Nonlinear semigroups for nonlocal conservation laws

We investigate a class of nonlocal conservation laws in several space dimensions, where the continuum average of weighted nonlocal interactions are considered over a finite horizon. We establish well-posedness for a broad class of flux functions and initial data via semigroup theory in Banach spaces and, in particular, via the celebrated Crandall-Liggett Theorem. We also show that the unique mild solution satisfies a Kružkov-type nonlocal entropy inequality. Similarly to the local case, we demonstrate an efficient way of proving various desirable qualitative properties of the unique solution.

Approximation of SPDE covariance operators by finite elements: A semigroup approach

The problem of approximating the covariance operator of the mild solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation is considered. An integral equation involving the semigroup of the mild solution is derived and a general error decomposition is proven. This formula is applied to approximations of the covariance operator of a stochastic advection-diffusion equation and a stochastic wave equation, both on bounded domains. The approximations are based on finite element discretizations in space and rational approximations of the exponential function in time. Convergence rates are derived in the trace class and Hilbert--Schmidt norms with numerical simulations illustrating the results.

Hilbert--Schmidt regularity of symmetric integral operators on bounded domains with applications to SPDE approximations

Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have important implications for stochastic partial differential equations on bounded domains as well as their numerical approximations. The main tools used to derive the estimates are properties of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of functions on bounded domains along with Hilbert--Schmidt embeddings of Sobolev spaces. Both non-homogeneous and homogeneous kernels are considered. In the latter case, results in a general Schatten class norm are also provided. Important examples of homogeneous kernels covered by the results of the paper include the class of Matérn kernels.

Some approximation results for mild solutions of stochastic fractional order evolution equations driven by Gaussian noise

We investigate the quality of space approximation of a class of stochastic integral equations of convolution type with Gaussian noise. Such equations arise, for example, when considering mild solutions of stochastic fractional order partial differential equations but also when considering mild solutions of classical stochastic partial differential equations. The key requirement for the equations is a smoothing property of the deterministic evolution operator which is typical in parabolic type problems. We show that if one has access to nonsmooth data estimates for the deterministic error operator together with its derivative of a space discretization procedure, then one obtains error estimates in pathwise Hölder norms with rates that can be read off the deterministic error rates. We illustrate the main result by considering a class of stochastic fractional order partial differential equations and space approximations performed by spectral Galerkin methods and finite elements. We also improve an existing result on the stochastic heat equation.

Boundary conditions for nonlocal one-sided pseudo-differential operators and the associated stochastic processes II

We connect boundary conditions for one-sided pseudo-differential operators with the generators of modified one-sided Lévy processes. On one hand this allows modellers to use appropriate boundary conditions with confidence when restricting the modelling domain. On the other hand it allows for numerical techniques based on differential equation solvers to obtain fast approximations of densities or other statistical properties of restricted one-sided Lévy processes encountered, for example, in finance. In particular we identify a new nonlocal mass conserving boundary condition by showing it corresponds to fast-forwarding, i.e. removing the time the process spends outside the domain. We treat all combinations of killing, reflecting and fast-forwarding boundary conditions. In Part I we show wellposedness of the backward and forward Cauchy problems with a one-sided pseudo-differential operator with boundary conditions as generator. We do so by showing convergence of Feller semigroups based on grid point approximations of the modified Lévy process. In Part II we show that the limiting Feller semigroup is indeed the semigroup associated with the modified Lévy process by showing continuity of the modifications with respect to the Skorokhod topology.

Mittag-Leffler Euler integrator for a stochastic fractional order equation with additive noise

Motivated by fractional derivative models in viscoelasticity, a class of semilinear stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations, and their deterministic counterparts, are considered. A generalized exponential Euler method, named here as the Mittag-Leffler Euler integrator, is used for the temporal discretization, while the spatial discretization is performed by the spectral Galerkin method. The temporal rate of strong convergence is found to be (almost) twice compared to when the backward Euler method is used together with a convolution quadrature for time discretization. Numerical experiments that validate the theory are presented.

