LUXE-NPOD: new physics searches with an optical dump at LUXE

We propose a novel way to search for feebly interacting massive particles, exploiting two properties of systems involving collisions between high energy electrons and intense laser pulses. The first property is that the electron-intense-laser collision results in a large flux of hard photons, as the laser behaves effectively as a thick medium. The second property is that the emitted photons free-stream inside the laser and thus for them the laser behaves effectively as a very thin medium. Combining these two features implies that the electron-intense-laser collision is an apparatus which can efficiently convert UV electrons to a large flux of hard, co-linear photons. We further propose to direct this unique large and hard flux of photons onto a physical dump which in turn is capable of producing feebly interacting massive particles, in a region of parameters that has never been probed before. We denote this novel apparatus as ``optical dump'' or NPOD (new physics search with optical dump). The proposed LUXE experiment at Eu.XFEL has all the required basic ingredients of the above experimental concept. We discuss how this concept can be realized in practice by adding a detector after the last physical dump of the experiment to reconstruct the two-photon decay product of a new spin-0 particle. We show that even with a relatively short dump, the search can still be background free. Remarkably, even with a 40 TW laser, which corresponds to the initial run, and definitely with a 350 TW laser, of the main run with one year of data taking, LUXE-NPOD will be able to probe uncharted territory of both models of pseudo-scalar and scalar fields, and in particular probe natural of scalar theories for masses above 100 MeV.

Furry picture transition rates in the intense fields at a lepton collider interaction point

The effect on particle physics processes by intense electromagnetic fields in the charge bunch collisions at future lepton colliders is considered. Since the charge bunch fields are tied to massive sources (the $e^{+}e^{-}$ charges), a reference frame is chosen in which the fields appear to be co-propagating. Solutions of the Dirac equation minimally coupled to the electromagnetic fields reasonably associated with two intense overlapping charge bunches are obtained and found to be a Volkov solution with respect to a null 4-vector whose 3-vector part lies in the common propagation direction. These solutions are used within the Furry interaction picture to calculate the beamstrahlung transition rate for electron radiation due to interaction with the electromagnetic fields of two colliding charge bunches. New analytic expressions are obtained and compared numerically with the beamstrahlung in the electromagnetic field of one charge bunch. The techniques developed will be applied to other collider physics processes in due course.

Methods for evaluating physical processes in strong external fields at e+e- colliders: Furry picture and quasi-classical approach

Future linear colliders designs, ILC and CLIC, are expected to be powerful machines for the discovery of Physics Beyond the Standard Model and subsequent precision studies. However, due to the intense beams (high luminosity, high energy), strong electromagnetic fields occur in the beam-beam interaction region. In the context of precision high energy physics, the presence of such strong fields may yield sensitive corrections to the observed electron-positron processes. The Furry picture of quantum states gives a conceptually simple tool to treat physics processes in an external field. A generalization of the quasi-classical operator method (QOM) as an approximation is considered too.

A closer look at the beam-beam processes at ILC and CLIC

The strength of the electromagnetic fields in the bunch collision at a linear collider will have a significant effect, yielding large numbers of beamstrahlung photons and associated coherent pair production. These effects are limited in the proposed ILC beam parameters which limit the strength of the bunch field to $Υ_{\text{ave}}=0.27$. The CLIC 3 Tev design by comparison has a $Υ_{\text{ave}}=3.34$ yielding huge number of coherent pairs. In terms of the precision physics programs of these proposed colliders there is an imperative to investigate the effect of the strong bunch fields on higher order processes. From the exact wavefunctions used in the calculation of transition rates within the Furry interaction picture, and using appropriate simplifications, a multiplicative factor to the coupling constants was obtained. This indicates a significant variation to the transition rate near threshold energies. Further studies are in progress to calculate the exact effect on expected observables.

On the equivalence of semi-classical methods for QED in intense external fields

Using the semi-classical method of Nikishov-Ritus (NR), the derivation of the transition rate of the beamstrahlung process is reviewed. This method uses the Bound Interaction Picture and the exact solutions of the Dirac equation in the external field potential. For future linear colliders, the nominal machine parameters are such that this external field can be considered to be a constant crossed electromagnetic field. The Dirac equation solutions can be Fourier transformed such that they are functions of Dirac gamma matrices, Airy functions and the usual non-external field solution. The resultant analytic form for the transition rate is the same as that obtained by the Quasiclassical Operator (QO) method of Baier-Katkov which sets a limit of ultra-relativistic electron and vanishingly small radiation angle. The NR calculation however also exhibits a pole in the radiation angle for back-radiated photons. The removal of this pole requires a further study of IR divergences within the Bound Interaction Picture.

Design and Construction of a Cherenkov Detector for Compton Polarimetry at the ILC

This paper describes the design and construction of a Cherenkov detector conceived with regard to high energy Compton polarimeters for the International Linear Collider, where beam diagnostic systems of unprecedented precision must complement the interaction region detectors to pursue an ambitious physics programme. Besides the design of a prototype Cherenkov detector, detailed simulation studies are presented. Results of a first testbeam campaign with the main objective of validating the simulation in terms of the light distribution inside the channels and the channel response are presented. Furthermore, a new method for aligning the detector without the need of dedicated data taking has been developped.

Cherenkov Detector Prototype & Testbeam 2009

Precise knowledge of all beam parameters is crucial to fully exploit the physics potential of the International Linear Collider (ILC). A sufficiently accurate measurement of the beam polarisation can only be achieved using dedicated high energy Compton polarimeters combined with well-designed arrays of Cherenkov detectors. This note focuses on the design and detailed simulation of a suitable Cherenkov detector prototype and provides an overview of first results from a highly successful beam test period.

Precision Polarimetry at the ILC: Concepts, Simulations and experiments

The precision physics program of the ILC requires precise knowledge of the state of beam polarisation. In fact the Compton polarimeters intended for the ILC will have to measure the polarisation with error a factor of 2 smaller than the previous best measurement at the SLAC SLD experiment. In order to further reduce measurement error, spin tracking simulations in the ILC Beam Delivery System subject to ground motion induced misalignment have been performed and the expected variation in polarisation has been quantified. A prototype of a high precision spectrometer to record Compton scattered electrons from the interaction of a longitudinal laser and the charged beams has been developed. The Compton electrons interact with a gas in the polarimeter channels to produce Cherenkov radiation measured by photodetectors. The calibration of the photodetectors is crucial and exhaustive bench tests of the photodetector linearity have been performed. The polarimeter prototype itself will be tested at the ELSA testbeam in Bonn in Spring 2009.
