An invitation to Alexandrov geometry: CAT(0) spaces

Our goal is to show the beauty and power of Alexandrov geometry by reaching interesting applications and theorems with a minimum of preparation. The topics include 1. Reshetnyak's gluing theorem, 2. Estimates on the number of collisions in billiards, 3. Reshetnyak's majorization theorem, 4. Hadamard--Cartan globalization theorem, 5. Polyhedral spaces, 6. Construction of exotic aspherical manifolds, 7. The geometry of two-convex sets in Euclidean space, 8. Barycenters and dimension theory.

Short retractions of CAT(1) spaces

We construct short retractions of a CAT(1) space to its small convex subsets. This construction provides an alternative geometric description of an analytic tool introduced by Wilfrid Kendall. Our construction uses a tractrix flow which can be defined as a gradient flow for a family of functions of certain type. In an appendix we prove a general existence result for gradient flows of time-dependent locally Lipschitz semiconcave functions, which is of independent interest.

Asymptotical flatness and cone structure at infinity

We investigate asymptotically flat manifolds with cone structure at infinity. We show that any such manifold M has a finite number of ends. For simply connected ends we classify all possible cones at infinity, except for the 4-dimensional case where it remains open if one of the theoretically possible cones can actually arise. This result yields in particular a complete classification of asymptotically flat manifolds with nonnegative curvature: The universal covering of an asymptotically flat manifold with nonnegative sectional curvature is isometric to a product of Euclidean space and an asymptotically flat surface.