Error estimates of the backward Euler-Maruyama method for multi-valued stochastic differential equations

In this paper, we derive error estimates of the backward Euler-Maruyama method applied to multi-valued stochastic differential equations. An important example of such an equation is a stochastic gradient flow whose associated potential is not continuously differentiable, but assumed to be convex. We show that the backward Euler-Maruyama method is well-defined and convergent of order at least $1/4$ with respect to the root-mean-square norm. Our error analysis relies on techniques for deterministic problems developed in [Nochetto, Savaré, and Verdi, Comm.\ Pure Appl.\ Math., 2000]. We verify that our setting applies to an overdamped Langevin equation with a discontinuous gradient and to a spatially semi-discrete approximation of the stochastic $p$-Laplace equation.

On a randomized backward Euler method for nonlinear evolution equations with time-irregular coefficients

In this paper we introduce a randomized version of the backward Euler method, that is applicable to stiff ordinary differential equations and nonlinear evolution equations with time-irregular coefficients. In the finite-dimensional case, we consider Carathéodory type functions satisfying a one-sided Lipschitz condition. After investigating the well-posedness and the stability properties of the randomized scheme, we prove the convergence to the exact solution with a rate of $0.5$ in the root-mean-square norm assuming only that the coefficient function is square integrable with respect to the temporal parameter. These results are then extended to the numerical solution of infinite-dimensional evolution equations under monotonicity and Lipschitz conditions. Here we consider a combination of the randomized backward Euler scheme with a Galerkin finite element method. We obtain error estimates that correspond to the regularity of the exact solution. The practicability of the randomized scheme is also illustrated through several numerical experiments.

Reflected Spectrally Negative Stable Processes and their Governing Equations

This paper explicitly computes the transition densities of a spectrally negative stable process with index greater than one, reflected at its infimum. First we derive the forward equation using the theory of sun-dual semigroups. The resulting forward equation is a boundary value problem on the positive half-line that involves a negative Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative in space, and a fractional reflecting boundary condition at the origin. Then we apply numerical methods to explicitly compute the transition density of this space-inhomogeneous Markov process, for any starting point, to any desired degree of accuracy. Finally, we discuss an application to fractional Cauchy problems, which involve a positive Caputo fractional derivative in time.

Weak error analysis for semilinear stochastic Volterra equations with additive noise

We prove a weak error estimate for the approximation in space and time of a semilinear stochastic Volterra integro-differential equation driven by additive space-time Gaussian noise. We treat this equation in an abstract framework, in which parabolic stochastic partial differential equations are also included as a special case. The approximation in space is performed by a standard finite element method and in time by an implicit Euler method combined with a convolution quadrature. The weak rate of convergence is proved to be twice the strong rate, as expected. Our convergence result concerns not only functionals of the solution at a fixed time but also more complicated functionals of the entire path and includes convergence of covariances and higher order statistics. The proof does not rely on a Kolmogorov equation. Instead it is based on a duality argument from Malliavin calculus.

Weak error analysis via functional Itô calculus

We consider autonomous stochastic ordinary differential equations (SDEs) and weak approximations of their solutions for a general class of sufficiently smooth path-dependent functionals f. Based on tools from functional Itô calculus, such as the functional Itô formula and functional Kolmogorov equation, we derive a general representation formula for the weak error $E(f(X_T)-f(\tilde X_T))$, where $X_T$ and $\tilde X_T$ are the paths of the solution process and its approximation up to time T. The functional $f:C([0,T],R^d)\to R$ is assumed to be twice continuously Fréchet differentiable with derivatives of polynomial growth. The usefulness of the formula is demonstrated in the one dimensional setting by showing that if the solution to the SDE is approximated via the linearly time-interpolated explicit Euler method, then the rate of weak convergence for sufficiently regular f is 1.

Weak convergence of finite element approximations of linear stochastic evolution equations with additive Lévy noise

We present an abstract framework to study weak convergence of numerical approximations of linear stochastic partial differential equations driven by additive Lévy noise. We first derive a representation formula for the error which we then apply to study space-time discretizations of the stochastic heat equation, a Volterra-type integro-differential equation, and the wave equation as examples. For twice continuously differentiable test functions with bounded second derivative (with an additional condition on the second derivative for the wave equation) the weak rate of convergence is found to be twice the strong rate. The results extend earlier work by two of the authors as we consider general square-integrable infinite-dimensional Lévy processes and do not require boundedness of the test functions and their first derivative. Furthermore, the present framework is applicable to both hyperbolic and parabolic equations, and even to stochastic Volterra integro-differential equations.

