Conformal S-dualities from O-planes

We study 4d SCFTs obtained by orientifold projections on necklace quivers with fractional branes. The models obtained by this procedure are $\mathcal{N}=1$ linear quivers with unitary, symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups, bifundamental and tensorial matter. Remarkably, models that are not dual in the unoriented case can have the same central charges and superconformal index after the projection. The reason for this behavior rests upon the ubiquitous presence of adjoint fields with R-charge one. We claim that the presence of such fields is at the origin of the notion of inherited S-duality on the models' conformal manifold.

$τ_{RR}$ minimization in presence of hypermultiplets

We compute $τ_{RR}$ minimization in gauged supergravity for M-theory and String Theory truncations with both massless and massive vector multiplets. We explicitly compute, as anticipated in \cite{Amariti:2015ybz}, that massive vector fields at the vacuum require the introduction of a constraint through a Lagrange multiplier. We illustrate this explicitly in two examples, namely the $U(1)^2$-invariant truncation dual to the mABJM model and the ISO(7) truncation in massive IIA, the latter being a theory with both electric and magnetic gauging. We revisit the vacuum constraints at $AdS_4$ and show how the supergravity analysis matches the results of the field theory dual computation.

3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $SU(N_c)\times U(1)$ Chern-Simons gauge theories

We systematically study 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ dualities for $U(N_c)$ gauge theories with different CS levels for the abelian and the non-abelian factors. We derive such dualities by a gauging/ungauging procedure on other known dualities and by adding an opportune CS contact term for the baryonic symmetry. This allows us to follow the various steps on the three sphere partition function, obtaining exact identities among the new dual phases proposed here. We apply the procedure to various cases, namely SQCD without and with adjoint, chiral dualities and some sporadic cases arising from the real mass flow of models with an $E_7 \times U(1)$ enhancement of the global symmetry.

On the Nelson-Seiberg theorem: generalizations and counter-examples

In this note we elaborate on a recent counter-example to the Nelson-Seiberg theorem and to its generalizations. We provide sufficient conditions for the existence of such counter-examples, finding new ones. We claim that these counter-examples are connected with the presence of pairs of fields with opposite R-charge getting a VEV. Furthermore we comment on the "non-genericity" of our models, showing that none of them violates the original Nelson-Seiberg theorem

Lens space index and global properties for 4d N = 2 models

The additional data necessary to univocally fix the gauge group for a given algebra are represented by the same charge lattices of mutually local Wilson and 't Hooft lines for both 4d $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and $\mathcal{N}=2$ elliptic models. Motivated by this equivalence in this paper we study the Lens space index of these $\mathcal{N}=2$ elliptic models. The index is indeed sensitive to the global properties and in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ case it is expected to coincide among S-dual models with different global properties, while it gives different results for models that lie in other S-duality orbits. Here by an explicit calculation we show that the same results hold for the $\mathcal{N}=2$ elliptic models as well.

New 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFT's with $N^{3/2}$ scaling

We construct several novel examples of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ models whose free energy scales as $N^{3/2}$ at large $N$. This is the first step towards the identification of field theories with an M-theory dual. Furthermore, we match the volumes extracted from the free energy with the ones computed from the Hilbert series. We perform a similar analysis for the 4d parents of the 3d models, matching the volume extracted from the $a$ conformal anomaly to that obtained from the Hilbert series. For some of the 4d models, we show the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein metric on the internal space of the candidate type IIB gravity dual.

SUSY Breaking in Monopole Quivers

We claim that 3d monopole quivers, theories with product gauge groups interacting through Affleck-Harvey-Witten superpotentials, are a natural setup for the study of spontaneous breaking 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. We give evidence of this statement by studying various examples of increasing complexity, considering quivers that are mirror dual to Wess-Zumino models. These Wess-Zumino models, in opportune regimes of parameters, break supersymmetry in perturbatively controllable (meta)stable vacua.

Line operators from M-branes on compact Riemann surfaces

In this paper, we determine the charge lattice of mutually local Wilson and 't Hooft line operators for class S theories living on M5-branes wrapped on compact Riemann surfaces. The main ingredients of our analysis are the fundamental group of the N-cover of the Riemann surface, and a quantum constraint on the six-dimensional theory. This latter plays a central role in excluding some of the possible lattices and imposing consistency conditions on the charges. This construction gives a geometric explanation for the mutual locality among the lines, fixing their charge lattice and the structure of the four-dimensional gauge group.

