Noise Sensitivities for an Atom Shuttled by a Moving Optical Lattice via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

We find the noise sensitivities (i.e., the quadratic terms of the energy with respect to the perturbation of the noise) of a particle shuttled by an optical lattice that moves according to a shortcut-to-adiabaticity transport protocol. Noises affecting different optical lattice parameters, trap depth, position, and lattice periodicity, are considered. We find generic expressions of the sensitivities for arbitrary noise spectra but focus on the white-noise limit as a basic reference, and on Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise to account for the effect of non-zero correlation times.

Transport of atoms across an optical lattice using an external harmonic potential

Precise control of quantum particles is required for many interesting or novel experiments. Here we consider the task of transporting an atom using an external harmonic potential from one well of an optical lattice to another without motional excitations. To achieve this we apply techniques from Shortcuts to Adiabaticity (STA) enabling fast and robust state manipulation. The process is split up into three independent building blocks; first the atom is loaded into an additional external harmonic trap; this trap is then transported from one lattice site to another and finally the atom is unloaded back onto the lattice by opening the external harmonic trap. We design protocols for each of these building blocks separately using invariant-based inverse engineering. Additionally we extend this method to the transport of a Bose-Einstein condensate described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Quantum Control via Enhanced Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Fast and robust quantum control protocols are often based on an idealised approximate description of the relevant quantum system. While this may provide a performance which is close to optimal, improvements can be made by incorporating elements of the full system representation. We propose a new technique for such scenarios, called enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA). The eSTA method works for previously intractable Hamiltonians by providing an analytical correction to existing STA protocols. This correction can be easily calculated and the resulting protocols are outside the class of STA schemes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for three distinct cases: manipulation of an internal atomic state beyond the rotating wave approximation, transport of a neutral atom in an optical Gaussian trap and transport of two trapped ions in an anharmonic trap.

Shaken not stirred: Creating exotic angular momentum states by shaking an optical lattice

We propose a method to create higher orbital states of ultracold atoms in the Mott regime of an optical lattice. This is done by periodically modulating the position of the trap minima (known as shaking) and controlling the interference term of the lasers creating the lattice. These methods are combined with techniques of shortcuts to adiabaticity. As an example of this, we show specifically how to create an anti-ferromagnetic type ordering of angular momentum states of atoms. The specific pulse sequences are designed using Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants and a four-level model for each well. The results are compared with numerical simulations of the full Schroedinger equation.

Optimal transport of two ions under slow spring-constant drifts

We investigate the effect of slow spring-constant drifts of the trap used to shuttle two ions of different mass. We design transport protocols to suppress or mitigate the final excitation energy by applying invariant-based inverse engineering, perturbation theory, and a harmonic dynamical normal-mode approximation. A simple, explicit trigonometric protocol for the trap trajectory is found to be robust with respect to the spring-constant drifts.

Exact Energy-Time Uncertainty Relation for Arrival Time by Absorption

We prove an uncertainty relation for energy and arrival time, where the arrival of a particle at a detector is modeled by an absorbing term added to the Hamiltonian. In this well-known scheme the probability for the particle's arrival at the counter is identified with the loss of normalization for an initial wave packet. Under the sole assumption that the absorbing term vanishes on the initial wave function, we show that $ΔT ΔE \geq \sqrt p \hbar/2$ and $<T> ΔE\geq 1.37\sqrt p\hbar$, where $<T>e$ denotes the mean arrival time, and $p$ is the probability for the particle to be eventually absorbed. Nearly minimal uncertainty can be achieved in a two-level system, and we propose a trapped ion experiment to realize this situation.