On the backward Euler approximation of the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation

We consider the stochastic Allen-Cahn equation perturbed by smooth additive Gaussian noise in a spatial domain with smooth boundary in dimension $d\le 3$, and study the semidiscretization in time of the equation by an implicit Euler method. We show that the method converges pathwise with a rate $O(Δt^γ) $ for any $γ<\frac12$. We also prove that the scheme converges uniformly in the strong $L^p$-sense but with no rate given.

Strong order of convergence of a fully discrete approximation of a linear stochastic Volterra type evolution equation

In this paper we investigate a discrete approximation in time and in space of a Hilbert space valued stochastic process $\{u(t)\}_{t\in [0,T]}$ satisfying a stochastic linear evolution equation with a positive-type memory term driven by an additive Gaussian noise. The equation can be written in an abstract form as $$ \dd u + (\int_0^t b(t-s) Au(s) \, \dd s)\, \dd t = \dd W^{_Q}, t\in (0,T]; \quad u(0)=u_0 \in H, $$ where $W^{_Q}$ is a $Q$-Wiener process on $H=L^2({\mathcal D})$ and where the main example of $b$ we consider is given by $$ b(t) = t^{β-1}/Γ(β), \quad 0 < β<1. $$ We let $A$ be an unbounded linear self-adjoint positive operator on $H$ and we further assume that there exist $α>0$ such that $A^{-α}$ has finite trace and that $Q$ is bounded from $H$ into $D(A^κ)$ for some real $κ$ with $α-\frac{1}{β+1}<κ\leq α$. The discretization is achieved via an implicit Euler scheme and a Laplace transform convolution quadrature in time (parameter $Δt =T/n$), and a standard continuous finite element method in space (parameter $h$). Let $u_{n,h}$ be the discrete solution at $T=nΔt$. We show that $$ (\E \| u_{n,h} - u(T)\|^2)^{1/2}={\mathcal O}(h^ν + Δt^γ), $$ for any $γ< (1 - (β+1)(α- κ))/2 $ and $ν\leq \frac{1}{β+1}-α+κ$.

preprint2013arXiv

Weak convergence of a fully discrete approximation of a linear stochastic evolution equation with a positive-type memory term

In this paper we are interested in the numerical approximation of the marginal distributions of the Hilbert space valued solution of a stochastic Volterra equation driven by an additive Gaussian noise. This equation can be written in the abstract Itô form as $$ \dd X(t) + \left (\int_0^t b(t-s) A X(s) \, \dd s \right) \, \dd t = \dd W^{_Q}(t), t\in (0,T]; ~ X(0) =X_0\in H, $$ \noindent where $W^Q$ is a $Q$-Wiener process on the Hilbert space $H$ and where the time kernel $b$ is the locally integrable potential $t^{ρ-2}$, $ρ\in (1,2)$, or slightly more general. The operator $A$ is unbounded, linear, self-adjoint, and positive on $H$. Our main assumption concerning the noise term is that $A^{(ν- 1/ρ)/2} Q^{1/2}$ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator on $H$ for some $ν\in [0,1/ρ]$. The numerical approximation is achieved via a standard continuous finite element method in space (parameter $h$) and an implicit Euler scheme and a Laplace convolution quadrature in time (parameter $Δt=T/N$). %Let $X_h^N$ be the discrete solution at time $T$. Eventually let $φ: H\rightarrow \R$ is such that $D^2φ$ is bounded on $H$ but not necessarily bounded and suppose in addition that either its first derivative is bounded on $H$ and $X_0 \in L^1(Ω)$ or $φ= \| \cdot \|^2$ and $X_0 \in L^2(Ω)$. We show that for $φ: H\rightarrow \R$ twice continuously differentiable test function with bounded second derivative, $$ | \E φ(X^N_h) - \E φ(X(T)) | \leq C \ln \left(\frac{T}{h^{2/ρ} + Δt} \right) (Δt^{ρν} + h^{2ν}), $$ \noindent for any $0\leq ν\leq 1/ρ$. This is essentially twice the rate of strong convergence under the same regularity assumption on the noise.

Higher order Grünwald approximations of fractional derivatives and fractional powers of operators

We give stability and consistency results for higher order Grünwald-type formulae used in the approximation of solutions to fractional-in-space partial differential equations. We use a new Carlson-type inequality for periodic Fourier multipliers to gain regularity and stability results. We then generalise the theory to the case where the first derivative operator is replaced by the generator of a bounded group on an arbitrary Banach space.