4D/3D reduction of dualities: mirrors on the circle

We engineer a brane picture for the reduction of Seiberg dualities from 4D to 3D, valid also in the presence of orientifold planes. We obtain effective 3D dualities on the circle by T-duality, geometrizing the non-perturbative superpotential which is an affine Toda potential. When reducing to pure 3D, we define a double-scaling limit which creates a confining sector, giving a unified mechanism for the brane reduction of dualities.

A journey to 3d: exact relations for adjoint SQCD from dimensional reduction

In this note we elaborate on the reduction of four dimensional Seiberg duality with adjoint matter to three dimensions. We use the exact formulation of the superconformal index and of the partition function as instruments to test this reduction. We translate the identity between indices of the dual 4d theories to 3d. This produces various new identities between partition functions of 3d dual phases.

From S-confinement to 3D Chiral Theories: Dressing the Monopoles

Monopole operators play a central role in 3 dimensional supersymmetric dualities: a careful understanding of their spectrum is necessary to match chiral operators on either sides of a conjectured duality. In Chern-Simons theories ($k\neq0$), monopole operators acquire an electric charge, thus they need to be "dressed" by chiral matter superfields to be made gauge-invariant. Here we present strong evidence that "dressed" monopoles appear in $SU(N)$ chiral theories even for $k=0$ because of mixed CS terms generated along certain Coulomb branch directions. Our analysis is based on the dimensional reduction of 4-dimensional dualities which, for the simplest s-confining case, allows us to easily identify the spectrum of the electric chiral operators.

The braneology of 3D dualities

In this paper we study the reduction of four-dimensional Seiberg duality to three dimensions from a brane perspective. We reproduce the non-perturbative dynamics of the three-dimensional field theory via a T-duality at finite radius and the action of Euclidean D-strings. In this way we also overcome certain issues regarding the brane description of Aharony duality. Moreover we apply our strategy to more general dualities, such as toric duality for M2-branes and dualities with adjoint matter fields.

The M-theory origin of global properties of gauge theories

We show that global properties of gauge groups can be understood as geometric properties in M-theory. Different wrappings of a system of N M5-branes on a torus reduce to four-dimensional theories with $A_{N-1}$ gauge algebra and different unitary groups. The classical properties of the wrappings determine the global properties of the gauge theories without the need to impose any quantum conditions. We count the inequivalent wrappings as they fall into orbits of the modular group of the torus, which correspond to the S-duality orbits of the gauge theories.

Chern-Simons and RG Flows: Contact with Dualities

Contact terms in two point functions of global symmetry currents have recently been proposed as a check of Seiberg-like duality in three dimensional supersymmetric field theories. In this paper we compute the contact terms for various N=2 dual pairs in flat space. We show that the results of this computation agree with the ones obtained from localization. We study dual pairs of gauge theories with (anti-)fundamental matter fields, and some special examples of dual pairs with adjoint and antisymmetric matter fields. We also propose a duality between unitary and symplectic gauge theories.

Spin(7) duality for N=1 CS-matter theories

In this paper we propose a duality for non-holomorphic N=1 CS-matter theories living on M2 branes probing Spin(7) cones. We call this duality Spin(7) duality. Two theories are named Spin(7) dual if they have the same moduli space: a real Spin(7) cone with base a weak G_2 manifold, and they are hence holographic dual to the same AdS_4 x G_2 M theory solution. We provide a systematic way to generate these dualities, derived by combining toric duality for N=2 CS-matter theories and generalized non-holomorphic orientifold projections to N=1. Brane construction, AdS/CFT correspondence, and the computation of the moduli space support our proposal at the classical level and provide some arguments at the quantum strong coupling regime. The relation with Seiberg-like duality is also analyzed.

A Zig-Zag Index

We study the large N superconformal index of quiver gauge theories describing the worldvolume of D3 branes probing toric Calabi Yau singularities. The index has been previously noticed to factorize over the set of the extremal BPS mesonic operators of the gauge theory. We review this factorization and reformulate it in terms of zig-zag paths in the dimer model associated to the quiver. By using this reformulation, we argue that the factorization is valid not only for the exact R charge but for every set of R_{trial} respecting the marginality constraints. Moreover, we show the factorization of the index also in theories with orbifold singularities, previously not investigated. We conclude by providing an expression for the index in terms of the toric data of the dual geometry.

