Attractors of Hamiltonian nonlinear partial differential equations

We survey the theory of attractors of nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations since its appearance in 1990. These are results on global attraction to stationary states, to solitons and to stationary orbits, on adiabatic effective dynamics of solitons and their asymptotic stability. Results of numerical simulations are also given. Based on these results, we propose a new general hypothesis on attractors of $G$-invariant nonlinear Hamiltonian partial differential equations. The obtained results suggest a novel dynamical interpretation of basic quantum phenomena: Bohr's transitions between quantum stationary states, wave-particle duality, and probabilistic interpretation.

Solutions with compact time spectrum to nonlinear Klein--Gordon and Schroedinger equations and the Titchmarsh theorem for partial convolution

We prove that finite energy solutions to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and nonlinear Klein--Gordon equation which have the compact time spectrum have to be one-frequency solitary waves. The argument is based on the generalization of the Titchmarsh convolution theorem to partial convolutions.

On spectral stability of the nonlinear Dirac equation

We study the point spectrum of the nonlinear Dirac equation in any spatial dimension, linearized at one of the solitary wave solutions. We prove that, in any dimension, the linearized equation has no embedded eigenvalues in the part of the essential spectrum beyond the embedded thresholds. We then prove that the birth of point eigenvalues with nonzero real part (the ones which lead to linear instability) from the essential spectrum is only possible from the embedded eigenvalues or thresholds, and therefore can not take place beyond the embedded thresholds. We also prove that "in the nonrelativistic limit" $ω\to m$, the point eigenvalues can only accumulate to $0$ and $\pm 2 m i$.

Stability of exact solutions of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in an external potential having supersymmetry and parity-time symmetry

We discuss the stability properties of the solutions of the general nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) in 1+1 dimensions in an external potential derivable from a parity-time (PT) symmetric superpotential $W(x)$ that we considered earlier [Kevrekedis et al Phys. Rev. E 92, 042901 (2015)]. In particular we consider the nonlinear partial differential equation $\{ i \partial_t + \partial_x^2 - V^{-}(x) +| ψ(x,t) |^{2κ} \} \, ψ(x,t) = 0$, for arbitrary nonlinearity parameter $κ$. We study the bound state solutions when $V^{-}(x) = (1/4- b^2)$ sech$^2(x)$, which can be derived from two different superpotentials $W(x)$, one of which is complex and $PT$ symmetric. Using Derrick's theorem, as well as a time dependent variational approximation, we derive exact analytic results for the domain of stability of the trapped solution as a function of the depth $b^2$ of the external potential. We compare the regime of stability found from these analytic approaches with a numerical linear stability analysis using a variant of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (V-K) stability criterion. The numerical results of applying the V-K condition give the same answer for the domain of stability as the analytic result obtained from applying Derrick's theorem. Our main result is that for $κ>2$ a new regime of stability for the exact solutions appears as long as $b > b_{crit}$, where $b_{crit}$ is a function of the nonlinearity parameter $κ$. In the absence of the potential the related solitary wave solutions of the NLSE are unstable for $κ>2$.

Symmetry and Dirac points in graphene spectrum

Existence and stability of Dirac points in the dispersion relation of operators periodic with respect to the hexagonal lattice is investigated for different sets of additional symmetries. The following symmetries are considered: rotation by $2π/3$ and inversion, rotation by $2π/3$ and horizontal reflection, inversion or reflection with weakly broken rotation symmetry, and the case where no Dirac points arise: rotation by $2π/3$ and vertical reflection. All proofs are based on symmetry considerations. In particular, existence of degeneracies in the spectrum is deduced from the (co)representation of the relevant symmetry group. The conical shape of the dispersion relation is obtained from its invariance under rotation by $2π/3$. Persistence of conical points when the rotation symmetry is weakly broken is proved using a geometric phase in one case and parity of the eigenfunctions in the other.

