Non-Gaussian work statistics at finite-time driving

We study properties of the work distribution of a many-body system driven through a quantum phase transition in finite time. We focus on the non-Gaussianity of the distribution, which we characterize through two quantitative metrics: skewness and negentropy. In particular, we focus on the quantum Ising model and show that a finite duration of the ramp enhances the non-Gaussianity of the distribution for a finite size system. By examining the characteristics of the full distribution, we observe that there is a clear intermediate regime between the sudden quench and adiabatic limits, where the distribution becomes increasingly skewed.

Classical dissipative cost of quantum control

Protocols for non-adiabatic quantum control often require the use of classical time varying fields. Assessing the thermodynamic cost of such protocols, however, is far from trivial. In this letter we study the irreversible entropy produced by the classical apparatus generating the control fields, thus providing a direct link between the cost of a control protocol and dissipation. We focus, in particular, on the case of time-dependent magnetic fields and shortcuts to adiabaticity. Our results are showcased with two experimentally realisable case studies: the Landau-Zener model of a spin-1/2 particle in a magnetic field and an ion confined in a Penning trap.

Counterdiabatic control in the impulse regime

Coherent control of complex many-body systems is critical to the development of useful quantum devices. Fast perfect state transfer can be exactly achieved through additional counterdiabatic fields. We show that the additional energetic overhead associated with implementing counterdiabatic driving can be reduced while still maintaining high target state fidelities. This is achieved by implementing control fields only during the impulse regime, as identified by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We demonstrate that this strategy successfully suppresses most of the defects that would be generated due to the finite driving time for two paradigmatic settings: the Landau-Zener model and the Ising model. For the latter case, we also investigate the performance of our impulse control scheme when restricted to more experimentally realistic local control fields.

Quantum Control via Enhanced Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

Fast and robust quantum control protocols are often based on an idealised approximate description of the relevant quantum system. While this may provide a performance which is close to optimal, improvements can be made by incorporating elements of the full system representation. We propose a new technique for such scenarios, called enhanced shortcuts to adiabaticity (eSTA). The eSTA method works for previously intractable Hamiltonians by providing an analytical correction to existing STA protocols. This correction can be easily calculated and the resulting protocols are outside the class of STA schemes. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method for three distinct cases: manipulation of an internal atomic state beyond the rotating wave approximation, transport of a neutral atom in an optical Gaussian trap and transport of two trapped ions in an anharmonic trap.

Shaken not stirred: Creating exotic angular momentum states by shaking an optical lattice

We propose a method to create higher orbital states of ultracold atoms in the Mott regime of an optical lattice. This is done by periodically modulating the position of the trap minima (known as shaking) and controlling the interference term of the lasers creating the lattice. These methods are combined with techniques of shortcuts to adiabaticity. As an example of this, we show specifically how to create an anti-ferromagnetic type ordering of angular momentum states of atoms. The specific pulse sequences are designed using Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants and a four-level model for each well. The results are compared with numerical simulations of the full Schroedinger equation.

Effect of inter-particle interaction in a free oscillation atomic interferometer

We investigate the dynamics of two interacting bosons repeatedly scattering off a beam-splitter in a free oscillation atom interferometer. Using the inter-particle scattering length and the beam splitter probabilites as our control parameters, we show that even in a simple setup like this a wide range of strongly correlated quantum states can be created. This in particular includes the NOON state, which maximizes the quantum Fisher information and is a foremost state in quantum metrology.