Scattering Amplitudes and Toric Geometry

In this paper we provide a first attempt towards a toric geometric interpretation of scattering amplitudes. In recent investigations it has indeed been proposed that the all-loop integrand of planar N=4 SYM can be represented in terms of well defined finite objects called on-shell diagrams drawn on disks. Furthermore it has been shown that the physical information of on-shell diagrams is encoded in the geometry of auxiliary algebraic varieties called the totally non negative Grassmannians. In this new formulation the infinite dimensional symmetry of the theory is manifest and many results, that are quite tricky to obtain in terms of the standard Lagrangian formulation of the theory, are instead manifest. In this paper, elaborating on previous results, we provide another picture of the scattering amplitudes in terms of toric geometry. In particular we describe in detail the toric varieties associated to an on-shell diagram, how the singularities of the amplitudes are encoded in some subspaces of the toric variety, and how this picture maps onto the Grassmannian description. Eventually we discuss the action of cluster transformations on the toric varieties. The hope is to provide an alternative description of the scattering amplitudes that could contribute in the developing of this very interesting field of research.

Spontaneous R-symmetry breaking from the renormalization group flow

We propose a mechanism of R-symmetry breaking in four-dimensional DSB models based on the RG properties of the coupling constants. By constraining the UV sector, we generate new hierarchies amongst the couplings that allow a spontaneously broken R-symmetry in models with pure chiral fields of R-charges R = 0 and R = 2 only. The result is obtained by a combination of one- and two-loop effects, both at the origin of field space and in the region dominated by leading log potentials.

(Delta a) curiosities in some 4d susy RG flows

We explore some curiosities in 4d susy RG flows. One issue is that the compelling candidate a-function, from a-maximization with Lagrange multipliers, has a `strange branch," with reversed RG flow properties, monotonically increasing instead of decreasing. The branch flip to the strange branch occurs where a double-trace deformation Delta W=O ^2 passes through marginality, reminiscent of the condition for the chiral symmetry breaking, out of the conformal window transition in non-susy gauge theories. The second issue arises from Higgsing vevs for IR-free fields, which sometimes superficially violate the a-theorem. The resolution is that some vevs trigger marginal or irrelevant interactions, leading to Delta a=0 and decoupled dilaton on a subspace of the moduli space of vacua. This is contrary to classical intuition about Higgsing. This phenomenon often (but not always) correlates with negative R-charge for the Higgsing chiral operator.

BPS states and their reductions

We develop a method to identify the BPS states in the Hilbert space of a supersymmetric field theory on a generic curved space which preserves at least two real supercharges. We also propose a one-to-one map between BPS states in d-dimensional field theories and states that contribute to the supersymmetric partition function of a corresponding (d-1)-dimensional field theory. As an application we obtain the superconformal index on rounded and squashed three spheres, and we show a natural reduction of the respective indices to the three-dimensional exact partition functions. We discuss the validity of the correspondence both at the perturbative and at the non-perturbative level and exploit the idea to uplift the computation of the exact supersymmetric partition function on a general manifold to a higher dimensional index.

F-maximization along the RG flows: a proposal

We propose an extension of the F-maximization principle to take into account the effects of non-superconformality. Guided by a four-dimensional analog, we formulate a modification of the free energy via the Lagrange multiplier technique. We conjecture that the Lagrange multiplier plays the same role as the coupling constant, at least at weak coupling. We check our proposal in many examples with unitary, symplectic and orthogonal gauge groups.

Free Energy vs Sasaki-Einstein Volume for Infinite Families of M2-Brane Theories

We investigate infinite families of 3d N=2 superconformal Chern-Simons quivers with an arbitrarily large number of gauge groups arising on M2-branes over toric CY_4's. These theories have the same matter content and superpotential of those on D3-branes probing cones over L^{a,b,a} Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. For all these infinite families, we explicitly show the correspondence between the free energy F on S^3 and the volume of the 7-dimensional base of the associated CY_4, even before extremization. Our results add to those existing in the literature, providing further support for the correspondence. We develop a lifting algorithm, based on the Type IIB realization of these theories, that takes from CY_3's to CY_4's and we use it to efficiently generate the models studied in the paper. We also introduce a procedure, based on the mapping between extremal points in the toric diagram (GLSM fields) and chiral fields in the quiver, which systematically translates symmetries of the toric diagram into constraints of the trial R-charges of the quiver, beyond those arising from marginality of the superpotential. This method can be exploited for reducing the dimension of the space of trial R-charges over which the free energy is maximized. Finally, we show that in all the infinite families we consider F^2 can be expressed, even off-shell, as a quartic function in R-charges associated to certain 5-cycles. This suggests that a quartic formula on R-charges, analogous to a similar cubic function for the central charge a in 4d, exists for all toric toric CY_4's and we present some ideas regarding its general form.

