Dimensionality of the superconductivity in the transition metal pnictide WP

We report theoretical and experimental results on the transition metal pnictide WP. The theoretical outcomes based on tight-binding calculations and density functional theory indicate that WP is a three-dimensional superconductor with an anisotropic electronic structure and nonsymmorphic symmetries. On the other hand, magnetoresistance experimental data and the analysis of superconducting fluctuations of the conductivity in external magnetic field indicate a weakly anisotropic three-dimensional superconducting phase.

Majorana/Andreev crossover and the fate of the topological phase transition in inhomogeneous nanowires

Majorana bound states (MBS) and Andreev bound states (ABS) in realistic Majorana nanowires setups have similar experimental signatures which make them hard to distinguishing one from the other. Here, we characterize the continuous Majorana/Andreev crossover interpolating between fully-separated, partially-separated, and fully-overlapping Majorana modes, in terms of global and local topological invariants, fermion parity, quasiparticle densities, Majorana pseudospin and spin polarizations, density overlaps and transition probabilities between opposite Majorana components. We found that in inhomogeneous wires, the transition between fully-overlapping trivial ABS and nontrivial MBS does not necessarily mandate the closing of the bulk gap of quasiparticle excitations, but a simple parity crossing of partially-separated Majorana modes (ps-MM) from trivial to nontrivial regimes. We demonstrate that fully-separated and fully-overlapping Majorana modes correspond to the two limiting cases at the opposite sides of a continuous crossover: the only distinction between the two can be obtained by estimating the degree of separations of the Majorana components. This result does not contradict the bulk-edge correspondence: Indeed, the field inhomogeneities driving the Majorana/Andreev crossover have a length scale comparable with the nanowire length, and therefore correspond to a nonlocal perturbation which breaks the topological protection of the MBS.

Superconductivity induced by structural reorganization in the electron-doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

Electron-doped and hole-doped superconducting cuprates exhibit a symmetric phase diagram as a function of doping. This symmetry is however only approximate. Indeed, electron-doped cuprates become superconductors only after a specific annealing process: This annealing affects the oxygen content by only a tiny amount, but has a dramatic impact on the electronic properties of the sample. Here we report the occurrence of superconductivity in oxygen-deficient Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ thin films grown in an oxygen-free environment, after annealing in pure argon flow. As verified by x-ray diffraction, annealing induces an increase of the interlayer distance between CuO$_2$ planes in the crystal structure. Since this distance is correlated to the concentration of oxygens in apical positions, and since oxygen content cannot substantially increase during annealing, our experiments indicate that the superconducting phase transition has to be ascribed to a migration of oxygen ions to apical positions during annealing. Moreover, as we confirm via first-principles density functional theory calculations, the changes in the structural and transport properties of the films can be theoretically described by a specific redistribution of the existing oxygen ions at apical positions with respect to CuO$_2$ planes, which remodulates the electronic band structure and suppresses the antiferromagnetic order, allowing the emergence of hole superconductivity.

Competition between intrinsic and extrinsic effects in the quenching of the superconducting state in FeSeTe thin films

We report the first experimental observation of the quenching of the superconducting state in current-voltage characteristics of an iron-based superconductor, namely, in FeSeTe thin films. Based on available theoretical models, our analysis suggests the presence of an intrinsic flux-flow electronic instability along with non-negligible extrinsic thermal effects. The coexistence and competition of these two mechanisms classify the observed instability as halfway between those of low-temperature and of high-temperature superconductors, where thermal effects are respectively largely negligible or predominant.

Disorder-sensitive pump-probe measurements on Nd$_{1.83}$Ce$_{0.17}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ films

We find an unambiguous relationship between disorder-driven features in the temperature dependence of the resistance and the behavior, as functions of the temperature, of the parameters necessary to describe some of the relaxation processes in the photoinduced differential time-resolved reflectivity of three samples of Nd$_{1.83}$Ce$_{0.17}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$. The latter, sharing the same Ce content, have been fabricated and annealed ad-hoc in order to differ only for the degree of disorder, mainly related to oxygen content and location, and, consequently, for the temperature dependence of the resistance: two of them present a minimum in the resistance and behave as a superconductor and as a metal, respectively, the third behaves as an insulator. The systematic coherence between the resistance and the relaxation parameters behaviors in temperature for all three samples is absolutely remarkable and shows that pump-probe measurements can be extremely sensitive to disorder as it drives the emergence of new excitations and of the related relaxation channels as in this paradigmatic case.

Magneto-transport measurements on Nd$_{1.83}$Ce$_{0.17}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ thin films

Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$ (NCCO) epitaxial thin films have been deposited on (100) SrTiO$_3$ substrates by DC sputtering technique in different atmosphere. The as-grown samples show different dependence of the in-plane resistivity at low temperature, when they are grown in pure argon atmosphere or in oxygen. Moreover, an unusual behaviour is also found when transport takes place in the presence of an external magnetic field. It is commonly accepted that the higher anisotropic properties of NCCO crystalline cell with respect to the hole doped YBCO and LSCO and the electric conduction mainly confined in the CuO$_2$ plane, strongly support the two-dimensional (2D) character of the current transport in this system. Results on the temperature dependence of the resistance, as well as on the magnetoresistance and the Hall coefficient, obtained on epitaxial NCCO thin films in the over-doped region ($x\ge0.15$) of the phase diagram are presented and discussed.

Stability mechanisms of high current transport in iron-chalcogenides superconducting films

The improvement in the fabrication techniques of iron-based superconductors have made these materials real competitors of high temperature superconductors and MgB$_2$. In particular, iron-chalcogenides have proved to be the most promising for the realization of high current carrying tapes. But their use on a large scale cannot be achieved without the understanding of the current stability mechanisms in these compounds. Indeed, we have recently observed the presence of flux flow instabilities features in Fe(Se,Te) thin films grown on CaF$_2$. Here we present the results of current-voltage characterizations at different temperatures and applied magnetic fields on Fe(Se,Te) microbridges grown on CaF$_2$. These results will be analyzed from the point of view of the most validated models with the aim to identify the nature of the flux flow instabilities features (i.e., thermal or electronic), in order to give a further advance to the high current carrying capability of iron-chalcogenide superconductors.
