field $u_0\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^2)$ is allowed and no assumptions on the spatial decay of solutions as $|x|\to\infty$ are posed. In addition, applying the developed theory to the case of the classical Navier-Stokes problem in R2, we show that the properly defined weak solution can grow at most polynomially (as a quintic polynomial) as time goes to infinity.

Counterexamples to the regularity of Mane projections and global attractors

We study the global attractors of abstract semilinear parabolic equations and their projections to finite-dimensional planes. It is well-known that the attractor can be embedded into the finite-dimensional inertial manifold if the so-called spectral gap condition is satisfied. We show that in the case when the spectral gap condition is violated, it is possible to construct the nonlinearity in such way that the corresponding attractor cannot be embedded into any finite-dimensional Log-Lipschitz manifold and, therefore, does not possess any Mane projections with Log-Lipschitz inverse. In addition, we give an example of finitely smooth nonlinearity such that the attractor has finite Hausdorff but infinite fractal dimension.

Global attractor and stabilization for a coupled PDE-ODE system

We study the asymptotic behavior of solutions of one coupled PDE-ODE system arising in mathematical biology as a model for the development of a forest ecosystem. In the case where the ODE-component of the system is monotone, we establish the existence of a smooth global attractor of finite Hausdorff and fractal dimension. The case of the non-monotone ODE-component is much more complicated. In particular, the set of equilibria becomes non-compact here and contains a huge number of essentially discontinuous solutions. Nevertheless, we prove the stabilization of any trajectory to a single equilibrium if the coupling constant is small enough.

Smooth Attractors for the Brinkman-Forchheimer equations with fast growing nonlinearities

We prove the existence of regular dissipative solutions and global attractors for the 3D Brinkmann-Forchheimer equations with the nonlinearity of an arbitrary polynomial growth rate. In order to obtain this result, we prove the maximal regularity estimate for the corresponding semi-linear stationary Stokes problem using some modification of the nonlinear localization technique. The applications of our results to the Brinkmann-Forchheimer equation with the Navier-Stokes inertial term are also considered.

Asymptotic expansions and extremals for the critical Sobolev and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on a torus

We give a comprehensive study of interpolation inequalities for periodic functions with zero mean, including the existence of and the asymptotic expansions for the extremals, best constants, various remainder terms, etc. Most attention is paid to the critical (logarithmic) Sobolev inequality in the two-dimensional case, although a number of results concerning the best constants in the algebraic case and different space dimensions are also obtained.

preprint2010arXiv

Existence of solutions and separation from singularities for a class of fourth order degenerate parabolic equations

A nonlinear parabolic equation of the fourth order is analyzed. The equation is characterized by a mobility coefficient that degenerates at 0. Existence of at least one weak solution is proved by using a regularization procedure and deducing suitable a-priori estimates. If a viscosity term is added and additional conditions on the nonlinear terms are assumed, then it is proved that any weak solution becomes instantaneously strictly positive. This in particular implies uniqueness for strictly positive times and further time-regularization properties. The long-time behavior of the problem is also investigated and the existence of trajectory attractors and, under more restrictive conditions, of strong global attractors is shown.

preprint2009arXiv

Finite-dimensional global and exponential attractors for the reaction-diffusion problem with an obstacle potential

A reaction-diffusion problem with an obstacle potential is considered in a bounded domain of $\R^N$. Under the assumption that the obstacle $\K$ is a closed convex and bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary or it is a closed $n$-dimensional simplex, we prove that the long-time behavior of the solution semigroup associated with this problem can be described in terms of an exponential attractor. In particular, the latter means that the fractal dimension of the associated global attractor is also finite.

preprint2009arXiv

Trajectory and smooth attractors for Cahn-Hilliard equations with inertial term

The paper is devoted to a modification of the classical Cahn-Hilliard equation proposed by some physicists. This modification is obtained by adding the second time derivative of the order parameter multiplied by an inertial coefficient which is usually small in comparison to the other physical constants. The main feature of this equation is the fact that even a globally bounded nonlinearity is "supercritical" in the case of two and three space dimensions. Thus the standard methods used for studying semilinear hyperbolic equations are not very effective in the present case. Nevertheless, we have recently proven the global existence and dissipativity of strong solutions in the 2D case (with a cubic controlled growth nonlinearity) and for the 3D case with small inertial coefficient and arbitrary growth rate of the nonlinearity. The present contribution studies the long-time behavior of rather weak (energy) solutions of that equation and it is a natural complement of the results of our previous papers. Namely, we prove here that the attractors for energy and strong solutions coincide for both the cases mentioned above. Thus, the energy solutions are asymptotically smooth. In addition, we show that the non-smooth part of any energy solution decays exponentially in time and deduce that the (smooth) exponential attractor for the strong solutions constructed previously is simultaneously the exponential attractor for the energy solutions as well.
