Approximation of SPDE covariance operators by finite elements: A semigroup approach

The problem of approximating the covariance operator of the mild solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation is considered. An integral equation involving the semigroup of the mild solution is derived and a general error decomposition is proven. This formula is applied to approximations of the covariance operator of a stochastic advection-diffusion equation and a stochastic wave equation, both on bounded domains. The approximations are based on finite element discretizations in space and rational approximations of the exponential function in time. Convergence rates are derived in the trace class and Hilbert--Schmidt norms with numerical simulations illustrating the results.

Hilbert--Schmidt regularity of symmetric integral operators on bounded domains with applications to SPDE approximations

Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have important implications for stochastic partial differential equations on bounded domains as well as their numerical approximations. The main tools used to derive the estimates are properties of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of functions on bounded domains along with Hilbert--Schmidt embeddings of Sobolev spaces. Both non-homogeneous and homogeneous kernels are considered. In the latter case, results in a general Schatten class norm are also provided. Important examples of homogeneous kernels covered by the results of the paper include the class of Matérn kernels.

A Note on the Importance of Weak Convergence Rates for SPDE Approximations in Multilevel Monte Carlo Schemes

It is a well-known rule of thumb that approximations of stochastic partial differential equations have essentially twice the order of weak convergence compared to the corresponding order of strong convergence. This is already known for many approximations of stochastic (ordinary) differential equations while it is recent research for stochastic partial differential equations. In this note it is shown how the availability of weak convergence results influences the number of samples in multilevel Monte Carlo schemes and therefore reduces the computational complexity of these schemes for a given accuracy of the approximations.

Isotropic Gaussian random fields on the sphere: Regularity, fast simulation and stochastic partial differential equations

Isotropic Gaussian random fields on the sphere are characterized by Karhunen-Loève expansions with respect to the spherical harmonic functions and the angular power spectrum. The smoothness of the covariance is connected to the decay of the angular power spectrum and the relation to sample Hölder continuity and sample differentiability of the random fields is discussed. Rates of convergence of their finitely truncated Karhunen-Loève expansions in terms of the covariance spectrum are established, and algorithmic aspects of fast sample generation via fast Fourier transforms on the sphere are indicated. The relevance of the results on sample regularity for isotropic Gaussian random fields and the corresponding lognormal random fields on the sphere for several models from environmental sciences is indicated. Finally, the stochastic heat equation on the sphere driven by additive, isotropic Wiener noise is considered, and strong convergence rates for spectral discretizations based on the spherical harmonic functions are proven.

Covariance structure of parabolic stochastic partial differential equations

In this paper parabolic random partial differential equations and parabolic stochastic partial differential equations driven by a Wiener process are considered. A deterministic, tensorized evolution equation for the second moment and the covariance of the solutions of the parabolic stochastic partial differential equations is derived. Well-posedness of a space-time weak variational formulation of this tensorized equation is established.