Solitary waves of a PT-symmetric Nonlinear Dirac equation

In the present work, we consider a prototypical example of a PT-symmetric Dirac model. We discuss the underlying linear limit of the model and identify the threshold of the PT-phase transition in an analytical form. We then focus on the examination of the nonlinear model. We consider the continuation in the PT-symmetric model of the solutions of the corresponding Hamiltonian model and find that the solutions can be continued robustly as stable ones all the way up to the PT-transition threshold. In the latter, they degenerate into linear waves. We also examine the dynamics of the model. Given the stability of the waveforms in the PT-exact phase we consider them as initial conditions for parameters outside of that phase. We find that both oscillatory dynamics and exponential growth may arise, depending on the size of the corresponding "quench". The former can be characterized by an interesting form of bi-frequency solutions that have been predicted on the basis of the SU(1,1) symmetry. Finally, we explore some special, analytically tractable, but not PT-symmetric solutions in the massless limit of the model.

Asymptotic stability of solitary waves in generalized Gross--Neveu model

For the nonlinear Dirac equation in (1+1)D with scalar self-interaction (Gross--Neveu model), with quintic and higher order nonlinearities (and within certain range of the parameters), we prove that solitary wave solutions are asymptotically stable in the "even" subspace of perturbations (to ignore translations and eigenvalues $\pm 2ωi$). The asymptotic stability is proved for initial data in $H^1$. The approach is based on the spectral information about the linearization at solitary waves which we justify by numerical simulations. For the proof, we develop the spectral theory for the linearized operators and obtain appropriate estimates in mixed Lebesgue spaces, with and without weights.

Vakhitov-Kolokolov and energy vanishing conditions for linear instability of solitary waves in models of classical self-interacting spinor fields

We study the linear stability of localized modes in self-interacting spinor fields, analyzing the spectrum of the operator corresponding to linearization at solitary waves. Following the generalization of the Vakhitov--Kolokolov approach, we show that the bifurcation of real eigenvalues from the origin is completely characterized by the Vakhitov--Kolokolov condition $dQ/dω=0$ and by the vanishing of the energy functional. We give the numerical data on the linear stability in the generalized Gross--Neveu model and the generalized massive Thirring model in the charge-subcritical, critical, and supercritical cases, showing the agreement with the Vakhitov--Kolokolov and the energy vanishing conditions.

On linear instability of solitary waves for the nonlinear Dirac equation

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation, also known as the Soler model: $i\p\sb tψ=-iα\cdot \nabla ψ+m βψ-f(ψ\sp\ast βψ) βψ$, $ψ(x,t)\in\mathbb{C}^{N}$, $x\in\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\le 3$, $f\in C\sp 2(\R)$, where $α_j$, $j = 1,...,n$, and $β$ are $N \times N$ Hermitian matrices which satisfy $α_j^2=β^2=I_N$, $α_j β+βα_j=0$, $α_j α_k + α_k α_j =2 δ_{jk} I_N$. We study the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions $ϕ(x)e^{-iωt}$. We study the point spectrum of linearizations at solitary waves that bifurcate from NLS solitary waves in the limit $ω\to m$, proving that if $k>2/n$, then one positive and one negative eigenvalue are present in the spectrum of the linearizations at these solitary waves with $ω$ sufficiently close to $m$, so that these solitary waves are linearly unstable. The approach is based on applying the Rayleigh--Schroedinger perturbation theory to the nonrelativistic limit of the equation. The results are in formal agreement with the Vakhitov--Kolokolov stability criterion.

Linear instability of nonlinear Dirac equation in 1D with higher order nonlinearity

