Non-unique equilibrium measures and freezing phase transitions for matrix cocycles for negative $t$

We consider a one-step matrix cocycle generated by a pair of non-negative parabolic matrices and study the equilibrium measures for $t\log \|\mathcal A\|$ as $t$ runs over the reals. We show that there is a freezing first order phase transition at some parameter value $t_c$ so that for $t<t_{c}$ the equilibrium measure is non-unique and supported on the two fixed points, while for $t>t_c$, the equilibrium measure is unique, non-atomic and fully supported. The phase transition closely resembles the classical Hofbauer example. In particular, our example shows that there may be non-unique equilibrium measures for negative $t$ even if the cocycle is strongly irreducible and proximal.

A multiplicative ergodic theoretic characterization of relative equilibrium states

In this article, we continue the structural study of factor maps betweeen symbolic dynamical systems and the relative thermodynamic formalism. Here, one is studying a factor map from a shift of finite type $X$ (equipped with a potential function) to a sofic shift $Z$, equipped with a shift-invariant measure $ν$. We study relative equilibrium states, that is shift-invariant measures on $X$ that push forward under the factor map to $ν$ which maximize the relative pressure: the relative entropy plus the integral of $ϕ$. In the non-relative case (where $Z$ is the one point shift and the factor map is trivial), these measures have a very broad range of application: in hyperbolic dynamics, information theory, geometry, Teichmüller theory and elsewhere). Relative equilibrium states have also been shown to arise naturally in some contexts in geometric measure theory as a description of measures achieving the Hausdorff dimension in ambient spaces. Previous articles have identified relative versions of well-known notions of degree appearing in one-dimensional symbolic settings, and established bounds in terms of these on the number of ergodic relative equilibrium states. In this paper, we establish a new connection to multiplicative ergodic theory by relating these factor triples to a cocycle of Ruelle Perron-Frobenius operators, and showing that the principal Lyapunov exponent of this cocycle is the relative pressure; and the dimension of the leading Oseledets space is equal to the number of measures of relative maximal entropy, counted with a previously-identified concept of multiplicity.

Lyapunov exponents for transfer operator cocycles of metastable maps: a quarantine approach

This works investigates the Lyapunov-Oseledets spectrum of transfer operator cocycles associated to one-dimensional random paired tent maps depending on a parameter $ε$, quantifying the strength of the \emph{leakage} between two nearly invariant regions. We show that the system exhibits metastability, and identify the second Lyapunov exponent $λ_2^ε$ within an error of order $ε^2|\log ε|$. This approximation agrees with the naive prediction provided by a time-dependent two-state Markov chain. Furthermore, it is shown that $λ_1^ε=0$ and $λ_2^ε$ are simple, and are the only exceptional Lyapunov exponents of magnitude greater than $-\log2+ O(\log\log\tfrac 1ε/\log\tfrac 1ε)$.

Multiple phase transitions on compact symbolic systems

Let $ϕ:X\to \mathbb R$ be a continuous potential associated with a symbolic dynamical system $T:X\to X$ over a finite alphabet. Introducing a parameter $β>0$ (interpreted as the inverse temperature) we study the regularity of the pressure function $β\mapsto P_{\rm top}(βϕ)$ on an interval $[α,\infty)$ with $α>0$. We say that $ϕ$ has a phase transition at $β_0$ if the pressure function $P_{\rm top}(βϕ)$ is not differentiable at $β_0$. This is equivalent to the condition that the potential $β_0ϕ$ has two (ergodic) equilibrium states with distinct entropies. For any $α>0$ and any increasing sequence of real numbers $(β_n)$ contained in $[α,\infty)$, we construct a potential $ϕ$ whose phase transitions in $[α,\infty)$ occur precisely at the $β_n$'s. In particular, we obtain a potential which has a countably infinite set of phase transitions.

A monotone Sinai theorem

Sinai proved that a nonatomic ergodic measure-preserving system has any Bernoulli shift of no greater entropy as a factor. Given a Bernoulli shift, we show that any other Bernoulli shift that is of strictly less entropy and is stochastically dominated by the original measure can be obtained as a monotone factor; that is, the factor map has the property that for each point in the domain, its image under the factor map is coordinatewise smaller than or equal to the original point.

Ergodic universality of some topological dynamical systems

The Krieger generator theorem says that every invertible ergodic measure-preserving system with finite measure-theoretic entropy can be embedded into a full shift with strictly greater topological entropy. We extend Krieger's theorem to include toral automorphisms, and more generally, any topological dynamical system on a compact metric space that satisfies almost weak specification, asymptotic entropy expansiveness, and the small boundary property. As a corollary, one obtains a complete solution to a natural generalization of an open problem in Halmos's 1956 book regarding an isomorphism invariant that he proposed.

Rudolph's Two-Step Coding Theorem and Alpern's Lemma for R^d Actions

Rudolph showed that the orbits of any measurable, measure preserving $\mathbb R^d$ action can be measurably tiled by $2^d$ rectangles and asked if this number of tiles is optimal for $d>1$. In this paper, using a tiling of $\mathbb R^d$ by notched cubes, we show that $d+1$ tiles suffice. Furthermore, using a detailed analysis of the set of invariant measures on tilings of $\mathbb R^2$ by two rectangles, we show that while for $\mathbb R^2$ actions with completely positive entropy this bound is optimal there exist mixing $\mathbb R^2$ actions whose orbits can be tiled by 2 tiles.

