Effects of geomagnetic field perturbations on the power supply of transoceanic fiber optic cables

There is a growing concern that a big coronal mass ejection event will induce perturbations on the power supply of fiber optic transoceanic cables that may produce a global internet blackout. In this paper we give the expression of the voltage variations that a transient change of the geomagnetic field induces on the voltage of the power supply of a transoceanic fiber optic cable. We show that the transient voltage change is proportional to the magnitude of the magnetic field deviations and not to its time derivative as a direct application of Faraday's law would imply, and this suggests design criteria to protect transoceanic fiber optic systems against big geomagnetic storm events. The presented analysis also enables the classification of existing systems into some that are less sensitive to the weakening of the geomagnetic field occurring during strong geomagnetic storms and others that are more prone to experience an outage when a weakening of the geomagnetic field occurs.

A necessary and sufficient condition for minimum phase and implications for phase retrieval

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a function $E(t)$ being of minimum phase, and hence for its phase being univocally determined by its intensity $|E(t)|^2$. This condition is based on the knowledge of $E(t)$ alone and not of its analytic continuation in the complex plane, thus greatly simplifying its practical applicability. We apply these results to find the class of all band-limited signals that correspond to distinct receiver states when the detector is sensitive to the field intensity only and insensitive to the field phase, and discuss the performance of a recently proposed transmission scheme able to linearly detect all distinguishable states.

Efficient and accurate modeling of multi-wavelength propagation in SOAs: a generalized coupled-mode approach

We present a model for multi-wavelength mixing in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) based on coupled-mode equations. The proposed model applies to all kinds of SOA structures, takes into account the longitudinal dependence of carrier density caused by saturation, it accommodates an arbitrary functional dependencies of the material gain and carrier recombination rate on the local value of carrier density, and is computationally more efficient by orders of magnitude as compared with the standard full model based on space-time equations. We apply the coupled-mode equations model to a recently demonstrated phase-sensitive amplifier based on an integrated SOA and prove its results to be consistent with the experimental data. The accuracy of the proposed model is certified by means of a meticulous comparison with the results obtained by integrating the space-time equations.

Pulse collision picture of inter-channel nonlinear interference noise in fiber-optic communications

We model the build-up of inter-channel nonlinear interference noise (NLIN) in wavelength division multiplexed systems by considering the pulse collision dynamics in the time domain. The fundamental interactions can be classified as two-pulse, three-pulse, or four-pulse collisions and they can be either complete, or incomplete. Each type of collision is shown to have its unique signature and the overall nature of NLIN is determined by the relative importance of the various classes of pulse collisions in a given WDM system. The pulse-collision picture provides qualitative and quantitative insight into the character of NLIN, offering a simple and intuitive explanation to all of the reported and previously unexplained phenomena. In particular, we show that the most important contributions to NLIN follow from two-pulse and four-pulse collisions. While the contribution of two-pulse collisions is in the form of phase-noise and polarization-state-rotation with strong dependence on modulation format, four-pulse collisions generate complex circular noise whose variance is independent of modulation format. In addition, two-pulse collisions are strongest when the collision is complete, whereas four-pulse collisions are strongest when the collision is incomplete. We show that two-pulse collisions dominate the formation of NLIN in short links with lumped amplification, or in links with distributed amplification extending over arbitrary length. In long links using lumped amplification the relative significance of four-pulse collisions increases, emphasizing the circularity of the NLIN while reducing its dependence on modulation format.

Accumulation of nonlinear interference noise in fiber-optic systems

Through a series of extensive system simulations we show that all of the previously not understood discrepancies between the Gaussian noise (GN) model and simulations can be attributed to the omission of an important, recently reported, fourth-order noise (FON) term, that accounts for the statistical dependencies within the spectrum of the interfering channel. We examine the importance of the FON term as well as the dependence of NLIN on modulation format with respect to link-length and number of spans. A computationally efficient method for evaluating the FON contribution, as well as the overall NLIN power is provided.

Assessing the effects of mode-dependent loss in space-division multiplexed systems

Mode-dependent loss (MDL) is known to be a major issue in space-division multiplexed (SMD) systems. Its effect on performance is complex as it affects both the data carrying signal and the accumulated amplification noise. In this paper we propose a procedure for characterizing the MDL of SDM systems by means of standard measurements that are routinely performed on SDM setups. The figure of merit that we present for quantifying MDL incorporates the effect on the transmitted signal and the noise and is directly related to the spectral efficiency reduction.

Classical capacity of the noisy bosonic channel and the bosonic minimum output entropy conjecture

We consider a line with noise in the simplest case. Loss does not add noise. Amplification via phase insensitive amplifiers do add noise. A lower bound of this capacity is the quantum analog to the Shannon capacity of a linear channel with additive white Gaussian noise, namely the difference of the Von Neumann entropy of the signal plus noise at the output of the line and the entropy of the noise alone. We show that this expression is indeed the capacity for the case of an amplifier with infinitesimal gain $G = 1+ε$, and for a cascade of an amplifier with arbitrary gain and a large loss, such that the overall gain of the cascade is infinitesimal.

Properties of nonlinear noise in long, dispersion-uncompensated fiber links

We study the properties of nonlinear interference noise (NLIN) in fiber-optic communications systems with large accumulated dispersion. Our focus is on settling the discrepancy between the results of the Gaussian noise (GN) model (according to which NLIN is additive Gaussian) and a recently published time-domain analysis, which attributes drastically different properties to the NLIN. Upon reviewing the two approaches we identify several unjustified assumptions that are key in the derivation of the GN model, and that are responsible for the discrepancy. We derive the true NLIN power and verify that the NLIN is not additive Gaussian, but rather it depends strongly on the data transmitted in the channel of interest. In addition we validate the time-domain model numerically and demonstrate the strong dependence of the NLIN on the interfering channels' modulation format.

Nonlinear propagation in multi-mode fibers in the strong coupling regime

In spite of the massive interest that the generalized Manakov equation has attracted in the past two decades, no physical system which is quantitatively described by this equation has been reported so far. In this paper we show that propagation in a group of degenerate modes of a multi-mode optical fiber satisfies this equation in the presence of random mode coupling. Consequently, this is the first reported physical system that admits true multi-component soliton solutions. The reported formalism constitutes the starting point for future studies of nonlinear effects in multi-mode fiber transmission.

Soliton trapping in multimode fibers with random mode coupling

We derive the fundamental equations describing nonlinear propagation in multi-mode fibers in the presence of random mode coupling within quasi-degenerate groups of modes. Our result generalizes the Manakov equation describing mode coupling between polarizations in single-mode fibers. Nonlinear compensation of the modal dispersion is predicted and tested via computer simulations.