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation in one dimension, also known as the Soler model in (1+1) dimensions, or the massive Gross-Neveu model: $i\partial_tψ=-iα\partial_xψ+mβψ-f(ψ^\astβψ)βψ$, $ψ(x,t)\in\C^2$, $x\in\R$, $f\in C^\infty(\R)$, $m>0$, where $α$, $β$ are $2\times 2$ hermitian matrices which satisfy $α^2=β^2=1$, $αβ+βα=0$. We study the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions $ϕ_ω(x)e^{-iωt}$. More precisely, we study the presence of point eigenvalues in the spectra of linearizations at solitary waves of arbitrarily small amplitude, in the limit $ω\to m$. We prove that if $f(s)=s^k+O(s^{k+1})$, $k\in\N$, with $k\ge 3$, then one positive and one negative eigenvalue are present in the spectrum of linearizations at all solitary waves with $ω$ sufficiently close to $m$. This shows that all solitary waves of sufficiently small amplitude are linearly unstable. The approach is based on applying the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory to the nonrelativistic limit of the equation. The results are in formal agreement with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion. Let us mention a similar independent result [Guan-Gustafson] on linear instability for the nonlinear Dirac equation in three dimensions, with cubic nonlinearity (this result is also in formal agreement with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion).

On spectral stability of solitary waves of nonlinear Dirac equation on a line

We study the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions to the nonlinear Dirac equation in one dimension. We focus on the Dirac equation with cubic nonlinearity, known as the Soler model in (1+1) dimensions and also as the massive Gross-Neveu model. Presented numerical computations of the spectrum of linearization at a solitary wave show that the solitary waves are spectrally stable. We corroborate our results by finding explicit expressions for several of the eigenfunctions. Some of the analytic results hold for the nonlinear Dirac equation with generic nonlinearity.

Weak attractor of the Klein-Gordon field in discrete space-time interacting with a nonlinear oscillator

We consider the U(1)-invariant nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in discrete space and discrete time, which is the discretization of the nonlinear continuous Klein-Gordon equation. To obtain this equation, we use the energy-conserving finite-difference scheme of Strauss-Vazquez. We prove that each finite energy solution converges as $t\to\pm\infty$ to the finite-dimensional set of all multifrequency solitary wave solutions with one, two, and four frequencies. The components of the solitary manifold corresponding to the solitary waves of the first two types are generically two-dimensional, while the component corresponding to the last type is generically four-dimensional. The attraction to the set of solitary waves is caused by the nonlinear energy transfer from lower harmonics to the continuous spectrum and subsequent radiation. For the proof, we develop the well-posedness for the nonlinear wave equation in discrete space-time, apply the technique of quasimeasures, and also obtain the version of the Titchmarsh convolution theorem for distributions on the circle.

Well-posedness, energy and charge conservation for nonlinear wave equations in discrete space-time

We consider the problem of discretization for the U(1)-invariant nonlinear wave equations in any dimension. We show that the classical finite-difference scheme used by Strauss and Vazquez \cite{MR0503140} conserves the positive-definite discrete analog of the energy if the grid ratio is $dt/dx\le 1/\sqrt{n}$, where $dt$ and $dx$ are the mesh sizes of the time and space variables and $n$ is the spatial dimension. We also show that if the grid ratio is $dt/dx=1/\sqrt{n}$, then there is the discrete analog of the charge which is conserved. We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions to the discrete Cauchy problem. We use the energy conservation to obtain the a priori bounds for finite energy solutions, thus showing that the Strauss -- Vazquez finite-difference scheme for the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with positive nonlinear term in the Hamiltonian is conditionally stable.

On the meaning of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion for the nonlinear Dirac equation

We consider the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions ϕ(x)e^{-iωt} to the nonlinear Dirac equation in any dimension. This equation is well-known to theoretical physicists as the Soler model (or, in one dimension, the Gross-Neveu model), and attracted much attention for many years. We show that, generically, at the values of where the Vakhitov-Kolokolov stability criterion breaks down, a pair of real eigenvalues (one positive, one negative) appears from the origin, leading to the linear instability of corresponding solitary waves. As an auxiliary result, we state the virial identities ("Pohozhaev theorem") for the nonlinear Dirac equation. We also show that \pm 2ωi are the eigenvalues of the nonlinear Dirac equation linearized at ϕ(x)e^{-iωt}, which are embedded into the continuous spectrum for |ω| > m/3. This result holds for the nonlinear Dirac equation with any nonlinearity of the Soler form ("scalar-scalar interaction") and in any dimension.