Stochastic stability of Lyapunov exponents and Oseledets splittings for semi-invertible matrix cocycles

We establish (i) stability of Lyapunov exponents and (ii) convergence in probability of Oseledets spaces for semi-invertible matrix cocycles, subjected to small random perturbations. The first part extends results of Ledrappier and Young to the semi-invertible setting. The second part relies on the study of evolution of subspaces in the Grassmannian.

A semi-invertible operator Oseledets theorem

Semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorems establish the existence of an Oseledets splitting for cocycles of non-invertible linear operators (such as transfer operators) over an invertible base. Using a constructive approach, we establish a semi-invertible multiplicative ergodic theorem that for the first time can be applied to the study of transfer operators associated to the composition of piecewise expanding interval maps randomly chosen from a set of cardinality of the continuum.

Stability and approximation of random invariant densities for Lasota-Yorke map cocycles

We establish stability of random absolutely continuous invariant measures (acims) for cocycles of random Lasota-Yorke maps under a variety of perturbations. Our family of random maps need not be close to a fixed map; thus, our results can handle very general driving mechanisms. We consider (i) perturbations via convolutions, (ii) perturbations arising from finite-rank transfer operator approximation schemes and (iii) static perturbations, perturbing to a nearby cocycle of Lasota-Yorke maps. The former two results provide a rigorous framework for the numerical approximation of random acims using a Fourier-based approach and Ulam's method, respectively; we also demonstrate the efficacy of these schemes.

Weak mixing suspension flows over shifts of finite type are universal

Let S be an ergodic measure-preserving automorphism on a non-atomic probability space, and let T be the time-one map of a topologically weak mixing suspension flow over an irreducible subshift of finite type under a Holder ceiling function. We show that if the measure-theoretic entropy of S is strictly less than the topological entropy of T, then there exists an embedding from the measure-preserving automorphism into the suspension flow. As a corollary of this result and the symbolic dynamics for geodesic flows on compact surfaces of negative curvature developed by Bowen and Ratner, we also obtain an embedding from the measure-preserving automorphism into a geodesic flow, whenever the measure-theoretic entropy of S is strictly less than the topological entropy of the time-one map of the geodesic flow.

Class Degree and Relative Maximal Entropy

Given a factor code $π$ from a one-dimensional shift of finite type $X$ onto an irreducible sofic shift $Y$, if $π$ is finite-to-one there is an invariant called the degree of $π$ which is defined the number of preimages of a typical point in $Y$. We generalize the notion of the degree to the class degree which is defined for any factor code on a one-dimensional shift of finite type. Given an ergodic measure $ν$ on $Y$, we find an invariant upper bound on the number of ergodic measures on $X$ which project to $ν$ and have maximal entropy among all measures in the fibre $π^{-1}\{ν\}$. We show that this bound and the class degree of the code agree when $ν$ is ergodic and fully supported. One of the main ingredients of the proof is a uniform distribution property for ergodic measures of relative maximal entropy.

Ergodic Optimization of Super-continuous Functions in the Shift

Ergodic Optimization is the process of finding invariant probability measures that maximize the integral of a given function. It has been conjectured that "most" functions are optimized by measures supported on a periodic orbit, and it has been proved in several separable spaces that an open and dense subset of functions is optimized by measures supported on a periodic orbit. We add to these positive results by presenting a non-separable space, the class of super-continuous functions, where the set of functions optimized by periodic orbit measures contains an open subset dense in super-continuous functions.

A semi-invertible Oseledets Theorem with applications to transfer operator cocycles

Oseledets' celebrated Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem (MET) is concerned with the exponential growth rates of vectors under the action of a linear cocycle on R^d. When the linear actions are invertible, the MET guarantees an almost-everywhere pointwise splitting of R^d into subspaces of distinct exponential growth rates (called Lyapunov exponents). When the linear actions are non-invertible, Oseledets' MET only yields the existence of a filtration of subspaces, the elements of which contain all vectors that grow no faster than exponential rates given by the Lyapunov exponents. The authors recently demonstrated that a splitting over R^d is guaranteed even without the invertibility assumption on the linear actions. Motivated by applications of the MET to cocycles of (non-invertible) transfer operators arising from random dynamical systems, we demonstrate the existence of an Oseledets splitting for cocycles of quasi-compact non-invertible linear operators on Banach spaces.

Rates of Divergence of non-Conventional Ergodic Averages

We study the rate of growth of ergodic sums along a sequence (a_n) of times: S_N f(x)=f(T^{a_1}x) + ... + f(T^{a_N}x). We characterize the maximal rate of growth of these ergodic sums and identify a number of sequences such as (2^n) that achieve this rate of growth. We also return to Khintchine's strong uniform distribution Conjecture which stated that the averages (1/N)(f(x)+f(2x mod 1)+...+f(Nx mod 1)) converge pointwise almost everywhere to \int f for an integrable function on [0,1). We give an elementary counterexample to this conjecture, showing that divergence occurs at the maximal rate. In addition, we consider versions of Khintchine's conjecture in which the sequence of positive integers is replaced by the increasing enumeration of a subsemigroup of the positive integers. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on the semigroup for convergence in the modified conjecture.