Refined Checks and Exact Dualities in Three Dimensions

We discuss and provide nontrivial evidence for a large class of dualities in three-dimensional field theories with different gauge groups. We match the full partition functions of the dual phases for any value of the couplings to underpin our proposals. We focus on two classes of models. The first class, motivated by the AdS/CFT conjecture, consists of necklace U(N) quiver gauge theories with non chiral matter fields. We also consider orientifold projections and establish dualities among necklace quivers with alternating orthogonal and symplectic groups. The second class consists of theories with tensor matter fields with free theory duals. In most of these cases the R-symmetry mixes with IR accidental symmetries and we develop the prescription to include their contribution into the partition function and the extremization problem accordingly.

Negative Refraction and Superconductivity

We discuss exotic properties of charged hydrodynamical systems, in the broken superconducting phase, probed by electromagnetic waves. Motivated by general arguments from hydrodynamics, we observe that negative refraction, namely the propagation in opposite directions of the phase velocities and of the energy flux, is expected for low enough frequencies. We corroborate this general idea by analyzing a holographic superconductor in the AdS/CFT correspondence, where the response functions can be explicitly computed. We study the dual gravitational theory both in the probe and in the backreacted case. We find that, while in the first case the refractive index is positive at every frequency, in the second case there is negative refraction at low enough frequencies. This is in agreement with hydrodynamic considerations.

Negative Refractive Index in Hydrodynamical Systems

We discuss the presence of exotic electromagnetic phenomena in systems with finite charge density which are described by hydrodynamics. We show that such systems generically have negative refractive index for low frequency electromagnetic waves, i.e. the energy flux and the phase velocity of the wave propagate in opposite directions. We comment on possible phenomenological applications, focusing on the Quark Gluon Plasma.

The Large N Limit of Toric Chern-Simons Matter Theories and Their Duals

We compute the large N limit of the localized three dimensional free energy of various field theories with known proposed AdS duals. We show that vector-like theories agree with the expected supergravity results, and with the conjectured F-theorem. We also check that the large N free energy is preserved by the three dimensional Seiberg duality for general classes of vector like theories. Then we analyze the behavior of the free energy of chiral-like theories by applying a new proposal. The proposal is based on the restoration of a discrete symmetry on the free energy before the extremization. We apply this procedure at strong coupling in some examples and we discuss the results. We conclude the paper by proposing an alternative geometrical expression for the free energy.

Z Extremization in Chiral-Like Chern Simons Theories

We study the localized free energy on S^3 of three-dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons matter theories at weak coupling. We compute the two loop R charge in three different ways, namely by the standard perturbative approach, by extremizing the localized partition function at finite N and by applying the standard saddle point approximation for large N. We show that the latter approach does not reproduce the expected result when chiral theories are considered. We circumvent these problems by restoring a reflection symmetry on the eigenvalues in the free energy. Thanks to this symmetrization we find that the three methods employed agree. In particular we match the computation for a model whose four dimensional parent is the quiver gauge theory describing D3 branes probing the Hirzebruch surface. We conclude by commenting on the application of our results and to the strong coupling regime.

Z-extremization and F-theorem in Chern-Simons matter theories

The three dimensional exact R symmetry of N=2 SCFTs extremizes the partition function localized on a three sphere. Here we verify this statement at weak coupling. We give a detailed analysis for two classes of models. The first one is an SU(N)_k gauge theory at large k with both fundamental and adjoint matter fields, while the second is a flavored version of the ABJ theory, where the CS levels are large but they do not necessarily sum up to zero. We study in both cases superpotential deformations and compute the R charges at different fixed points. When these fixed points are connected by an RG flow we explicitly verify that the free energy decreases at the endpoints of the flow between the fixed points, corroborating the conjecture of an F-theorem in three dimensions.

3D Seiberg-like Dualities and M2 Branes

We investigate features of duality in three dimensional N=2 Chern-Simons matter theories conjectured to describe M2 branes at toric Calabi Yau four-fold singularities. For 3D theories with non-chiral 4D parents we propone a Seiberg-like duality which turns out to be a toric duality. For theories with chiral 4D parents we discuss the conditions under which that Seiberg-like duality leads to toric duality. We comment on such duality in 3D theories without 4D parents.

Pseudomoduli Dark Matter and Quiver Gauge Theories

We investigate supersymmetric models for dark matter which is represented by pseudomoduli in weakly coupled hidden sectors. We propose a scheme to add a dark matter sector to quiver gauge theories with metastable supersymmetry breaking. We discuss the embedding of such scheme in string theory and we describe the dark matter sector in terms of D7 flavour branes. We explore the phenomenology in various regions of the parameters.
